G5 Power LED on, won't power up

I just purchased a used Dual 2.5 GHz Power Macintosh G5 in immaculate condition. Worked fine for a couple of days, though I did notice that the fans would spin up loudly for a few seconds every now and then even while the computer was idle.
I decided to reset the PMU (which I have done many times over the years; I was once an Apple-trained systems engineer)I followed the recommended procedure; only pressed once, etc. Now the computer won't power up! The front power LED comes on and stays on when the AC cord is connected, but the computer doesn't start up or otherwise react to the power button. No fans, no video, nothing.
HELP!

Well, the computer is back up - a good thing, as it was an eBay purchase; returning it for another wasn't an option.
Apparently, when Apple says power up the computer 10 seconds after resetting the PMU, they mean WITHIN 10 seconds - pressed the CUDA, quickly plugged it in, and hit the power switch. Came up with fans at full power, what must have been LED #8 on, then settled down. Won't do that again. It also seems the odd fan behaviour that prompted the whole mess is gone.
You know, it shouldn't be this tricky. I remember resurrecting several QuickSilvers, which our service department had waiting for power supplies, by means of a CUDA reset. Apparently they hadn't done it "just right" and decided it was dead.

  • ThinkPad Z61t no LEDs and won't power on :(

Hi, I bought a referbished Lenovo ThinkPad model Z61t from a well known vendor back in may and it worked fine for several months but then just recently I tried to power it on and nothing happened.  I assume the battery was dead so I pulled out the power cable and plugged it in.  I noticed that the green LED didn't light up like normal and when I tried to power on the laptop again nothing happened.  I tried using a different power cable but it didn't work either.  Since this unit was referbished it only came with a 90 day warranty.  I don't know what else I can do to get this laptop working again.  Any suggestions?
For people who undestand circuits I did a test with a power tester and the yellow power connector on the back of the laptop.  When the yellow power connector is not connected to the laptop motherboard my power testing meter shows ~20 volts but when I plug the connector into the laptop motherboard like it's supposed to be my power testing meter shows ~0.5 volts.  Is that normal.   Why would the output of the power supply drop to such a low level?
My hypothesis is also my fear; that the motherboard is dead.

I found out that someone had spilt chicken soup on my laptop and it pretty much destroyed the logic board, optical drive, processor and other technical stuff.
    *heavy sigh*

  • Computer does not turn on, power LED goes off when power button is pressed

My Pavilion 17-e078nr has stopped working, it will not power on. When you push the power button, the power LED next to where the plug is goes off and takes several minutes before it comes back on. I've tried removing the battery and get the same results and with the batter in and AC disconnected the power button does nothing. I've also tried the hard reset with no luck. As far as I know, nothing has happened to the computer since last time it worked. My two theories are either the AC power is bad, or there is a problem internal to the laptop. The AC power is providing the 19.5V, I measured it using a multi meter, I'm just not sure if it's providing the required wattage, or if the connection to the laptop is secure, it feels a little loose, but at the same time the LED comes on, so I know it's getting a connection. Only thing I can think to try is go to a store that sells this type of computer and see if I can use one of their power supplies to power my computer, and/or plug my supply into one of their computers. Don't know how willing any store would be to allow me to do that though. Any one have any additional thoughts or advise?

Hi! I have the exact same problem... the LED on adapter, is very, very dim when connected.
At first I tried connecting my macbook to my roommate's adapter and had the same problem. then tried taking out the battery, and still had the same problem. I did the same thing with my roommate's macbook, but hers did actually turn on! it operated without the battery. Figured out it was problem with mine.
I kept on trying combinations battery, computer and adapter. turns our that my battery (which I thought at first was the problem) charges perfectly on my roommates mac, but wont charge on mine. her adapter won't work either on my computer. What I've been doing is charging my battery on her computer, then placing it on my mac, and it works. only thing that won't work is the adapter.
Went to a mac store, and they told me that the problem was a small cable o wire that went from the Magsafe point into the mac and that the LED was very dim because no energy was being drawn from that spot because of this little wire being broken. they gave me the name of this wire... very technical stuff so, completely forgot cause I didn't have anything near to write on.
I'd like to know if anyone has gone through this same ordeal, and had this wire replaced without any problems. When it comes to opening up my mac, I'm a bit skeptical, since warranty is expired and wouldn't want for a solution to become a bigger problem.

