G5 stuck at start up then turns off

Any help here appreciated. Turn on my G5, chimes, apple appears, stays stuck with spinning boot up icon and then shuts down. Any ideas as to where to start?? Or should I just take it in? Read something about Pram battery, but have no idea as to where to even look for it.

Yeah, I'm getting the same thing with my (old) Dual 2.0 here! Mine started randomly shutting off without warning. So I took it to the Apple store and they replaced the the power unit, which took they did at no cost! I got it back and now there's no start-up chime, just the logo and spinning gear for a few seconds then it turns off. After multiple calls to apple I was convinced that I was insane. I haven't heard a good explanation as to why this is other than "It's an old machine"!
I have a really old Mac G4 400 that has been on, in my garage for at least 4 years now and has never had any problems, even in the intense Texas heat, so it seems that "Planned Obsolescence" and greed are the culprit here. I guess it's time to pony up and buy a new one for double the price. Who says capitalism doesn't work!
I am an artist that has been using macs for 25 years and apple has clearly been blinded by the profit of pop culture. Which is fine if that is where they want to take the company, as a stockholder I don't have a problem with that. However when quality begins to suffer we're all screwed!

  • Starts and then turns off!

Ok so my Macbook will start up I see the apple and then it turns off before it loads, I've tried resetting the PRAM the SMC and the ctrlapplepowerbutton and noen of i works, I hold down Option and I can choose to boot from CD or windows but if i click that it shuts down. The only way the computer stays on is in Target Mode. Anyone know what I can do. My warranty is up and i can't afford to have them just look at it just yet.
    Thanks

I know my Mac is old, but it works just fine. It's just that even though the battery is full, and all the indicators tell me it is, if the power cord happens to fall off (it's the magnetic one), the whole Mac dies suddenly, doesn't save anything that's open at the time and requires a hard boot to get going again, and only if the cord is plugged. I'm assuming my battery is old anyway, as before this started, it hadn't held the charge for more than an hour. Am I better off replacing the entire machine or replacing the battery and cord and hope that works?

  • Shows error message when starting up, then turns off

Hi, my ipod shows the apple when I restart it, then shows the folder with the exclamation point then shuts off. Also, the computer won't recognize it. Since it doesn't show up on the iTunes or the Finder, is there anything I can do?
    Thanks.

Since this is over a week old, I assume you've got the problem sorted out.

  • Airport Disk starts and then turns off

We see this problem occasionally and I have no idea why. I will get up in the morning and even though the Extreme is on, the USB disk that is attached is now off. I then push the button on the drive (a WD 500GB MyBook) and it starts to spin up and then shuts itself down again after a few seconds. It never mounts or anything anywhere.
Now if I take that same USB disk connected locally through USB, then everything is fine. Usually an Airport Extreme reboot fixes this, but it is annoying in general. Is there anyway to fix this?
    Thanks

  • Mac book starts to boot, then turns off

I have Mac Book Pro (13", Yr2011) which will not boot.    It has a 1TB HD which has been partitioned for Mt Lion (primary) and Snow Leopard.  The computer has worked fine in this configuration.    For about 6 wks, the computer was not used and apparently the battery charge depleted to zero.    When an attempt was made to use the computer with battery only, the screen was just light gray with a circular wait icon.    After several minutes with no change, the battery was noted to be discharged.   A charger was connected, but there was no change in the screen.   The computer was then turned off and left to fully charge.   On first attempt to turn on, the computer did come to life.   However, when attempting to Update software, it displayed No Internect connection - even though it was connected by ethernet.     The computer was power cycled, however the screen then again only showed light gray with wait icon.    Now when attempting to boot, the screen shows light gray, circular wait icon & horizontal bar graph indicating something is loading.   After about several minutes, the bar graph fills & disappears, however, the screen remains light gray with wait icon - indefinitely.    On a few attempts, the computer and screen simply turned off after about 30secs.
If I hold the Option key while powering on, then the Mac does boot ok to Snow Leopard.   Apparently, the Mt Lion side of the HD was corrupted during the low battery boot appempt.   The last time I backup MtLion was several months ago, so if I prefer not to reformat and reload from scratch.
Since the Mac did boot up once, I'm wondering if there is a way to recover without having to reformat and start again.
    Don

Tough without the Install disc, but some things to try...
Does it boot to Single User Mode, CMD+s keys at bootup, if so try...
    /sbin/fsck -fy
Repeat until it shows no errors fixed.
(Space between fsck AND -fy important).

Booting From An OS X Installer Disc
      1. Insert OS X Installer Disc into the optical drive.
      2. Restart the computer.
      3. Immediately after the chime press and hold down the "C" key.
      4. Release the key when the spinning gear below the dark gray Apple
          logo appears.
      5. Wait for installer to finish loading.

  • HT201210 My iPod starts to turn on , then it will go white then turn off, then on and repeat.. If I do these steps, will it help ?

