G5 shutting down experience

Yup my first generation G5 shut down twice on Saturday. Couldn't sleep so I got up and turned it on and came to this forum. Saw that I'm not the only one; got directed to the extension repair program page
http://www.apple.com/support/imac/repairextensionprogram/
and found my serial # to be in the range; set an appointment at my local store (yes I'm lucky to live in a city with a few of them) for first thing in the AM. They took it in said they had the parts (power supply and logic board-if needed) and said 1-3 days; they called at the end of the day (sunday) and said it was ready for pick up ASAP.
I post this for a couple reasons:
- So many of the post here are negative even when they don't have to be.
- To point out that some of us get helped without ever having to even ask thereby short changing folks on positive feedback
- To illustrate how smooth the fix can/should be (helps greatly to live in a city with an apple store)
- To suggest the possibility that because I only let it shutdown twice I didn't need to replace the logic board too. (not sure this is an absolute truth but the "genius" thought it a possibility)...so take it in as soon as it happens
have fun
Paul
iMac G5   Mac OS X (10.3.9)

Gents
Drawn by the up beat and positive vibe of your posts I wonder if you could maybe help me...
I have a iMac G5 17" and also experienced sleep problems ... I undertook the ectensions programe and had my power supply replaced... All good for a month and now I have the very same problem . My mac randomly pputs itself to sleep, It's part of a working studio and as such is loosing me money.
I took it back to my dealer who seemed a little puzzled and their only suggestion was to replace the logic board for a pricey £500 ! .. It's out of warrenty and Apple have offered very little...
This is my first mac and I bought it because of the renownede stability as a music platform ...
Any help really would be apreciated ..

  • NEW MBPr keeps shutting down on sleep, Not mounting Ext HD + AWESOME Apple Store Experience. :)

I've been using apple products for almost 10 years now (from iPods to iPhones and MBPs). I just got a BRAND NEW MBP Retina last December (2012), I was supposed to use it for school this January, because of it's claim for speed and graphics. I even had it customized!!! Thinking I'd get BETTER performance,I upgraded the Memory and the Processor!!! I wanted to do the HD too but it was too pricey (But of course, they dropped their prices recently. For the same amount I paid in December, I could have gotten better today. *censored curse words here*)
By the time I used the MBPr in January,THE THING KEPT SHUTTING DOWN ON ME!!! Whenever I'd put it to sleep, IT WOULDN'T COME BACK ON!!! I'dlose all the information and files I've been working on for hours! Not only would I have to do them again, the MBP would give me such a DIFFICULT time trying to switch it back on! And when it finally would, it would say something like "Your computer shut down unexpectedly. Would you like to open the programs that were on before it shut down?" Even if I'd click yes, none of my files were recovered.
In addition, 3 out of 10 times it wouldn't mount my External Hard Drive!!! And of course it has to be the times when I'm in a hurry to access important files. To me, this IS an issue. A BIG one. NOT fun, trust me. I know the problem isn't with my External HD because I still have my old MBP (late 2009) and it works fine there, I've repeatedly used it on my sister's and mom's MBP too and there's been no problem whatsoever. It's just with this supposedly "new" MBP Retina.
So I went to the Apple store on 5th Ave, and they scheduled me an appointment about an hour and a half later, which was alright, but for the first time (EVER) the lady who scheduled my appointment gave me some attitude. She set me up for an appointment at 1:45, so just to make sure, I repeated it to her "I can wait around. So that's 1:45?" And she looks at me and says "What? Did you want it LATER? Huh?" Power tripping much? First time I've encountered that kind of customer service, from an apple store, no less.
Anyway, the appointments are their form of "organized chaos", so I didn't mind waiting my turn. The place was pretty packed, as it always is, but I decided to wait it out. My appointment time came around so I checked in on the Apple Store App and again with one of those in blue shirts with an iPad, and he told me to wait for a chair to open and to grab it and someone will come check my MBP. It took a while before a seat was made available, but when one came, I took it. Fast forward, 15 minutes AFTER my appointment time, not a single Apple representative bothered to even make eye contact, ask what time my appointment was or if I needed any help at all. I tried talking to them/calling their attention, but it was as if I was invisible. Just perfect!
Someone FINALLY called my name.. Thirty minutes AFTER my appointment time. I didn't mind waiting an hour and a half for my appointment because I understand that's how the system works. But when my turn comes around, I expect them to keep their end of the bargain too. But I guess that was too much to ask. So anyway, this guy/genius checked my laptop and ran diagnostics on it, I think he used the loghog(?) and it was all there. It had the exact log of how many times the **** thing shut down on me!!!! He said they'd need to do further tests on the MBP, which seemed logical. But he went on to tell me that if they find anything wrong with the hardware, I'd have to be okay with them replacing it with REUSED parts of other laptops!!!! ***?!???? I bought that with hard earned money! Blood sweat and tears. I saved up for that for soooooo long to get something brand new, and here you are telling me, "It's out of the 14-day warranty period, so if we find something wrong with it, you'll have to be okay with us replacing it with USED PARTS!!!" (Non-verbatim, but yeah, he gave me some sugar-coated version of THAT!) I mean, WHAT THE **** IS THAT?!?? Is that what Apple has been reduced to now?!??? Like I said, I've been with them for almost 10 years, and I've influenced my family to use Apple products because PRIOR TO THIS, my experience with them has been EXCELLENT. They've always been superb. I've never had this kind of problem with them when it came to all my (our for that matter) apple merchandise. But now?! I can't believe it. Not only the quality of the laptop was unacceptable, now, even their service is too apparently!!
Way to go Apple Customer Sevice!
Have any of you had the same problems with your MBPr? How were you able to fix it? I paid hard earned money for this, and I really really would still want it to work. I called customer service and instead of apologizing for giving me a lemon, and unacceptable quality, the customer service rep, passed me on to a senior manager who told me exactly this:
Me: Ma'am, I bought this customized and BRAND NEW. I think the quality that you've given me is unacceptable, and I hope you understand that.
Senior Manager: Well, you know, it's a machine. It's like buying a car. It breaks.
Awesome, huh? In any case, my MBPr is with them and here's to hoping I at least get the MBPr life span than that I paid for, even if they do give me subpar quality and service. Has anyone had the same problems with their MBPr? Is this a common problem with them or was mine really just a lemon? Any input will help. Thank you!

