G5 started on fire tonight

Our G5 popped and started on fire tonight. The whole room was filled with smoke. I am glad we were home. This is a serious problem. I was wondering if anyone else has had this type of problem??
I am going to take the machine to the apple store in the morning. I am worried that this might happen to others and they may not be as fortunate as we were tonight.
Has anyone had this problem.

This is very rare, however, if the liquid cooling system (links to G5 models with liquid cooling) started to fail, it might have been a reason for that to happen. The other reasons this might happen are:
1. Improper grounding of your electrical, and touching your computer keyboard while conencted immediately after walking across a wet rug. I did this once to a PC and it blew a capacitor.
2. Power surges that happen because of electrical storm, or bad electricity in the home. Have an electrician check for this.
3. Some PowerMac G5s have an Exchange/repair program for power supply issues.
4. iMac G5s have a history of issues with capacitors for which an exchange/repair program has been instituted.
5. Improper ventilation of the computer whether by:
- placing it in direct sunlight any time during the day.
- placing the computer directly on a carpeted floor.
- placing the computer with the vents against a wall or desk with no clearence. Feel the back of the vents for hot air. If it isn't allowed to escape a far enough distance to the point the air becomes a normal temperature you may create a situation where the computer could overheat.
6. A fan issue happens with the computer. This often can be detected by the hardware test that shipped with the computer new:

If you don't have those discs and purchased it used, get the person you bought it from to give you the discs, as they aren't their's to keep. If they lost them, have them call AppleCare for them. Otherwise if you bought the machine new, call AppleCare yourself for them. If AppleCare doesn't have the discs anymore, I would periodically have the machine checked by a service center to make sure the fans are in good working order.
7. Also any Mac that is 4 or more years old should get its clock battery replaced every 4 years if it has one. That shouldn't cause the machine to overheat, still it is important to do.

If you use extensions (Tools > Add-ons > Extensions) like <i>Adblock Plus</i> or <i>NoScript</i> or <i>Flash Block</i> that can block content then make sure that such extensions aren't blocking content.
Start Firefox in <u>Safe Mode</u> to check if one of the extensions (Firefox/Tools > Add-ons > Extensions) or if hardware acceleration is causing the problem (switch to the DEFAULT theme: Firefox/Tools > Add-ons > Appearance).
*Do not click the Reset button on the Safe mode start window or otherwise make changes.
You can use one of these to start Firefox in <u>Safe mode</u>:
*On Windows, hold down the Shift key while starting Firefox with a double-click on the Firefox desktop shortcut
*On Mac, hold down the Options key while starting Firefox
*Help > Restart with Add-ons Disabled
If it works in Firefox Safe-mode then disable all extensions (Tools > Add-ons > Extensions) and then try to find which is causing it by enabling one extension at a time until the problem reappears.
Close and restart Firefox after each change via "File > Exit" (Mac: "Firefox > Quit"; Linux: "File > Quit")

My charger just started on fire and I wasn't even using my phone while it was charging.

If you do not live near an apple retail store, you should call applecare as soon as possible.  They may request photos of the area after the incident.

My charger had a melt down and nearly started a fire in the house.  Has this happen to anyone else?

Does not matter if it happened to anyone.  The fact of the matter is that it happened to YOU!
You need to report this (call) to Apple asap!!!!!

• Light on iphone4 flash will not turn off even when phone is powered down, now it is overheated and says not usable till cooled, but it won't cool.  I'm afraid it will start a fire.

light on iphone4 flash will not turn off even when phone is powered down, now it is overheated and says not usable till cooled, but it won't cool.  I'm afraid it will start a fire.  Aside from breaking it, putting in in a metal pail in the yard, or putting it in a bucket of water, what can be done to keep it from setting a fire.  It is so hot it burns my skin if i touch it, so bright, it hurts to look at, so hot there is now a warning that it is not usable till it cools down, but there is no way to cool it down.

more info, this happened after update to 7.0.2, and also wifi will no longer turn on since update.  I took it in to apple store, it had one month left on warrenty, and they said that it would have had to get wet for this to happen.  I thought that maybe it got wet through my jeans pocket in the rain or something so I didn't pursue it.  Now of course, it is out of warranty by a month.

• My Relatively Glitch Free Thunderbolt Started Re-booting Tonight

Hello All,
Well I've had my TB since I Believe 3-19 and have had minor issues with it before and after the update (Updated on 5-13) Until tonight.
It has started to re-boot on its own while in use and not in use. 3 times in 2 hours to be exact.
I haven't added any recent apps, or anything.
I guess I am wondering if Anybody else is in the same boat?
I have been reading the forums since my switch from AT@T in March and see that this is familiar with a lot of TB owners but
Why Now for this unit?
Is Verizon doing something to there network or is this just a Fail Phone?
Thanks for taking the time to read this.
Any thoughts?

Mine acted up after the update. Rebooted few times a day. There making an update to fix the update. I got a replacement without update and it doesn't happen.