    Just questioning this.
It says to update software , so I do but once it finishes updating it turns black and turns on with the picture saying I must connect to iTunes.. I tried doing that but for some reason iTunes kept popping up saying that it was in recovery mode and I need to fix it.. so I clicked the button saying restore and 2 times it said it couldn't do it. but the third time it did and once it updated my iPod screen went completely black.. then it turned on as if it was starting up, and it stayed like that for about 5 minutes.. then the screen would flash, turn off, then start up again. It keeps repeating this until my batttery is flat and by that time it tells me to plug it in to a power source. I plug it into the power source hoping it would fix it but it doesn't...once its recharged it starts up the whole, coming on , screen going white, then turning off again and so on. I only just bought my iPod 2 weeks ago so I don't know whats wrong... HELP?
    Cheers,
    Chelsea

    Try:
    - iOS: Not responding or does not turn on
    - Also try DFU mode after try recovery mode
How to put iPod touch / iPhone into DFU mode « Karthik's scribblings
    - If not successful and you can't fully turn the iPod fully off, let the battery fully drain. After charging for an least an hour try the above again.
    - If still not successful that indicates a hardware problem and an appointment at the Genius Bar of an Apple store is in order.

  • IPhone 5 won't stay on after being charged. It is stuck at the apple logo then turns off after 30 second.

The phone has been fully charged, software OS 8.1.1 lots of storage and fully operational. Any ideas.

I understand what you are trying to say, but the device is not fully operational, or you wouldn't be here. Does the device go to logo, then turn off, then go to logo again? If not, then you need to first try a reset. Hold the sleep/wake and home buttons together until you see the Apple logo and then release. If that does not help, then restore from backup. If the restore from backup is not successful, then restore as new, not from a backup. If the restore from new is not successful, then make an appointment at the Genius Bar of the nearest Apple store or Authorized Apple Service provider, depending on your location and have the hardware checked. You might also want to take a look at this link and see if your iPhone 5 qualifies for the battery replacement program.  https://www.apple.com/support/iphone5-battery/  Go to that site and enter your serial number. • IPhone 4 screen flickering then turning off and when i try to turn it back on it either works or I get a white or purple screen. When i turn it off it doesn't turn back one

Ok so this started around a week ago. I got home one afternoon put my phone down went back to it and pressed the home button and it seemed that it turned itself off so I tried turning back on, didn't work so I hooked it up to my laptop tried turning it on again it came on but I got a WHITE screen. So after that I decided to leave it for a bit I went to it after it started working fine...until 4 days later. I was on instagram and all of a sudden the screen starts flickering like crazy and then it turned itself off, I did what i did last time and just left it for a bit it came back on working fine. And then about 2 days ago I was listening to music and the screen froze then started flickering (getting quite annoyed at this stage) and then turned off, this time I tried turning it back on straight away only this time it worked. And that brings us to this morning, i was on facebook and about 5 minutes later it starts flickering and freezing once again and then turned itself off. So i hooked it up to my laptop I then got it to turn on for like 6 seconds then the screen started to dim and turned off. That brings us up to now about 10 minutes ago i tried turning it on, it turned on but I got a PURPLE screen and it just stayed like that until i turned it off. Does anybody have any idea what is going on? I think its the screen itself but i'm probably wrong. All help is appreciated.

I am also having the same problem.. Its too much annoying and its unfortunate nobody at apple support has anyclue of what is happening?
... This is happening almost most of the time keeping my phone down most of the times.

  • How do I turn off the Genius app in App Store. I've gone to Settings/Privacy/Location Services/System Services then swiped Genius for apps 'off''. Also, I've gone to Settings/ITunes and App Stores/Click on AppleID/View Apple ID and then turn off Genius.

How do I turn off the Genius app in App Store. I've gone to Settings/Privacy/Location Services/System Services then swiped Genius for apps 'off''. Also, I've gone to Settings/ITunes and App Stores/Click on AppleID/View Apple ID and then turn off Genius. Still nothing has worked. I'm still stuck with Genius offering the same apps to me. Mind you, once I click on the App Store there is nothing I can do but swipe left and right. There's absolutely nothing at the bottom of the screen like a features tab, nothing. There is, however, a categories button at the top, but that's it. Irrelevant.

FWIW, I just got off the phone with Apple technical support about this.  I use Genuis for creating playlists, so I don't want to disable it, but Apple support confirmed that there is no way to avoid syncing Genius data without disabling Genius altogether.  I'd read somewhere else that subscribing to iTunes Match might allow you to avoid this, but that is NOT the case, as I've confirmed, and Apple support has confirmed.  For me, it routinely syncs thousands genius of items, so I have to allow a lot of time for my manual syncs.

  • 8500 Starts up but turns off quickly

    Hi all
I have a 8500 Mac that just starts and turn off as soon after pressing the power on the keyboard. I have tryed the power button on the Mac tower (in the front) just in case it would be a keyboard problem but still does the same thing. The thing it does is that it turns on the power light turns off and sometimes it may power on to the chime and then turn off and I can press the power buttun up to 5 times before it stays on and boots normaly and the way I see it, it looks like it's getting worse every week. I did change the pram battery with a good 3.6v (the other was just 3.4v) and it worked good and stoped doing this problem but now it's doing it again and I even did a MB reset but it didn't last and the problem came back. What could it be doing this problem? Can it be my PS is slowly dyeing? Any help with this would be very much apreciated!!!!!
    Thanks!!!

I vote for a few shots of compressed air -- but not in the house! "
Ah, yes. I still get "wifely reminders" of the day I blew the crud out of my Beige MT while it was sitting on the kitchen table. Not pretty. I had no idea there were so many dust bunny refuges inside a computer case.
I bought several natural bristle pastry brushes with wood handles for cleaning sensitive surfaces. Beware of brushes with plastic handles and/or synthetic bristles.
