G5 periodically loses Bose speakers

I have a set of Bose Companion 5 speakers which have worked beautifully with my Mac up until about 3 weeks ago. Now, about once a week the Bose speakers are not being recognized by the Mac at all & my audio output reverts to the internal speakers. If disconnect the Bose speakers from poser, plug them back in, they are now recognized, & I simply have to go back into the "MIDI setup", re-setting the audio preferences for the Bose. The only thing I can think of that may have caused this is my upgrade to Leopard about a week after release. Does anyone have any thoughts as to what may be going on? Also, do you think the problem is the Mac or the Bose speakers? I thought I would post here first & if we can pretty much exclude the G5, then I will be taking this up with Bose.

Deb, this came out in McFixIt yesterday - does it help?
+Problems playing audio through USB speakers, fixes+
+We've recently received a rash of reports indicating problems playing sound through USB-connected speakers -- especially after updating to Leopard. Some users experience an odd phenomenon where sounds refuse to play through USB speakers, but upon disconnecting the speakers, a queued up series of sounds plays through the internal speakers, as if the sounds were clogged in the USB channel then pushed in rapid succession through the internal speaker once USB speakers are taken out of the loop.+
+As described by MacFixIt reader Dave:+
+"When I boot, the sound works fine, including new message sounds for Mail. However, after a time, either due to sleep, use of other applications (Safari?), etc. the sound stops completely. I checked Sound in the system preferences, and all looks normal, but it acts like it has been muted - but isn't. Over time, in checking for a bad connector, I found that if I unplug the USB cable for the display (and other peripherals, including speakers), the internal speakers play a string of all the missing sounds that had been held back, or stored somehow; and then the external speakers start working again."+
+"I went to system preferences and changed the sound output from external to internal speakers - instead of unplugging the USB cable between the monitor and the laptop. It produced the same result, the internal speakers sequentially played a series of sounds sent messages, checked email, etc. So it acts as if the sound "data" is being blocked and held, and I'm beginning to think it is triggered by one of the things turned off during sleep; such as screensaver, disk shut down, display turned off, etc."+
+So in many cases, the solution may be to simply disconnect and reconnect USB speakers to regain sound throughput.+
+In other cases, the problem may be underpowered USB speakers. We've previously reported various other issues caused by a lack of adequate USB power, usually solved by disconnecting other power-drawing USB devices from the same bus or adding an externally powered USB hub.+
+One additional suggestion: you might try running USB Prober. It is located in /Developer/Applications/Utilities, provided you have installed the Xcode developer tools. (These are probably present on your Tiger installer DVD, if you have one, but the best way to obtain them, if you have a broadband Internet connection, is to go to http://developer.apple.com, join the Apple Developer Connection as a free online member, and log in to obtain the most recent Xcode tools installer as a 1GB download.) Apparently, just running USB Prober does some sort of USB reset that can "wake up" unresponsive USB ports.+
+Finally, outdated firmware or drivers may be precluding recognition for some devices. Try checking your device manufacturer's Web site for the latest downloads.+

  • HT4587 Hi, I want to set up a sound system in a new house using apple equipment. I have few sets of Bose speakers that I would like to utilise, my question is - what do I need to set it up and how do I do it with regards to  AirPlay? Thanks

Hi, new to the forums and apple tbh.
Moving into a new house and want to set up a sound system, thought apple would be the way to go as I have iPads, iPhones, iPod touch and nanos. I also have a few sets of Bose speakers which I would like to incorporate. What I am wondering is, what else do I need to buy to do this? Do I need seperate devices to attach to each speaker? Do I need a new router? And how would I configure it?
Ideally I would like 4 rooms each with their own speakers that could play simultaneously.
    Thanks in advance!!!!

First, please check out the following Apple Support article for details on setting up an AirPort Express Base Station (AX) for iTunes streaming. Note: You will need a separate AX for each set of speakers that you want to stream to. Also, note that you can stream a single audio file to one or more speakers, but you cannot stream separate audio files to different speakers simultaneously.
Second, the Bose speakers you mentioned would need to have an audio input jack, either analog or optical digital to receive the stream from the AX. As you know, Bose makes a number of different speaker/home theatre audio options. If your specific model of speakers do, then it's just a matter to use the appropriate audio cable between the audio port of the AX and the speakers.

I'm not sure what you mean. You can't find the express to set it up.. or you can't find the network created by the express?

