G5 shares not showing in Win 7

I have a G5 PPC, a MBP and a PC on a home network. The MBP has Win 7 installed on a Bootcamp partition. The PPC has an additional HD installed with 4 partitions. I can access the Win 7 partition from all the Macs and can access the MBP partition from the Win 7 partition. However, I cannot access all the folders on the G5. I can access a few of the folders but not all.
Any ideas what the problem could be? If i was unable to access any of the G% folders, I would suspect that the Network or Sharing Prefs were not set properly. But as some of the folders are available this seems not to be the case. The folders have not been excluded in the Sharing Prefs.

no, it should not be necessary. Well that is to say, you have circumvented some of the built in security \[I think for I don't really follow exactly what you did\] The proper way would be to add a user as if they were to log into the mac \[create a user account on the mac\]. Then given that user access to the resources you wish. Then log to the mac via Winblows7 as that user - not as the windows user. Subtle difference. Now if you are on a domain controller/AD, or LDAP... that is different. But suffice it to say... if you allow everyone access to "/" -then you really have allowed EVERYONE access to your whole world... very much like sharing "C:\"
I know I am vague here but getting into OS level security on what is a UNIX machine can be quite complex. Sorry for the ambiguity - I know I don't like it when people do that on these post.... but it really can't be avoided here/now.

  • Windows SMB shares not showing in finder

    hi,
i'm using 10.5.8 on a powermac G5 in the office and recently experienced some difficulties regarding SMB shares. there are two Win XP 32bit machines in the office network, one Win 7 64bit machine and the powermac.
    1) usually, the powermac could see and access all three windows machines via finder's sidebar. that stoped working some weeks ago. none of the three PCs shows up in the sidebar now. when i use finder's "connect to server" feature, the connection is established without problems. network printing to one of the XP machines also works fine. the mac's firewall settings where set to “Set access for specific services and applications” all the time, showing AFP and SMB shares enabled. just out of curiosity, i deactivated the firewall… and voila: my three PCs showed up in the finder sidebar again. changed it back… no PCs there
what's that? why did it work before, with the firewall enabled, and all of a sudden it doesn't work anymore and i have to shut down the firewall, to see my windows shares?
    2) for some time it was sufficient that i could access the windows shares from my mac. now my colleagues needed to access the mac from their windows machines. as they do not need to have access to my entire home folder, i added the relevant (sub)folder from my documents folder via SMB guest sharing, setting the access rights to "read&write" for everyone, so that no password was needed for guests accessing that folder. however, all three windows machines could only see the standard public folder with its drop box, but not the newly added folder. experimented for over an hour or so, changing settings, trying to add other folders… until i found out, that the folder will only show up on the windows network, when it's located on the top level of my home folder, but not, if it's located in a subfolder (i.e. in documents, music, etc.)
is this meant to be that way? or am i doing something wrong?

If this is still driving you crazy...
I had the same problem and by figuring out which machine was the Master Browser I managed to fix it. I have a Windows 7 system and it had taken over as the Master Browser (probably because I had to rebuild my Mac). I disabled the Computer Browser service on the W7 computer and a 2003 server in my network automatically took over as the Master Browser. All of the Windows machines immediately appeared under Shared Items on my Mac sidebar.
    I followed the instructions from:
    http://robmulally.blogspot.com/2009/03/macbook-master-browser-and-my-mate.html
    - on how to figure out which machine is the Master Browser in the network. The link came from a different discussion on the same issue (https://discussions.apple.com/thread/1877116?start=0&tstart=0). There are also instructions (although somewhat vague) on how to make your Mac the Master Browser.
I hope this is of some help.

  • Vista Share NOT showing up in OS X 10.5

    Okay here is the deal,
I can view my Mac share just fine on the Vista machine, but the vista share does not show up on my mac machine in Finder.
    What's up?
I can access the Vista share by typing: smb://192.168.1.106. Things work fine that way... But I want it to show up automatically.
Both my mac are in the same workgroup if that makes a difference. Also running Vista Ultimate on the PC and 10.5.2 on the Mac.
Kinda puzzling since XP shares showed up fine in 10.5, and I had a hard time getting Mac shares to show up in XP.

