G5 power problem

I've recently been given a PowerMac G5 and as soon as I turn it on, the fans spin for a couple seconds and then it shuts off...Any idea at whats going on with it?

MacBook Pro Power Problems.

The next day, I switch on, but the computer will only boot up when the power lead is attached. When the computer comes on, usually as normal, the charge always shows 0%. When it is recharged the whole process repeats itself. Help please.

Thanks for responding. My MBP is late 2009 and the battery has never been replaced. When I look at battery condition, it registers as normal, as it does when I do the power checks you suggested. When I plug in the power cord it glows green and within a few seconds it is on amber, until fully charged. I've done the SMC reset. I noticed this morning that after using it last night the battery capacity was 93% and an expected duration of about 5.5 hours was listed. After limited use this morning, restricted to email admin only, the charge level had dropped to 88%, but the predicted duration was only 2.75 hours. Currently the level is 73% and the duration is 3 hours, although I have accessed the web several times. Presumably there is some sort of algorithm that looks at current usage and predicts the duration. I will continue to monitor this to see what happens. In the meantime if you have any more thoughts!!!

Hard Disk or Power Problem

I have a Powerbook that I have had for many years now. Recently it hasn't been booting up. I hit the start button and it chimes like it usually does but the screen and hard disk don't do anything. Sometimes it does boot up but it doesn't start easily. When it does boot sometime freezes when I go through the login and when loading the desktop but once the desktop is loaded it works fine until it goes to sleep. I just bought a new battery for it this summer. I have been reading though the Discussions and I figure my computer is either having power problems when starting up or I need a new hard disk. Any thoughts?

You will find step by step directions at iFixit. Note that your computer does not have the EMI finger referred to in the directions. Also, be especially careful with the tiny screws in the sides on the computer. You don't want to strip the heads or it will be very difficult to get them out. Here are few tips you may find helpful:
• Print out the ifixit directions as well as the screw guide ahead of time.
• Be sure you have the right tools. You don't want to damage the screw heads or you may never get them out. And the Torx screw driver is critical. For a spudge I use the handle of an old toothbrush (choose one made of hard plastic), cut off the brush and beveled the handle end like a flat blade screw driver). For some spudge jobs a credit card will do the trick.
• Click on the pages of each step which involved removing screws to enlarge, then print out the pages. Poke holes in the paper where the screws were removed, poke the screws in the holes and stack the pages in order in which there were removed. Reassembling is a lot easier. No cups to tip over and spill. No guessing. Each screw is exactly in the right place. You can use an ice cube tray, egg carton, dixie cups etc. I previously used small medicine cups one for the screws in each step. I nested them so that the last ones out and the first to go back in are on top. (Some users report cutting up the screw guide and placing the applicable section in each container.)
• Be very careful pulling out leads. Hold the lead as close to the plug as possible and wiggle (the plug ) to loosen its grip. Don’t hold the wires and pull as that can damage the cable, or worse, in some instances pull the wires out of the plug. Indeed, some users have pulled the socket off the logic board! Use needle nose pliers or tweezers if you can access the plug, or nudge the plug with a small instrument to help loosen its grip.
• Use force gently in removing parts. Separating upper and lower case takes some doing. Use a plastic tool (spudge) so as not to leave marks.
• Refer to the screw guide when reassembling computer. Putting longer screws in the wrong place can perforate the circuit board.
So will I be able to put the OS and everything on by the installation discs?
Yes you will. Indeed you may be able to clone the contents of your current HDD to the new HDD by placing the drive in a firewire enclosure and formatting and cloning the new drive before installing it in the computer. If you have data you need to backup and have a sound installation on your current HDD this might be an option to consider.
When you get your new HDD it will need to be formatted before you can install the OS on it. If you need directions for formatting and installation, I can post step by step directions here for you. Let me know.