  • Power sot G3 won't power up

Camera won't power after being stored without batteries

How long was it is storage ?
There are only a few things you can do or check before considering getting it serviced
First and foremost how old are the batteries ? Even though they look like they are charging and charged they may be bad.
The cheapest thing to try is a new battery and or charger.. When you turn the camera on its like booting up a small computer with mechanical features that turn on and settle to defualts. That puts a big load on the battery, a weak or battery that is shorting out will fail. Also not using a battery, charging and discharging it for an extended period it not good either.
Next or in addition see if the battery door is closing properly and is not damaged in any way. There is a sensing switch in there that will not allow the camera to turn on if the door is not closed all the way or it is damaged.
Also check for dirt and or corrosion on the contacts in the battery box as well as the batteries. If they look dirty use a high quality plastic safe cleaner like DeOxit D5. Also look for damage to the contacts too in the battery box and on the batteries contacts.
If none of the above helps then the camera has an internal problem that will require disassembly, service and or parts.

  • IBook G3 800mhz powers & starts up, after a shutdown it won't power up

One day my iBook G3 800mhz was working fine. I shut it down and later went to turn it on and it wouldn't do anything... no startup chime, no fans, no lights, nothing. I tried resetting PRAM, PMU, and many other things which didn't work at all.
I had a local computer store check it out and they told me the Motherboard was fried. I pretty much wrote the iBook off as DEAD. I took the battery out and it sat that way for about a month.
Today, I put the battery back in and hit the power button, and IT POWERED UP & BOOTED! I couldn't believe it. I shut it down and hit the power button again... nothing, it was "dead" again. I took the battery out and let it sit that way for about 2 hours, put the battery back in, pushed the power button and it BOOTED JUST FINE. So, I shut it down, pushed the power button and it was "dead." I took the battery out again, let it sit for an hour. This time instead of installing the battery I just connected the power adapter, pressed the power button and it BOOTED. To determine if it was the battery, I left the power adapter plugged in, shut down the iBook and pressed the power button... NOTHING, "dead" again. So, it's not the battery, it's not the power cord.
When I do get it booted, I am able to do a succesful Restart by selecting it in the Finder. Also, whenever it does power up, I am able to reset the PRAM and it will start up. Whenever I do a Shutdown (either from the Finder or by pressing the power button) it won't power up unless I disconnect the battery and power adapter and let it sit for about an hour.
I've been through all the forums and many websites and have yet to find a fix for this problem.
    Anyone have any ideas?

    Hey Shim..,
Certified Apple Technician and he agreed that it is probably the transistor (what he called it) that is failing, since it's not holding Date & Time
OK but a transistor is a long way from a microprocessor. Uhh where did he get his...oh never mind.
I have read in some forums about the leaking super cap,
I'd be interested in those leads
but I haven't been able to find any photos or anything that shows where on the board this is located.
    Just put one up here, it's from a 12" G4 1.2 GHz:
    http://www.photolava.com/view/d5pr.html
They're pretty distinctive, so hard to miss.
Here's the blowed up one from the 500MHz 12" G3
    http://www.photolava.com/view/d5pu.html
    Now that's blowed up
Is this cap replaceable? Anyone know of any step-by-step guide that would show how to go about this, or know of any company that might do this sort of thing? If it's not too terribly expensive, I'd be willing to give it a try.
Well let's determine if it's bad first. Usually when these things fail it's pretty obvious.
I'd try blowing out all the chips we talked about first since I believe a tiny bit of smutz will cause a CMOS micro to crash.
It reminds me of when these early PMUs will crash and drag the battery down with it in a matter of days vs years.
One of the resets in those was to remove all power and let it sit just like you're doing here. This was called resetting the logic board and was SOP for a no startup situation.

  • Dual G5 won't power on - power led lights on push only

    Hi,
My 2Ghz Dual G5 doesn't turn on and I hoped someone could provide advice on repair.
When I push the power button the power led lights (once) but nothing else happens.
I have reset the pmu, replaced the internal battery and swapped RAM with known good.
I don't think my model has internal LEDs on the MB.
Would the power led still light if I have a bad power supply?
Is there any way I can tell if i have a bad motherboard rather than a bad power supply?
    Thanks,
    Tom