    Called Applecare,
My issue went all the way up to an "Apple Engineer."
They told me 10.5 does not actively search for SMB shares.
I say "That is impossible because XP is automatically listed in the Finder sidebar anytime a computer is available."
I get an 'over the phone shrug' and that was the end of the call.
Can some network genius out there help me?!?

  • Network shares not showing up in finder osx Lion

The shares on my network are not showing after I tried this SMBup. I tried to follow this guide but things didn't turn up as I was expecting them to work.http://knowledgebase.hsti.com/re-installing-smb-on-mac-os-x-lion-10-7-x
This is the official website where in the middle of the page there is a note stating that "SMBUp installs Samba, which in turn replaces Apple’s OS X’s native netbios and SMB services. This means that while connecting to servers from the Finder remains functional, the Finder won’t be able to “browse” network services and servers from the network won’t show up in the Finder’s sidebar. Be advised."http://eduo.info/apps/smbup
So i uninstall the samba restart the machine and now my shares don't show in the left side pane of finder. How can I get them back. Is the netbios service disabled

Open Terminal and issue the following command
    ps aux | grep netbios[d]
if you get a line similar to this
    _netbios          45   0,0  0,0  2477156   2456   ??  SNs   9:14am   0:02.44 /usr/sbin/netbiosd
then the daemon is running, otherwise issue the following command to start netbiosd permanently
    sudo launchctl load -w /System/Library/LaunchDaemons/com.apple.netbiosd.plist

  • Windows Shares Not Showing Up In Finder (Master Browser Problem)

Hi, on leopard I had no problems with Windows shares showing up in finder. However, having upgraded to Snow Leopard, I've now lost that ability.
Before I had my Leopard computer set as the master browser. I did this by specifying domain master = yes and preferred master = yes in my smb.conf. However despite importing these settings into Snow Leopard's smb.conf, it is not acting as a master browser.
When I run the command "nmblookup -M -- -" which in Leopard returned my Mac as the master browser, now it says "failed to find name _MSBROWSE_#01".
I'm sure this is why the Windows PC is not showing up in finder, but I don't know why the smb-conf isn't taking effect in Snow Leopard, and setting it as the master browser?
Also, I can use Go -> Connect to access my Windows shares, and Mac shares show up in Vista okay.
    Any help appreciated.

Problem fixed upon updating to 10.6.2.

  • AFP shares not showing in Sidebar

I am having problems getting afp shares to show in the Shared section of the Sidebar. The Sidebar is showing two of the SMB shares but nothing else. All of the AFP shares show on the other two Leopard computers. I have tried the following:
    1. Turned Bonjour computers on and off in Finder Preferences.
    2. Use DiscWarrior to clean the disc and have repaired permissions several times.
    3. Tried deleting the com.apple.network.identification.pist file.
    Any other ideas?
    Thanks for any help.
    Peter

I have this problem from time to time. To get them to show, in the Finder I go to Go > Connect to Server > then click on Browse. The will not show them in the left sidebar, but will show under the Network. I know it does not solve the problem. I'd like to know a fix as well.

  • Home share not showing up in iTunes

When I try to set up "home sharing" in iTunes Advanced tab on the menu bar the "share" header shows up as it is supposed to.  When I press "done" to complete the step the "share" header disapears.  Therefore not allowing me to use home share as it is intended.
    Has anyone seen this before.

I discovered 2 things about home sharing.
    1)  File sharing on the Mac must be turned on for this to work properly.  System Prefs -> Sharing -> File Sharing
    2)  If you are not actively sharing iTunes with another computer - the Share header in iTunes is not visible.  When a computer actively connects with your iTunes to share, the Share header will show up along with details of the shared connection.
    I hope this helps someone.

