G5 Quad won't calibrate...& other issues

Wow, I've been through the ringer attempting the seemingly straightforward task of combining the working parts (which includes most of them) of two parts/repair G5 Quads into one working Quad. As a consultant and troubleshooter, I expect computers to respond consistently in most cases. I forgot I was working on a G5...
Okay, where to start...? Well, the main thing I'm tackling right now is the joyous Thermal Calibration task. Trying ASD 2.6.3 on 2 separate Quad chassis and logic boards (and 1 CPU module), I am unable to get through the Calibration procedure.
Some questions and observations:
1. Thermal Calibration will sometimes give me a fan-related error, but usually just dies and locks up the computer entirely. In this case, the Overtemp LED (#2) comes on, along w/ the Checkstop LED (#7).
2. Despite this, the computer will boot up and seems to run fine initially. But then w/o any significant CPU load or heating, the fans and pump will gradually increase (we're talking over 5-10 minutes) in speed until my G5 is ready to taxi down the runway and take to the skies.
3. CPU B Core 2 seems to be the most temperature sensitive, occasionally hitting 30-40F higher than the others, but it seems to bounce around somewhat. While the others are in the 105-115F range at idle, B2 jumps around from 120-155F.
4. Would another version of ASD be able to complete the Thermal Calibration? Apple Service Source shows 2.6.3 as the correct version for the Late 2005 G5s. Does anyone have experience w/ calibrating using another ASD version?
5. I have tried so many combinations of CPU cards, number of CPUs, chassis/logic board, etc, that I am now at a loss. When I think I have it figured out, one combination seems like it should work and is working, something screwball will happen like the fans ramping up or a random lockup. I'm tempted to toss all of this out in the street. I like a challenge and project, but when it doesn't behave consistently, I start lamenting my time wasted w/o the satisfaction of hard-earned success.
6. Here is what my component testing has shown and how I've combined parts:
Quad #1: 2-pump LCS w/ the lower LCS loop failed
-lower CPU card possibly compromised from this, although it seemed to work fine in a single-card arrangement
-logic board, power supply, and upper CPU card tested fine
Quad #2: 1-pump LCS w/ bad upper CPU card
-logic board, PS, and lower CPU card tested fine
So I have made 1 supposedly functional CPU module using Quad #1's upper CPU card and Quad #2's lower CPU card and 1-pump LCS. I have tried this Frankensteined CPU module in both Quad chassis/MLB combinations, w/ similar results. Main difference I have noticed is that Quad #1 doesn't like Quad #2's LCS, causing the pump to run (or think it is running) at 3600RPM and error out on ASD pump testing.
Sorry for the novel, but I'd appreciate any thoughts, answers or comments to help restore my sanity. I had thought that a "last, greatest Power Mac" would be a cool system to have, but now I'm wondering if I shouldn't have just saved my time and dropped a bunch more money on a Mac Pro instead.
Thanks,
Fred
P.S. Sheesh...as I typed this, naturally the Quad snickered behind me and proceeded to idle along happily for 30 minutes, then properly put itself to sleep...and properly wake as well. WTH??

