G5 shuts down on transfer to Mac Pro

Recently purchased Mac Pro and while attempting to transfer data to Mac Pro the G5 would shut down. I made several attempts and it continued to shut down. I adjusted the energy settings so that the G5 would not sleep. I'm sure the firmware is up to date. Would the 800 firewire transfer faster. Any suggestions would be appreciated. Thanks

John,
I do not understand the problem with your G5. I do know that with my wife's G5 the fan speeds up when I have it operating in T-boot.
When I transferred files from my G4, I went through two stages. The initial was using T-boot. The second, ongoing, is via ethernet connection. I use my Macs' gigabit ethernet capability to the max. It's great!! I am the slow link in everything I do these days.
Your Mac pro has two ethernet connections. Have you considered using a direct ethernet connection from your G5 to the second port on your Mac Pro?

Pages died today. Just downloaded the latest update 2 days ago. Last night shutting down my very new MacBook Pro Retina, Pages stopped shut down. Today Pages will not open, all my Pages docs cannot open. Help please! Anybody have a fix?

You probably have 2 versions of Pages on your Mac.
Pages 5 in your Applications folder, will open Pages '09 files but will alter/damage them. It can not open Pages '08 files.
Pages '08/'09 in your Applications/iWork folder which can not open Pages 5 files.
When you were shutting down you probably had an unsaved document open.
You probably are opening the wrong versions of Pages to open the wrong document format.
Pages 5 has had over 90+ features removed.
Most users are going back to Pages 09 whilst Apple sorts this out.

    This is what worked:
"In iTunes, I signed out of the store. I exited itunes and restarted it, logged back into the store (with my apple id), then I pulled down the iTunes menu in the menu bar and selected Check for updates.
At this point it said that iTunes 11.1 was available and I'm downloading now " Quoted from a fellow user.
    It fixed my problem.

  • Some times my mac not getting shut down, some times my mac not getting shut down

some times my mac not getting shut down, some times my mac not getting shut down
it will show white scree for long time and will not shut down

Launch the Console application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ If you’re running Mac OS X 10.7 or later, open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Console in the page that opens.
    Step 1
Select "system.log" from the file list. Enter "BOOT_TIME" (without the quotes) in the search box. Note the times of the log messages referring to boot times. Now clear the search box and scroll back in the log to the time of the most recent boot when you had the problem. Post the messages logged during the time when you had the problem – the text, please, not a screenshot. For example, if the problem is a slow startup taking three minutes, post the messages timestamped within three minutes after the boot time. If the problem is a crash or a shutdown hang, post the messages from before the boot time, when the system was about to crash or was failing to shut down.
Edit out excessive repeats and personal information, if any.
If the log doesn't go back far enough in time, scroll down in the Console file list to /private/var/log/system.log.0.bz2. Search the archived log, and if necessary the older ones below them, for the same information.
    Step 2
    Do the same with kernel.log.
    Step 3
Still in Console, look under System Diagnostic Reports for crash or panic logs, and post the most recent one, if any. For privacy’s sake, I suggest you edit out the “Anonymous UUID,” a long string of letters, numbers, and dashes in the header of the report, if present (it may not be.) Please do not post shutdownStall or hang logs – they're very long and not helpful.

  • Why does starting and shutting down iTunes on my Mac stop movie from playing?

Every time I start or shut down iTunes on my Mac, the movie I'm watching on my Apple TV stops playing and goes back to the menu.  It also loses the spot in the movie, so I have to fast forward to my spot.  Extremely annoying.  EVERY TIME.

Unless it is actually associated with something not working, it isn't a problem. I've always seen it on my machine, which works perfectly and has done so for 2.5 years now.

  • What is the normal shut down time for the mac book pro retina display (late 2013). Mine takes around 20 secs.Is this normal or should i be worried ?

Hi I got a new mac book pro retina display of 8G ram and 256GB ssd (late 2013 model). I was trying to shut down.It was taking around 20-30 secs.Is this normal? When i say shutdown i mean , i just login and shutdown.Do nothing else. I repeated the same process for 4 or 5 times. The numbers are the same.
The boot up takes around 15 secs. Are the numbers crazy or normal.
    Any reply would be helpful.Thanks.

  • Shut down problem on new macbook pro 13"

    Hey,
Just a new convert to mac after ditching my glitchy windows desktop replacement.
Been really enjoying the mac (i've had it for 3 days now). I've experienced a shut down problem where everything would close, like the dock and the bar up the top. What's left is just my background and my mouse which i can still move around. If i press the power button, it brings up the shut down options but if i click shut down, it brings me back to the background again.
The first time, it happened was after i tried opening a macmame.dmg file which was not mounting, and that cause problems with shut down in which i had to force shut down. The 2nd time it happened (which was today), was not as a response to installing anything, or so i would think.
Also, is it 'safe' or normal or better to just leave my laptop on sleep instead of shutting it down? I see a few people doing it and just wondering about the benefits of doing that instead.

I've done that repair disk. So far this shut down thing has only occured twice in 4 days. I've shut the computer down 6-10 times so it's not a reoccuring issue, so hopefully that repair would've resolved anything.
I shall continue to let me mac sleep instead of shutting it down then, seems easier. And good thing to know that theres no viruses... hate working with virus scanners and all other nonsense.
Macmame is just a emulator for some games. It was something I had on windows so just wanted to see whether it worked on mac, I ended up getting it mounted and installed but didnt seem to work as well as on windows so i disabled it.