Intermittent power problem Canon 5D Mark iii

My Canon 5D Mark iii (2 years old) has an intermittent power problem, as described below. It may simply be a question of cleaning the terminals that the battery connects to. I haven’t tried since I can’t reach them at the bottom of the battery compartment.
Details as follows:
this is a recent problem in the last 3 weeks
the problem occurs with all three Canon batteries that I use
from time to time when the power is on, the camera suddenly loses all power and displays an “empty” battery image
sometimes it happens of its own accord while no demand is being placed on the camera
but more usually it occurs at the moment of focusing (I use back focus on the * button)
it is often fixed by turning the power off and then on again. This fixes it half the time
it is always fixed by turning the power off, removing and then re-inserting the battery
needless to say this is very annoying!
Since coming back from a trip, while transferring images from the camera to my computer, I noticed that the (almost) full battery started showing “empty”.
The transfer was completed successfully, and when the camera was disconnected from the computer, the battery showed that it had lots of charge left. Very puzzling!

It sounds like either the battery terminals aren't getting a solid contact or there's a fault (something loose or grounding out) inside the camera. But if something were genuinely loose or grounding out inside the camera, then power cycling or even re-inserting batteries would probably not fix it -- which makes me suspect it's still something outside the camera.
Are any of the batteries new, or are they all about the same age as the camera?
Batteries only last a few years but it'll depend on how they were used. In other words if all three were used about the same and enough charge cycles to be at the end of their reliable life... it might be time to replace them.
It's difficult for the internal battery terminals to get dirty unless the battery itself had something on the battery iteself when you inserted it. You can try a bit of denatured alcohol on a cotton swap to reach in and clean the terminals. Also, inspect the batteries to make sure they're all clean.

Mini Power Problem

My mini (2009, Intel core2 duo, Snow Leopard, up to date) has a power problem. Perhaps it has overheated.
It shut down unexpectedly, without warning.
I try to start it by pressing the power button. The power light turns on briefly. there is no chime. Then the light goes out.
I tried resetting the SMC. No effect. I tried holding the power button in. The light stayed on for several seconds, then flashed rapidly 10 times, and turned off.
I have given it over half an hour to cool, and placed a fan behind it to help.
No change.
Thoughts?
Other minor points. I upgraded the RAM and hard disk 6 months ago. No problem.
It is running dual monitors, Wireless is turned off, ethernet is on, and I have a speaker plugged through the firewire port. But I tried disconnecting everything and restarting naked. No help.
I'll try again now... nope. Please advise.

Next bit of data. The chime does not happen. That seems to have been a single occurrence. I've opened the mini, and see the internal green LED on the motherboard is lit. When I hit the power button, then may be a tiny whirr. I'm not sure whether it is the disk or a fan. But it lasts a fraction of a second, then the main external power light goes out, and the motherboard green light also goes off, then comes back on. I'm thinking there may be a big power draw (disk drive? Fan?) exceeding the power available, and it shuts off. Possible?

NX6800 Ultra T2D256 Power problem...

I have read all threads I can find on the NX6800 Ultra T2D256 but can't find the solution. I keep getting the "power down because not enough power" error at the start up of XP Home. With the Thermaltake Purepower 560w ps, I'd think it is more than enough to power this card. I have installed the card in my son's computer and he get's the same msg. I have made sure the pins are tight and making contact, it's set up on one rail, and I have tried every combonation I can think of. I called Thermaltake and they say it should run the card fine so they are sending me a replacment ps. For some reason I just don't feel the replacment will do it. Could it be the card? Or is it the slow AMD 2100 CPU? I don't what that would have to do with the power problem of the video card though... I'm pritty sure everting is up to date but I could have missed something...
Any suggestions would be appreciated...

