G5 Quad Video Upgrade...

Greetings to all!
Here's my situation.
I've currently got a 23" Cinema display, and two 19" Viewsonic displays (left/center/right, basically).
My Quad has a 7800 card in it as CTO'd from the factory.
Eventually, I might upgrade to a 30" display, and still use one of the 19" units (the other going on a Mac Pro).
Regardless, I need another PCIe Graphics Card.
What's the best way to go about this? I'm completly aware that Apple doesn't offer seperate parts like this (although I'm sure the Part Number for a service replacement is in that service manual I've got) to your Average Joe/consumer.
I believe the Quad only has one PCIe Power header on the logic board (and is thus taken up by the 7800).
I'd like to get a good card- something that I can throw C4D, CS2, or Flash at and get nice results, but I certainly don't expect to play Quake 4 on the secondary (that's for the 7800 ).
Cheers!
SC

The options are:
1. Order the 7800GT when you buy the computer.
2. Buy a 7800GT from an Apple Authorized Service Provider such as WeLoveMacs.com, but, as a service part, it'll cost you more than twice what it would have in Option 1.
3. Purchase a PC 7800GT and pay someone at the StrangeDogs.com forums to flash it with Mac firmware.

2011 MacBook Pro, 64 bit i7 quad core, upgraded to Lion OSx, Bootcamp installed with Windows 7, wanting to install Windows 8 (don't ask), tried downloading/installing bootcamp 5.0.5033 (both on the mac/windows partitions (actually using a parallel to run Windows)), error message something similar to bootcamp doesn't support this Windows
So the question is am I doing something wrong? Should I just try and install windows 8 through my windows 7 partition and see if I can use the bootcamp 5.05033. Or do I solely have to use the bootcamp to install Windows 8? I'm not too familiar with bootcamp and how it runs.

if you're using parallels and full bootcamp then you're making it 100% more troublesome for youself then it needs to be
bootcamp is running windows directly on the hardware this give full memory and cpu and 3d video game power
running windows in parallels is running a virtual machine where one can't run powerful games and the like but one can have it in a window and change fast between osx and windows
parallels as the only virutal machine (as far as I know) support not have the operating system as a file on the osx harddisk but can access a bootcamp parition as virtual machine but without the benefits bootcamps provides
it's a service parallels provide for those who want both to play games in normal bootcamp and sometimes use windows in a virutal machine
just install it like a normal virtual machine and you need not worry about bootcamp drivers and the likes
plus it would mean that the windows part would be a part of the timemachine bacup of osx
which it is not when it's in bootcamp

  • Are you recommending a video upgrade 3/30/2014. seems suspicious

I am getting pop up notifications that Firefox needs a video upgrade. as I look at the URLs that the upgrade is coming from, it just doesnt look right. Then one page was arcade games that I could not avoid accepting. Is Firefox recommending this video upgrade? I cancelled the install. I am not having any problems at this time. As far as I know, I am running the latest version of Firefox on my new windows 8.1 laptop.

No, Firefox doesn't pop up such notifications. You can check if you have the latest drivers on your graphics card manufacturer's web site. Windows Update might also help.

You're not running the latest version of Firefox.

If you get the same notifications regardless of which sites you visit, your computer is probably infested with malware.

  • Qosmio G20, G25: video upgrade possible?

Does qosmio g-series allows for video upgrade?

As far as I know, notebooks in fact doesn't allow for grahic upgrade in early 2005. BUT...
MXM technology for mobile systems, which was invented by Nvidia not long time ago, allows for graphic upgrade, see:
    http://www.nvidia.com/page/mxm.html
    "Upgradeable Notebook Graphics
MXM, as a consistent notebook graphics interface, provides a design specification for upgradeable graphics in a notebook." In brochure attached it's claimed that this technology applies to GeForce 6 Go series.
Toshiba officials claimed in 2004 that no Sat, Sat Pro, Tecra, Portege has upgradeable graphics. But then no laptop uses GeForce6 graphics.
May be now they use MXM-based graphic chip.
Asking any Toshiba representative to clarify this question and next one: when 256Mb videocards will be integrated in Toshiba products.

