G5 video out problem w/ 23" cinema display

Yesterday I moved my G5 and 23" display into another room in my house. When I plugged everything in and turned on the computer, the monitor was not responding. I plugged the 23" display into my powerbook G4 laptop, and it functioned properly as a second monitor. At this point, I ruled out the monitor as the issue.
With the monitor plugged back into the G5 tower again, I restarted the computer, and without seeing anything, I entered my username and password to login. I could tell that the computer was working, but the video out was not. I then used the keystroke to properly shut down the computer.
The next time I restarted it, the display came on, but after about 10 minutes, it froze. I suspect a problem with the video card.
Here's the big question though. I also noticed that the computer gave an error on one of the processors. It could be related, but it may be another issue. I've had the computer since July of 05. Is it too late to buy the apple care service to cover a video card and new processor (potentially), or am I in for a costly repair?

Since ou have moved the machine, as well as disconnected/reconnected the monitor, it is possible the video card has become (at least partially) unseated.
Verify the card is fully and properly seated in the slot, no pins are damaged/bent, that the cable is fully seated, and that the cable did not get pinched/damaged in the process of the move.
(Generally, if you wiggle/jiggle the cable around, and the monitor cuts in/out or changes colors, there could be a broken wire in the cable.)

  • The Video Out Problem...Fixed?

I know Wikipedia can be edited by virtually anyone with membership and an opinion, but I had to know.
It said that an itunes update 1.0.2 fixed the video out problem...does that mean that videos can now be connected to a TV and play on the TV? They fixed that?
I am still ever in the market for the nano, just waiting until the right ammount of money to purchase one. Thanks

I think it is currently working according to this knowledgebase article: http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=300233
That is, for the new Nano, you can use the older iPod Universal Dock (ie the normal one that has been available for a couple of years) together with an iPod composite video cable or an SVideo cable (ie all currently-available stuff you may have already bought for a previous-series video iPod), OR you can use the brand new "Apple Universal Dock" with the brand new Apple Composite AV Cable or with the (new) Apple Component AV Cable, OR you can use one of those brand new Apple AV Cables directly with the Nano (without the new Apple Universal Dock).
What you cannot do is connect an old video cable or accessory, which was expecting to get composite video from the RCA/audio jack on the Nano, because it looks like (on the new Nano and the Classic) the audio out jack is now just for audio out and video is only available via the dock connector on the iPod.

    Hi Ben,
    Welcome to Apple Support Communities.

  • IPad video out problem

    Dear forum users,
I have an iPad with the latest iOS software update, and I am trying to link it with an ACER K11 pico projector (which they advertise to work with iPad).
I am using the Apple video out vga cable, as well as a compatible app like "keynote".
Unfortunately, all I get is a "no signal" message on the projector. The projector works well with other video sources.
I tried it with my iPhone 4 and got the same result.
Any idea what could be the problem?
    Many thanks
    Macphi

Just checking: Did you actually run a presentation? You won't get anything on an external display until you actually start a presentation. VGA out is limited to apps that explicitly support it and even then only in some situations (e.g. the Photos app will only display something once you start a slideshow).

  • Blue screen appears out of sleep on Cinema Display

I find when I wake my Macbook Pro up from sleep while attached to my 23" Cinema Display I get a blue screen for anywhere from 2 to 5 seconds and then my screen. It doesn't cause problems but its just annoying. When just using the Macbook Pro its screen appears immediately.
    Has anyone else noticed this.

Supposedly normal for this to happen when Macbook Pro hooked up to a Cinema Display.

  • IPod Touch 2nd Gen Video Out Problem with Apple Component Cable

I'm trying to get video out working with my iPod touch connected to my TV. Here's the information.
32 GB iPod Touch 2nd Gen
    Apple Universal Dock (current version.)
Apple Component Out cable for iPod (current version that connects with a dock connector.
I've connected the component cables into the component video input on my TV. When I start playing any video (purchased off iTunes store in Standard Def,) I get a scrambled picture that appears to be the video, and no sound. I purchased the TV in South Korea and haven't gotten to test it yet on a TV back in the US. I have my video out settings with wide screen turned off and set to NTSC (South Korea uses NTSC.) I've also tried every setting combination, and switching the cable connections with the same or similar results. Sorry if a similar problem has been posted elsewhere, but after searching, I couldn't find any similar behavior. Any ideas on what might be the cause? I don't have any other component devices to check if the component on the TV is bad.

I've got that same problem: iPod Touch 2nd Gen, Apple Component Cables, and an HD TV.
The funny thing is, the cable works fine with an iPod Classic (160 GB) but not for the iPod Touch. Can anyone explain why that is?

  • IPhone 2G video out problems

    Hi all,
Since updating to 2.1 (via Pwnage) I have been unable to get video out in my iPhone 2G.
I have Apple component AV cables which worked fine on 2.01 with both my TV and the projectors used at University (I use this in my lectures). Upgrading to 2.2 has not fixed the problem.
Annyhoo, once I plug them in I get the dreaded 'This device is not compatible etc...' message and all I get is audio. I have even had this warning when using the cable and the wall plug to recharge.
I have looked through MacTalk and Apple's Support site and several people have been having trouble with 3rd party cables but mine are Apple, came in the nice shiny (expensive) box 'n everything. Apple Support (US) definitely lists this cable as compatible with my iPhone.
Can anyone offer practical advice, or do I have to back to 2.01 to get this to work?

