G5 ticking noise

ok i know this has probably been covered but...
on my g5 (oem ATI radeon 9600 pro 64mb) it seems like maybe it's my video card making a ticking noise when scrolling with the mouse or doing other actions affecting the GUI. i can 100% reproduce the noise when using coverflow in iTunes and scrolling through the album art. i can 100% kill the ticking noise by launching the latest retail ATI installer (which will supposedly do nothing for Tiger users) and just leaving it on the install screen without actually installing it.
What The F*?
should i just leave the installer launched all the time? i guess it's less annoying than hearing that stupid ticking noise out of the back of the g5. knowing that it's possible to kill the sound with a workaround like this makes me think there should be a simple fix. and please don't anyone mention CHUD.

that shoulda been "actually", for some reason i have no editing privileges...
i can also recreate the sound (actually it's a slightly different sound) by using iPhoto in Fullscreen mode and using the arrow keys to advance the images. again the sound is gone if i have the ATI installer launched and set to the "install" screen without actually pressing install.

Macbook not booting, faint ticking noise?

Hi there, I'm hoping you guys can give me a few pointers here. I have a mid 2007 black 13" Macbook that I have been having problems with. There have been two previous issues which may or may not be related.
Over the last three years, this Macbook has eaten through five HDD's. After finally getting fed up of this, I wondered if perhaps somehow I was to blame, maybe without realising I was putting it down on the desk a bit too hard or something, so when the most recent failure came, (approx six months ago) I bit the bullet and bought myself an SSD and all now seems to be well on the storage front.
Around the same time as the first HDD failure, came random shutdowns, without warning, what appeared to be complete power failures. I also noticed the X symbok in the battery indicator. These initially were fairly frequent but eventually subsided, along with the X symbol, but always seemed to rear up again, in times a heavy use, and were more often than not followed by HDD failure.
Now, the current issue is that yesterday, I started experiencing these power failures again, hoping to myself, I turned the machine back on. Upon logging in, the fan spun up to max, so, checking activity monitor, I found that spotlight indexing, was taking up 148%CPU and this seemed to be the cause of the shutdowns.
I left the machine to cool down for a few hours, booted it up, let spotlight finish indexing, and all was well for about 3 hours. Then came another shutdown.
This time, there was a reluctance to boot. The DVD drive made its usual noise, the sleep light glowed on, and then everything died. I tried again, same result, I tried a third time, and was greeted with the all to familiar, 'no boot media' icon (Folder with ?? flashing). Frustrated at the possible death of my SSD I turned the machine off and let it be.
Later on, I gave it one last try, hoping beyonnd hope, and lo and behold, it booted with no problem. When I logged in, I noticed the 'X' in the battery indicator once more, and spotlight started indexing again, fearing this would cause more shutdowns, I temporarily disabled indexing via terminal. All was well for a couple of hours, I turned my machine off, and went to bed.
I came down this morning, tried to turn on my Macbook, nothing. Tried again, still nothing. magsafe is plugged in w/ green light, battery shows full charge with or without magsafe plugged in, then I heard a faint ticking noise from the machine, on the logic board somewhere while the power button was pressed. it's somewhere around the 'W' on the keyboard. I have read that it could possibly be a shorted inductor on the logic board. Is there any chance it could be something a little more replaceable?
I'm hoping against hope here, as if it is the logic board, it may be time to retire the old beasty.

I was indeed looking into getting a mainboard for my old MacBook. I found a place where I was told, they will order it and replace it for me... the 'piece' never came to its destination ... after being almost 4months without computer, I decided to make the plunge and got a new one. After thinking, even if you found a 'reclaimed one' it may solve your problem just temporarly. If I were you, I would rather make a downpayment and get a financing on a new machine - you will be good to go for at least 6 or 7years again (with the new technology). Now, if you do not want to 'loose your money' you may wanna consider to resell your Device after a 1y1/2 or 2year, which permits you to get money back and stay 'in' the iDevices.

TS1382 my ipod classic is making weird ticking noises

My ipod classic keeps turning on and off by itself, and is making weird ticking noises. What do I do!?

The ticking noise is the sound of the hard drive being started up and the stopped. This is normal.
What do you mean by "turning on and off by itself"? Do you mean the ticking noises (which is normal) or do you mean the display turns on and off, or do you mean the music turns on and off?