What leads you to believe you have two good logic boards?
Heheh....an excellent question indeed! At this point, I'm not too sure of anything anymore... But seriously, to answer your question, a few things make me think the logic boards might be ok:
1. The machines have come up and run w/o failure, overtemp, etc, with only 1 CPU card installed (making them essentially dual 2.5s). In fact, last night I ran a Compressor batch as a test w/ one of the "half Quad" configs serving as the cluster controller and processor, and it ran w/ maxed out CPU activity for about 26 minutes straight. This was after running for a couple of hours playing iTunes and surfing the Web. Temps on the installed CPU's 2 cores never reached above 150F while I was observing, and fan speeds did not ramp up into the stratosphere as before w/ both CPU cards.
2. I figure that, unless I purchased these machines from really nefarious people (and I don't think I did) who combined more than 1 failed item into a Quad chassis in order to get rid of it, the odds of having both a failed LCS or CPU and a failed MLB are very small (in the absence of corrosive residue, I'm assuming an LCS failure didn't cause an MLB failure). Since I've determined that one Quad has a failed LCS leading to overtemp, and the other a bad CPU card, I feel I most likely have proper logic boards.
3. I haven't yet been able to produce a logic board failure during ASD testing.
That last one is less significant to me, as I've seen RAM and CPU failures that were not caught by ASD. But all 3 of those items together make me think there's a high likelihood that my logic boards are good (although failing to get through thermal calibration may be a sign to the contrary, but they run okay). Not a guarantee, of course...
For documentation's sake, last night in Quad #2 (which I've been working from for the last bit), I pulled the CPU module, then removed Quad #1's CPU1 card from the lower location, replacing Quad #2's CPU2 card in the upper location in the process. This left the lower location empty, and halved the Quad to a Dual 2.5. When I did this I started over w/ thermal paste, removing all of what was there and applying new (I had not completely removed the existing before). As I said above this has worked well even doing a Compressor batch. My next step is to reinstall a lower CPU card, also after full thermal paste cleanup.
Thanks for reading and your thoughts. I welcome any additional suggestions and ideas.

  • Clean Reinstall then Quad won't complete its Boot-Up

    First I had problems with the Mac not recognising my Sony Video Camera.
    I'm familiar with the Quicktime 7 issue, so I did all the QuickTime receipts/QT Fresh Install stuff. Still recognition of the camera was erratic and then seemed to be getting worse.
    Next, my new (Feb 28 2006) G-Tech G-Raid 1tb went off the road - erratic recognition and VERY slow (if any) folder navigation - then ceased altogether.
    Worse, the Quad suddenly started hanging and throwing up text:
    (These are some of the more interesting bits).
    System Failure: CPU=1
    Code: 015B0930
    Unknown Failure Code
    Latest Crash Info for CPU1
    Exception State SV-0x000000000 (I think).
    Backtrace terminated - unaligned frame address: 0X48041EE9
    Memory access Exception (1,0,0)
    Waiting for remote (something) debugger connection.
    (Fans were at full tilt).
    Well, I did two hardware tests (at over 4 hours apiece) and nothing showed, so I erased and reinstalled.
    I couldn't get the DVD drawer open, so I firewired to my G5 Dual and targetted the Quad.
    This made seemed to help but the Quad still wasn't stable, so I did a fresh reinstall again by using the OS X Install Disk.
    I ditched all but the basic install option.
    Now the Quad won't finish Booting Up.
    It gets to the end of the progress monitor (candy bar) thingy and then just hangs.
    It'll boot from my LaCie 500 GB HD though - and seems to run OK from that.
    What are my chances?
    Andy
    G5 Quad. 8 GB. 250 & 500 GB Int'l Drives. G-Tech G-Raid 1 TB. FCP 5.0.4 (Studio)   Mac OS X (10.4.6)   Sony HVR-Z1E. (Please forgive me if I misread your question).
    I should add that after the first reinstall of OS X, I updated to 10.4.6 but after the second I didn't update.
    ALSO (if it makes a difference) on both occasions, I reinstated my old library files.
    I've done sporadic zapping of PRAMS and repairing of permissions along the way too.
    I guess I'll do another clean reinstall without reinstating my library files - but without all those settings, I may well lose the will to live.

    your welcome,
    If you keep a clone of your pristine boot drive on a external drive, kept disconnected and in a safe place. Then if something like this happens you can disconnect the boot drive and option boot from the clone to isolate if it's a hardware or software problem right off.
    Then you have the option with the clone to repair/recover or simply erase the original and reverse clone if it is indeed a screwed up boot drive.
    (actually it's best to have two clones, each staggered a bit in time/updates just in case you hook up a clone to a infected machine and it too gets owned)
    Cloning can only take minutes, and you can out to lunch while the clone is going on. Sure beats trying to find out what's exactly the problem.
    Visit the free Carbon Copy Cloner forums for details. Search Apple for DejaVu which is a System Preference pane which combines auto-cloning and auto-backup. Clone once a week and backup daily for instance.
    Always Erase w/Zero option all new drives, it checks every bit on the drive and maps off those bad sectors which is a cause of a lot of unusual behaviors.