Ok, I will try the 2 power cables again and I take it that nothing else but the card should be run on those 2 lines?
Also, that leaves me with only 2 power lines to run 2 cd/cdr, 2 HD's, and 1 floppy. I also have 5 case fans.
Now can you point me to an explination of what "replacing all the AGP/Gart drivers and doing a driver clean on the NVidia drivers" is?
I am running the ATI 850Pro on that computer right now so I know to un-install the ATI drivers of course before installng the NVidia card. I have never heard of "Gart" and didn't know there were seperate AGP drivers from the mother board drivers...
Still got a lot to learn and thank you for all your help...

Brightside with manufacturer power problems

Verizon needs to step up and make this right.
I am on my third Samsung Brightside. All three have had some sort of power problem. The first would auto restart after I powered it down. The second would shutdown when I slide it open. This new one shuts down for no apparent reason. Obviously, many others are having the same issue per the discussion board. Verizon said there is nothing I can do, but continue to return these for replacement. This is not acceptable.
Each device was replaced with a refurb. The 2nd return (a refurb) was used for less than a week before it started powering down upon slide open. Verizon tried to charge me for the replacement due to errosion. I argued that there is no reasonable argument Verizon could make to charge me as I had the insurance. Although the agent agreed to remove the charge, this was sneaky and underhanded. I am very disappointed in Verizon.
I am still using the third Brightside which shuts down for no apparent reason. Is there any way to get a different phone without being penalized?

this has to do with the power button's position on the phone. when you move your body might hit the power button (kind of like a butt dial). The only way for you not to hit the power button is to have a hard covering on the power button or get a flip phone where the power button is being covered. for the shutdown on the slide the power button is sticking down when you slide the phone. Hold down the power button when you open it and it will shut down.

1130AG Power problem

I have this AP and it has a problem. If I plug in only the power injector with nothing plugged into the network side of the injector, nothing happens. If I plug an ethernet cable from at Linksys POE switch to the network side nothing happens. If I plug an ethernet cable from a Cisco 3560G POE switch to the network side of the power injector it powers fine.
Once the AP is booted, I can pull the cable from the network side of the injector to the Cisco 3650 and the AP will continue to run. Have tried multiple different pwrinj3 and AC adapter combination and nothing works. I know it isn't the power injector that is the problem. Something in the AP is not working correctly.
Once the AP has been running for a while, if I unplug the power injector from the AP it will die, but if I plug it in again in less than 30 seconds the system will boot again just fine. What is it about the 3560G that allows the AP to boot when nothing else will.
Any thoughts?

What if you connect the AP directly to a PoE switch (without power injector). does it work?
Have you eliminated the cables thing? bad cables cause power problems usually. try to eliminate that part.
If all is fine and the AP is not working it could probably be an AP hardware (or maybe software) problem.

Notebook gx700 - power problems

I am a happy owner of a GX700,
The laptop worked fine for several years.
Unfortunately for some months now I have problems with booting.
Believing it was a disk problem I proceeded to replace it but the problem remains.
The problem occurs only at the first turn.
Once the machine has booted I can turn the notebook all the time without problems.
looks like a power problem on the motherboard. could it be?

Were you able to find out the problem? From what I can see it could be the processor, motherboard or it could be something as simple as the power adapter not supplying the necessary power or amperage any more.

Wake / Power problems

I love my MacBook... However, I have been having the same problems regarding Sleep / Power management etc. I searched support but have seen no updated in the KB.
1. Wake -- Several time my MB has not wake from sleep regardless of what I do. Sometimes it will not turn on at all.
2. I have shut the MB down only to come back and find a buring hot MB that is neither sleeping nor Off.
3. I have reset the PMU, no change.
4, Sometimes I need to remove the battery and reinstall in order to start it.
Power problems seem to be complicdted issues with the units
Any other suggestions would be great

I've been toying with this issue and I found that if my Bluetooth mouse gets moved before I open the lid then my MacBook is already waiting at the password prompt. If I then go and enter my password it goes back to sleep. I've got to be careful not to move the mouse otherwise it wakes the machine while the lid is still closed. But if I turn off the bluetooth wakeup then the mouse will not keep the MacBook from going to sleep while I'm using it.

