G5 tower operate with no antenna?

I bought a used dual processor G5 and recently installed an airport extreme card. I did not, however, have the external T antenna. I tried the airport card anyway and for some reason the computer showed full reception, despite not having an antenna. It recognized my wireless network and I was able to login, BUT I cannot actually communicate with the internet and I cannot access my router by typing in the router address in my browser window. I can do both of these with my powerbooks. My question is: is the inability to connect to the internet most likely due to me not having an antenna or is there some other software issue? I tried troubleshooting the software configuration already, but maybe I'm missing something. If it shows full signal strength, do I still need to get an antenna?
Thanks.
Ben

BennyM-
Interesting. I haven't heard of folks having good signal strength without an antenna on a G5 unless the router was sitting right next to it. I think you need to get an antenna.
Are you able to access the internet via plugging a cable between the Mac's ethernet connection and the router?

To determine the required height of an antenna tower over a hypothetically flat, spherical Earth, it's necessary to calculate the effect of the Earth's curvature, and then add a distance equal to 60% of the radius of the First Fresnel Zone. The table below shows the result of these calculations. Values have been rounded up to the nearest foot.
Line of Sight Distance Between Antenna Towers
Height of Tower to Avoid Flat Earth Curvature
Tower Height Required Over Tallest Obstacle In Line-of-Sight to Provide
    60% Fresnel Zone Clearance

It can be seen in the table above that a wireless link between two points separated by 26 miles would require an antenna tower with a minimum height of 103 feet for an 802.11b/g radio and 95 feet for an 802.11a radio. In practice the heights would typically be 20 feet higher, or more. This is because the Earth is not smooth and flat and the tower height must be raised to compensate for buildings, trees, hills, or other obstacles. For example, in a suburban setting, with houses and small offices, it may be necessary to add 20 to 40 feet to the tower height to get over the homes, offices, and trees that would be in the line-of-sight between the two towers.

  • T520 won't operate with Droid Razr M Hotspot

I have tried a Click Away computer repair, Verizon and Motorola support but to no avail.
My T520 will not operate with my Droid Razr M hotspot.  The hotspot works with other computers.  The
T520 works with other hotspots.  With the Droid Razr M, the T520 connects , sometimes has internet access for a short while, then no internet access.  Most times it is no internet access from the start but the connection is made.
I have upgraded the driver for the Realtek 1x1 11b/g/n Wireless LAN PCI Express Half Mini Card, no change.
My other computer is an Ideapad Y550.  The hotpsot works fine with this.  I have no problem with my home Wifi
operating with the T520 either.  I have spent hours by myself and with others and have no other ideas. HELP!!
Click Away - could get other cell phone Wifi to connect with T520.  They thought the Droid Razr M was rejecting the
connection to the T520 due to a MAC ID flagged as bad by the phone.  Explained this to Verizon but they didn't pursue this.
Verizon - Opened a ticket to look into it and after a week still had no response. Customer agent that answered my call to follow up on open ticket said their network people didn't find anything operating incorrectly, thus no call.  Called 611 and phone person tried clearing cache and then resetting different settings to see if could get connection.
Motorola - tried extensively to test different setups, took over control of phone and did a lot I didn't follow,  ended running through different specified Broadcast channels ( rather than auto) to see
if that would allow internet access.  Their conclusion is that T520 is an incompatibility with the phone.

You can't. iPad Bluetooth does not support it.

  • An AP500 with internal antennas?

Is there any chance that an AP500 might be developed with internal antennas?
I have at least one deployment where the AP541N might have been seriously considered, except for its external antennas, which for that site are too vulnerable... of being moved, tampered, etc.
So in that case the AP1142 with its internal antennas and smaller footprint, is a better fit.  But the 1142 is a lot more expensive, doesn't do clustering, etc.
If a new model of AP500 were developed to fit into the casing of an AP1140 that would be, for some customers, quite an enticing product!
But I'm not holding my breath... it seems Cisco made a decision to use only external antennas with these.

    Rich,
Thank you for your feedback, its great to hear from end-users about how we can make our product lines fit your needs better. These boards are HIGHLY visible to Cisco. Therefore, I'm sure your concerns will be heard and addressed accordingly.

You could really do with more RAM in your machine. However, why not download the free 30 day trial version and see for your self.

How far are you trying to extend the antennas? Those will work to reduce the attenuation if trying to extend the placement of the antennas. Basically they are LMR cables.

  • 3502p AccessPoint support MESH and Point-to-Point Wireless Bridging with Outdoor Antennas??

I need to know if 3502p with outdoor antennas supports Point-to-Point Wireless Bridging??

The 3502p is only used for arenas and or stadiums. These are different units than the 3500's and 3600's. So no they can't be.
You can use Cisco Aironet 1400 Series Wireless Bridge for a wireless link between two buildings (1km) to extend your LAN. For more detail you can go through the below link.

    Hi Guys.
Im deciding on the best mounting location and height to mount a aironet 1131AG Access point with intergrated antenna. Can anyone tell me the beam spread/angle that comes from these access points ?

    Hi Jason,
    Just to add a note to the good info from Andrew. The Radiation pattern for the 1131 is shown nicely in the doc (towards the very end);

  • Qosmio F60-L10 - How to configure tv tuner with integrated antenna?

    good evening,
i have a notebook toshiba qosmio f60 ,i had read your answer about tv tuner.
my question is : how to configure tv tuner with integrated antenna? thanks

    Hi 3171954,
I think Paolo30 is right. Qosmio F60 is equipped with internal DVB-T but in some cases you need an external antenna to pick up the low signal. In most cases only in large citys you dont need an external antenna. If you live on the fringe of the city, normally a cable is needed.
Anyway, do you mean an external antenna or external DVB-T receiver (USB stick)?
Normally Windows media center should recognize the internal DVB-T tuner. Is it listed in device manager? Did you update the driver?

Yes, You can use the 1310 device and configure it as a AP and connect it to your Wireless laptop. The Cisco Aironet 1300 Series Outdoor Access Point/Bridge is a flexible platform with the capability of access point, bridge, and workgroup bridge functionality.

  • Mifi 5510L increase signal strength with an antenna?

Purchased a 5510L to use in a rural area.(north central Louisiana) Device stays in home with a tin roof, signal is terrible (-98) if I want to ATTEMPT to increase signal can anyone suggest hardware to purchase? I don't see an external antenna port on this device so I'm not sure what I can use to help boost, if anything will help.

For Jetpacks that do not come with an antenna port users must purchase what is known as a "cradle".  Cradles are like a nearfield wireless technology that allows you to convert the reception from a wired external antenna to the cradle where the Jetpack normally rests.
Check out Wilson Electronics for the current options.  Wilson also offers a variety of indoor and outdoor booster solutions such as amplifiers and antennas that can connect to the cradle.

  • Does the 1200 aironet come with an antenna?

does the 1200 aironet come with an antenna?

You can indeed. However the keep in my that the antenna needs to have the proper connector RP-TNC.. And also keep in mind the 7 dbi is a stong antenna. At full ap power you will be blasting just over 400mW..