  • RV042G Log Email and other issues

    The RV042G manual said to use this site for support so here goes.  After owning and operating the RV082 for many years, I recently upgraded to the RV042G V01.  Overall the RV042G hardware appears to function pretty good.  The RV042G has faster throughput, but it is slightly slower in command/control response and boot than the RV082.  I have now owned the RV042G about two days and have found a number of issues.  Specifically, emailing logs doesn't work.
    - Emailing logs does not work.  RV042G does not appear to handle any type of connection authentication, it does not have a place for the senders user name or password.  I have tried SMTP servers that require no authentication and ones that do, none of them work.  RV082 worked fine with the Time Warner Cable (TWC) SMTP server, RV042G does not.  Additionally, there is NO output in the logs to show a failure.  So TWO bugs here.  I have checked settings to ensure no blocking rules, have rebooted, and even did a factory default with no luck and absolutely no mention in the logs anywhere of failure to send.
    Email is my primary issue, any suggestions on getting this working would be appreciated.  I've also identified a number of other issues as well and included them here to avoid multiple posts.  These are:
    - Port 0 apparently responds to interrogation and shows CLOSED (not STEALTH per grc.com).  This was NOT the case for the RV082 and is a potential security vulnerability as it cannot be redirected.
    - Port 1 is CLOSED and apparently responds to interrogation.  This was NOT the case for the RV082.  Normally I would be good on the RV082.  I could redirect any OPEN or CLOSED ports to the bit bucket (192.168.1.254 for instance).  BUT, the RV042G Port Forwarding is NOT sending things to the bit bucket and instead decides to OVERRIDE the forwarding and respond to queries.  So there are TWO bugs here.  This is a potential security vulnerability.
    - The ALL Logs tab shows nothing, but sub tabs do until AFTER you hit the clear button, then it works as expected. This happens every time you open the logs.  Another poster identified this problem so this is confirmation of that issue.  Also, once the dialog box for the log has closed, it will not open again until leaving the page and returning.
    - Authentication failures will show up in the System Log but not in the Access Log?
    - HTTPS html interface works fine in Firefox.  However, turn it off and use just HTTP and there is a problem.  Can't see the forms and buttons, can only see the background image.  This isn't as much of a problem as I can just use HTTPS, however, with the RV082 when HTTPS was activated it would open the remote management portal regardless of whether the button was clicked or not. So really a non-issue but a bug none the less.
    - RV082 could send 500 log events, RV042 can only send 100. Again, not a bug but a reduction in capability over the older RV082.
    One last thing, your hardware version control numbers and firmware download page are confusing for the RV042G V01.  Found this when I checked if there was a newer version of the firmware than what the RV042G shipped with.  Here is what the firmware update page shows:
      "Cisco RV042G Dual Gigabit WAN VPN Router"
         "Firmware Release 4.2.1.02 - RV042, RV082, RV016 firmware 4.2.1.02-tm (V3 hardware required)".
    The problem is that you reset the hardware version in the RV042G (V01).  Just seems probable that someone will download the firmware for the RV042 V01 and try to put it on the RV042G V01.
    I like the RV042G overall and will wait for updates for these issues (email logs would be nice sooner rather than later as this is an advertised feature).  The RV082 was a great router for a long time ONCE most of the bugs were fixed, hoping the RV042G will be the same.

    Guess I spoke too soon.  If Remote Management = Disable and HTTPS = Enable, it will OPEN external access to port 443.  So have to use an access rule to kill it off.  Can STEALTH Port 1 as well with an access rule but have to block all traffic there.  Cannot block Port 0 (make it STEALTH) with an access rule and this needs to be fixed in firmware.
    So port forwarding does work but not when sent to the bit bucket, have to use an Access Rule instead.  (You can see this by doing the following: turn off HTTPS and remote management and look at port 443 from the outside of the firewall.  No response at all.  Now enable HTTPS and keep Remote Management disabled and forward port 443 to an unused internal IP address.  The port still shows up as OPEN but won't connect.  Again, the RV082 did not exhibit this behavoir and would simply not provide any response to an external query if forwarded to an unused internal IP address.)
    For clarity, I have the RV042G V01 with Firmware Version :   v4.2.1.02 (Jan 18 2012 14:10:55).