In the G5 manual, in the section on trouble-shooting, it says what one light blinking, two blinking, 3-blinking means.
I'd look it up for you right now but I'm at the libary, using their public computer, since my PowerPC G5 also died, at last, 4sure, last week. I had that light blinking three (3) times.
I've come to conclude it is a bad logic board that many other threads mention. Cost for repairs are very high.
I (seriously), without realizing it, went through some noted classic symptoms of "grief." -- First, there was Denial (i.e. Disbelief); then Anger; Then I tried last gasp measure to make a miracle happen, trying to "be reasonable and negotiate," a fix.
All repair people I contacted told me to buy something new. I "lnegotiated," some extended credit and creative bridge financing. (Um...can you spell: p-a-w-n shop....deliberately going into overdraft protection...whatever I had to do, etc.)
Today, I placed the order for a Mac mini, M239LL/A. ON EVERY SPECIFICATION it is better than my now dead PowerPC duel 2.3 G5 tower and cost one-third the price. Plus it has Bluetooth and Wi-fi.
The Black Friday Sales are soon approaching so this may be the best time to make the transition. It would have cost as much to ship and repair my G5 tower and not only do you get the latest version of iLife, Snow Leopard, but rebate deals that you can get when buying a new computer offered iWorks at half-price, discounts on other Apple software, and third-party software. I got a full $80.00 rebate on an HP F4480 all-in-one printer (that only cost $80.00...plus you get that free subscription to a Mac magazine and back on the cutting edge of computers instead of looking at other's ride the surf.
Ten days ago I was devestated. Today I am as excited and pleased as I was five years ago when I got the G5 tower.
EVERYBODY I talked to, at the library computer lab, friends, all nodded their heads sagely and said: "Yea, five years...that's about it for a computer."
It just took me ten days to 'go through the transition. It was strange that something so valuable suddenly was worth nothing; i.e. not even worth repairing.
I had 4.5GB of RAM. Never needed more. Now I'll have 4GBs of 150% faster ram, 14% faster CPU, the new apple age mainstream Intel chip, etc.
I was using two PCI-X slots...that's about the only thing I won't be restoring but their use was not necessary at all and PCI-X slots were almost out of date the day i got them and what I really wanted, a video graphic's card, didn't exist for PCI-X.
So...that was my experience with this unfortunately event -- the death of a good machine.
But I was very pleased to have 4.7 years of trouble free prime time computing and didn't really think about leapfrogging to the future and doing it again.
If my old G5 was still going I'd still be a-okay with it, but stuff was happening with software improvements that were for Intel only and that just, slowly at first, got more significant.
The death of my G5 was like a "wake up call!'

  • Qosmio X500 won't start and the power LED is blinks every 5 seconds

    Hi,
I need help my X500 won't start now. I tried to start the NB as usual and suddenly the X500 wont boot or even power up.
If I press power button it doesnt make any sound, the power LED on button and the second power LED just bliks once and turns of, and keep blinking every 5 seconds.
    I tried to:
    * remove battery and power up with AC only
    * power with battery only
    * remove battery hold power button for 30 seconds and more athen power with AC only, battery only
    but it didn't helped.
I checked the AC & Battery LEDs, but they are not flashing, they are just RED, so there is not proble in battery or AC.
Any idea where could be the problem?
    Thanks for help

  • NF750-G55 won't power up, almost no APS LEDs activity

    Hi there,
    Just purchased a brand-new NF750-G55 mobo and a Phenom II X3 720.
Installed mobo, cpu, stock heatsink and thermal compound, ram, psu and monitor only. Everything is powering up properly, shutting down, plugging everything in the case, with drives, gfx card... Power-on the computer with no problem, start a Win7 installation, and I leave when Windows disk is copying data.
When I come back a half an hour later, the computer is off. Pushing the on/off button leads to the power led to blink every second without stopping until I unplug the power cable.
Checking mobo, when I push the power-on button, the 1st of the 4 APS LEDs lights blue for half a sec and instantly powers off. Then nothing will even happen, even when pushing the power button again. Have to power off/unplug the psu and power back on to see the same thing happening.
Switched ram, psu, removed everything but cpu and heatsink (actually removed the cpu, cleaned it, applied thermal compount again...)...and ultimately, removed mobo from the case, nothing will work. The power button on the mobo lights up but won't power on the computer, and the heatsink won't even start working.
With I had a spare AMx mobo and a spare CPU and heatsink, but it's not the case, so I can't cross test...
Removing the cmos battery didn't help either...
Also, no beeps at all. And CPU looks perfectly fine, no bent pins, and put and removed from socket without any difficulty.
So, what do you guys think?
    Thx!
    edit: seen on another topic:

I found it on standby with the power LED flashing but it would not restart. Just the blue LEDs for <0.5 secs. I even reset the BIOS.
Could there be an Electrical Overstress on mboard damaging CPU?
Quote from: Bas on 29-July-11, 18:18:40
Could be 2 things: 1 PSU underpowered or broken (or both)...2 CPU overheating (something wrong with the heatspreader of cooler).
The blinking led shows it did an emergency shutdown to prevent damage.
I already tried with 4 different PSUs, Antec, CM, Corsair and OCZ, from 450 to 600W. All had the exact same behavior. So what is this freaking emergency shutdown caused by? Tried with Kingston and Patriot ram, so the only parts that haven't been cross tested are the mobo, the cpu and the heatsink...but again, it worked well for half an hour!