Restore your iPhone to the factory firmware, then try the Apple Component AV Cable. Else, seek elsewhere for assistance, as Apple Discussions is not the place to seek support for hacked/jailbroken iPhones.

  • What is causing a sound problem with new Cinema Display 27 ?

My new 27 Cinema Display intermittently won't play sound when connected to my MB Pro. Restarting the computer doesn't fix it, and all the display audio settings are correct etc. Phoned Apple Support and the fix was to unplug the power from the back of the cinema display to reset the screen controller. This keeps happening - is this a software bug ? Hardware problem ? Is it fixable or something that is a legacy of the 24 inch cinema display problems ? I really like the screen size but don't want a display that I keep having to plug/unplug in order to watch hulu, play itunes etc. Apple won't declare my screen to be defective even though this has happened a few times but can't tell me how to fix the problem either. Am going to send it back for a refund - don't know whether a different display will have the same problem or if this is a generic cinema display defect. Thanks for any insight.

There are threads in this forum and MacRumors where numerous people are having this issue. When I contacted support they had me reload the software update and reset the power. I am encouraging everyone to contact Apple every time it happens so we can get a fix for the problem. It is the general consensus that this is a software issue that can be corrected if we can get Apple to work on it. I agree with you I expect my $1000 monitor to work properly all the time.

  • Mpeg-2 HD video on a 30 inch Cinema Display

    Hello everyone,
I have a 1.6 ghz Power Mac G5 (first revision). I use EyeTV to record HD video in mpeg-2 format, and the playback on the G5 on just a 20 inch widescreen is not good at all, really. Would a video card upgrade help this, and would the playback still be smooth on a 30 inch Apple Cinema Display if the upgraded card supported it? Or is this G5 just not up to it? The current card is the stock GeForce FX 5200.
    Thanks for your help

I have said software (ver.3) with an EyeTV Hybrid. Elgato is pretty clear that PPC macs cannot handle HD:
*+Note: 720p or 1080i HD features require an Intel Core 2 Duo processor. Analog TV recorded and processed by a software encoder; quality depends on processor performance.+* http://elgato.com/elgato/na/mainmenu/products/hybrid09/product3.en.html
You're lucky if you are even recording the show properly. The only playback you'll have on that machine is to export the show to SD / 480p & come back about 8 hours later to watch it.
Any upgrades bought would almost get you a new Mini.

  • FireWire (and USB?) problems with 23" Cinema display

    Hello.
Whenever my G5 wakes from sleep, I seem to have problems with FireWire devices attached to the Cinema Display (and, possibly, the USB ports also). Somehow, it seems that the "wake" signal is not transmitted to them.
    Specifically:
a FireWire hard drive does not spin up (a USB drive connected to the back port does, as does a FW 800 drive also connected to my PowerMac). When I try to access it, then it finally spins up.
An EyeTV 200 device fails to connect (i.e., display TV or record shows) unless the Fi cable is unplugged and reattached.
This happens WHENEVER the Mac sleeps. However, if I attach those two devices directly to my PowerMac, they function just fine, using the same port the Cinema Display is attached to.
I don't have other comparable devices attached to the USB port of the Cinema Display, except (previously) for a Plextor ConvertX DVR (a USB 2 device), which exhibted the same problems as the EyeTV 200, which is why I tried swapping it with the FireWire-based EyeTV (unsuccessfully). So I have some evidence that the USB port has similar problems, but nothing conclusive.

    Hey Scott
You are not alone. I'm beginning to think there is an issue with the power supplies of the 23" displays.
In my case, my computer is set to never sleep, while the display is set to sleep atfter 30 mins or so.
It appears that the computer won't wake up in these cases, but in fact what is happening is that the display won't wake up.
Multiple re-starts are sometimes necessary to get the display up and running again.
While your problem seems slightly different, I think that the two are related in that there is not enough power being delivered from the power supply for the monitor to both your USB and Firewire devices connected to your display.
I don't really have a solution as of yet.... aside from purchasing a new power supply from Apple... But, you are not exactly alone in your misery. Should I run across a fix for this aside from the power supply, I'll be glad to let you know.
Generally after HD's spin down, they usually don't spin up unless they are accessed. If you have any open files on your FW800, that may explain why it does spin up when you wake up your system.
One thing you can try, in the System Prefs, under Energy Saver, uncheck "Put HD's to sleep". This may cause all of them to spin up when you wake your system up.

