G5 shuts down fans race, won't stay on, won't boot up

I just acquired a Power Mac G5 that worked fine when I tested it from the previous owner. As soon as I got it home, it will not operate properly. When it boots up, it either freezes, or goes black screen or I get the "you must restart" message. Often, it refuses to boot up at all. The fans race shortly after boot up, even if it only goes to black screen.
I have reset the SMU several times, unplugged/replugged and tried to reset the PRAM multiple times. Do you have any advice?

Let it cool an hour or more & see if you can...
Get Temperature Monitor to see if it's heat related...

If you have any temps in the 70°C/160°F range, that's likely it.

I also have Jolly's problem. I found the iMovie 9.0.9 folder and tried to launch the older version of iMove. It would not launch. I removed all of the iMovie preferences from the Preferences folder, removed iMove 10 from the applications folder, and restarted my Mac. iMove 9.0.9 still won't launch and I can't access my videos created with the older version of iMovie. Is there a way to uninstall iMovie 10 and reinstall iMovie 9.0.9?

  • 10.5.3 on imac G5 deep sleep, won't shut down, fan runs hard

I updated to 10.5.3 from 10.5.2 on my 17" early iMac G5 and left for the weekend. When I got home, the fan on the computer was loud and the computer wouldn't wake up. I had to use the shut down button. Later, I left for a couple of hours, came back, fan loud, deep sleep, and the shut down button wouldn't work so I unplugged the computer. This happened again this evening. Checked software update and there is nothing new there.

Consider your iMac is almost dead. My first iMac was a G5 and it did not took to long till the fans got louder and louder. It was still in warranty and I took it to Apple Service. They replaced the mainboard.
Hope this info is of help!

  • Windows 10 will not shut down completely? Power light stays on(official july 29th upgrade)

I just upgraded to windows 10 from windows eight and I'm facing shutdown problems because when I asked the PC to shut down; the screen goes off but the power light stays on and basically windows 10 does not shut down completely whenever I have to turn on my PC again, I have to force the power button down until it completely Shuts down and start it back up again.
I tried several troubleshooting tactics wants & browsed YouTube videos and but nothing seems work and I've seen people on this forum complain about same thing and am hoping HP fixes the problem.

YES!!!!! A Solution that worked.  Spread the news.  It has to do with the Intel Virtualization Tehnology. Didn't know what that was until this issue came up in Windows 10. First, find out if this is your issue.   1. I installed the 'Intel Processor Identification Utility' directly from Intel.2. After installation, open the program and go to the 'CPU Technologies' tab.3. If it says 'YES' for Intel Virtualization Tehnology, proceed. Solution...(at least on my system) 1. The next thing you have to do is go into the BIOS.  If you have not done this before, proceed at your own risk.         You need to restart the computer and enter the BIOS (for me I hit F10 at the HP screen)2. Within the BIOS, there is an 'Advanced Options' section3. In this section there is a line for 'Intel Virtualization Tehnology' and it will say enabled or disabled.  My computer said disabled.4. If this is the case, change the option to 'ENABLED'; then SAVE and EXIT from the BIOS.   The Computer will restart and from that point on Shut Down, Sleep, etc. has worked.  WOW this was a frustrating issue. Almost went back to Windos 8.  I take no credit for this solution, I pieced it together from other posts on this issue.  Hope this helps.

  • Laptop shut down during windows 10 update and now won't startup

Hi, My pc shut down during the Windows 10 installation 2 days ago. Since then I tried to start up the pc, without success.
I tried to press F11 during booting but the laptop just stays with a black screen saying "F11... System recovery", until I shut my computer down.If I press no key during booting, the screen remains black (with a bit of a background light) and stays like this for hours until I shut it down. I also tried to use the trick with holding the power button for 30 seconds when the laptop is turned off (I guess you call it a hard reset?), but that didn't work either.  What should I do to get back to the original Windows 8.1? I would like to use my pc again and if possible, to not loose any of my old documents.

Hi , Thank you for visiting the HP Forums! A great place where you can find solutions for your issues, with help from the community! I came across your post about the Notebook, and wanted to assist you! I have looked into your issue about your HP ENVY 17-j000 Notebook and issues with it not responding with a Windows 10 update. Try performing a hard reset. When performing a hard reset please note remove any and all USB devices. Disconnect all non-essential devices. It should continue where it left off. Please let me know how this goes. Thanks.

  • I suddenly cannot open my mailbox AND my computer won't shut down because the mailbox is open - it won't open OR close!

