G5 with leopard 10.5.8 running slowly, attempting to clean install but only have original 10.4.2 discs

My dad has an iMac G5 1.9GHz running 10.5.8 with 2.5GB ram which is running extremely slowly. I want to back up the hard drive and then do a 'clean install' to attempt to fix the issues. However, he only has the original discs for 10.4.2, having upgraded to leopard using my brother-in-law's family upgrade disc.
My question is, if I erase the hard-drive and then install Tiger, will I be able to use Timemachine to access his backups, as they were done using 10.5.8?
And if my brother-in-law no longer has his Leopard upgrade discs will I be able to get a copy?
I don't want to downgrade the machine if there's no way of getting it back up to 10.5.8
Many thanks in advance

Kappy's Personal Suggestions for OS X Maintenance
For disk repairs use Disk Utility.  For situations DU cannot handle the best third-party utilities are: Disk Warrior;  DW only fixes problems with the disk directory, but most disk problems are caused by directory corruption; Disk Warrior 4.x is now Intel Mac compatible. TechTool Pro provides additional repair options including file repair and recovery, system diagnostics, and disk defragmentation.  TechTool Pro 4.5.1 or higher are Intel Mac compatible;  Drive Genius is similar to TechTool Pro in terms of the various repair services provided.  Versions 1.5.1 or later are Intel Mac compatible.
OS X performs certain maintenance functions that are scheduled to occur on a daily, weekly, or monthly period. The maintenance scripts run in the early AM only if the computer is turned on 24/7 (no sleep.) If this isn't the case, then an excellent solution is to download and install a shareware utility such as Macaroni, JAW PseudoAnacron, or Anacron that will automate the maintenance activity regardless of whether the computer is turned off or asleep.  Dependence upon third-party utilities to run the periodic maintenance scripts had been significantly reduced in Tiger and Leopard.  These utilities have limited or no functionality with Snow Leopard and should not be installed.
OS X automatically defragments files less than 20 MBs in size, so unless you have a disk full of very large files there's little need for defragmenting the hard drive. As for virus protection there are few if any such animals affecting OS X. You can protect the computer easily using the freeware Open Source virus protection software ClamXAV. Personally I would avoid most commercial anti-virus software because of their potential for causing problems.
I would also recommend downloading the shareware utility TinkerTool System that you can use for periodic maintenance such as removing old logfiles and archives, clearing caches, etc.  Other utilities are also available such as Onyx, Leopard Cache Cleaner, CockTail, and Xupport, for example.
For emergency repairs install the freeware utility Applejack.  If you cannot start up in OS X, you may be able to start in single-user mode from which you can run Applejack to do a whole set of repair and maintenance routines from the commandline.  Note that AppleJack 1.5 is required for Leopard. AppleJack 1.6 is compatible with Snow Leopard.
When you install any new system software or updates be sure to repair the hard drive and permissions beforehand. I also recommend booting into safe mode before doing system software updates.
Get an external Firewire drive at least equal in size to the internal hard drive and make (and maintain) a bootable clone/backup. You can make a bootable clone using the Restore option of Disk Utility. You can also make and maintain clones with good backup software. My personal recommendations are (order is not significant):
Backuplist
Carbon Copy Cloner
Data Backup
Deja Vu
iBackup
JaBack
Silver Keeper
MimMac
Retrospect
Super Flexible File Synchronizer
SuperDuper!
Synchronize Pro! X
SyncTwoFolders
Synk Pro
Synk Standard
Tri-Backup

You will need Snow Leopard to install Lion unless you buy it on the USB drive from the Apple Store. You may wish to think about buying a Snow Leopard disc in case you wish, like some others, to return to Snow Leopard if Lion is not suitable for you. I personally saw the advantage of paying for SL and downloading Lion which was about the same cost as just buying the Lion USB installer.

Any other suggestions out there folks?

On Oracle Metalink site, there are many documents which says that Oracle 32 bit software works on 32 bits OS and 64 bits software works on 64 bits OS. Official support is only in those combination....
So there is no good way to help you in your case-XE is 32 bit application with hard codded compiled libraries which most of them would not work on 64 bit OS.

Issue with ARD 3.0 not pushing out Installs, Says its installing but not
Has anyone seen this. It seems to happen with ARD 3, have not seen this in ARD 2.
I go to the Install Packages on Target Computers, put in: 10.4.7 Combo (for the correct CPU, PPC or Intel), security updates, QT 7.1.2, etc.
Push it to Macs I can connect to, observe and control.
The progress bar copies the files (in some instances it does not) and then it just hangs there, bar does not move, Installs never finish, not good, very odd.

Is it the same clients that have the problem every time? Are those clients doing anything cpu intensive? Have you tried rebooting the affected clients?
Maybe try a smaller package on those clients.

Your problem is not Boot Camp, in fact, is your optical drive. Win XP requires indeed sp2, but also the internal drive, does not work from external optical drive.
For other possible tricks, please use the appropriate Boot Camp forum, not here. Mac OS X may be installed from both external and internal optical drive and/or internal/external partition of a disk, any disk. Windows is not so generous.