same problem, it's been happening to me for a week or two now i'm thinking about backing up my documents and just wiping it completely, see if that works. Has anyone else tried this? I'm loosing time and have already lost a good few hours of work as it just crashes randomly. need help!!!

  • I've followed all the instructions in order to restore my ipod touch yet it won't even turn off or show the red slipper to shut down. I've tried holding down both buttons each at a time it doesn't do anything. Anybody ever experience this? If so help?

I've followed all the instructions in order to restore my ipod touch yet it won't even turn off or show the red slipper to shut down. I've tried holding down both buttons each at a time it doesn't do anything. Anybody ever experience this? If so help? Should I just go to the apple store?

    Try:
    - iOS: Not responding or does not turn on
    - Also try DFU mode after try recovery mode
How to put iPod touch / iPhone into DFU mode « Karthik's scribblings
    - If not successful and you can't fully turn the iOS device fully off, let the battery fully drain. After charging for an least an hour try the above again.
    - Try on another computer
    - If still not successful that usually indicates a hardware problem and an appointment at the Genius Bar of an Apple store is in order.

  • Who also experiences the fact that CC shuts down?

I can't open any type of file to work on in Photoshop CC. The program shuts down immediately.

Hello, I have the same problem, alas. Not directly after the software starts, but after a while.
    I uninstalled & reinstalled.
I signed out of CC and in again, as described above.
Still crashing. A bug fix would be really, really nifty, as I already uninstalled some CS6 stuff as a means of trying to fix the problem  :-D

  • Yosemite 10.10.2 won't shut down and experience frequent finder hangs.

Help! I've only bough my Macbook Air latest version just 3 months ago and now it's giving me lots of headache.
My finder hangs frequently - sometimes during work - the other apps I'm running I'm fine but finder won't respond - I'm unable to open windows, and when I drag my mouse to the desk top, I see a spinning wheel.
When I quit my MAC, sometimes it'll hang at the finder and stop my computer from shutting down.
Tried force quit - won't work
Tried right click on finder - it'll show - finder not responding -
Eventually have to force myself to shut down the computer
I've used disk utility and attempted to fix some permissions.
    One of the log shows:
"Warning: SUID file "systems/Library/CoreServices/RemoteManagemtn/ARDAgent.app/contents/MACOS/ARDAg ent" has been modified and will not be repaired."
I have not idea what that ARD Agent thing is. Tried finder search I got nothing back.
It also repaired some 'Printers.plist" as well and "Private/var/db/displaypolicyd"
I've run disk utility on different days and there's usually something to 'fix'.
But no matter what I do, my finder still hangs and I wonder if there's anything can be done t