  • All my photos in the iphoto have disappeared, not sure if this related to any iphoto upgrade or other issue, tried to find the photos through the finder (JPG or photo) but failed, can you help me to get back my photos please?

    All my photos in the iphoto have disappeared, not sure if this related to any iphoto upgrade or other issue, tried to find the photos through the finder (JPG or photo) but failed, can you help me to get back my photos please?

    Help us to help you: There are 9 different versions of iPhoto and they run on seven different versions of the Operating System. The tricks and tips for dealing with issues vary from version to version and OS to OS. So before anyone can help, they need information to work with. Basic stuff:
    - What version of iPhoto.
    - What version of the Operating System.
    - Details. What were you doing when the problem arose?
    - Did it ever work properly?
    - Are there error messages?
    - What steps have you tried already to solve the issue.
    Anything else you can think of that might allow someone else to understand your issue.
    With this kind of information somebody can develop a starting point for troubleshooting the issue.
    Posts that consist of "iPhoto doesn't work. Help" or "iPhoto won't print" or "Suddenly I have no photos!!!!!!!!!!" mean that any helper is simply guessing. More information means you get better assistance. (And no, more exclamation marks do not get help faster or make your issue seem urgent. They just make it seem like you have a stuck key )

  • IPhone 6 won't charge & Rotation Issues

    Hi Everyone
    (let me start by saying im sorry for spelling/grammatical errors you encounter I am angrily typing this)
    Brand new iPhone 6 probably 2 weeks old and it won't charge and when I can get it to charge battery drains to about 30% within maybe 4 hours...
    So heres the first weird thing, the phone battery dies in about 4 hours *yay* and by dies I mean takes me down to say 31% at which things will start to crash so I cannot use them until the phone is charging/ charged..
    then I have to have the phone plugged in to use it, and it slowly charges as I am using it (fair enough whatever) but the thing is it takes about 7 hours to fully charge and then the battery dies in about 4 so I dont understand what is going on
    -sorry if im not explaining this well-
    other issues sometimes the phone won't charge, I plug in the charger it vibrates and shows the charging signal and then straight away will vibrate again as if I have unplugged the phone at first it was doing this every minute or so and now it does it every 1 second vibrate charging vibrate not charging - assumed it was the charging cable unfortunately I have tested it with 4 cables and all have similar issues...  - I have noticed it does the instant in and out in and out continuous loop charging thing when plugged into a computer but when plugged into the wall charger it does it every 20 or 30 seconds..
    This phone is brand new I dont understand the issue??
    I also have the issue - might be a rotation issue might be an IOS update issue but when I am watching youtube or a video it will randomly swift back to horizontal rather than landscape and then switch back even when the phone hasn't been moved, I tested this last night by placing the phone down flat on a table top and it still continued to have this, happens maybe once a minute?
    I am so frustrated as there are other little errors that I cant even be bother to go into right now
    thanks team

    HI Brian
    thanks for your input I have tried everything and its not the charger as I have tried it on two different chargers and my laptop...
    it seems to be charging okay at night time so will see how that goes
    thanks again

  • RealVNC with Quad Core Mac Mini "Refresh Issues"

    Upgraded my Mac Mini server from a dual core to Quad Core machine.  Headless machine, hence used RealVNC to administrator it.  So when I utilised RealVNC, connecting via an ipad and the quad core machine had "Refresh Issues"!!  Went back to the Dual Core machine and you can view everything in real-time!  Can't explain it and the RealVNC people can't understand it either, yet!!!???

    It has a wired ethernet connection, the wireless is on but more for "location" services.  And no USB 2.0 or 3.0 devices attached, in fact it's headless, and only the power and ethernet connection attached.  But interesting to learn of the wireless issues on the new mini's.  Thanks!

