G5 Software install disc/restore broken

Does anyone know the process of obtaining a new Powermac G5 Software Install and Restore Disc? I was running disc utility today and it said I had tons of problems. So I open the packaging that has my restore disc in it only to find out it shipped with a 1" long crack in it. So well for booting and reparing my drive.
Anyone know the process of getting a replacement. I tried searching on the apple site but nothing.
Thanks,
adam
Powermac G5 Dual 2.3 Mhz   Mac OS X (10.4.4)

Reminds me of the day I bought OS 8.5. I spent two hours round trip from the store only to find that the CD was cracked in half. After another two hour trip back to the store for an exchange I was finally able to install the new OS.
I'm sure if you call AppleCare they will send you a replacement pronto.

  • Kernal panic with software install and restore disc

I'm trying to access my software install and restore disc for my powerbook G4 running tiger. Everytime I restart the computer with the disc in, and hold down c, I get a kernal panic. There is nothing wrong with the software install and restore disc, as far as I can tell.
    Thanks for any help!
    Powerbook G4   Mac OS X (10.4.6)

is this a tiger disk or a previous operating system? if it is a previous os restore disk, then it is not surprising it would panic. the only software restore disks you would need would be ones to run the apple hardware test and to install or reinstall os 9. otherwise, you should not use a software restore disk for a previous operating system, unless you have erased and installed your drive. • PowerBook G$ (titanium) Software Install and Restore disk

My Powerbook G5 (titanium) Software Install and Restore disk will not function as described in the ReadMe document. I want to install OS X from this CD onto my new Iomega 160 Gig Hard Drive. I put the CD into my PowerBook and it comes up fine on the Desktop. However, when I click on the install OS X icon a pop-up appears and says I will have to re-start my computer and another pop-up appears and asks for my administrator password. When I type it in the computer attempts to re-start ( a blue shut-down screen appears) but it never does re-start or shut-down. The blue screen remains but nothing further happens.
Can anyone tell me what I may be doing wrong? Thanks in advance for your help. My email address is: [email protected]

    Cshepe,
try booting from your OS X CD directly: Leave the CD inside the PB and shut it down. Press the power button and hold down "c" for a while until you see a blue background and the OS X installation program.
Btw, there's no need to reveal your email address, since any (technical) discussion should always be public, so others can chime in or solve their own, similar issues.

  • Flashing question mark/software install disc problem

    Hello,
I'm getting the flashing question mark at reboot. I've followed these steps:
    a. Insert the Software Install disc that came with your Mac.
    b. Restart the computer and immediately press and hold the C key to start up from the disc.
    c. When you see the Installer screen, choose Open Disk Utility from the Installer menu.
    d. Select your hard disk volume in the left pane, click the First Aid tab, and then click Repair Disk.
    e. When it's finished, restart your computer.
HOWEVER, when I restart my computer it STILL reads/loads from the install disc (as opposed to just booting from my hard drive). It's like a endless loop I can't get out of. Am I doing something wrong?
    Any suggestions?

  • EMac software install discs on iMac, will it work right?

Hello, I've a couple of G3 iMacs that I've installed OS 10.3.3 on. The discs used are for eMacs (2 sets of discs) they came with universal installers. What I'm wondering is, is the build of OS 10.3.3 specifically for the eMac and the G4 processor or should they work fine with my G3 iMacs? I'ved had issues with older pre os x learning games for kids on these iMacs and am wondering if this could be the problem. I did not install the additional software and apps on disc 2 of the eMac software restore discs, but did use the OS 9.2.2 classic support install disc from my G5 iMac to install classic support on to the G3 iMacs. It sounds like maybe I've left myself plenty of room for problems to arise.
Hope you all can help clear this up for this computer late starter.
    Thank You!

  • Software Install Disc Won't Boot

Please help, I found a Power Mac G4 that somebody had thrown away(M# 5183 450 MHz DP/2X1M Cache/128 MB Ram It has vertical sound ports and a AGP Card. Has the year 2000 on back) . It would not boot, I found a pinched wire on the power supply, now it boots with some version of X. But it is password protected, I want to wipe the drive and install an OS from an install disc I got off ebay(For a Power Mac G4 year 2000 SSW version 9.04 691-2739-A).
Now the fun begins. The CD will not boot with C depressed, I've tried resetting the PRAM, and sometimes I get a screen telling me to reboot and after I do the protected os will load. I tried booting with cmd-opt-O-F; this said I had a power mac 3,3 3.1f1 BootROM built on 6/28/00. Tried booting with options depressed it just shows me the drive I want to get rid of. Tried cmd-opt-shift-delete on startup nothing would load as long as the keys were down, the protected os loads when they are released. I also tried moving the jumpers on the hd from master to cable select.
Do I need an osX install disc to get rid of X ? any thoughts would be appreciated .
    G4   Mac OS 9.0.x