    Problem description:
    computer finder hangs
unable to log out or shut down

  • DVI to ADC adapter forcing powerbook to shut down on connection

    Hi there,
I have been using my powerbook 1.25GHz for about 8 months with my DVI to ADC adapter to connect to my 22" cinema display with no troubles whatsoever. Yesterday evening when I came home as soon as connected the adapter to my powerbook- it shut down my powerbook within a couple of seconds. Not only that I was blasted with a 3-5 second low tone from my powerbook as it attempted to restart. At the same time the sleep light (one that purrs softly in sleep mode on the powerbook) flashed in quick succession for the length of time that my powerbook made the the long beep noise.
Following this the computer then makes the usual start up noise but nothing happens on either my powerbook display or the 22" display. I am then required to take out the adapter connection from my powerbook and my computer restarts normally after holding down the start button again.
I have tried a few times now to connect the adapter with the same problem. Has anyone else experienced this or have any idea what the sound being emitted is all about and the disco light display from my powerbook?

The exact same things (low tone, furiously flashing sleep light) has happened to me on several occasions, and it happened again today. I just googled up the symptoms and this is where I landed. The only thing I can correlate among our experiences is that the DVI connection on the powerbook is involved (the problem may or may not have anything to do with the ADC adapter).
For my problem, it's usually occurred after I've either just connected or disconnected a second display using an Apple dvi-->adc powered adapter or a small unpowered dongle (dvi -->vga) for an lcd projector. The restart after either one fails can take quite awhile.
Twice in the past six months, I've been at the "two minute warning" before a presentation, and the book has crapped out just as I connect it to the projector and then it's gone into the psycho light and sound mode you described. Today's failure occurred after unhooking from the powered Apple DVI-->ADC adapter at my desk to go down the hall for a meeting. The computer went into blue screen and stayed there after it was disconnected from the Studio Display and DVI-->ADC adapter. Attempting to hard reset/powerdown by holding down the power button initiated the tone/light flashing.
These few cases may seem pretty isolated, but perhaps a pattern will emerge if people keep adding their experiences.

  • Waking from sleep requires Forced Shut Down on two different g4 iBooks

    Two different iBooks, a 12" 1.33 and a 14" 1.42 . Same behaviour on both iBooks.
Each is running 10.4.4, Each has 1g RAM. Neither have any unusual third party software or hacks. Both exhibited this behaviour prior to 10.4.4, and both had 10.4.2 as the original install, then 10.4.3.
Both go to sleep after three hours, display is set not to turn off before then. They will operate properly for days at a time, but approximately once or twice per week they will have gone to sleep normally, the white light blinking. I'll tap the keyboard to wake up, and the white light will stop blinking but nothing else happens. The cd drives don't make their usual start up racket, nor does the hard drive or fan spin up. Only doing a "Forced Shut Down" by holding down the power button and then restarting will bring either one of them back to life.
I have already Reset the PMU several times over the past 6 months with no change in behaviour. I have also reset the PRAM on both units sucesfully, however that also has not changed the behaviour.
Were this happening on only one iBook, I'd consider it a fluke, but having it happen on both a 12" and a 14", and having read of the others with the same isssue leads me to believe that it is not a unique issue, and is either a hardware or software flaw. Since the advice in every one of these complaints has been rest the PMU and Reset the PRAM, and since this has failed to correct the situation, I'm curious as to whether there is anyone on thes Forums that has knowledge of the problem and a proper fix.
As the issue is truly random and can not be duplicated on demand by manually putting the machine to sleep the "geniuses" have as yet not provided a solution. All I would like is an acknowledgement that there is an issue and that there is hopefully a fix in the works. Even just an acknowledgement that, "it sometimes happens" would be helpful.
Sorry for the long rant, but I keep seeing the same issue brought up over and over again, with the same non-solutions. Any other suggestions or clues would be very much appreciated.
    ibook G4 1.33ghz 12, 1.42ghz 14   Mac OS X (10.4.4)

Nothing, No one..... So out of the hundreds of thousands or perhaps millions, of iBooks sold in the past year, I somehow managed to snag the only 2 that display this problem. Those odds are staggering. A 12" 1.3G4 and a 14" 1.42G4, purchased two months apart. Both in the original factory state, and they both display the same sleep issue, and yet somehow this is unique to my experience.
The sarcasm is intended, and after having to do a forced restart, and then wasting an hour running tech tools to make sure there are no disk issues for the third time this week, this is getting old. I'm not asking anyone for a magical fix, all I'd like is confirmation that the issue is being investigated and will hopefully, eventually be resolved.
    Thank you......