A few questions I think the technical team can confirm and answer for me:
    1.   CPU soldered in or upradeable with aftermarket CPU purchase? This is Intel i7 4700
    2.  Is GPU upgradeable with aftermarket GPU?  This one is 470M
    3.  Possibility of installing an additional SSD (one to boot), and HDD for a performance/storage configuration (not mSSD).
-Use of drive caddy or something a long these lines e.g. where mSata, or DVD drives can both be swapped for a drive caddy.
    Thanks.

The CPU is not soldered in place but you are going to find that there is not a lot of improvement possible. That is a 4th gen i7 processor and even if you could get one a tick or 2 faster the price would be astronomical not to mention you would void the warranty. Not worth it.
No GPU upgrade is possible. The video is on a chip soldered to the board.
Yes, the laptop has a second hard drive bay and you can get an SSD (regular full sized) to put in the first bay to use as a boot drive. This will speed it up tremendously such that you will not want to upgrade the CPU any more.
Here is the caddy you need:

Hi guys, please someone could tell me if it's possible to upgrade the video for my DV7 4087cl laptop?
Currently it has an ATI Mobility HD 5000 Series and an Intel integrated... it's possible to choose wich one to use according to the need.

    Hi Fabio,
See Page 98 of your Maintenance & Service Guide for a list of compatible processors.
Sorry to say, but it's not really practical to change your video adapter - your existing Intel chip physically soldered to the Motherboard and as such, is not an upgradeable component.

  • HP a6303w available video upgrade?

I was wondering if there may be an available video card upgrade for my a6303w desktop.  The unit is still factory without any form of upgrades to it.  However, I do use it to play World of Warcraft and it has served well since purchasing it in February 2008.  With the new expansion coming out and hearing that there will be increased video required I am uncertain if the factory video will be able to support it and wanted to see if there was an available video card upgrade for the unit?  As it is now within the game my video settings are set to the absolute lowest and I experience lag often in high action environments.  Any help would be appreciated thanks.

PM, the computer has a PCI Express x16 slot.  This is the type of video card that you should purchase.  However, to use a video card that will fill your needs, it will most likely be necessary to upgrade the power supply unit (PSU), as well.  The PSU in the computer is only 250W.  Most newer mid-level video cards require at least 400W to operate properly.  I like OCZ and Corsair for PSU's.  They make reasonably priced enthusiast/gamer PSU's.  Also, I like XFX, BFG, EVGA, Sapphire and PNY video cards in that order.
If you would like recommendations, please let me know.

  • G5 Quad Graphics Upgrade

I am very concerned that I have had no response from Apple and none of the employees I talk to at either 1-800-MY-APPLE or at the retail store know the answer to how I can upgrade my Nvidia 6600 to The Nvidia 7800. My gawd Apple, you guys have it available for you built to order? What can someone from Apple say somthing with regards to this. I was an early adopter of the Quad. I somthing diffierent about my Quad and the made to order ones? It's very frustraiting for me to keep getting bounced around. Someone needs to get thier heads out of their *ss and announce somthing... The truth with set you free!!!
    Quad G5   Mac OS X (10.4.5)

    lxLr8,
I'm in the same position and running Aperture. I suspect and really hope Apple are working on this for us, it is a really dumb situation, someone shomehow got this wrong. Nvida has announced the transition of 7800 to 7900 card. I have no idea if Apple bought a bunch of 7800's to last a while before they stopped production or are qualifying the new 7900 for release who-knows-when. We just better not be in the same position 6 months from now.
For video cards to run on Apple, the apparently needs a unique boot image on the card and likley its own set of drivers in the OS. What this does is lock video offerings to Apple only. I don't mind this at all (heat, compatability OS hooks etc) IF they at least give us some choices to suit our needs. Grump over.