    Hi, macaraina -
    Welcome to Apple's Discussions.
Your G4 450MHz DP machine is a Gigabit Ethernet model. Those models originally shipped with a model-specific version of OS 9.0.4; later models may have shipped with OS 9.1.
I suspect the CD you got on eBay is not valid for your machine.
In addition, the version of Drive Setup that came with OS 9.0.4 and earlier had a defect - when used to format a drive as Mac OS Extended (which is the correct format for OS 9 and also valid for OSX), such as when wiping a drive, it can leave the drive vuknerable to getting a wrapper error.
Article #31056 - HFS Wrapper Partition Damaged
For those reasons, particularly the second one, I suggest you get either a retail OS 9.1 Install CD or a retail OS 9.2.1 Install CD - either is suitable for your model. All retail OS 9 Install CDs those are white, with a large gold 9 on them; the retail OS 9 Install CD's have a universal installer; model-specific Install CD's do not.
You can often get retail OS 9 Install CD's in various versions at sites like these -

  • Software install discs

Can I take Photoshop CS5 install discs thru airport xray security without them being damaged?
Would putting them in an anti static sleave help?
I have an anti static sleave that came with an internal HD, which I can use.
    Thank you.

The information on CDs and DVDs is stored physically and not through magnetic fields and therefore won't be affected by xrays.

  • Laptop stolen and software install disc's as well

Hi, I was burgled does anyone know if apple will supply me with new discs? I purchased an upgrade from 7 and I still have my dongle. Can anyone advise me how to go about this and who/where/how to contact apple to ask.
    Thanks Phil

At least you have your serial number, so assuming you can source the media you will be fine.
Same thing happened to me earlier this year, though in my case it was the hardware dongle for Cubase that was stolen. I still have the install disks and the serial number, but without the Syncrosoft license key it is useless. With iLok things would have been ok, but as a result of the dongle policy, the net result is that I would have to buy a new copy of Cubase. Instead I decided to stick with Logc and use it on the shiney new Macbook Pro and iMac that was supplied.
Steinberg's loss, Apple's gain (I replaced Nuendo with Logic last year).
These things are difficult and it's horrible that it happened at all, but with any luck something good will come out of it all in the end.

  • Unable to run Software Install/Restore Disk, Help!

    Hi,
Currently unable to run my original Software Install and Restore disk.
Can force the CD tray to open, Disk drive is working fine and can hear it whirring but not running the program on disk!
Tried holding C key not working (did run my Apple Hardware Test disk though)
Also tried Holding Command, Option, Shift and Delete keys (to disable hard drive as described in Apple help info)
If anyone has any suggestions I’m know throwing in potential marriage to anyone with an answer that’ll work.
(Please note: I’d love to buy DiskWarrior but at £70 and currently being unemployed, that is definitely a last resort.)
MY ORIGINAL PROBLEM IS OUTLINED BELOW
    Hi nice people.
    I own a –G4 imac 15” flat panel, running OSX10.2
Currently after turning on my computer I get the following-
The start up tone, then a screen with the grey apple logo, I then get the spinning grey progress wheel and this is how the computer remains, not progressing from this screen!
The hard drive is making an active noise for the first minute and then goes quiet.
    Previously to this situation-
My computer kept locking up while I was using the Internet.
Seeing the progress indicator (spinning disc) it remained constant and I was not able to do anything from this point. Tried force quitting nothing.
Switching off the computer with the power button led me to me my current situation.
I have followed all online help advice that seems to be relevant and have tried the following-
    Resetting PRAM_
    Safe Boot_
I have also disconnected all additional devices and Ethernet connection.
    Bugger.

Ok, well they don't actually have them anymore, but if one calls up and says they lost their cds, Apple SOS can send a duplicate, but whether or not its the actual 4 cds and two 10.2.1 cds that remains to be seen, but according to what they told me they no longer provide the cds unless the customer mentions that it was lost or misplaced.

  • Can I restore my system from install discs when DVD drive is not working?

Can I restore my system from install discs when the DVD drive in my iMac G5 is not working?
There is a disc jammed in the drive and when I try to do an install in Target Firewire mode using a G5 Tower I get an error saying the software cannot be installed on this machine, before I can even select the iMac's drive. I'm using the grey software install discs that came with the iMac.
Is my only option to open up the iMac and get the jammed disc out?
    Thanks

You need to set up the FireWire Target Disk mode installation with the iMac as host, so that it runs its own install disk. The G5 tower should be the target, so that you are "borrowing" only its DVD drive.
Shut down the iMac. Put the iMac install disk into the G5 tower, and reboot the G5 tower into TDM by holding down the T key. Connect the FireWire cable and then restart the iMac while holding down the option key. Hopefully the iMac startup manager will see the install disk that is in the tower; if so then select it and boot from there.

  • Leopard install disc

The hard drive on my macbook died (13" white with osx10.5.8 installed) I replaced the drive and reinstalled the software but my disc had no installers for iphoto or imovie. The software was on the computer originally. Do I need to purchase ilife to get the software. I always assumed they were on the installation disc and never backed up the actual programs.