  • Black Spots/ Smudges/ Dust Problem with Apple Cinema Displays

my 24" cinema display from 2010 developed dust/ stains in the lower left corner of the display after about 1,5 years in use. see the attached picture. the problem is mostly seen in imacs. there is a long thread in the macroumors forum describing this problem and showing a not easy solution.http://forums.macrumors.com/showthread.php?t=1101370. i'm convinced that there is the same problem with some of the ACD like mine. probably the cause oft his problem is the sealing between display and backlight (see the description by oggy in the above linked thread) which allows that circulating air can bring dust between the two panels. it looks really like a design flaw. if you are in guaranty apple will change the panel. without guaranty no chance of help. but even the panel is changed the problem can occur again. but there are some hints that apple is investigating this problem. please post your experiences how apple is handling your case if you have the this problem.

Hi, I have tried shifting them around, and the problem does seem to follow the graphics card, despite all tests indicating they are both working properly. Any other arrangements will cause a grey screen to come down while starting up and say I need to restart the computer.
Changing the slots for the graphic cards, but keeping the display attached in the right place, would allow the computer to turn on but a window would come up saying that they weren't optimally configured (16x or 8x or 4x speeds). The best configuration remains the one I begun with (slots 1 and 4). The computer will only start properly with the display in slot 4, right hand side looking at the back of the display, and only when it's turned on will it allow me to attach the second monitor, again, only in slot 4, to the left side.
The same would work if the card was in slot 1, but it would tell me they weren't configured ideally so I put the card back in slot 4.
At this point, then (I have also just tried resetting the PRAM by pressing cmdoption+PR when restarting, but no changes) should I reconfigure the graphics card? (If yes, how do I do it?)
    Thanks again, Valentina

  • MacBook Video Out problems.

    Hey all.
Bit of an issue regarding my Macbook. It's a 2ghz Duo With ram upgraded to 4gb by myself. For some reason the video out on my Macbook has decided to stop working. Is it possible that it's hardware related? I have tried the following.
1: Bypassing my Onkyo TSR 609 amp straight to TV
2: Lowering resolutions (although 1080i and p was fine)
3: Bootcamping into windows to see if its an OSX issue. (my friends Samsung laptop works just fine through all the various combinations)
    4: Punching it.
Im at a loss now, was working fine, got my new amp and was working fine through that for a week (havent changed any settings on it, and as I said same issues straight to TV which is a 42" Sharp XD1E) and the picture just comes out as multicoloured digital noise but you can just about make out whats on screen. Its a fairly weak connection on the MiniDVI port on laptop itself, It's connected via MiniDVI to DVI/HDMI dongle. I have also swapped out cables. It's not the amp as my PS3 blasts out 1080p with NO issues, please help!

Your Mac runs maintenance in the background for you.
Command + R gives you access to restore, repair, or reformat the drive using OS X Recovery
No idea why that was suggested.
You may have a third party video player installed that's causing an incompatibility issue.
    Check these folders:
    /Library/Internet Plug-Ins/
    /Library/Input Methods/
    /Library/InputManagers/
    /Library/ScriptingAdditions
    ~/Library/Internet Plug-Ins/
    ~/Library/Input Methods/
    ~/Library/InputManagers/
    ~/Library/ScriptingAdditions
The first four locations listed are in the root-level Library on your hard disk, not the user-level Library in your Home folder. The tilde (~) represents your Home folder.
To access the Home folder in OS X Lion or Mountain Lion, open the Finder, hold the Option key, and chooseGo > Library.

  • IPhone video out problem

I have a iPhone compatible composite video out cable. When I select a video to play, it plays (video/audio) on the TV for about 8 seconds then the video quits playing. The iPhone goes back to the video list screen. When I restart the video only audio plays back on the TV. The video plays on the iPhone screen. Anyone have any suggestions?

Do you have the Apple Composite AV Cable? Note that there's a decryption chip in the Apple cable that's required for functionality with the iPhone. 3rd party cables don't work (although they may claim to work, they don't).

  • 7.01 video out problem

I have upgraded to 7.01, and the setup I have used for looking at my video doesn't work anymore.
I use Easy Setup to firewire DV to a DSR-20, whose output is connected by an s-video cable to a Sony 13" Hi-Res monitor. I do get an output, but there is a black rectangle in the display, the same as if I where trying to play a write protected DVD on the Sony.
Is FCP sending out a write protect signal? If so, how can I disable it?

Just wanted to add that I'm having the same issue.
iMovie 7.0 worked fine (and yes, I like it fine -- I would only be upset if Apple had taken iMovie HD away, but of course they didn't so I don't see why the whiners are so ... well, whiny!).
Applied the 7.0.1 update and now iMovie will not launch. Activity Monitor shows that the program grabs and holds the entire second CPU on my C2D MacBook. I waited several minutes for it to work out whatever it was struggling with to no avail. A simple force quit from the dock immediately quit the program and brought the CPUs under control.
Naturally I tried re-applying the update (nothing changed), checking to see if the problem existed with a "fresh" admin account (it did), repairing permissions (nope), restarting (nada), running AppleJack (un-uh) and even applying the update as root (no good).
I'm out of ideas, and a little nervous because I'm teaching a class on this thing on Saturday and can't work with it in its present state. I'm confident Apple will notice the issue and re-issue the update in due course (as they usually do when an update has unintended side effects), but I hope they hurry!