When ever I try to close any conversation window in mac messenger the program automatically shuts down and then asks me to send an error report. The program starts up again and runs fine until I close another conversation window and it shuts down again.....What do I do? How do I resolve this problem?

its most likely a bug in the software.  do you have a beta?  my suggestion would be to get another, stable revision of the program, or update it.  there are also other programs that may or may not work for you.  what all do you need in a program?
    good luck
yes, adium would be good, as would proteus from my experience

  • What is the best way to shut down an iMac that has frozen during a data transfer? The disk I was writing to will not eject. Stopping "copy items to" doesn't work either_ it is frozen as well. Is there a way to force eject the disk so I can shut down?

Some more information on the above: OS: 7.2
    1. None of the shutdown commands would work so I held the power button down and received a prompt that asked if I wished to force eject the drive, I selected
the force eject and then shut down.
    2. Just recently I installed an eSATA _ Thunderbolt_ port multiplier compliant PCIe card (Seritek Q6G) into a thunderbolt external chassis (OWC Helios) (seritek Q6G).
This freeze data transfer also happened when I connected a Firmtek 5PM external tower to the iMac via thunderbolt cable.
The driver for the seritek Q6G was installed in the iMac previous to connection of any of the devices.
Both external towers mount ok on the iMac but have frozen during data transfer.
The initial freeze was with the Firmtek 5PM which is (JBOD)_ I thought that might have had something to do with the freeze_ it being JBOD_ so next I tried the Mercury Elite AL Pro Q2- which is formated in RAID 5. But then froze too.
Anybody have any experience with this?
    Maybe I need another driver?
Or maybe some update to my OS?
    Any suggestions welcomed.
    Thank you

Hello BDAqua, thanx for the suggestions. Before I saw this reply I tried to first quit the finder and then to relaunch the Finder but that resulted was a blank gray screen.
In the end I ended up having to power down the iMac.
Fortunately the RAID array that was "active" seems to be fine and also has a firewire 800 connection so I can use it_ just not with thunderbolt until this issue is solved.
I'm going to check in the Applications>Utilities>system log to see if any clues are evident_ thank you for the suggestion.
PS: Nothing of note was obvious as a root cause in the Activity Monitor though.
hmmm....I was told that the Helios and seritek card were compatable and that the Helios didn't require any drivers..it will be a drag if there isn't an easy fix for this since this new PCIe card from seritek is the first to offer port multiplier compatibility for eSATA to thunderbolt...since they are both new I'm hoping that an OS upgrade will be the fix (presently7.2)...we shall see.

    Updated Premiere

Hi guys; I thought I would share my experience and how I managed to fix this problem. It might help someone.
In my case I kept receiving this message; eventually after re-launching Premiere, I actually paid close attention to the "software loading" information and saw that it got stuck on my installed "Colorista ii" which is a colour grading software.
Now the red bulb came on my head ping!
I recently just upgraded my Mac to the OS X Yosemite & that affected pretty much any non-updated application, which in my case was that and many more of the Red Giant Pacakge; so I searched for the upgrade via Red giant Link, and low and behold I found it and did so. Immediately everything loaded up perfectly fine.. and now can't even do the work, cos I'm so exhausted from an 'almost heartattack'; so going to sleep and commence later in the day I guess..
Now, you might probably want to check if any application on your system needs upgrading to whatever is the operating system on your Mac or PC at this very time. It might help.
    Always back-up.
    I hope I helped someone :-)

  • Persistent USB Arch installation fails to boot after first shut down

    Hey all,
I've recently installed Arch on a 32-GB USB flash drive (with the help of the wiki, of course).  I have some experience installing arch on my computers, so the process went relatively smoothly.  As some background info, I AM using UUIDs in both the bootloader and the fstab file, so that shouldn't be a problem.
Anyways, the problem itself: I have arch installed and ready to go, and it boots up fine (the first time).  The thing is, after I shut down, if I try to boot the USB drive again, it simply hangs there-- no boot.  What's weirder is not only does it not boot, but it also freezes the host computer at that point in the boot cycle.  I mean, everything will be frozen up at the startup BIOS/splash whatever screen when the USB key is in, but once I take it out the computer will boot up regularly.  It's really strange.
If I reinstall the bootloader on the USB drive then everything works again (that is, until I reboot).
Is the bootloader somehow getting corrupted while shutting down?  I have tried using both GRUB and SYSLINUX (not at the same time of course) but they both behave the same.
Any help would be greatly appreciated.
    Thank you for your time,
    Ushahin

    https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Be … nvironment
Here you need to set the right hooks if the root is on a USB drive, if you use RAID, LVM, or if /usr is on a separate partition.
Did you remember to do this?
If not, mount the partition(s) starting with the root partition first, chroot into it, edit that file and re-generate the initramfs. Then reboot with the reboot command, don't forcefully shut it down using the power button or something like that.
It could also be a BIOS issue. Restore its defaults, set "Removable Dev." first, "CD-ROM" second (if you have an optical drive), "Internal Storage" third. Then select the USB stick as the first to boot in the boot priority screen.