I have seen thousands of boards myself, but can still count the bad ones on two hands.
(if you forget the bad-desinged ones, but those show up in the forum in big numbers, like the last Intel 67 series before B3)
Me too, 2 bad boards in a year probably makes 2011 the worst year since I built my first computer back in '98. And unfortunately, these two boards are the same brand...
Quote from: Fredrik on 07-November-11, 22:08:19
It worked till you put it in the case. User related. Probably a stand-off too many and/or motherboard under-side got scratched in the procedure.
nope...check my writing again: worked for 10min out of the case, then for an hour into the case. THEN it stopped working.

  • PC won't boot, power LED on but, can't power up

I've tried everything and at this point I think it's my power supply.
I came home yesterday and my PC was off (it was on when I left).  I noticed the power LED was on (steady, not blinking) but, none of the switches would work.  I tried unplugging the PS and letting it sit for awhile and then trying it again but, again it wouldn't boot and the power LED just stays a steady green.
I only have 18amps on my +12V rail could this be the problem?  See my signature for complete specs.  I'm running an Antec Silent Power 350w PS (it came with my Antec SLK2650 case).
    Any thoughts?
P.S. What does a solid power LED light indicate?  I couldn't find info on this anywhere.

I just ran out and bought a new power supply with 26A on the +12V line.  It was an Antec True 430 or something like that.  Nothing happens still.  The green light indicating power lights up and stays on but, nothing turns, no fans, no hard drives, nothing.  I'm thinking at this point it's the motherboad ... again!
Oh, just in case I checked to make sure the board was grounded correctly everywhere and it was, I'm guessing something got shorted on the either the ATX 12V line or the bigger power line that goes to the motherboard...
Oh well, no more MSI for me guys, they just don't want to cooperate with me.

  • Satellite Pro A120-151 - Won't turn on and power LED is blinking

My A120-151 shut down when I was using it. The power LED on the laptop is blinking: short-long-long-short-short-short-long-short
Does anyone know what this error code is?

There's a whole range of error codes associated with the power lights (including both orange and green flashes) They would need to be decoded by a Technician and given that it's under warranty I'd suggest it goes straight back..
The only exception to this is if you have recently changed the RAM? If so, if it is not properly seated then it can not be recognised and the laptop will fails to start.
If you have done this, try removing and *securely* reinstalling the RAM (make sure you take the battery and power lead out first!)

  • HP 6735s won't boot, power LED blinks 7 times

The HP 6735s laptop stopped working.  Only sign of life, power LED flashes 7 times after on/off switch is pressed.  What's wrong, experts?

Try a hard reset. Sometimes it works and is always the first step to take.
remove the battery and the ac adapter plug from the laptop.
press and hold the power button for fifteen seconds.
install either the battery or ac adapter power and press the power button to attempt a boot into the OS.
If that doesn't work then remove the hard disk to see if it gets past the splash screen and the BIOS whines that it can't find a bootable OS. That would indicate a hard disk failure.
Also worth tying is removing the memory module(s) from the DIMM slots and then reinstalling them. That reseats the modules and cleans some oxidation off the module pins (if there is any)
Another, perhaps a laptopsaver (in a manner of speaking) is the HP Pavilion dv2000/dv6000 and Compaq Presario  v3000/v6000 Series Notebook PCs - HP Limited Warranty... Check it and see if your laptop is covered.

  • Cisco WLSE 1130 won't power on.

I have a WLSE 1130 that the previous admin had just sitting on a shelf not being used, in fact, I don't think it's ever been used. I had powered it on to give it a basic config, IP, ect. and I issued the shutdown command and powered it off. Now, when I plug AC back into it, it won't power on. The power supply fan kicks on and the power LED blinks at about 2 second intervals. Is it in a security mode or did I power it down wrong? Any help would be great. Thanks!

While connecting the power make sure that the equipment must be grounded. Never defeat the ground conductor or operate the equipment in the absence of a suitably installed ground conductor. Contact the appropriate electrical inspection authority or an electrician if you are uncertain that suitable grounding is available.
