G5 Video card upgrade to use PSCS4?

I have a G5 a Dual 2.0 GHz PowerPC with four RAM slots, and a ATI Radeon 9600 card. I just upgraded to PSCS4 Standard, and want to take advantage of the OpenGL technology. I'm having trouble finding the PPC nVidia 7800 256MB tested by Adobe. Is there any other video cards suggestions or a source to find the PPC nVidia 7800 256MB?
Thanks...

I'm using a 2003 G5 with a Radeon 9650 and have no problems using the optional AllowOldGPUS.plugin.
Your mileage may vary but it might tide you over until you can upgrade.

  • DVI & ADC video card upgrade???

What can I get to replace the stock 64mb AGP card (at least I think it is) in my MDD Dual 1.42 machine. I currently run two Acrylic Cinema Displays, a 20" via DVI and a 17" via ADC...
Is ADC going to limit my options? If so, I can use a second ADC-DVI for the 17" monitor.
    Any help would be great.
    Thanx

Okay, so it sounds like I should "dump" the ADC idea.
    Then an I looking for a card with 2-DVI or 1-DVI and 1-VGA ???
I've followed several of your discussions, but still need a little help with the Video Card upgrade education. Flashed cards kind of scare me, but are they okay to use? I don't know if I could tell the difference anyway. Asking a seller on eBay if it is in most cases won't get you anywhere either.
You've talked about the 7800gs card. Any others I could consider? I've read that some cards don't work in a FW800 MDD machine.

  • Mac pro 8 core 3.1 randomly freezes after video card upgrade

    Hi,
I just installed an ATI 5770 as a video card upgrade, plugged my new LED cinema display 27 and everything seems to work fine.
Sometimes though, while working with Aperture I noticed the Mac Pro just freezes, although the mouse works, I cannot do anything and I'm forced to press and hold the power button for a reboot.
This happended randomly 5 or 6 times in a couple of weeks and only while working with Aperture.
Any thoughts? Anyone having the same issue?
    Thanks for your reply.
    Guido

    Running Lion or SL?
Tried holding Shift key down and do a safe boot after those freezes.
Use Disk Utility from another boot media to repair your drive.
Do you have enough RAM? is Aperture library on non-boot drive? Does it have 30% or more free? more is better. Same for the boot drive which sholdk be small and 50% free.
Corrupt library. Corrupt preferences (if there were none before, there likely are now after those hard restarts, to data files and to the disk directories).

  • EMac Video Card Upgrade?????

Is it Possible?? or am i screw with this p.o.s. 32Meg card
I cant do video with this nonsense

Not only is the short answer no, but the long answer is no as well. :-p
And what do you mean by 'cant do video'? If you mean video EDITING, it works perfectly well. There is nothing that the eMac can't do that a top-of-the-line G5 can do with regards to consumer video editing. It might not run Motion or Shake very well, but that has little to do with the video card. I use iMovie and iDVD weekly without problem.
If you mean video GAMES, then yes, it's a little underpowered. (But, I play HALO just fine on it.) But, if you were looking for a serious game machine, the eMac shouldn't have been your choice. (Just like in the PC world, I wouldn't recommend a Dell with built-in video for gaming, I'd recommend something with a dedicated video card. At least the eMac has better 'built-in' video than most low-end PCs; as it's at least a dedicated chip with its own memory, like a PC would have on a card, even if it's a low-end chip, it's still better than Processor-driven video.)
There are a couple companies that make USB or FireWire 'video cards', but they are even more limited than the built-in video.

  • Video Card Upgrades

I'm looking to either upgrade or augment the vid display card in my (admittedly) older G5. It was my severance pay from my previous employer, and I still haven't been able to find a job, so my financial resources are a tad limited at the moment.
I've seen Nvidia Geforce 6600 128mb on Ebay and I was wonder if it's a suitable replacement for the 64mb card I've currently got. ATI is the manufacturer of the existing card.

Seems like you must have an early G5 but not sure which exact model, but one with AGP 8x.
There are a number of threads of others asking for video card upgrades. And there is a great hardware resource and database:

    I think there is/was a 6800 Ultra also.

  • Video Card Upgrade - A general consensus.