  • SMB share not showing all available files

    Hi,
At work I have to connect to several SMB shares. Most are fine, however 1 of them does not show all the files that are on that share. I know I'm using the right domain, username and password. I've checked the console and can see this message repeated when I connect.
    mbgetmem(449): incomplete copy
    mbgetmem(449): incomplete copy
    mbgetmem(449): incomplete copy
    mbgetmem(449): incomplete copy
I'm using OS X 10.4.8 and have no idea of how to proceed. My IT department do not support our Mac's so any help would be greatly appreciated.
    Many Thanks
    Kieran

excellent reply. Thanks for the details.
    Oh, one more thing-
this 30-item limit is just in this same troublesome share.
Before the day gets away from you, ask the network admin to check permissions on this share. Perhaps the 30 files you see are the only ones that you have explicit rights to view.
they may need to ease up on restrictive permissions on this folder/drive.
(Images over a network can be funky, since Mac wants to display a little thumbnail of all those picture files...if you're viewing 'as icons', what happens if you change to 'by list'?...thinking out loud there.)
(not sure if I posted this...lost an open window for a few minutes :o

  • In Nautilus, mounted network shares not showing up right away

I've noticed a strange problem recently (last couple of weeks) where my mounted network shares don't always show up right away in Nautilus (side bar or desktop- like they used to). For example, if I manually mount an NFS share in CL to /media/files it won't pop up in Nautilus right away like it used to. It will only show up after several minutes or if I plug in a thumb drive to trigger it to refresh. Also, when my computer is in suspend and I resume it, all predefined network share mounts in fstab that are indeed mounted won't be present in Nautilus upon resuming from suspend (they did before).
I'm not sure where the problem lies as Nautilus or dbus haven't been upgraded in the repositories recently. I tried looking at recently updated packages but I can't pin it on one that would be causing the problem. I'd like to get an idea of what packages are affected before submitting a bug report. If anyone has any idea on the package I can downgrade no problem and test this further.

Figured out the last filesystem upgrade from Decemeber is causing this. Bug posted- FS#27851.

  • Icloud photostream share not showing all pictures

I made an icloud photostream share for my parents with some fotos. On iPhoto I can't see all the photos inside. On my iphone, istead, I do see all photos, the same happens on the web, i can see all photos there, too.
how can I force iphoto to sync the shared photostream album? thanks

Hi, thank you for your reply. I tried to do so already, and it still don't work. It only get worse.
    here is what happened:
    1) i created a share on photostream/icloud and added 3 persons to it.
    2) i added 3 photos: A1.jpg, A2.jpg and A3.jpg
    3) I made changes to my apple ID, so I had to disconect iphoto from icloud and reconnect it
    4) my new photostream album don't show A1, A2 and A3, but says 3 persons have acces to it. I can see A1, A2 and A3 via web and on my iphone.
    5) I added B1.jpg and B2.jpg via iphoto
    6) On iphoto, i can only see B1 and B2
    7) via web and on iphone i can see the A* and B* photos.
    8) disconnected icloud and connected once more
    9) my shared folder now shows no photos on iphoto, same as point 4
    10) added C1 and C2.jpg
    11) same problem, I can only see C1 and C2 on my iphoto, but all of the photos via web or iphone.
My standard photostream is not affected, only a photostream folder I shared with my friends, and only on my iphoto.
    any other clues?
    thanks

  • Why Family Share not show up on my MacBook Pro? Help

I am supposed to be part of a Family Share account. I can access Family Share & other family member's purchases on my iPad but NOT on my MacBook Pro that is running Maverick OS. I log into iTunes, click on the drop down window at the top where my name is located but when the window drops down Family Share is not an option nor am I able to see the names of the other family members in the group. I have tried going to "System Preferences" to "iCloud" and then try to look for "Manage Family" but it is not there. Even if I then if after getting to "iCloud" & logging into "Account Details" there is not anything about "Manage Family" or "Family Share"
Can you not participate with Family Share using Maverick OS?
I would REALLY appreciate assistance with this issue.

    Hi susieqk,
Welcome to the Support Communities!  The reason you are not seeing the Family Sharing account on your MacBook Pro is because Family Sharing requires OS X Yosemite on your computer.