Xserve Power Problem

i have an xserve g5 single 2.0ghz. it is having a new weird power problem where it restarts after about 2 hours. i am almost positive that it isnt the power source (the wall) because i have tried different plugs and still the same problem. although it could be because it has never done this a couple of months ago when it was in a different part of the room. i do not leave it on 24/7, it is only on for max 3 hours a day. it also really only restarts when i do video editing and use it as a scratch disk. i need to know if its the power supply or my wall plugs or the power cord

Your two best tools here are monitoring and logging.
Server Monitor will report way more than you want to know about the internal hardware of your Xserve. Run it on another machine (so you can read the log after the Xserve shuts down) and it will monitor temperature, memory, voltage etc and any hardware anomalies should register here first.
Open Console and check out the log right before the shutdown for any messages - short of yanking the cord out of the wall just about any strangeness should be registered in log messages from one source or another. If you computer is deciding to shutdown because of anything it detects it will definitely be in there.
If you can find no apparent cause the only way to rule out the electricity is to put a UPS between the computer and wall and see if the behavior changes.

G60-235DX power problems

Ok - here's a backwards power problem for you that I cant figure out. I have a laptop (G60-235DX) that will not turn on with the AC Adater plugged in. - you push power, the lights blink, then nothing. Unlpug the AC Adapter and it boots just fine. The battery will run for a good hour, so I don't think it is the battery....the AC adapter (OEM from HP or even 2 targus "universal" adapters don't matter. If the computer turns off (whether by software or user) - it will not power up on AC. Now, once it is booting, you can plug the AC adapter in and it works just fine.....but with update restarts, etc.... it is becoming a huge hassle.

U160 power problem

Hi,
My U160 has, what I believe to be is, a power problem. My USB mouse (or other USB device) most of the time works fine. On a different computer it always works fine. But, when I plug in additional USB devices (into one of the other ports), or when the internal fan starts up, I will get brief mouse freezes. This is really annoying. After these freezes start, even if the fan stops or if I remove the additional USB device, the mouse will continue to suffer these freezes. Other USB mice also have this issue. It happens on all three of the USB ports.
I have upgraded the bios with the December release. I am also running the power management software. This problem persists.
Has anybody else experienced this issue? Are there any recommendations for a resolution?
I am running Win 7 pro X64.

The only thing about this is I never tried the new version. I always used the version from 2009 which came on a utility disc that I bought.
When it opens, click on ports. The screenshot shows my iphone drawing 500ma and my external keyboard drawing 100ma.

I found a trial version that works better. Make sure you don't install the bogus toolbar. This shows a true reading of what is drawing what.
You might also want to open Windows event viewer and see if there is anything weird going on there.

Power problems with my kt6v

I'm having power problems with my board and cpu. I'm starting to think it may be the power supply but not sure.
I've tried 2 mb's thinking they might have been defective, nope same result.
I've tried 2 cpu's thinking the same, nope same result.
I've got a AMD 2400+
on a MSI NT6V mobo
512mb 2700 ddr
nvidia gforce2 64mb pci
Now the problem, I set everything up in the case. double check all my connections, to make sure everything is where it's supposed to be. And the jumpers(what few their are) are set correctly.
Ok good, Power up, the system shut's itself right back down.
That's the problem. This power supply i'm using is semi old, it run's this old p2 board just fine. it's got the extra 4pin plug for the newer boards that require them. So could this problem be related to my power supply? or something else.

Amp ratings look good, but, the 150W max is a show stopper. Should be closer to 200W. I would try a better PSU, such as a model 365 Enermax (26A @ 12V).
One more Item to check, are there any unused metal standoffs behind the board?
From the way you state it powers on for a few seconds, then shuts down, I suspect either the PSU is just WAY too weak to power this system, or there is a short to ground causing the rapid shutdown.
Check to insure the CPU fan is spinning up too, as that can also cause a quick shutdown.