I have a 2.8x8 Mac Pro (2008). I want to upgrade the standard 2600. I will be using the new grahpics card only in XP, and change the cables back to the 2600 everytime when under OS X. So my question is:
    1. Can I purchase any video card driver-designed for windows XP and expect it to operate normally, under XP? This is a MASSIVE gray area... hard to find sound information.
    2. Some cards (Radeon HD 4870) are designed for the Mac Pro. These have special boxes that indicate Mac compatiblity, and normal box counterparts for the windows market. The cards themselves are identical in every way. Are the normal boxed counterparts actually identical with regard to OS X driver compatibility?
Couldn't find these answers in concrete on recent posts, so perhaps this can shed light to others wanting to upgrade.
    Thanks,
    Graham

Yes you can buy a video card that is designed for windows and use it in your Mac pro, for windows. I did this for a while with mine. The only 4870 that will work with your Mac pro is the one from apple, or a flashed one from eBay. The GPUS are similar the difference is that the Mac card has a larger ROM and uses EFI instead of bios.

  • Hp mini 210 1010nr video card upgrade

i wanted to upgrade the video card? is this possible? also different people tell me i can upgrade to 2 gigs but others say 4g on the laptop? i also wanted to put windows xp professional on it and not use the windows 7 starter....if anyone has a bit if information please help

    Hi:
2 GB is max on your notebook.
Here is the processor spec direct from Intel. Note the max memory size is 2 GB.
    http://ark.intel.com/products/42503/Intel-Atom-Processor-N450-(512K-Cache-1_66-GHz)
You cannot upgrade the video adapter. It is soldered to the motherboard.
There is only one system board, so there isn't even another motherboard available with better video.
In order to install XP you need to slipstream the SATA AHCI driver.
Read this helpful guide below. Read the Intel section. Then use the guide to slipstream all of the drivers.

And being the nice guy that I am, I have attached the drivers you need to slipstream to get XP installed.

  • Video card upgrade: worthwhile?

I'm about to upgrade my monitor to the Monoprice 27" CrystalPro (same LG panel as Apple's cinema display, just $600 less), and am wondering if I need to upgrade the video card as well, or if I'll see any difference.
The current card is an ATI FirePro V3700. 256MB of memory.  It supports 10-bit per channel color, at resolutions up to 2560x1600.
The monitor is 10-bit color at 2560x1440.
I use Photoshop CS5 and Lightroom 4.5 for photo editing large files (26 MB, 6000x4000 pixels).
The processor is an AMD Phenom II X4 965 at 3.4 GHz and I have 8 GB of RAM installed.
The motherboard only has PCI-E 2.0 expansion slots, so that may limit the upgrade path to the point that it's not worthwhile.
Any advice would be much appreciated!

My system meets the requirements for CS5, though it's no powerhouse.  That's fine, as I'm really just doing minor retouching of photos and prefer to do most of the work in composing with the camera.  I'm almost never using any of the more complex filters or 3D features.
Just trying to figure out if investing in a much more powerful video card is going to give me a noticeable performance increase.    Is it going to load images and refresh changes better?

  • Pavillion P6-2310 video card upgrade

I wish to install a better video card in the p6-2310. I have heard that some models will not accept changes in the video and that the power supply may not have the proper connectors. Can someone clarify if a new video card is possible on this paticular machine and perhaps recommend a video card. I was thinking of something like a GeForce GTX 650 or such.
    Thanks in advance, Larry

Here are the specs for your HP Pavilion p6-2310 Desktop Computer. According to the specs, this model has a PCI Express x16 (Gen 2.0) graphics card slot and a 300 watt power supply. Please measure along the plane of the PCIe x16 slot to determine the available space for a graphics card. The card you need depends on the space you have and the intended use. You will also need to upgrade the power supply to 500 to 600 watts, The Corsair CX500 and CX600 come highly recommended and are known to fit many HP consumer desktop cases.

  • CS5.5 - High CPU usage in Premiere - New Video Card upgrade?

I'm running CS5.5 and I'm getting choppy video while editing in Premiere and did some research on how to fix that like render frequently, set Premiere as 1st priority, kill everything else thats running.  I've done these and it's helped a bit but it still gets choppy.
The computer that I'm running was given a gift and is all I have to deal with currently so w/ that said its a Gateway SX2801-11e which has Vista 7 64 bit, Intel dual core E5700, 3GHz, 640GB hard drive, 6GB memory DDR3.  So I was wondering if upgrading the video card would help out.  But there may be a problem and may be limited... There is a PCI-Express graphics card slot but the case can only fit a half-height card and also against me is the low wattage. Any ideas on what I can do, recomendations?  If it makes any difference, monitor I'm using is a 47" LCD television, 1080p.

