G5 startup: screens stay dark & drive (or fans) spinning at high speed
Good morning!
I'm new to the forum and I apologize if this has been answered in the past. I'm running a G5 and when I tried to start it, immediately the fans or drives start going into overtime. They are spinning very fast and will not slow down. In addition, the screens stay black. I made sure the G5 was not trying to recognize a disc in the tray, but it is empty. I've also disconnected all my equipment (firewire and USB)to make sure there was no "interference" with my external gear. I've tried to restart several times by holding down the startup button for 5 seconds, let the drives/fans stop spinning and then restarting, but the same thing happens. I've also tried to start in the SafeMode by holding down the Shift key, but again nothing changed. Any help is greatly appreciated!
Bart
I see there are many references to this problem. I've worked with apple care on at least three occasions. I've learned to apply each of the recommendations listed in the responses. When it happened again this morning, I was able to restart the computer with a combination of unplugging the power, re-seating the ram, resetting the smc and nvram. My question is, has anyone learned of a permanent fix for this problem? I would love to listen to whatever is recommended. Thanks.

Boot chimes sound but the screen stays dark - why?
Our iBook (16 VRAM) 700 has appeared to die. The normal boot chimes sound when the power switch is pressed (but only after a forced quit) but the screen stays dark and no hard drive activity can be heard.
Is this probably the "dreaded logic board video chip problem" I have read about in several places?
If so how do I rescue important files (like my wife's novel)!!! Strip the computer down and pull the hard drive? It was running Panther so there is no Time Machine backup.
Old Mac OzHave you tried starting up in Safe Mode? (This probably won't work, but it's worth a try.)
After leaving it sit overnight, does squeezing the case to the left of the trackpad allow you to start up and work for a bit as long as you keep the pressure on it there? If so, you may want to consider trying the shim fix suggested by John Sawyer in the Apple Discussions iBook G3 (Dual USB) Displays Forum:
[Y]ou can often fix this yourself by removing the iBook's bottom housing, and placing a shim of any sort, about 1mm to 1.5mm thick, onto the raised square on the bottom shield. I use a Scotch mounting square--you can get them in hardware stores and many grocery stores. When you reinstall the bottom case, it will press against this shim, which will press against the graphics chip, and may allow the chip to come into better contact with the logic board.

Resolution changed on remote display. Fan runs at HIGH speed.
Today, for no reason, resolution changed on remote display. Option needed no longer shown. Tried SMC and PRAM resets. Now resolution on the MAC AIR is messed up (not full screen) and the fan runs at HIGH speed. This is a sudden change. Have been using the MAC Air in this exact configuration for 2 years. Tried restart/reset of monitor. Nothing. Did resets on MAC and screen changed there. Also the fan runs at high speed.
Hi donaldfromsaint charles,

Hello ,
let me know , is it normal fan spinning in maximum speed continually when playing games ?
Thanks .Ive been doing some research on your gpu friend, ypur gpu component is not what we would consider gaming certifide, and also seeing as how your product is 4 years into its life cycle we can expect it to react the way it is now (my opinion) you may correct me if im wrong.
Anyway if at all possible delet drivers and software from system, be sure to download the newest whql drivers from AMD and also on there site the have a recomended way for you to do so, that should minize the driver store from taking on any misconfigurations from before. As a reference on the AMD site it should be along the lines of installing new drivers and deletings drivers, read through them both to be sure, hopefully it should help you out a bit but hope for best and expect the worse.
Time to put her to bed and get a new gaming campanion bro.
Good luck.

why does my fan go into high speed noisy mode sometimes when I'm not actually doing anything on my laptop?
Probably Spotlight is indexing your HD? To stop this indexing, have a look here:

Early 2008 MacBookPro keyboard backlight off and fans run at high speed
Hi!
I wrote from Turkey.
My Early 2008 MacBookPro 2.40 ghz 4 gb Ram OSX Mavericks machine's keyboard backlight off and fans run at high speed; it seems an exact smc resetting problem.
So i tried the 2 ways of SMC restting procedure; both battery you can move and not, but nothings changed on the situation..
On the way for removable battery; nothing changed but on the way for umremovable battery way; keyboard backlight flashes and gone, but fans are at high speed not changed. So nothing changed.
What can i do right now? i'll wait for your advices
ThanksYour Mac may need a new PRAM battery. Once it is over 4 years old, that often is needed.