  • Old 21" CRT won't calibrate

    Hey all, I have an old 21" CRT, my son did something to it and now it's got a very 'saturated' look to it and it won't calibrate any more. Could this be age, or is there something that I can do that I haven't tried yet?
    Thanks

    Found out the trouble, the dvi adapter that connects the old monitor connection to the newer g5 has a problem, just moving it a bit fixed it. Still blurry though.

    So, my first question is obvious, what's wrong with my system?, am I missing some BIOS setting?, I believe APIC may have something to do, but this isn't the case because it is enabled (at least it says so in BIOS). I have the latest BIOS for this mobo (5.40)
    The second issue is something strange that Sisoft Sandra keep telling me: "SMBIOS/DMI information may be inaccurate", an here's what the help says:
    =================================
    Notice N224 - SMBIOS/DMI information may be inaccurate. This information is reported verbatim and cannot be checked by Sandra. While brand-name companies set this information most generic manufacturers use generic data that is meaningless. This issue generates more technical support queries than all other issues combined.
    Fix: If the information is not correct, check for a BIOS update (clear DMI pool) or fix any errors using the DMICFG tool provided with the board. Alternatively, disable Sandra’s DMI/SMBIOS reporting from module Options.
    =================================
    Is this "normal"???
    Anyway, I hope any of you to be able to help me.
    Thanks in advice,
    Fernando

    Although I am unsure as to what is exactly your problem, but from what I see everything seems ok
    Regarding the Sisoft Sandra remarks, don't worry about it.
    Regarding the Computer in Device Manager
    Try changing it to
    Advanced Configuration and Power Interface (ACPI) PC
    This has not given me any problems at all.
    Here is my system example

  • MacBook Pro 13" Unibody "Warped" or "Twisted" + Other Issues

    Hello everyone,
    Over the past year or so I've saved my pennies and I bought a 13" MacBook Pro Unibody last year (November/December ish, I'll need to check). Since then I've had numerous problems with it, software and hardware, that make me regret the purchase.
    Most recently I've noticed that the case is not straight or level. When the computer is sitting on a desk I can "wobble" it between the top left and button right corners. I've noticed this not only at home but at the library and school as well, so it's not the surface. After a bit of searching I see that numerous other people have had this issue with all MacBook Pro models, not just the 13". Does Apple really have this bad of quality and quality control?
    I'm contemplating bringing it back to the Apple Store, but (and here's the "other issues" part of it) I'm already a frequent visitor to the Genius Bar! I've been there numerous times to get the lid readjusted and tightened, and only couple weeks ago I was there again to get a broken key put back on! While Apple's support is top notch, I can't believe I paid over $1,000 for a computer who's quality is superseded by much cheaper computers from Dell and HP.
    What should my next move be? If I bring it in to the Apple Store's Genius Bar again, what options will I have for repair? Will I be given a completely new model or a refurbished model? In the latter case, will I be able to return the computer for a complete refund so I can take my money elsewhere?

    Bring it to the Apple store. You are under warranty. They will explain your options.

  • Twist charm swipes not working and other issues

    Hi all,
    I just got a new Twist a few days ago and am having some issues with it.  I got it on line from Staples who have a very limited return policy so I need to get these problems resolved quickly or will have to return it in a few days.  I really like it a lot and would hate to return it and deal with the replacement, double charge on my CC until they get the defective Twist and refund the bucks,  not to mention the shipping hassles.
    I've installed all updates including the Lenovo updates, updated the Bios, did a factory refresh and went through the update process all over again and also calibrated the screen.
    So the problems I'm seeing are the swipes from top to close an app, left to view open apps, and right for the charms will intermittently stop working but you can still tap on apps to open them and slide the app screen left \ right.
    The other issue is that occasionally the app screen will shrink and expand or open an app without being touched, I would have it on a stand in tablet mode and watch it expand \ contract, and suddenly bring up an app like Remote Desktop. I contacted Lenovo support they said it was a hardware issue and recommended returning it but I'm reluctant to do this and hope there's a solution for it.
    I did notice was that moving to portrait mode would usually work to bring back the swipe functionality.  Digging into it a bit more, I think I found the root cause, when it is in tablet mode with the keyboard folded back, the keyboard isn’t getting fully disabled, watching it closely I noticed that a cursor would sometimes appear \ disappear momentarily.
    Any thoughts or advice would be GREATLY appreciated!!