  • I cannot get my Bose speakers to work.  They are plugged correctly and not in the headset jack

I have a new iMac 21.5 inch Led. 16.9 widescreen computer.  I purchased Bose speakers.  They are set up correctly and plugged in the back of the monitor in the correct slot (not headset slot) and I cannot get sound through  the Bose speakers.  I have tried the speakers on another computer and they work properly.  Can you help?

Hi. If the speakers are using a standard 3.5mm plug, they need to be plugged into the headphone jack. Please clarify which jack you are using.

  • Apple TV & Airport Express - Bose speakers

I bought the most recent Apple TV and Airport Express and had my Bose speakers hooked them wirelessly. The volume when watching movies from Netflix or Hulu Plus or just the TV is not as strong as it used to be when I had the older version of both devices.

    Welcome to the Apple Community.
select the express as AirPlay speakers in the AirPlay options under settings on the Apple TV.

Do you mean a USB adapter to send audio to the speakers?
You would need to use the audio control panel to send the computer audio to this output device.

If they have an optical input and a volume control, then there shouldn't be any reason why not.

  • Static / Bad Connection for External Bose Speakers?

    Hello Everyone;
I recently bought a new 24" iMac and bought a set of Bose Companion speakers to go with it. I've plugged them into the headphones jack using the cable provided by Bose, but my sound quality is really bad. Theres a lot of static in the music, and by moving the 1/8' male connector that plugs into my iMac around or touching it while music is playing causes more static or sound failure - making me think it may be the connection at the computer. On the other hand, I'm not quite sure if the cable I'm using is an "optical digital audio out port" as described in the Mac manual. I haven't seen an optical digital 1/8" cable, so this is making me think the cable is the problem. The speakers run spdif out to 1/8".
So before I take my mac to have it looked at, does anyone have any ideas as to what I'm doing wrong, or should be doing and or using differently? Any help would be much appreciated.
    Thanks;

    Hi Steve,
I have exactly the same problem with my new iMac and my Bose Companion speakers (the ones with the 2 small cubes and a sub). The Bose speakers do not use a digital audio connection - so using Toslink would not be the answer.
I double-checked the connection on the back of the iMac and found that I was able to push the plug in a little bit more (it sort of clicked into place) - and that definitely helped some. As long as nobody touches it, it runs static-free....but even the slightest touch on the cable (or even the iMac sometimes) results in horrible static.
I'm considering trying another set of speakers because of this issue. I'm calling Bose tech support tomorrow because of this issue to see if they have any suggestions. I'll post back if I get any good info from them.

  • When I dock my ipod touch into my bose speakers, the 365Live radio APP doesn't work. Does anybody know why?

When I dock my ipod touch into my Bose speakers, the 365LiveRadio APP doesn't work. It buffers and doesn't connect.
    Why ?

Audio through a dock connection is at line level, also called line out.  Line level volume is not adjustable.  You need to change the volume using the controls on the iHome device, or its remote.

  • Bose Speakers no Longer Work

I use a set of Bose speakers with my MacBook Pro, and all of a sudden, they no longer work with my MacBook. Not just iTunes, but all sound. I know it's not a problem with the speakers because they work just fine when I connect them to my iPhone and play music. It uses a regular headphone jack to connect to my MacBook. When it's unplugged, music plays fine through my MacBook speakers. When I plug them in, nothing plays--not through my Bose speakers, or my MacBook's. Sometimes, when the speakers are plugged in, when I hit play in iTunes, or something like a YouTube video, I hear a small pop in the speakers, like it recognuzes something is happening, but nothing plays.
I did nothing to cause this. My MacBook has been sitting on my desk since the last time the speakers worked. If anyone can help me out, I'd be very grateful.

Nevermind, problem solved. Somehow the output volume got turned down in my system setting.

  • How to connect 2 bose speakers from my Harmon kardon tuner ?

Hi all,I need some info on how to connect 2 bose speakers (30 serie)?connected to my tuner (harmon kardon)?to my sound card audigy2. Second, I will purchase soon x-fi xtrememusic sound card, will it be the sme way to connected as audigy2 ?Thanks.

Thanks Franktank,Is it right to assume that the "line out" on the sound card is a light green in color? (where you plug a set of headphone)? My Harmon Kardon is 6 years old, 80 watt rms per chanel, and it will be connected to the "AUX" in the back panel. Is the color red on the rca jack is the positi've? If so, I will plug it to the red "AUX" in the back of the receiver? Will this kind of connection will produce stereo sound? Is this the only way to plug 2 speakers on the sound card? Thanks.