Random tick noise on left hand side

I have a MacBook Pro that was purchased a bit earlier than the latest models today. I seem to have a random -low but audible- and consistent ticking noise on the left side of the laptop that:
1- Seems to show varying degrees of loudness if the laptop is picked up and moved a bit
2- If it is not happening, picking up the laptop and moving it up slightly seems to bring it to life
3- Starts and stops very randomly but actually happens rarely
Do you think that this is something to worry about? I am not sure if I can replicate it if/when I take the laptop to the Apple store.

I would think that any of Apple's stores would look at the product. For example, I bought my Macbook from Amazon.com, and I brought it in to an Apple Store to look at. They said they would repair the problem if needed, but if I needed a replacement, to go to Amazon.com. However, they did look at it and did offer a repair.
If I bought directly from Apple, they would have repaired or replaced.
I don't know if that policy is standard even across countries, but it would make sense. I would setup an appointment with a Genius in an Apple Store to minimize the wait.

I figure it couldn't hurt to go to your local Apple store or perhaps give them a call and ask. I would be surprised if they give you any hassle, but if they do you can then go to the store you bought it from.

It's a spring-loaded grounding contact between the top case/chassis and the bottom pan of the machine. When you press, it scratches against the inside of the bottom pan and makes the sound. It's completely harmless and doesn't indicate that anything is wrong, but it can be slightly annoying. A visit to a Genius Bar may result in quieting it partially or completely.

Lenovo Thinkpad Edge S430 ticking noise

Hi all,
My Lenovo Thinkpad Edge S430 has started making some ticking noise coming from the left corner of the laptop. If any video is on sometimes the voice disappears for a few seconds after the intensified ticking. Slightly pressing down the speakers helps stopping the noise for a short while. Any idea what the issues could be and how I could solve them?

All I can say is that it's an error in the marketing material.
I'm 100% certain that this feature does not exist on any ThinkPad Edge system, including your S430. There is not any possibility to add this feature because the hardware that makes it possible does not exist on ThinkPad Edge. It's not a case of providing some new software or BIOS to enable the feature.
If this is a feature that you require, and you bought your S430 based on this faulty marketing material, I suggest that you call the sales support phone number in your country and ask them how they want to handle it. I'm very sorry for this trouble caused by wrong marketing material.

My iPod is making weird ticking noises

I bought a new 30GB iPod (video)about a week ago. Everything works but it seems to delay quite often, especially when changing songs. Sometimes it just won't switch songs at all when I click the next or previous button. Also, you can occasionally hear strange ticking noises.. like the inside of a clock or the sound a computer makes when its trying to do a lot at once. This happens when scrolling, changing songs, etc. I'm just wondering if this is normal or if any other owners of this iPod have experienced it. Because my iPod is new I want to figure this out and see if I should call and try to get a new one to avoid further problems in the future. Thanks for your help

Yeah, this noise is made by the head of the hard
drive which switches from one position to the other
when you change tracks.
Don't worry, it's perfectly normal for an iPod with a
hard disk.
hmm....not exactly.
i got my ipod replaced twice in the same night b/c of this issue. the apple genius took it in the back room and moved it left to right a few times while it was being restored and he noticed the "grind-like" noises. he came back to me and said it definitely wasn't normal && finally swapped it out with one without the strange noises.
i believe apple uses 2 different types of hard drives in their ipods, one of which make the weird noises.
so, it's a faulty ipod....get it replaced before your 14 days are up!!

Help! My iPod is making a ticking noise

A few weeks ago my iPod froze and started making a ticking noise and it eventually turned itself off. I've tried everything in the support section, but my iPod does not respond to any of it. As soon as it is on (ie. the apple logo appears), the noise starts, I try the repair suggestions, to which it doesn't respond, the sad iPod icon comes up and then it shuts itself off.