    okay, let's make really sure it is the entire iTunes folder. a typical one looks like this on the inside
    the red arrow points to the heart of your iTunes library - the iTunes library file, the iTunes database. you will want to treat this file as the apple of your eye !
    anyhoo, if indeed the entire iTunes folder is on the external, simply drag it from there to <MacintoshHD>/users/<yourname>/music on the new Mac.
    since a folder by the same name is already in that location, the finder will tell you so and ask you if you want to "replace it with the one you're moving". confirm that you want that.
    when the copying has finished, fire up iTunes and you should be taken to the exact same library you were used to from your old Mac.
    finally, go iTunes > preferences > advanced and check that +iTunes media folder location+ is set correctly - it should point to the iTunes folder on your new Mac's startup disk. if it doesn't, change it accordingly.
    please post back with results !

  • HP Spectre x360 13-4002dx active pen and other issues

    Hi, I'm havng issues with my active pen, but wasn't sure if it's an issue with my laptop or stylus (or if it's a software/driver issue). Is there an easy way to tell?Also, I've been using my laptop for a month now, and recently have had other issues, listed below. I wrote them down below in case that could provide some information, and/or if those issues are something I should be concerned about and should try to fix. To begin with, after doing some research, I bought a Synaptic active stylus (the Dell one), which worked very well for the first two weeks until last week. All of a sudden, it started to respond very awkward and randomly, sometimes it's too sensitive and draw lines even when the pen was off the screen, and sometimes it didn't draw anything at all even though I see the small circle following my pen tip. I initially thought it was due to low battery, but it's the same issue after I replaced the battery. Right now, the laptop doesn't respond to pen touching the screen (no clicks, no writings), although the pointer follows the pen. Any ideas on how to resolve this issue? How do I know if it's the pen that is faulty or if it's the laptop? Other issues I had or am having:1. Today, I had a BAD_POOL_HEADER error and blue screen of death. After reboot, everything seems to still work, but the login is now much slower. It's very fast to reach to the login screen, but it takes 2-3 minutes to bring up the desktop and other startup applications after I enter my password (I think it used to take less than 10 seconds). I tried rebooting 2-3 times, and it was always the same. 2. The laptop seems to gain heat very easily. With moderate workload (example, some websites with flash advertisements or videos), it can easily go above 70 degrees Celsius on either core (according to CPUID HWMonitor). One time, the system actually failed and forced hibernated due to overheating. (To me, the screen went blank all of a sudden. I turn the laptop back on, and the screen printed a message for a while saying it forced shutdown due to overheating. I realized it was hibernation after I logged in since I see all my windows) 3. On the second day of use of this laptop, the laptop just shutdown for no good reason, and then couldn't boot, saying it cannot find boot image or something like that. I looked up the web and found that it could be a BIOS issue. It said to try reseting the BIOS setting, and then it worked. I also upgraded the BIOS image to the latest after this incident. 4. This is probably more a router issue, but I initially had problems connecting wireless to my router. It was solved after changing my router. For those who are interested, the details is as the following: my old router supported up to 802.11n , but not 802.11ac, That shouldn't matter, but all wireless connections get disconnected once in every several hours if my HP Spectre x360 is trying to use the wireless. However the wired connections stayed ok when this happens, so the router is only "partially" killed. The fact that all wireless connections are getting killed seemed to me that the router didn't like something from my HP laptop. To be fair, I didn't try not using my HP laptop to see if the issue goes away, so it could be  a coincidence that the router started to go faulty at the same time I bought and used my HP laptop. Anyways, it seemed it's a router issue, so after replacing the router. the issue went away. Thanks.

    Will investigate and let you know what I can find out.

    THE use of the apple support is a mess also.
    I want to be able to use my MAC fully and easily like I used to with Snow Leopard.
    What is wrong with this maverick OS?

