G5 PowerMac + Aftermaket "N"  PCI Cards

Hello All
Just wondering if anyone has used the NewerTech or such PCI wirelss "N" cards ?
I have a Airport Extreme Base Station (Fast Ethernet)at one end of the house my G5 is at the other end of the house, I need to increase the signal at the computer, also it's "G": at the moment, so converting to "n" may help this ??
Any suggestions
Thanks

Hi,
I have the NewerTech usb stick, it works most of the time, but the drivers are picky and do not always work. I would not count on it for a remote reboot.
Hope that helps!

  • PowerMac 7600 and PCI USB 2 Card

About a year ago I upgraded my daughter's PowerMac 7600 with 512 of RAM and Sonnet Crescendo G4 1GHz Card. Using XPostFacto 4 I installed MacOS X Tiger. After resolving a few issues it's been a year of nice performance for this machine (with zero manteinance). So I decided to fully upgrade it with another 512 of RAM, add an ATI PCI 7000 Radeon and a PCI Firewire/USB 2 Tango Card. The Hard Drive is a 60GB Maxtor with two partitions: One for Mac OS 9.1 and the other for Mac OS X Tiger 10.4.11.
After the upgrade I've noticed that when connecting devices to the USB ports under Mac OS X Tiger the Finder tends to freeze and even the whole System so I have to force restart. When using the USB ports under Mac OS 9.1 it works fine.
I've used a generic USB MP3 player (DOS formatted), an Apollo imation USB Drive (Mac formatted) and a USB Flash Wristband (Mac formatted).
The machine configuration is as follows:
PowerMac 7600 with Sonnett Crescendo G4 1GHz Card
8 128 MB RAM Modules for 1GB of Memory (All from OWC, same specs)
Sonnet Tempo Ultra ATA 66 PCI Card
    ATI Radeon 7000 PCI Card
Sonnet Tango Firewire/USB 2 PCI Card
    Maxtor 60GB IDE Hard Drive
    LaCie CDRW IDE Drive
    Any suggestions?
    Thanks for all your help!

The specs on the PCI card state:
    Mac Compatibility
Power Mac® G3 (Blue & White)(2) and Power Mac G4 (with PCI slots)
Power Mac G5 (with PCI or PCI-X slots)
    Mac OS® X Version 10.5.2+, 10.4(3), or 10.3(3)
Mac OS 9 (at USB 1.1 speed)
However, just because older PM 7600s are not listed, it appears to be hardware compatible. It could be something related to the fact that you used XPostFacto to run OS 10.4. Many older PMs could only use 2-port USB PCI cards. On my old PM 6500, I used a Belkin model F5U005 2-port USB PCI card. I don't know if this card would provide USB 2.0 when running 10.4.

  • SATA PCI card in powermac, which one?

Im looking for a SATA PCI card for a power mac and was wondering what is the cheapest option can I use any card or just ones specifically made for mac?
    Any help appreciated.

A controller card plugs directly into the computer's hardware. An adapter lets you plug a SATA drive into another interface which in turn plugs into the computer. I don't have experience with either but I suspect the controller would be faster since the adapter would be limited by the speed and maybe even drive size limitations (if such) for whatever interface you were using. It depends upon the computer. For which kind are you thinking of buying one?

  • LG GGC-H20L with Sonnet Tempo Sata Pci Card into Powermac G5

    Hello dear Community.
I have a LG GGC-H20L HD-DVD/Blu Ray Drive. And a Sonnet Tempo SATA PCI Card.
The Problem is, that the Computer cant find the LG GGC-H20L Drive. The Sonnet Tempo Card it find. Broke i drivers? And where i can get it?
Can one of you Help me?

    Nokiman
I made sure there was a good 'thunk' as it slotted in to the PCI slot everytime I installed it, I wiggled it to make sure, I applied reasonable pressure to make sure it was seated correctly, etc. I tried everything, short of using a hammer! Still no joy. I have a PCI firewire card which works perfectly in all slots.
I've sent it back to the supplier for a replacement/upgrade to the Tempo-X 4+4.
    Thanks for the tips.

  • IPod touch will not work with USB 2.0 PCI Card?

I have a dual processor PowerMac G4 that has USB 2.0 via a PCI card. When I plug in the iPod nothing at all happens. I haven't read anything about PCI cards not being compatible with the touch. Is anyone else having this problem?