I suddenly cannot open my mailbox.  When I tried to restart my computer (thinking THIS might help), I get the message "The application Mail canceled shut down."  Any ideas?  Thank you!

Right click the Mail icon in the dock, then click option to force quit the mail program.

  • Split X2 after Win 8.1 upgrade shuts down after 5 minutes and has to be hard booted to start up

This has become extremely annoying. I upgraded to Win 8.1 after I bought the X2 just before Christmas. if I leave the X2 for just a few minutes, it will either go into sleep mode or just completely shut down (no way to know which it will do and how long it will take). In any event, it has to be "hard booted", in the sleep case, holding the on/off button down until it shuts off and then restarting, in the "just off" case, just pressing the on/off button to start it again.
In either case, tons of crap regarding all of the applications - Explorer, Word, Excel, Chrome, Outlook, that had to be shut down (unexpectedly).
I did not change the power scheme and it has been reset (probably more than once) to try and correct the problem.
Thanks for anyone that can help me solve this really annoying problem.

    Hi SSteveX2,
Welcome to the HP Forums! I can imagine that would be a frustrating with the random shutdowns. How long do you have it set before it goes to sleep? There are a couple of things to check. Start by running a System File Check to see if encounters any corrupt files. Another option is the using the HP Diagnostic Tools to see if it discovers any issues with your hardware. Run the System Test – Extensive Test.

  • I use Firefox to access the internet-but when I go off the internet but don't shut down, then go back on Firefox it won't open because "it is already running". Task Manager doesn't show that it is operating so I can't shut it off. What to do?

It is in the question but to repeat.
    1. When I go online I use Mozilla Firefox
    2. While I am doing other work, I usually close the internet.
    3. If I go back on the internet and click on Mozilla it won't come up, stating that "it is already running".
    4. Despite that, when I open Task Manager, it doesn't show that it is running so I can't shut it down or open it.
    5. If I log off or shut off the computer, then after I log in or reboot the computer, I can open Mozilla.
    Thanks from a Mozilla fan.

  • Laptop shutting down -- fan?

I've been reading several messages.  I have an old Satellite L35-s2151 and everything was fine when I shut it down last night.  This morning I turned it on and first the screen didn't light up, then it did, but everytime I touched a key, it went into hibernate mode.  I switched modes to no hibernate.  Okay, fine.  Then everytime I touched a key it went into standby mode, even though I set it for an hour.
Now, it stays on for a short period of time, then goes back into standby mode, but I am able to type.  I've updated the bios to 3.1 and cleaned what I could with a vacuum and canned air.
How do I either take apart the keyboard to access the components underneath that need cleaning or do I take off the whole back?  All I could do was to shoot air in any open areas.  I've had this for 2 years, has run perfectly, so this is new for me.
I also have the laptop setting on a circulation type plastic thingamabob.
Should I be taking this apart?  I'm sure there is crud in there and would like to clean it out and hopefully save my fan.  Am I off base as to what is happening?
Any help would be greatly appreciated.     Thanks in advance.

If your laptop was overheating then it would probably just shut off when it gets to hot.  I have not seen one go into hibernation or standby from overheating.
Check and see if the the LCD sensor switch is sticking(it should be sticking up when the LCD is open).  I believe it is on the top cover close to the base of the LCD.  If the switch is sticking then it will cause the display not to appear and/or will cause the laptop to go into hibernatin or standby(depending on your settings).
    Hope this helps

  • 2006 MBP Shuts Down, fans spin, makes me cry.

I've seen reports of logic board issues for shutdowns, but mine sounds different.
My MBP screen (see my footer for specs) will go blank and the fans will start spinning at high speed, requiring me to hold down the power button to power off. Closing the lid on the laptop does not stop the fans from spinning.
    - the problem has become steadily more frequent since the day it began.
    - it can occur shortly after booting up, so it's not completely an overheat issue
    - it occurs more regularly, though, when turning on wifi, launching a program, or copying to/from a thumb drive
    - it occurs more regularly if I am not plugged into a power source.
    - about 1/10 times when I power back on, it will magically be back to where I left it when it powered off, no bootup time needed.
    - other times when i power back on, the screen stays black and the fans start spinning again and I have to hold down power once again to get them to quit.
    - if i 'sleep' the computer, it will always go into crazy mode when I wake it.
Any suggestions would be well appreciated.