    The only people who can possibly assist you with this is Apple Customer Relations, call your local Apple contact number and ask for Customer Relations then explain your situation clearly and politely (be firm but don't rant).
    You might want to investiage what the local laws are regarding defective goods and 'fit for use' definitions on warranties etc. Consumer Protection can be a useful tool to use or bargain with if needed ...

  • LaunchDaemon canceling restart + other issues

    I have an app I want to always run so I created a LaunchDaemon to keep it going:
    <plist version="1.0">
    <dict>
    <key>Label</key>
    <string>com.sns.sentinel.air</string>
    <key>KeepAlive</key>
    <true/>
    <key>ProgramArguments</key>
    <array>
    <string>sh</string>
    <string>/Applications/oc4j/restartSentinel.sh</string>
    </array>
    <key>RunAtLoad</key>
    <true/>
    </dict>
    </plist>
    And restartSentinel.sh is very simple:
    echo Process Sentinel.app is being restarted...
    open -W /Applications/oc4j/j2ee/home/applications/Sentinel/Sentinel.app;
    That's an adobe AIR application which does not launch a window but does show up in the dock. I tried to avoid that by setting it's Info.plist file with LSBackgroundOnly = true and LSUIElement = false but that didn't seem to work.
    I also have another app running with almost the same format in its plist file only it calls a script which launches a jar file (which is an instance of an oc4j java server).
    Everything seems to be fine but the AIR app seems to terminate on a reboot. The jar file runs fine, however. So I have another daemon which loads the AIR app a few minutes after a reboot and then the daemon runs fine. So that's the first problem.
    Also, I have to access this machine via screen sharing. When I log in, the AIR app gets shut down and and then restarted by launchd. And that's the other issue. Even worse however is when another user logs in with screen sharing. The Sentinel.app daemon gets shut down and does not restart at all until I log in again.
    The final issue occurs when you try to end your screen sharing session (via log out or restarting the machine). Launchd seems to cancel the restart/logout. Usually the message says that it's the java jar process that is cancelling logout. This one is the most severe of all the problems.
    So how can I get launchd to let people use screen sharing without killing the app and how can I get it to stop canceling logot/restart?

    It is possible that there is a problem with the file(s) that store the extensions registry.
    Delete the files extensions.* (e.g. extensions.sqlite, extensions.ini, extensions.cache) and compatibility.ini in the Firefox profile folder to reset the extensions registry.
    *https://support.mozilla.org/kb/Profiles
    New files will be created when required.
    See "Corrupt extension files":
    *http://kb.mozillazine.org/Unable_to_install_themes_or_extensions
    *https://support.mozilla.org/kb/Unable+to+install+add-ons
    If you see disabled, not compatible, extensions in "Tools > Add-ons > Extensions" then click the Tools button at the left side of the Search Bar (or click the "Find Updates" button in older Firefox versions) to check if there is a compatibility update available.
    If this hasn't helped then also try to delete the addons.sqlite file.
    You can use this button to go to the Firefox profile folder:

  • Printing in OsX 10.6.x and other issues

    I just updated from a trusty G5 running OSX 10.4.11 to a 2010 Intel iMac running OSX 10.6.8 and can't for the life of me get my Epson 3800 and 595 printers to work. I've downloaded new drivers and also resorted to a clean install but no luck. The other issue is that when I run permission repairs in Disk Utility I get extensive repairs only to have the same thing happen again the next time I run the utility. Suggestions please!

    Thanks for the permissions info. It' a bit disconcerting that in Snow Leopard the Disk Utility just seems to continue repairing things that were supposedly fixed the last time I ran it. In Tiger a second go with Disk Utility would usually come up clean.
    Still having printing problems. Software update supposedly installed new drivers but neither the Epson 595 or 3800 will print. The error message in the driver window is:
    Error:/System/Library/Printers/Libraries/PrintJobMgr/Contents/MacOS/PrintJobMana ger failed
    Not sure, but it sounds like something in the OS dropped the ball.
    Any input appreciated.