Just thought I'd add my 2 cents...I've got the same problem...I've had a Keyspan USB 2.0 5 port card in my Dual MDD G4 for years and it's worked fine. Well, until a few days ago when I tried updating some stuff on our iPods. It would initially start working then lose connection. Now nothing at all with 5 iPods. It won't even show up on the desktop under Disk Mode. I did the same and it works fine under the old stock USB 1.0 but slooooooowwww. Is this yet another problem with Leopard? I've searched the Keyspan site and they don't have any updated drivers. Guess I'll look for a Belkin as well...ugh!!! Leopard is horrible! First no printer drivers, then no iSub support, now this!

  • Can you use regular PCI cards in Mac Pro?

My G5 is getting a bit long in the tooth and I want to buy a Mac Pro. It says that it supports PCI Express cards, but I have several PCI cards in my PowerMac. Since I don't want to buy them all over again, I was wondering if they will work in the Mac Pro?

  • USB 2.0 on PCI card no longer supported?

Curious as to whether anyone else has experienced the same problem I had trying to update via a USB 2.0 port on a PCI card. I just updated to 1.1.1 yesterday, and while connected to a USB 2.0 port on my PCI card (my old Mac never had built-in 2.0 ports), all **** broke loose after the download was complete and ready to be installed. I've never had problems syncing via the PCI card's USB 2.0 port up to now, but during the "preparing iPhone for . . ." process, my iPhone would not respond to the installer, resulting in an error message. After repeated attempts, I switched over to a built-in USB 1.1 port and then had to do a complete restore (which took several hours), but was successful. Oddly though, after the restore, if I try to use the USB 2.0 port on the PCI card again to sync, I get an error message saying that the contents of the iPhone cannot be read, and that I'll have to restore again (even though the phone is fully functional). If I switch back to the built-in USB 1.1 port, everything is fine and I'm not asked to restore the phone. Looks like I can no longer use my USB 2.0 ports (on the PCI card), which worked fine prior to 1.1.1. I know that my weeks/months are numbered with this older Mac (doesn't appear that Leopard will be supported on this Mac), but I just wasn't planning to purchase a new Mac just yet. Perhaps Apple is now checking for "built-in" USB 2.0 during these updates and not supporting USB 2.0 via a PCI card? Would sort of make sense, given the number of users who continue to have problems just trying to get iTunes to recognize their phone (i.e., eliminate the 3rd-party PCI cards). I doubt I'll attempt another update to my iPhone with this Mac. Let me know if you've had a similar experience using a PCI card rather than "built-in" USB ports. Thanks.

Thanks everyone for the great info!
I had an issue with my wife's Powermac G4 Sawtooth and went out and got a Belkin USB 2.0 PCI card to replace the less compatible usb 2.0 pci card. It looks a card with the NEC chipset definitely does the trick.
Her iPhone now syncs pretty much perfectly on the Belkin card. Yaaay!
Of course, it doesn't help that there is another syncing issue going on right now, which kind of threw me:

  • Does Apple make a wireless pci card for the G5?

I have a new Airport Extreme base station, but my PowerMac G5 still has the old airport pci card. Does Apple make an "n" pci card that I can use to swap out my old wireless card?

No. Apple does not have an 802.11n solution for your PowerMac G5.

  • PCI card

I have a PCI card in my old G4 power mac. When I tried to fit it in my newer mac, which is a powermac g5 - the card doesn't appear to fit. It's a PCI card, but the little notch is in the slot to put it in. Is there any cure? This is a Delta 66 - enabling me to hook up my tape player to my computer and recording voice with music. Is there any help out there? Thanks