  • 1st Gen iMac G5 doesn't turn on--after shutting down during sleep

So I bought an IMAC G5 17/1.6/256/80/COMBO when they first came out. Within the first year and a half I had to get two logic boards replaced. Fast foward to about 4 months after Applecare ran out and the machine began shutting down instead of going to sleep. Then, last week--nothing--wouldn't even turn on. So I unplugged it and plugged it back in and it started fine. Two days ago same thing only now it won't turn on at all. So I took off the cover, internal power button doesn't work--tried reseting SMU and still nothing. LED 2 doesn't come on at all, but LED 1 isn't constant, it flickers (don't know if that's normal). So I assume it's either logic board or power supply.
Now, I've read the Repair Extension program about this model, but unfortunately it only goes out three years (curious because that's how long my AppleCare lasted). And I found it odd that after getting it fixed twice it would still have these defective parts. So I called the support line trying to explain the situation. After being on hold for 20 min. the guy came back and said my warranty was up so I couldn't even talk to someone on the phone about the problem. I could get it fixed, but it was going to cost me.
Anyone have any advice? I was going to get another computer later this year (although will probably change my mind about getting another Mac after this experience), and I know fixing this one will be pretty expensive--something I can't afford right now. Does anyone know the rationale behind a) three year cutoff and b) Apple not informing owners that they'd better get it checked out before period runs out. And I guess as a last resort if it winds up being too expensive to fix, anyone know if people buy broken IMACs? Talk about frustration, I didn't even have to go through this type of nonsense when I used Windows.
    Thanks for your help.

    Problem:
Over the last few months I've had constant problems with freezing, shut downs. This might be in the form of I'll be working in iMovie editing some video and then mouse down into the corner to switch Spaces, the screen will half zoom out then just hang. Mouse won't respond, everything just sits there. I usually have to fix this by holding down the power button until the MBP turns off, then just reboot.
Other times I'll leave the computer on at night, wake up in the morning and it will either be off and as such, I just have to press the power button and it boots up again. Or the screen will be off, metal above the Function keys will be cooking, but the computer isn't responding, just a blank screen. I hold down the power button until it turns off and then reboot again.
These problems were getting worse. It has gotten to the stage where it might freeze a couple of times a day.
Seems the problem only occurs when the MBP is working. I might leave it rendering at night and wake in the morning to find it off etc.
Will also sometimes get horizontial lines in apps. I shut them down and start them up again and it's fine. But it's like the graphics card is struggling big time.
    Actions to Fix:
    - Started with repairing the permissions, but I always found that it had lots of items to repair, would repair then, but then if I verified again, the same things would come up as needing to be repaired. I also tried booting from the OS X DVD and repairing from that version of Disk Utility, but same result.
    - Created new admin user account, to see if problem was just limited to my account. Same problem.
    - Ran AHT from the MBP DVD that came with the MBP and it passed the hardware test. Though I couldn't find anywhere to make it run an extended test. The test I could run would only take about 10 minutes I believe.
    - Erased the HD and fresh install of 10.6.3 from DVD, then software updates  to 10.6.7 (yesterday). Repaired permissions after each step. After the OS upgrade I got a decent list of items that needed to be repaired, and after repair, would still show as needing repair. I checked the KB and it listed a lot of files that might get this error, but that it was ok to ignore them.
    - Was editing video this morning in iMovie again, running Disk Utility on an external drive and boom, the MBP locked up again
I've gone through the /logs/crashlog in both the root and home user folders. After nearly all crashes these are empty, so it's not even reporting it anywhere.
Can anyone shed any light on whhat might be causing the problem?
    <Serial Number Edited by Host>

Actually, when I was at the Apple Store I had both laptops flat, with the screens at 90 degrees. Pushing the screen forward and back with my fingers (via the top of the screen of course), the 15" easily has twice the hinge resistance. With that kind of test, weight isn't a significant factor -- that 17" hinge on a 15" laptop would probably cause the screen to come crashing down, too.
There were a few people in these forums who said their 17" was actually too tight (wish I had that problem!). It seems like a quality/consistency problem that could easily be fixed by A) measuring the force required to move the screen back and forth before screwing the case together, and B) making the hinge tension adjustable.