Still can't see your iPod?
Several things could keep iPod from appearing in iTunes or in the Desktop/Finder when you connect it to your PC/Mac. The most likely causes are listed below in logical order. Check each one starting from the top of the list to see if that is what's keeping iPod from appearing.
3. Try to wait 30 minutes while iPod is charging.
4. Try another known-good FireWire or USB through Dock Connector cable.
5. Try another known-good FireWire or USB port on your computer .
6. Try to disconnect all devices from your computer's FireWire and USB ports.
7. Windows users having trouble with their iPods should locate a Mac user. We've found that in many cases when an iPod won't show up on a PC that it will show up on the Mac. Then it can be restored. When the PC user returns to his computer the iPod will be recognized by the PC, reformatted for the PC, and usable again. BTW, it works in reverse too. A Mac user often can get his iPod back by connecting it to a PC and restoring it.
8. Try to do a Erase (Disk Utility) on a Mac computer or a reformat with a PC (Disk Management tool) but ensure you choose the right Drive (your iPod not your Hard Disk of your computer).
9. Try to run the iPod in “Diagnostic mode” . which can be accessed by pushing the “hold” switch into the “on” position and then “off” (into the original position). Then press the following buttons in the following order: “menu” plus “select” (centre button) then press “reverse” plus “select”. This will take you to the hidden diagnostic mode screen menu. It may take a few trials and pressing the buttons in the right way for this to work, so be patient and keep trying if you have to. The diagnostic mode will give you 7 choices which are: Memory, IO, Power, Status, SysCfg, Diskmode, and Reset. Don’t bother trying “reset” because in my case it didn’t work it just took me back to the same problem. Instead, choose “diskmode”, after which you should get an odd looking “ok to disconnect” sign on the iPod screen.
If one of the above step helps to get your iPod to be recognized with your computer, do a Restore.
But, if none of these steps address the issue, your iPod may need to be repaired. You can arrange for service at the iPod Service Website.

How to remove ticking noise and doing audio effects?

I have a snippet of code I got for generating delay effects. After editing the appropriate things, I ran the application. It produces delays but (if i hear it correctly), the delayed sounds do not fade. It sounds like a mix of sounds. Does it depend on feedback? And there's this ticking noise accompanying the output. I just want to know how "ticking sounds" are produced (and probably how to remove them) and how to produce a correct delay.Here's my program.

But I still get the continuous ticking sound but now I hear the sound output which somehow produces an echo.
The double[] samples has a length of 512 then I convert it to bytes before writing to the SourceDataLine. Any ideas?

Mysterious ticking noise comming from what appears to be fan

Ok, so I own a MacBook Pro 13" and I've had it for maybe a little under 6 months. Yesterday, I discovered a mysterious ticking noise comming from the upper-left bottom of the MacBook. I presume it is coming from the fan, as right now, my CPU temperature ifs 142F and the fan is running at 000rpm. Running Apple Diagnostics confirms my suspicions as it comes up with an error that ends in Exhaust, which I believe is the fan.
I have tried resetting the SMC with the SHIFT-Control-Option-Power combination with no success.
I have scheduled an appointment at the Genius Bar on monday but I was wondering if there are any known solutions at the mean time.

What was the error message exactly ? If it's the fan motor then it would show MTR, if it's a temperature sensor error it would show SNS.
The fact that fan isn't running implies the motor has failed and you're right to get that fixed a.s.a.p.

Clicking or ticking noise?

I am running a G4 1GHz Power Pc with 768Mb DDR SDRAM. I have just upgraded to run 10.4 Tiger. My machine has developed a clicking or ticking noise which I am guessing is related to the spinning of the hard disk drive. It is'nt apparent straight away on start up but develops after 5 mins or so? Can anybody help????

If it is the hard drive it sounds like a "hunt error". Whatever it is you should back up your data ASAP since noises like that coming from your hard drive can only signal something bad. Usually the end of your drive.

Rapid ticking noise

There's a somewhat rapid scratchy ticking noise (maybe 2-4 beats per second) coming from underneath the upper left part of the keyboard. It becomes faster and louder during periods of activity. Anyone know of the cause or remedy?

The hard drive in your computer is to the right of the trackpad, so that's probably not what we're hearing.
Is your fan functioning properly? That's the only other moving part that comes to mind.

Strange ticking noise

I have this happen twice to my ist gen Iphone 8GB. The phone crashes because of some app and then starts emitting a ticking noise like a clock. This noise seems to come from the inside. Only stops when the phone is switched off. The first instance occurred some months back and the 2nd one yesterday.
After restarting the phone works normally. Anyone know what this is about?

Cannot claim the warranty. I was hoping, somebody else might have encountered a similar problem and have an insight into what the problem was related to. Whether it is a hardware issue or something less worrisome. The phone is running fine now, but if it is something serious hardware related problem, will have to do something about it.

My MacBook Air shut down suddenly and is making a loud ticking noise.

I was working on my laptop then suddenly the screen went black (no shutdown screen or noise appeared) and it has now begun to make a loud ticking noise similar to a clock. It won't come back on and none of the keys are illuminated as they were previously. Any suggestions?

I would strongly suspect a failed hard drive. Take it in to an Apple Centre for a free diagnostic.