    HI-
Your machine is a dual 2.5GHz PCI-X model:
    http://www.everymac.com/systems/apple/powermacg5/stats/powermac_g5_2.5dp.html
The expansion slots accept PCI or PCI-X cards with either 32-bit or 64-bit address and data buses.
The expansion slots support universal and +3.3 V cards, but not 5 V signalling. The cards are required to use the standard PCI fence described in the specification.
Note: 5 V keyed or signalling cards do not work in the Power Mac G5 computer.
The computer’s case has four openings in the back for access to I/O connectors on cards in the three expansion slots and the AGP slot. Each slot has room for a full size 12.335-inch or short 6.926-inch card. The numbering on the casing is 1 through 4 and corresponds to the label on the PCB. *Number one is the AGP slot* and numbers *two through four are the PCI or PCI-X slots*.
    PCI/PCI-X Developers Note
PCI or PCI-X cards cannot be installed in slot #1.
This is reserved for the AGP graphics card only.
M-Audio lists compatibility of the Delta 66 with most G5's, with a couple of exceptions:
    http://www.m-audio.com/index.php?do=support.faq&ID=b9f145c1c2ef3fd398ae0c17b1a4c b48
There should be no physical reason for the PCI card to not be installable in slots 2, 3, or 4, unless the PCI card is 5V keyed.

  • Suggest USB PCI card for PM 7200/120

    Hi
I want to instal a USB PCI card in a 7200/120. It's running OS 8.6 with Apple USB Support 1.4.1 software. Also have Toast Titanium 5.2 with its Toast USB support extensions loaded. Also tried running OS 9.1 on alternative startup drive with same Apple USB Support 1.4.1 etc.
I've installed a 5 port USB v2 (32-bit host interface compliant to PCI spec release 2.2 and backward compatible with USB 1.1) card from Laser (www.laserco.net). The packaging says it's compatible with Win 98/98SE/ME/2000/XP but no mention of Mac. The 7200 doesn't see the card installed in PCI slot (checking Apple System Profiler). Double-checked to make sure the PCI was securely seated in the slot, tried different slot etc.
I also tried re-installing Apple USB Support v.1.2 on the OS 8.6 volume but still no good.
I'm in Australia and wondered if anyone can recommend a USB card that actually works in the 7200?

    Claudio,
Two years ago, this question was very common. Warnings were given about certain Belkin cards not working well. With the passage of time and the drop in price of newer used systems, few people spend money on upgrading older equipment. It can be done but the beige G3 is the minimum platform that most will work on. Here is a guide to Mac resources in Australia.
    http://www.tandb.com.au/buying/
This site sells a wide array of older Mac products. They offer an interesting list of prior models that they still buy, including 7300 models and IIci models. The 7200 is not on their list of models that are in demand.
    http://resale.headgap.com/
"TRADE-INS OR SELL YOUR OLD MAC
Remember we pay wholesale prices. Many times when you are ready to upgrade your old system may not be worth much, especially to a dealer who is used to buying in quantity at wholesale prices and has the units shipped in bulk truck freight. Boxing and shipping your old system costs a few dollars. Here lately we have been having more trouble locating older systems people are still buying. We will begin offering trade-ins or to buy outright certain older systems. The following are on the list: PowerMac G4, iMac G4, QuickSilver G4, Blue & White (REV 2 Only), G3 Desktops, PowerMac 7300, Quadra or Centris 650, and Mac IICI's and SI's. The units need to be cosmetically in good condition and working (at least chiming). Trade in value will vary from the top wholesale price for extra clean, that exceed stock configurations and down for less that prime units. We are also purchasing good used Apple Desktop Bus Mouse II ADB Mice, working StyleWriters, and SCSI Zip Drives."
Hope this helps. My experience with buying USB cards for Macs convinced me to only buy cards that are already installed in a working used Mac. The Mac costs $15 US and the card is free. I realize that your market is somewhat different. However, if it is hard to find a working card here, it will be even harder there.
Take note, even Headgap does not want Rev. 1 Blue and White Macs. Avoid them if you have a choice.
This company has iMacs for under $200 in Australia. That may be high and it may not be a current price.
    http://www.newwavesystems.com.au/pre-owned_imac.html
They also show a PowerMac G4/400MHz for $150 Australian here:
    http://www.newwavesystems.com.au/pre-owned_powermac.html
That would be money well spent compared to any upgrades to a 7200. Otherwise, find a recycler who knows a thing or two about Macs and wait for them to come across the right card for you.