Macbook Pro Fans Running At High Speed
My MBP 17" CoreDuo 2.16ghz came back from having the Logic Board replaced at the weekend. All is well except that now the fans run at high speed all the time.
I have installed SMCFanControl, and the current readings are 45 / 113 degrees and the fans are running at 5500 rpm. I took the machine back to the Apple store but when I was there the fans didn't go above 3000rpm (typical huh?). It's nice that the case is now a lot cooler than it used to be but the fans seem very loud to me.
The question is, is this normal? I am not running anything very heavy duty at the moment. Any ideas?
Thanks
MattI tend to agree with Ned on SMC fan control (that it arguably causes more problems than it solves).
I had a similar problem with mine recently having the fans run constantly and at full speed. My temperatures never approached yours, but it would fail to go to sleep etc.
I would start with the advice Ned gave you. This is the same path Apple Care led me down in trying to resolve the issue.
Ultimately though I had to do an archival install of the operating system. It is non-destructive so it wasn't a big deal. I just had to slowly re-install patches and observe behavior. Oddly I was able to patch back up to 10.4.9 without the issue re-occuring so the root cause is still a mystery to me.
edit
Patch gone bad maybe? I tried re-applying the 10.4.9 combo before attempting the archival install route with no success. I know that has been suggested many times. Apparenty it solves many issues, but it failed to solve mine. -
Fan running at high speed (iMac 2011)
I'm using an iMac mid-2011 model, 21.5". For the past few weeks, I'm facing an issue where the fan runs at high speed (>3900 rpm). This generally happens when I use the mac for more than an hour with simple tasks like browsing, checking mails, working on word / powerpoint, etc. If I play a game or watch a video, it happens faster in 15 - 30 mins.
I've tried SMS reset several times but it did not help.
I also ran the apple hardware test (extended testing) and got the following error:
4SNS / 1 / 40000000 : TS2p - 121.250
Could anyone help me understand what this error means?
Thanks. There is a sensor error. That is most likely why you are experiencing the problem. Take it in for service.

Laptop won't start up, no screen, no hard drive, no fan
I've been looking around but I can't find a solution to this problem anywhere. I have a HP pavilion DV 2000 series. When I push the power button all of the lights above the keyboard turn on (Volume control, play, rewind, fast forward, ect) as well as the power light (Solid). But that is all that happens.
The screen does not turn on, the hard drive does not spin, the fan does not power on. The computer will not go into sleep mode when closed.
I've already tried the hard reset technique with holding the power button several times with no results. There are no blinking lights and no beeping of any kind.
If anyone knows a solution please help.
This question was solved.

Satellite Pro M40: screen stays dark untill Windows has fully loaded
Hello to all on here.
I have a problem with my laptop. My laptop is a Satellite Pro M40.
When I turn on my laptop I have found the back light will not come on... the screen will stay dark untill it has fully loaded into Windows. I have checked all of my power options and there all fine. Even if I can get to the Bios screen its impossible to read the txt due to no backlight. I have tried holding the Fn & F7.. noy joy.
Does anyone have any ideas?
RichardHello Richard
I didnt see something like that before and I am little bit confused why you can not see BIOS settings but running OS. Usage of FN+F7 key combination will not help because this option works just under Windows and not under DOS level.
If possible try to connect external monitor and test it again. Anyway I dont believe that you can fix it on your own. Try please to contact Toshiba authorized service partner in your country. Explain the situation and you will see what they will say.
If you find out something please let us know. It will be really interesting to know why this happen. -

what is the problem when the screen goes dark and you cant' access the search items, also i find it strange that I can access you tube but can't access internet thru safari??
Couple of things you could try : clearing your Safari cache (Settings > Safari > Clear Cache and also try Clear History). You could also try a reset : press and hold both the sleep and home buttons for about 10 seconds, after which the Apple logo should appear - you won't lose any content, it's the iPad equivalent of a reboot.

My phone seems to have died as the screen stays black. However, it appears on my computer when I plug it in for updates. Is the phone broke or is there a simple solution? Thanks.
See Here for > Frozen or unresponsive iPhone
Try this First... No Data will be Lost...
Press and Hold the Sleep/Wake Button and the Home Button at the Same Time...
Wait for the Apple logo to Appear...
Usually takes about 15 - 20 Seconds... ( But can take Longer...)
Release the Buttons...