  • One folder inside a DFS share not showing on some computers

This is a really odd one, here is my config
    Server1\share1
    server2\share1
    and recently added
    server3\share1
server 1 and 3 are in the same site, and server 2 is in a separate site
I have recently added server3\share1 to the site, but I am forcing server1 as the first referral in DFS
    now here is my issue:
I have \\company\dfs\share1 that points to share1 in each of the servers
    I have some folders:
    \\company\dfs\share1\departmet\
    \\company\dfs\share1\users\
    \\company\dfs\share1\departmet\folder1
    \\company\dfs\share1\departmet\folder2
    \\company\dfs\share1\departmet\folder3
now on some PC's folder1 appears to be empty when server1 set set as the active DFS referal, but all other folders and files under share1 will still be populated, only the files under folder1 seem to be gone, if I change the DFS referral to another server,
the files will appear, and if i look at the server share path, the files are there and replicating as expected, so nothing is actually missing
and this only happens on some PC's not all, and only to folder1, everything else works as normal
I added server3 about 3 weeks ago, but this issue has only just occurred, so may not be related, but before server3 was added there were no other options for DFS referrals this site, and i have only ever seed this sort of thing happen when there are multiple
    DFS referrals to choose form
can anyone shed some light on this?

    Hi,
It seems that you enable Access Based Enumeration on the DFS namespace. When users on some PC's did not have permission to access the folder 1 on the server1, the folder 1 appears to be empty when the server1 is set as the active DFS referral. You could give
the users full control permissions to access the folder1 on the server1 to check if the issue still exists.

  • Network shares not showing up in finder

This one has me stumped. I have a 3 computer set up, macbook 10.5.8, imac 10.6.6 and a macbook pro 10.5.8. From both the macbook and iMac I am able to see all other machines on the network and connect with no problem. On the pro I cannot see any of the other machines on the network. I can connect to them using command K and typing in that information, but under shared in the finder it doesn't list anything. I've poured through everything I can think of and every machine is identical in setup. Same workgroup, same firewall setup, same share set up, same everything. Can't figure this one out. I've also had issues with the pro disappearing from the other machine's shared section after time has gone by with no activity. The pro is not in a sleep state at these times and even if I go back to the machine and get it fully running again the connection is lost until I do a restart. FYI all of the machines are in the same vicinity and connecting to the same router so I don't think connectivity is an issue. I don't know if it's related because I haven't had this problem in about 2 weeks and I think I figured it out but the pro was having connection problems a few weeks ago every so often. When I would turn it on it would self assign an ip address. I tracked that problem down to a router security issue and believe I have fixed it but thought I would include that information. Before I figured out how to fix the problem a short term fix was to take the file from Library/Preferences/System Configuration and trash it and then do a restart. The system would rebuild the file and the issue would be taken care of temporarily. Don't think this has anything to do with my current problem either but thought I would include it just in case. What did I miss?

Open Terminal and issue the following command
    ps aux | grep netbios[d]
if you get a line similar to this
    _netbios          45   0,0  0,0  2477156   2456   ??  SNs   9:14am   0:02.44 /usr/sbin/netbiosd
then the daemon is running, otherwise issue the following command to start netbiosd permanently
    sudo launchctl load -w /System/Library/LaunchDaemons/com.apple.netbiosd.plist

  • Why is a network share not showing up in time machine settings when on the wifi?

    Hi all,
I am currently trying to set up time machine for my Macbook air. I have connected an external harddrive to the network router and made it available as a network share. I have both read and write access to the drive, when mounted as a an SMB volume and while connect to the network via Wifi. However, when opening time machine settings and trying to select the backup volume, the network drive doesn't show up.
    What's wrong?
    Kind regards,
    Martin

Time Machine cannot backup to a SMB network volume.
Time Machine may also have problems backing up to AFP volumes on some network attached storage devices (NAS).

  • Network shares not showing in the sidebar

Since ugrading our clients Macs to Lion, any network shares that are managed using workgroup manager are no longer showing up in the users sidebar, and if I try to drag the share to the sidebar it stays for a second then disappears ( the sidebar preferences are set to show the shares)
But if I eject the share and re-connect then it does appear in the sidebar as expected, and ideas how to make it show up on first connection without having to disconnect and reconnect?

Thanks, I did delete the file several times, restating after each attempt. I also tried from guest and other user account - exact same.
Curiously,... the 'shared" and connected devices have started to randomly reappear. I know there are devices connected all the time. So I dont know whats going on.
    Bring back SL.