  • Hi everyone, I have an old g4 desktop it runs on 0S 10.3. I want to get connected to my wireless router but I am getting a bit confused on what I need to buy to do this. I have looked on ebay at pci cards, usb cards

    Hi everyone,
I have an old g4 desktop which runs on osx 10.3. I want to get it connected to my wireless router but I don't know what I need to buy to do this. I have tried a usb card which did not work. Do I need a pci card or an airport extreme card?
    Many thanks,

To build on what Tesserax says, not all USB sticks will work on Panther, but here is one that does:
    http://eshop.macsales.com/item/NewerTech/MXP3802NU2C/
I have one of these and it works with both a PowerMac G4 running Leopard and a 1998 PowerBook G3 running Panther.
And here's a little more free advice.
Some of the older G4 desktops like my PowerMac 3,6 only take the original AirPort card, which is different from the newer machines that take the newer AirPort Extreme card. Both are available if you hunt for them, but modern WPA-2 encryption is not supported on the original AirPort card, so it will not be able to join your network if it has this encryption. The newer AirPort Extreme airport card does support WPA-2 encryption, as does the NewerTech USB AirPort stick. If your G4 takes the older card, you cannot plug in the newer AirPort Extreme card. I have not looked lately, but I believe the sockets themselves are different. In any event, the NewerTech USB stick is cheaper than an AirPort card.
If you don't already have Mactracker, you can download it for free here:
    http://mactracker.ca/
You can look up your Mac on it and see which AirPort card it has. You can also check out what upgrades are available.
A couple of good things to do is to max out the RAM and upgrade the OS. OWC will have the RAM and they are very knowledgable about Macs and can advise you on any hardware upgrades they offer. You would probably have to look at EBay to find a retail disc for upgrading to Tiger or Leopard, and preferably the latest version of the OS that is supported. Panther has some limitations, and I beleve that Google no longer supports Panther so you might need to find a different browser if you stay with Panther.
    Good luck!

HI a brody, I was reading your exchange with someone else, and I thought about asking you about a problem I'm having with my G5. First of all, i'm fairly illiterate computer wise, so please excuse me if i say something absolutely stupid. I have Mac OS X 10.5.6 and it crashed two weeks ago while viewing a documentary my daughter gave me on a CD. It just froze, no mouse, no keyboard. I pushed the start button for five seconds to turn it off. Waited a few minutes and turned it back on again. It didn't chime and it didn't boot. I pressed the button again, but this time a re-pressed it immediately after it went off, and it booted without a chime. It stayed on for about 15 minutes and froze again. I called the apple store near me and they asked me to bring it in, and replaced the hard drive. Paid $191.25. Got back home and turned it on, it chimed, booted, and after 20 minutes froze again. I called them and they told me that it needed a new logic card. I decided to research the problem a bit more because after the hard drive fiasco I'm doubtful the diagnostic skills of the genius bar near me inspire the trust necessary to spend another 900 dollars. I got on this chat room and read your chat in which you asked another guy if he had any Logitech products in his system. I have a Logitech THX sound system connected to my G%. I disconnected after reading your comments. In your experience... What can be going wrong? What can I do? I'll appreciate any light you can shed on this. THanks.

  • Suggestion To Apple: PCIe Cards On Apple Store

    TWIMC,
I'm probably posting this in the wrong place, but here goes. I picked up a Mac Pro last week and I'm thrilled so far. My only problem is that I need to replace the Firewire and USB2 cards in my PowerMac with PCIe versions for the Pro. They're not easy to find.
Which brings me to the point. It would be win-win if Apple put these as third-party options on their store. Saves customers scrabbling for hard-to-find cards, Apple sells more, third parties make money too. Everybody's happy. PCIe is still the exception out here. Almost all PCs have PCI slots as well as PCIe so they don't need these cards like we do.

You can find info if you look.
http://www.xlr8yourmac.com is common for having reports on compatible cards.
http://www.macsales.com keeps a number of PCIe cards, USB, FW800, eSATA etc.

  • SCSI ultra320 PCI card?