The original software included with the computer at point of sale,
was a two-disc installer set. The first disc is a bootable install-
restore disc with most of the original software and the second
disc includes some apps and extras; in some configurations, both
discs would be asked for, in process of restoring the original goods.
Some computers may have included more than two software discs.
Did the computer ship with Leopard 10.5? Some earlier white 13"
Intel-based Macs shipped with a special version of Tiger 10.4. The
    first Intel-based MacBooks shipped in about 05-2006 ~ 11-2006.
The 'Late-2007' MacBook 13" computer was the first to ship with
Leopard 10.5, and Mid-2009 was last to ship Leopard, 10.5.7.
The Mid-2009 version was the transition, as later it had 10.6.x.
The original software install disc #1 would also include an official
version of the Apple Hardware Test in a partition on that DVD; it
requires a different key on start-up to launch, than to boot installer.
If you have a Leopard 10.5 install-restore DVD for that computer,
the disc #1 should have this Apple Hardware Test.
The second disc would have the rest of the applications, including
iLife, and other apps offered with the unit at time of sale.
If you are missing discs or have a damaged disc, you could contact
    Apple Sales by phone, and have your computer serial number handy;
there is a fee for replacement software. 1-800-MY-APPLE. Or you
may also be able to contact AppleCare by phone to get this item.
You should also be able to better define the computer model you have
and other details by using a serial number identifier web site; where a
serial number is entered and configuration info appears on their page.
Or, check the discs you have against the OS X version shipped with
similar Macs by using MacTracker's database app. Download it from
http://mactracker.ca web site and check your hardware version specs.
    Good luck & happy computing!

  • Dutch iMac tray loader software install problem

    Hello there.
I've got a near mint, boxed, tray loading iMac that I acquired for a collector friend of mine. It was originally sold in Holland and has a Dutch version of OS 8.5 installed. Not speaking dutch I cannot work out whether I can change the language within the current install.
Also I have been unable to install an English version in it's place. I have an appropriate English set of discs for the right model but when I put in the software install disc it says it cannot mount an image to install the software. When I put in the software restore disc it says the hard disc is locked and tells me to quit. I'm not familiar with this early type of iMac, my first iMac was a slot loader and that was a long time ago so I am at a loss as what to do.
My friend is coming to collect it tomorrow and I promised him I could get an English copy of the OS onto it. It's midnight here. (doh)
Can I install a copy of OS9 over the top? I have the discs (OS 9.1 I think) from my original slot loader.
Rapid solutions will be gratefully received !!
    Cheers, L2K8

    Hi Kenichi,
    You read my mind !
I didn't start from the disc last time so was just trying that when you posted. I get further in the process if I ignore the 'no destination' message and it starts to install then stops saying 'No destination chosen'.
I have the original Dutch 8.5 discs and a set of original English 8.5 discs from a trayloader but they all stall at the choose destination point. There is no disk available to choose.
Can I erase the hard drive from one of the install discs in the optical drive like you can with disc utility on OSX ? Maybe that would override the locked disc problem.
    Cheers, L2K8

  • Repair and Install - Disc 2 not asked for

I just completed a repair install of OS 10.3.9 on a friends PowerBook G4. Everything seems to be working fine, but I expected the process to request the Software Install and Restore Disc 2 of 2 after the first disc was finishing installing the operating system.
Does anyone know what is on Disc 2 of 2, and if the installer should have requested it after Disc 1 completed?
    Thanks!

    TinaJo:
I can't remember what is on Disk 2, but I believe there are additional applications, like AppleWorks. If you did not choose to install additional applications your disk would not be needed.
If your OS is running fine, and you don't notice anything lacking, you are likely in good shape.
    Good luck.

  • Reinstall of Tiger Missing Garageband; Software Install cd?

I noticed a previous post on this same issue. I, too, had to reformat my hd, and reinstall Tiger. In the process, Garageband was dropped. If the reply to the author's post is correct, the Tiger DVD Install Disc does not have Garageband on it? The app, he was told, is part of a Software Install cd? Unless that's Disc 2 of the OS X Install DVD's, I don't believe my first generation G5 came with a software install disc. What are my options? Buy iLife?

    Hang Time,
Yes, Disc 2 only contained OS 9.2, etc. However, the prompt I got when I attempted to open Garage Band was:
    Instrument Library is invalid!
The instrument library is invalid. GarageBand expects a valid instrument Library folder in/Library/Application Support/GarageBand.
Please choose a valid instrument Library folder or quit and reinstall GarageBand.
And a previous post prompted me to look at the backup I made before my hard drive got wiped clean, specifically:
    /Library/Application Support/Garage Band/Instrument Library.
I determined that the Garage Band folder was missing from my reinstall of Tiger, and dragged it's contents from the external hd into my G5. It appeared that a copy was successfully made(a lot of files got transferred), but when I clicked on the Loop Browser, I got the prompt that there were no loops present, and the buttons were all grey. Why can't I access these Apple loops? Any idea? Your help would be appreciated.
    Thanks,
    Bill