  • MBP time machine transfer to MAC pro?

i had a MBP w/ snow leopard that was backing up using time machine to a Hard drive. i bought a mac pro and i was wondering if it was possible to back up to it even if its lion osx? or should i just wait til i get another MBP?

When you start a MacOS X computer for the very first time, the Setup Assistant runs automatically to create at least one Admin-enabled account, set up the timezone, etc. Before doing that, it asks you if you want to migrate from another Mac, and it lets you pick the other Mac, an external drive or a Time Machine backup as the source. The end result is that the new computer will be a copy as faithful as possible to the original, including accounts, passwords, configuration, files, compatible applications (Lion doesn't do PowerPC code and doesn't have Rosetta).
If you did not take advantage of this and have let the Setup Assistant run its course and quit, it will not run again. However, you can run the Migration Assistant that can almost do the same and also lets you pick a Time Machine backup as a migration source. MA is found in your Utilities folder.

  • I have Photoshop CS5. It Keeps crashing and shutting down my computer, a MacBook Pro OS X 10.6.8.

Photoshop CS5 shuts down my computer whenever I use the marquis tools or eraser, or copy and drag something.

I just disabled open GL and went back to work on the thing that has been behind the latest crash - and it did not crash this time. So, I am guardedly hopeful, but might be back. Regardless, thank you for your advice.

  • How can i down great a new mac pro 13" retina with osx 10.8 Mountain Lion to osx 10.7 lion?

    Hi Guy's,
Can you help me with the following problem please?
I have a new Macbook pro 13" with retina and a ssd HD.
On this machine is a osx 10.8 Mountain lion installed.
I need to down great this machine to osx 10.7.3. lion
    Bud it won't work.
I use a usb key to bood to 10.7.3 it works always on a normal macbook pro.
Can someone help me on this please?

You can't. No new Mac can run any older version of OS X then what originally came on it.
There are a few exceptions but to do so you would need a model that also came with the older OS at some point but then you would also need the older OS X installer files. Which aren't available to a Mac that came with a later OS X version.

  • Port 548 Shutting Down File Transfer Over Network

OK, nobody laugh, but I am trying to transfer some old work files from an ancient PowerBook 3400 (including many on Zip disks) running OS 8.1 to one of our newer machines so we can look through them at our leisure later and save those of interest.
On the PowerBook, I have successfully connected to both of the new machines (see below) via Chooser and started to copy files to those machines. In the middle of the copy, after a few minutes, I get the following message: 192.168.1.xx:548 "The file server connection has closed down". 192.168.1.xx is the LAN IP address of the receiving machine. Personal File Sharing is allowed, and file permissions have been given to Others in the receiving folder. Do I need to do authorize something on Port 548 to allow the transfer?
Thanks in advance for any suggestions.
    Bob

    Hi Ralph
I can see where that might be the case, but file transfer worked flawlessly BEFORE I went wireless using the same modem. The only way to unblock ports on my router is to turn NAT off - it creates a DMZ, so it permits unhindered 2-way traffic...
It's a pretty confusing piece of kit. Maybe I should just get a Netgear anyway!
I have a laptop on the wireless network as well, and file transfer works a treat between it and the iMac. All I can think of is that because I'm now working on a LAN, there's a blockage to get out to the "Real World" - even though it's easy for video to pass through.
I'll check my unblocked ports again, just to be sure. I'm unfamilar with the term "Jabber" - is that what Apple decided to call one of the elements of iChat? Excuse my ignorance...!

  • After shutting down and flying, my MacBook Pro won't turn on

    Hi -
Laptop was totally secure and supported during flight. Just won't turn on. Tried a new MagSafe just in case.  That works, but the machine won't turn on when I hit the power button.
I already tried the SMC reset steps etc.
    Catherine

Not really. It could be from extended periods of excessive heat, some people just love to use there computers on soft surfaces that help retain heat and fry the unit (I'm not implying that is what you do), and or manufacturing defect of one type or another. Mac's are no different then any other electronic device. One day it works the next it doesn't. Apple would have you think they are made better then other brands, especially for what they cost, but in all honesty they aren't. They are made in the same factories, or type of factories, that all other electronic devices are made today, someplace in Asia, by the same people.

  • Firefox freezes on my dock, I can't force quit or hide or anything and I have to do a hard shut down of my new mac to get it off the dock.

I have gone to the activity monitor and firefox doesn't show up there so I know it isn't running but the icon shows that it is. Force Quit doesn't work, nor can i open firefox from that icon.

I've called the big guys to help you. Good luck.
    This is for Windows, but give it a try;
Do you have the Firefox icon on your quick launch? Right click
on it, and select '''Open New Window.''' Sometimes this works.
If it opens, close it by '''Menu > File > Exit.'''
Type '''about:preferences#advanced'''<Enter> in the address bar.
    Under '''Advanced,''' Select '''Network.'''
Look for '''Configure How Firefox Connects''' and press the '''Settings''' button.
    Check the settings.
Some problems occurs when your Internet security program was set