    I agree with Harm:
At this point you should save up for an entire new rig. As you can see from the PPBM5 results list, a system based on a Core 2 Quad CPU (unless overclocked heavily and/or equipped with a ton of RAM) cannot beat a system based on a Sandy Bridge dual-core i3-2100 CPU. Core 2 Duo CPUs are even slower than the Core 2 Quad example. And the Pentium E5700? Fuggedaboutit.
And even if you could upgrade the CPU and add a discrete GPU and additional disks, the Gateway is still saddled with a very limited motherboard that does not support RAID and lacks any overclocking provisions at all whatsoever.
In the end, you just have a system that (even after upgrading the RAM to its 8GB maximum and the fastest Nvidia CUDA GPU and adding two additional fast hard drives) is still much, much slower overall than even an i3-2100 system with only 4GB of RAM, let alone a fast i7 system with 16GB or more RAM. Thus, any upgrades that you make to that PC is an almost complete waste of money. (And as I discovered, every single one of the Core 2 Duo systems on the PPBM5 results list took more than 1,000 seconds to complete all of the PPBM5 benckmark tests with MPE turned on.) And even the higher 3GHz clock speed of the E5700 is not high enough to compensate for the deficiencies of the Pentium Dual-Core CPU (less L2 cache than the Core 2 Duo that the Pentium Dual-Core is based on), so that the E5700 is just as slow as, if not slower than, the E6700 systems near the bottom (lowest-ranked, or highest rank number) of the PPBM5 results list.

  • HT203254 video card upgrade

Hi, I am a deejay using the late 2008 aluminium macbook with nvidia geforce 9600m 256MB. My issue is it hangs when mixing videos... is it possible to upgrade this video card and will it help?

  • P7-1050t video card upgrade

I tried replacing my radeon 6450 1gig video card with a geforce 640 2 gig card
Even with Nvidia's support help I could not get past the code 12 error (something about needing to free resources by disabling something else)
I followed all the nvidia's suggestions - deinstall the radeon, ran driver sweep, install the nvidia, run a clean install
Although the Nvidia tech didnt say it was a must i realized myself my power supply may have been the issue so i upgraded from a 250W to a 450W power supply. The new power supply installed with no issues. Note:  also upgraded the 4 gig RAM that came with the machine to 8 gig. Again no issues.
I downgraded a bit and swapped my geforce gt640 with a geforce gt 610 2 gig card.
The machine sees it in the bios and actually mirrored to the second display on the HDMI while in Setup. again though, windows device manager shows the the card in error -  the code 12 resource error
Anyone have a solution? Nvidia swears the card will work  but nothing they suggest fixes the issue

  • G4 QuickSilver Video Card Upgrade Advice

Hi all...I have a G4 QuickSilver 2001 867mHz Mac with its factory nVidia GeForce2 MX card in the stages of dying. It crashes the system when I attempt to boot in regular mode and will only start up in safe mode. I am 99.99% sure it is the video card going. It will occasionally boot in regular mode but the graphics become distorted when any graphic intensive action is taken (e.g., menu pulldown, scrolling, etc.) and will eventually hang or a kernal panic occurs. I have ruled out any software issue.
I would like upgrade the card and maybe venture into the world of Motion at some point after I upgrade the processor. I do video editing on FinalCut and DVD StudioPro also. But as you know, under safe mode, all these programs are useless as well as printing.
My question is: What card would you recommend? I am leaning toward a ATI RADEON 9600 PRO PC & MAC 256MB AGP CARD or better. To be honest, I am totally bewildered by the various cards, etc. out there and don't have a clue as to what is recommended and what my machine can accomodate.
Any help you can give I would greatly appreciate it.
    G4 Quicksilver 2001 867mHz   Mac OS X (10.4)   SCSI Card, GeForce2 MX, Internal Zip, 2 60gb Internal HD, 1 120gb external HD, 1.5gb of RAM

Are you able to boot the Hardware Test Disk that
    came
with your system? The Extended Test does a
    thorough
    test of the video card.
If you buy a replacement card be sure you can
    return
it if it doesn't work in your system I recently
    bought a Radeon 9600 pro PC/Mac 256 Mbyte board
    for
my Quicksilver dual 800. Once it got started it
worked fine, but I had to try various combinations
    of
CRT vs LCD monitors on each port to get it
    started.
Then it would drive any combination. If the
    machine
is put to sleep or shut down, it would have no
display again. After a while I could not get it
    to
start at all. A replacement card and a
    replacement
DVI to ADC adapter have not helped. Everything
still works if I reinstall the original GeForce 2
    MX
Twinview card. I have read about others having
similar problems with Quicksilvers and some ATI
    cards.
I suppose it would have been a good thing to mention
the monitor I am using. I have a Viewsonic Q95
Optiquest 20 inch monitor at the moment. It has, i
believe, a VGA connection to the card. I have heard
stories of such problems. Hopefully, someday, I will
upgrade to a G5 machine or at the least a Cinema
    Display. Thanks for your help
    Al
In response to your first question, I have run Hardware Test Disk, as well as TechTool Pro 4's test also...it always indicates the card is fine.