No one in the Powermac G4 has answered my question so I thought I'd try here. I recently acquired some SCSI ultra 320 drives and would like to set up a SCSI RAID in my Gigabit Ethernet. Only problem is I can't find a regular PCI card anywhere that supports SCSI ultra 320 that isn't PCI-X since my PCI bus is pre PCI-x. I don't know if there is a solution to this problem or not...I figured people here would know more about SCSI than newer mac users so hopefully someone can help. The only reason I want to do this is because I obtained the drives for free and they are 10,000 RPM which would really gain speed if I used a RAID set with them. If anyone has a solution or insight please let me know...

you say that I will see huge performance gains...but depending on my raid configuration my reads or writes may suffer.
I'm guessing, based on your info, that whichever raid I choose will still have faster read/write times than my IDE drives correct?
The 10,000 RPM drives are faster than any IDE Drive Apple shipped in a G4. IDE did not win over SCSI because it is BETTER. It won because it is CHEAPER. Consumers were not willing to pay the premium for the extra performance -- they wanted higher capacity more than they wanted better performance.
The SCSI drives you have are fast. Making them into a RAID array will make them seem a bit faster. But the issues are complex. This article articulates Apple's simplified position about RAID, Striping, and Mirroring:
article 106594- Mac OS X, Mac OS X Server: How to Use Apple-Supplied RAID Software
the UL3D card will allow me to set up my raid and achieve the fast speeds I am hoping for, but will I gain anything going with the newer cards like the UL4D? Because there is a huge cost difference, like $200.
I don't think you will notice the difference. Honestly, I don't think you will notice the difference between the UL2D and the UL4D. The drive read speed is still the bottleneck today, and making other parts of the system faster does not relieve that bottleneck. Otherwise, we would all be signing up for Fiber-Channel at up to 800 MBytes/sec per channel. And cables that cost about US$40 each.
Along the same lines, would having a card with two independent busses be better than one?
Yes. But you would probably not notice the difference, until you got a handful of drives reading and writing simultaneously. Only then would the transfers start to slow each other down a little.
... a bunch of SCSI cables in there with black boxes on the end of the cables, I'm guessing those are the terminators?
Probably so. SCSI terminators for this application are typically about 1+1/4 inches long and about 2 inches wide. If they are labeled, they should say "LVD" or "LVD/SE".
They're also very long so 8 inches isn't a problem.
Total length is not the issue, you are allowed up to 12 meters (about 36 feet) of cable. The issue is the unusual set-up on the floor of a G4 where the drives are side-by-side with all the connectors facing the same direction. The standard Apple cable used there looks like oragami (Japanese paper-folding). The cables are folded to go up toward the top front of each drive, then over to the next drive, then a double fold to turn the corner but still maintain the connector in the right orientation, then down to the drive connector, then back up and on to the next. You need more than 8 inches between connectors to do all this folding, or you will not be able to reach each drive with successive connectors.

  • Combo USB 2.0 + Gigabit Ethernet PCI Card?

I have been looking feverishly for a manufacturer that makes a Mac-compatible PCI Card that has both USB 2.0 and Gigabit Ethernet on the same card. So far I have not been able to find anything. I am wondering if anyone knows of one that will be compatible with a B&W Powermac with a gig of RAM and a Sonnet G4 500Mhz processor.
On a side note, I know this Mac has limitations pertaining to Hard Drive size and I am curious: If I have a slave drive enabled, is my total combined usable size the 128 limit or can I have 2 120 gig Hard drives? And what is the highest speed drive recommended for the B&W's slow bus?
Kind of a lot of questions... Thanks so much in advance!!!!
    -Kurt

I don't know of a Mac-compatible combo card like that. Because of the issues with USB 2.0 cards in Macs, you'll have better compatibility installing one that has an NEC controller chip. This stipulation would narrow the field of recommended combo cards even further, if there were any from which to choose. As for hard drive capacity, the 128 GB limitation applies to each drive - not the sum of two drives, configured as master and slave. If your B&W G3 has a Rev. 1 motherboard, the onboard IDE controller doesn't support master/slave configurations (see "New Features" Section 3 - "Revised IDE Controller Chip" on this page). Depending on the amount of money you wish to invest in your B&W, this Acard AEC-6280M ATA-133 controller card would enable you to take advantage of reasonably-priced, larger capacity drives. About six months ago, I bought a pair of sale-priced Seagate 120 GB drives for $59.99 USD each, when that capacity was being phased out by the retailer. Now, you can often find larger capacity drives for less than that. As for bus speed, an ATA-100 or ATA-133 drive is backward-compatible and will run on the slower, onboard IDE bus in the B&W. The spindle speed for most drives is 7200 RPM, which provides a slight improvement over the slower 5400 RPM drives.
