G5 PPC-Can't start up from any of three HD - Power supply just replaced

I had my power supply replaced and have only been able to boot from the hard drive once. I can boot from the CD however. I replaced the 3.6 volt AA battery, reset the pram. Even tried to start with the shift key down. Tried all three drives, now none will boot. First aid fails on each drive. The apple symbol comes up with the spinning, then shuts down, except when booting from the cd.

Not a likely conclusion yet.
Hold the Option/alt key down at bootup, do the HDs show as a boot choice, or just the Install Disc?
First aid fails on each drive.
If they haven't died, then You must repair the HD, if Disk Utility or fsck should fail to repair it, your best bet is DiskWarrior from Alsoft, you'll need the CD to boot from if you don't have another boot drive...

The only Apple option would be to erase the drive & try an install.

I have polkit installed but I can't start GParted from the XFCE menu. Do I need to edit any configuration files to make this work? The wiki isn't very clear about what to do after installing polkit. Thanks.

In my Xfce4 installation, it's /usr/share/applications/GParted, which I copied over to ~/.local/share/applications/, as kaixi suggested, and it appeared there as gparted.desktop. Right-click for Properties > Launcher > Command, and in that field (not wanting to install gksu) I put sudo gparted, which works, thanks.

HT1338 If I have OS 7.5 installed on an external drive, can I start up from the external drive in that OS when my macbook pro is 10.7?

If I have OS 10.6 installed on an external drive, can I start up from the external drive if I have 10.7 installed on my macbook pro?

Provided that the MBP supports booting from that version of 10.6, and the install was from a retail disk (not a different Mac model), then yes. If it's a newer Pro that came with Lion, it may not boot to 10.6.

Can't start up from Install disk

I'm using a MacBook purchased 3/07. System 10.4.11
I can't start up from the Install Disk for Leopard. I only get a screen with the apple logo and the spinning thing. I wait 10 minutes. Nothing happens. I've tried both using the Disk for the start up and clicking on Install icons but when it shuts down to restart....nothing.
Can anyone help me?

Hi Josef,
I left it on for over an hour and nothing happened. Finally called Apple and after an hour and a half of all kinds of testing, restarts, zapping and I don't know what else, the nice man there talked to his supervisor and then had me test the hardware (hold down D when starting). Turns out there is a problem with my ram so now I have to take it to a local technician and if he can't fix it, it'll have to go back to Apple for repairs. Ho hum. I just hope it finally gets working to make all this worthwhile.

I have found the correct error definition in english.

I have updated my bios to the latest version.
I have just tried to uninstall all USB-drivers, and reinstall them.. Still no luck

would love to...way over my head so far...upgraded to Yosemite 10.10.2 - I have another MAC (motorola chipset...maybe 10.6?) and 3 PCs on the network...the older MAC linked up through the network just fine...
I can see the Yosemite MAC on the PCs...I can open customer file folders (I am a printer) from the shared drive...I can drag files (let's just call them PDFs, they mostly are) to the MAC customer file...but if I try to open them from the PC I get an error message that says permission denied - or may be in use by another user. There are no other users. After I uploaded to Yosemite, I noticed most if not all drives and or folders had permissions changed to either no access or to read only...I've changed as many as I could find...drives, and folders...I can open those same files if I'm on the yosemite mac...Here's the catch, though...I was on a different floor and that PC can open a PDF on the Yosemite...but the RIP that prints our large format prints now won't print those files (whole RIP locks up) unless they are first dragged to the PC desktop...then all is fine. I thought it was MAC upgrade oriented, but I do have a PC that halfway works...I'm really stymied...