"My MBP screen (see my footer for specs) will go blank and the fans will start spinning at high speed, requiring me to hold down the power button to power off. "
Your MBP getting the proper ventilation?
According to the user manual it states in part:
"Do not operate your MacBook Pro on a pillow or other soft material, as the material can block the airflow vents. Never place anything over the keyboard when operating your MacBook Pro. Never push objects into the ventilation openings."
MacBook Pro: Care, Use, and Safety Information
Also, check Apple's Knowledge Base and User Tips for possible solutions. Otherwise, if you have AppleCare, contact them and/or take your MBP to your local Apple Store or AASP.
    Good luck!

  • FF shut down my Adobe flash cuz not updated & won't download now

I've tried to find the A player by using several restore sites but FF has definitely removed it as they indicated on my computer saying it was not updated and was a danger.
I need this plug in but it will not download in any fashion in fact Tools shows no plugins, nor is Adobe of any kind in programs.
I also tried to download by disabling security settings and then another time the firewall and then another time putting Mozilla in safe mode. Can not get it to download just get a blank page that says downloads complete but they are not. can not play utube or news videos or daily motion vids.
    help

You have Shockwave Flash 10.0 r45 (that is Adobe Flashplayer) installed '''''and not disabled''''' in ''Tools > Add-ons > Plug-ins''. It shows with the information automatically submitted with your question (click "More system details" to the right of your original question; if were disabled, it would not show up there).
    Read the following carefully...
There are 2 versions of Adobe Flash:
*an '''ActiveX version''' for IE only
*a '''Plugin version''' for most other browsers including Firefox
*On a Windows system, you should always update both individually.
'''''You do not appear to have the Plugin version for Firefox installed. ''''' If you did, in Add-ons > Plugins you would see "Shockwave Flash ''(version)''". If "Shockwave Flash" is there and is disabled, click the "Enable" button.
Check your Plugins often --> http://www.mozilla.org/en-US/plugincheck/
*only the most popular/used Plugins are known by this page
*page will detect only installed, '''''enabled''''' Plugins
    '''<u>Install or update Adobe Flash</u>'''<br />
#'''<u>Using Firefox</u>''', go to the following link and SAVE the download to your desktop so you can find it later. Un-check any items on that page that you do not want to download (i.e., "McAfee Security Scan Plus":
#When the download is finished, close Firefox (File > Exit '''''OR''''' Firefox button > Exit)
#Click or double-click on the file you just saved to your desktop
#*In the installation window that appears, click the box to the left of "I have read and...." to place a check mark in the box
#*The "Install" button in the lower right corner will now be highlighted, click it.
    #*The installation is quick.
#Start Firefox and test your installation here: https://www.adobe.com/software/flash/about/
#To update/install the ActiveX version for IE '''''only''''', repeat the process, '''<u>but use IE to go to the above website</u>'''.

  • Magic Mouse won't stay paired with booth Boot Camp and Windows 7

So I have a Broadcom Bluetooth 2.1 dongle on Mac Pro 1,1, Lion, Boot Camp 3.3 and Windows 7 latest service pack and latest drivers/operating system. Everything is up-to-date.
My problem started with Windows 7 not wanting to pair with mini alluminum keybord AND magic mouse. I followed a post somewhere and I was able to get the keyboard to pair and work when I switch between Lion and Bootcamp Windows 7 by removing it from Bluetooth Prefs in Lion, adding it to Windows 7 BC, and then adding it again in Lion.
However, magic mouse will still work with onlly one: If I add it to Windows 7 and then restart to Lion, add it there and then restart in Windows, it shows as paired in Windows but it does not respond. I then remove it from Windows 7 and add it again, and it works. Then I reboot in Lion. It is on the list, but not connected. Even the option to connect is not available. I try restarting the mouse, no luck. The only way I can get it to work in Lion again, is to remove it and add it again. Now, I go back to Windows 7, It is there on the list, but it does not respond. In short, the Magic Mouse only seems to want to stay paired (or work) with either Win 7 or Lion. Getting it to work with one cancels the other.
BTW, every time I pair it with Lion, I set it as a Favorite.
    Any suggestions?

Some more info I have gleaned from my 13" white Core 2 Duo Macbook (not sure what generation - came with Tiger though). If I uninstall the Intel graphics drivers, the Sleep option is gone from Windows 7 but it will hibernate, and when resuming from hibernation the screen comes back on. However, when the Intel drivers are reinstalled the "screen off" problem is present for both hybernate and sleep. Two other data points: the power manager can't turn off the screen (after X minutes, etc) and I can't get any picture on an external monitor either. Just wanted to share.