  • G4 Sawtooth Processor and Video Card upgrades

    Hi there,
I'm heading for a major upgrade on my G4 Sawtooth 500Hz, starting with processor and Video card, not to mention maxing out the RAM slots.
My main applications are Final Cut, After Effects and Photoshop.
I wish I had more money for a dual processor (or even a G5 – sigh!) so I'm looking at the Sonnet Encore/ST G4/1.4GHz Processor versus the PowerLogix G4/1.4GHz 7455A PowerForce55. I've done the benchmark tests at OWC's site and I'm inclined to Sonnet. Anyone have an opinion between these 2, or even if there's another one I should be also considering?
Should I make the effort and go for a dual processor? because of the clear benefits on rendering time (specially for After Effects)?
    Video Cards:
These I think I need more help. Going thru these threads I learned that I should consider the power supply (overheating problems) and that "AGP G4's have either a 208w or a 237w Power supply (PSU)" - I have no idea what I got.
On another thread I read: "as far as I'm aware, there are only two video cards currently available retail that support Tiger's core image/video, the Radeon 9600 and 9800. Unfortunately the 9600 requires a x4 AGP slot, so that just leaves the 9800. It's a powerful card but consequently is fairly expensive and can be noisy due to it's fan."
What is a x4 AGP slot? Do Sawtooths have this?
I'll be upgrading to Tiger soon. Does this mean I can't go for the ATI Radeon 9200?
I'd prefer AGP than PCI cards. What are my real options considering power consumption, OS and performance?
Important: I’d like the video card to run 2 monitors, LCD and/or CRT.
Further upgrades would be SATA controller card and one or two internal SATA drives replacing the ones I got.
    Last but not least:
Instead of all this fuss, should I 'just' get the MacMini 1.66GHz Intel Core Duo????? and later on get a G5 (or whatever it will be called...)?
    PowerMac G4 "Sawtooth" (AGP) 500Mhz, ATI Rage 128Pro, 512MB RAM   Mac OS X (10.3.9)   Internal ATA drives [25GB - 80GB] / External 160GB

I think I may have written what you've quoted. You probably already know, but you don't actually need a Core Image compatible card to use Tiger. As far as I'm aware, few applications currently make use of Core Image and fewer still actually require it (Apple's Aperture and Motion being possible exceptions).
As PB PM mentions, you have a x2 AGP slot and unfortunately there's little middle ground in terms of graphics cards available. The main options are the Radeon 9800 at one end (powerful but relatively expensive, power hungry, hot running and noisy) or perhaps the Radeon 9000 at the other. It's no longer available retail but they appear on eBay occasionally. It's an AGP card, was available in 64MB and 128MB versions and can support two monitors. One slight downside is that it has an ADC connector (alongside the VGA connector), which the Sawtooth logic board doesn't support, but I believe you can still connect an ADC to DVI adapter cable to connect a DVI monitor. It doesn't support Core Image either.

  • PowerMac G5 Quad 2.5 Video Card Upgrade?

I've been trying to upgrade my video card (for Final Cut Pro) in my PowerMac G5 Quad 2.5, and I'm trying to figure out which card(s) would be best for me. (can't get a Mac Pro 'till next year)
I guess I'm right on the cusp of the PCI Express connection. (is that true?)
Can someone point me in the right direction. Latest I was trying for were the Radeon x1900, or one of the 2800/2600 pro mac edition. Not sure, now, which connection is correct, though...
    Thank you for your help!
    joe

Thanks. I'm still trying to make sure my computer is indeed the PCI Express slot.
I can get a Radeon x1900 card (used) that was in a MacPro - but I don't know if that's the same slot either. I thought I read that people HAD put the x1900 cards in the G5 Quad. Would the Mac Pro NOT have a PCI Express slot, therefore this card would not work in my G5 Quad? How can I tell. I got a description from the person selling it - but I can't understand it.
(I also meant to say the other cards I was looking at were the Radeon 9800 Mac and the 9600 Mac - late typing, sorry)
I currently have the 6600 stock video card that came with the computer. Since Final Cut Pro 6 really needs speed (on my MacBook Pro it's struggling a bit), I thought it would be the one thing I could do, since I have 6.5 gigs of ram and plenty of drives and space. I'm tempted to wait, but the need for speed is tough...
    Thanks for all the help.