Can no longer boot from ANY OS disc on MBP

I recently purchased a 15" 2.16ghz Core Duo Macbook Pro. It came with the original 10.4.5 discs. The previous owner installed 10.6 on it using a retail disc, then upgraded to 10.6.6. I had planned on upgrading the original hard drive. However, I cannot get the laptop to boot from the original discs or my own retail 10.6 disc. I've tried a number of different approaches (booting from an external DVD, holding down "C", holding down "option", attempting to mount in on the desktop first, etc.). Either the machine hangs or it ejects the disc (when using the internal drive). Nothing seems to work. Both the internal drive and external drive have been tested and work fine. Is it possible that when upgrading to 10.6.6 a firmware upgrade was done that won't allow the machine to boot from a disc containing an earlier version? I don't know what else could be causing the issue. The laptop has not displayed any other issues. Thanks for any suggestions or explanations.

I don't know how much help I'll be to you. Seems to have a lot of posts lately about not being able to start up from the install disks.
I assume you can still boot up from the internal drive.
When you hold the option key to start, does the screen come up with the option to choose a startup disk and is your Install Disk in when you attempt this?
While booted up normally, does the Install Disk open up with the install OSX menu? If so, does going through the install menu reboot the computer from the CD automatically?
Even if there were a firmware upgrade, seems like you would be able to use the 10.6 Install Disk to boot from.

Can't Start up from Install CD/G3/8.5

I am trying to reinstall original sotfaware disks. But can't get it to start up w/original disk.
Don't we just simply start up, with CD in the drive, and hold down the "C" key?
Tried with both disks (Install, and Restore disks)...but still boots up to the normal HD and system there....not from the disk, do I can't do a clean install. Although, I have done this before. But not working now.
Suggestions?

By interpretation I take it that your machine is an iMac? If so, it should look something like this one -

There are so many different model Macs, each with their own peculiarities, that it is usually necessary to know exactly what is being discussed.
Assuming it is an iMac, here's some more questions -
• Does the CD drive work? For example, with the machine booted to its hard drive, when you insert the CD does its icon appear on the desktop?
• Do other startup keyboard commands work? For example, if you hold down the Shift key from the beginning of startup and keep it held down, does the machine boot with Extensions Off?
• Have you tried using Startup Disk control panel to set the CD as the boot volume? Will it let you make that selection?
• How long has it been since the internal battery was replaced? If it has been at least 4 years, or if the machine has been unplugged regularly or for an extended period, try replacing it.
• If you have any USB device(s) connnected (including a printer, modem, drive, or any device) other than the keyboard and mouse? If so, try disconnecting those.
• Have you tried using a different mouse, or no mouse? Note - the machine should be able to boot to a CD with the mouse disconnected, but you would not be able to do much with the CD without a mouse; however, doing so is one way to check to see if the mouse is causing the problem.

Can't start listener from OEM. It appears as Stopped although it is not.

I can't make the EM show the listener as running, it always shows it as stopped. I checked it with lsnrctl and it is running, but in EM appears as stopped. I refreshed the screen and nothing; I tried to start it from the EM, and it displays a message like "The listener has been correctly started", but when I check the status in EM it is still stopped. And when I check the details, it shows an error "Access denied", NET_ADMIN_ERROR,REMOTE_OP_ERROR,No such file or directory. I think I have the right credentials (I'm in the administrators group, and I have log on as batch job)
I would appreciate any help on this.

I can't see any excess protocols in the listener. As per some metalink entries - I've commented out the "SQLNET.AUTHENTICATION_SERVICES= (NTS)" line from the SQLNet file.
Still the same problem.
To be honest - all replies to postings for this error have not worked. I've contacted some guys with the same problem - and their resolution was to completely reinstall XP and then Oracle again. Just removing and reinstall Oracle was insufficient. So - i guess i'm going to have to follow suit.
Any last minute suggestions before this bit of drastic action?!

I can't get my MacBook to start up from the optical dis drive, It does not get recognised either when I start up and hold 'C' or when I select it under Start Up Disk in the System Preferences. Any suggestions? Thanx.

are u using the Efi password protection utility? youll have to bypass/disable/turn off that first. Its got a feature that will disable the startup keys