  • Quad video output problem @ 640x480

When I connect my new Quad to a TV with the DVI to Video adapter there are some glitchy looking artifacts at the very top of the display. Some pixels of random colors but most of them are just black. This only affects the top 30 pixels or so and only on the TV (not on my main screen). The problem only exists when displaying at 640x480 and with overscan on. The problem persists whether using s-vid or composite cable. I have the stock graphics card, the nVideo 6600. I'll post a picture of the glitch to this thread when I can get my hands on a digital camera.

  • Video upgrade on G3 AIO

I am asking this question purely hypothetically, because I have not come up with a reason that I would need to do so (yet?)...
Is it possible to upgrade the video card on a G3 AIO? I have not seen anywhere online that addresses this issue; so I am expecting a simple no. I have already installed a 4mb vram chip, and that is working fine; but if I wanted to go to a fancier card than the onboard ATI, would it be possible so that it would display on the built in monitor? Office space is limited enough as it is, and I dont really have room for another monitor.

it should work with not doing anyhting to it. i have herd that panther needs drivers installed to use the Radeon . i could be wrong. i have never used Panther. however i would boot into OS 9 first and open the display prefrences and select arange and select the identify startup screen inside those 2 little screens inside that window one is the onboard and the other is the the Radeon 7000.
by default your main screen which has the apple menu bar and startup screen is set to the onboard video. there is a little happy mac and a little apple menubar in one of those little screens. drag them to the other screen to make the Radeon 7000 the main screen. most games go by what monitor is selected as the main screen. you want to have the 7000 set as the start screen and the one that has the apple menu bar in it and reboot.
once that is done you should not have to do much more than to set xpostfacto to use the OF output screen to the ATY,Bluestar(CRT) and not the onboard ATY,Mach64 and select Use old NDRV's and you should be set to install and run panther with no problems.
your on board video might go out like it went to sleep and not come back on and lockup the system. if that happens you need to proform the fix in terminal in OS X and reboot and maybe need to update to 10.3.8 to get the video back working properly. once done you will have no more problems with the onboard video going out like that. that is if it does have that problem on your system. if it dont have that problem you dont need to do that fix.

  • Video Upgrade? Poor HD Playback

I would like to find out if anyone else has had success playing 1080P on a Mini; and if there is a way to upgrade the video performance.
+Machine Specs: The new 2.0GHz Intel Core 2 Duo mini with 2GB of ram. I should not that I am running video through Keynote to control user interaction.+
I read that the Mini could play 1080P but My experience thus far shows that the minis video card can't handle resolution higher then 720P (1280 x 720) or (1360 x 768)
In fact the video card seems to have issues delivering video to any screen resolution above 1360x768 but seems to decompress 1080P video at lower screen resolutions fine.
I think the the integrated video card just can't keep up.

im not a technical expert but i think if you look at the quicktime section of the apple web site it gives you the tech specs needed to play various resolutions. The spec you give which is the same as they mini i should be getting tommorow only meets the 720p spec for the memory needed by the graphics card 64 mb or something shared with RAM. 128 needed for 1080p would need an imac.

Well, I looked at your link (all of it!) and if everything still works on yours, all I can say is: job well done. It certainly wouldn't be for a "faint-at-heart" person or non-techie. Now, the question remains: why was I told by Apple techs that my old iMac (late 2006 24") was the only one with a replaceable card? Maybe the reason would be the fact that it is cumbersome at best to get to it? Or your (and my old) model are the only ones where it can be done - I'm sure that shall remain a mystery.
I fully agree, and wasn't really suggesting it as a DIY option, just that it is feasible. I wouldn't really like to speculate about other iMacs, but it wouldn't surprise me if more of them have removable graphics cards (excluding integrated graphics models). How long ago were you told yours was the only one? It may have been true at the time if it was a while ago?