• I can not start up fire fox

i click on fire fox to open but nothing happens

We're sorry to hear that your Firefox seems to be crashing when you open it. Please perform the following steps to give us a crash report ID that helps us find out more about the cause of the crash.
#Press the following shortcut to get a Run window: [Windows] + [R]. This should bring up a window that contains a text field.
#In that text field, enter %APPDATA% and press Enter. An explorer window should open.
#From that explorer window, double-click on the Mozilla folder, then double-click on Firefox and then on Crash reports. Double-click on submitted.
#Now, you should see a list of files that contain reports. Go to View > Arrange Icons by > Modified to get the most recent files at the top of the window.
#Open the most recent 5 files with a text editor and copy the IDs.
#Paste each ID into the reply window on the forums.
Thanks in advance!

• How do I fix a 'Profile Missing' pop-up box when I try to start up Fire Fox?

so i wanted to reinstall firefox on my mac so i moved the profile to the recalling bin to get rid of all the add ons and stuff now it won't let me open firefox at all as the profiles missing but shouldn't it just create a new one if i downloaded it fresh

Hello strenny
go to ~/Library/Firefox ( The tilde character (~) refers to the current user's Home folder, so ~/Library is the /Macintosh HD/Users/<username>/Library folder) and find the profiles.ini file and delete it, then when you start firefox again, a new default profile folder will be created and only a single profile, the new "default", will be listed in the Profile Manager.
The profiles.ini file is located inside the "Firefox" folder in the profile folder path.
thank you

• I bought a Mac book pro. I tried to start it up tonight. When I enter my pass work that window dims and that's as far as I can go ... Can't even get in ...

Hi. I bought a Mac book pro and when I enter my password that box dims and that's all that happens. Anyone have any suggestions?

If this is a new machine, it'd be considered DOA (dead on arrival) - return it to the store; Apple stores have a 14 day return period. I'd ask for a replacement or a refund.

• Ibook started on fire

Well after a good 5 years my ibook has died. Today when I tried to turn it on I saw a bunch of sparks under the case by the power button and then I saw smoke and could smell the burning plastic. I bought my self a new PC so I'm happy it could hold out that long for me. My question is, sometime ago my CD drive stopped working. I can still turn it on for small amounts of time. How do I go about getting all my info and important files off of the MAC and onto my new PC. Mainly pictures, music, and documents. Is there a way to link them without using a network?

My recommendation would be to buy an inexpensive 2.5" USB enclosure, and get your old hard drive out of that iBook and into the enclosure. That way you're not risking further calamity to yourself or the files!

• I started watching a rental, but wanted to finish it tonight before my 24hours is up. But the movie is gone.

I rented this movie last night at 10pm. But, got tired and turned it off at 11. I went back to start watching it tonight, at 9pm. But the movie had disappeared. It says my rental time yesterday was 8pm! How is that even possible?? I definitely didn't rent it until 10, after kid was in bed.

Tried hard restart and all. No change.

• When I start Firefox, I get this alert message "[JavaScript Application] XML tag name mismatch (expected META)". What is this message?

My firefox updated today automatically, and then when it started up, it displayed this alert message:
"[JavaScript Application] XML tag name mismatch (expected META)"
I can press OK and my browser then works just fine and I can go to websites and what-not. I have not run across any problems or anything. I am just wondering what this alert message means and if I should fix it?
I tried closing the browser and pulling it back up, and the same message was displayed. Also, if I open a new window the same message is displayed. But it is only displayed right when I open the browser, and does not show up anytime while using the browser.

If you click the Home button from another page, does the error repeat? If so, what is your home page?
When Firefox starts, it fires up a lot of add-ons. A standard diagnostic for add-on issues is to try Firefox's Safe Mode.
First, I recommend backing up your Firefox settings in case something goes wrong. See Backing up your information. (You can copy your entire Firefox profile folder somewhere outside of the Mozilla folder.)
Next, restart Firefox in Firefox's Safe Mode (Safe Mode) using
Help > Restart with Add-ons Disabled
In the Safe Mode dialog, do not check any boxes, just click "Continue in Safe Mode."
Do you still get the message? If not, one of your add-ons might not be fully compatible with Firefox 14 or might need an update.

• ON FIRE!!!!!

The power cord started on fire!! It was right up near where the cord connects with the piece that is inserted into the computer. Really, it sparked then flamed up on me! It looks like it was running hot too, the metal around the area looks a little warped.
The computer is about 4 years old, so I'm guessing this isn't covered under any kind of warranty anymore. So am I just SOL here?? I mean, the **** thing STARTED ON FIRE!!!! Is there anything I can do to at least get a new power cord out of this?

Hi, Hugh, and welcome to Apple Discussions. The low-voltage power cord from the adapter brick to the computer typically gets a lot of wear and tear, mostly concentrated at the points where it joins the brick and where it joins the plug. Like any electrical cord, it will eventually fray and break where it has been flexed and twisted the most, and if positive and negative conductors inside it come into contact when it breaks, sparking is the result.
Apple has used three or four different kinds of strain-relief casings at the ends of that low-voltage cable through the years, and some have been more successful than others. You probably had one of the earlier and less successful variations, and in a perfect world, you should instead have gotten one of the better ones. Call Apple Customer Relations at 1-800-767-2775, calmly and politely explain what happened, and request a new adapter. We've seen a number of posts here from people who did this successfully under circumstances like yours.