Numbers 3.x can only open Numbers '09 and later.  You will need Numbers '09 to open Numbers '08 files.
If it is a single file (or only a few) you can email me and I will open and convert then email back.  My email address is in the "Biography" of my profile.
You may have Numbers '09 installed.  Look in the folder "/Applications/iWork '09"  if Numbers is in that folder launch it, open the file you tried to open, and save.  Then you should be able to open in Numbers 3.x

iTunes Support (these are user-to-user forums) should either grant you a re-download or credit you if it didn't play in its entirety - try the 'report a problem' page to contact them : http://reportaproblem.apple.com
If the 'report a problem' link doesn't work then you can try contacting iTunes Support via this page : http://www.apple.com/support/itunes/contact/ - click on Contact iTunes Store Support on the right-hand side of the page, then Purchases, Billing & Redemption

    Hi Jessica,
No, the SD slot will not work, you need an ExpressCard/34 slot.
I do not know if it works with cameras, but with two or more HDs, if the first one has two FW ports, you can "daisy chain" one or more additional HDs from it.

  • Does Running a Zeros Erase + Clean Install of SL Fix Glitchy Bugs ?

    Hi Guys & Gals...
I'm just asking the questions as I know from previous and past experience a clean install can be a very dangerous this to do.... I have lost data before.... doing this procedure.... but I must say... it nearly always delivers a fix to software problems the normal route of repairing permissions never seems to deliver.
This time I have all my Data on a 8TB Drobo Drive... so I'm confident I won't loose any important data.... but I do know I will have to slowly... piece by piece build back up my entire system.... enter numerous serial numbers and software updates etc... but I think it might be my only resort at this stage.
I have been having issues with Photoshop ever since I updated to Snow Leopard. My main issue was that I couldn't have numerous windows open... as in I would find it difficult to select the window I would be working in... sometimes what Photoshop would be showing me wasn't the file I was working on. I would close it down... and then realise I closed down the main file I was working on... and it wouldn't even ask me if I wanted to save the file and I would loose all the work I had just done. That would be my major issue... also.... opening numerous high resolution TIFF files would normally end up in Photoshop just quitting. I have 8GB of RAM which always served me well under Leopard and Tiger.
Now Photoshop won't even open two documents without quitting and it's very erratic behavior... sometime it will open them... others it won't... so I really want to sort this before my workload starts to intensify.... which is about 1-2 weeks away.
The new issue is with Quark.... it just keeps quitting on certain files.... but when I move these self same files over onto my MacBook Pro... they open fine... OK I could use my MacBook for some edits... but it's a 15" screen as opposed to my normal 3-" working screen and it's really not the way to be working...
So all in all I find myself here... wanting to do a complete erase and install. When I did upgarde from Leopard to Snow Leopard I usually would have done an erase and clean install... but I was busy and couldn't afford the down time and anxious to experience Snow Leopard so I went ahead and just did the software upgrade.
My question is.... will I really be only wasting my time... as I know it will take days... if not weeks to get fully everything back to the way it was.... but if I can eradicate these issues... while I have this window of opportunity.... maybe it will be worth it..
Any comments... please.... would be most welcome... as I'm planning the Zeros Erase + Install for tomorrow.
    Yours sincerely,
    Anthony

MacOS X 10.6.2 still has quite a few crashing bugs. So does every other OS on the planet. It certainly has far fewer of those than any Adobe product.
I was talking about the specific Mac OS bugs that have plagued me personally since 10.5.0 under Photoshop CS3 and CS4 — these are known, documented crashers within the OSX operating system that Apple hasn't fixed in 10.6.2.
There are also new OSX bugs that were introduced in 10.6.0 that also crash Photoshop CS4 (according to my troubleshooting and high-level Photoshop engineers who've looked at my numerous crash reports on a freshly 'zeroed' 10.6.2 hard drive with only Photoshop CS4 added on).
Yes, RAM was ruled out, and Apple replaced my logic board, processors, matching video cards during the process. They even replaced a 30" monitor that failed.
I even duplicated the OP's specific problem (working with several files open, dragging layers between windows) on a remote Adobe machine using special debug software for the engineers. I did this in less than eight minutes and told them exactly where the crash occurred.
writing zeros to any hard drive is a waste of time.
I am not too sure what Apple's Disk Utility> Security Option (zero) does these days — if it remaps bad blocks or if it will fail the 'zero' process when it hits them as it 'tests' each and every block on the drive — so I won't comment further other to say I "zero" every Mac I get (new or used), every new hard drive I install, and every suspect hard drive.
So for now, I will stick to my opinion that the 'zero' option is far from useless here to make a troubleshooting point to the engineers or support techs.
I have no doubt 10.6.2 is very unstable for certain users - mainly those users who want to run unsupported software.
If you are saying Photoshop CS4 is "unsupported" software, then I agree with your point — then the simple point here becomes: Photoshop does not run reliably on the Mac OSX platform in a professional environment.
    +++++
I have to say I've done all the troubleshooting (with both level two Apple support and Adobe engineers) to know what I am talking when it comes to CS3 and CS4 Photoshop problems on Intel machines running 10.5x and 10.6x.
I think the benefit of these forums is to get a wide variety of opinions from people who actually use the software on a daily basis, and from those people who actually know how to make the Mac OS work and those who know how to troubleshoot it effectively.
My point is Photoshop runs like crap for some people on OSX 10.5x and 10.6x, so don't waste too much time trying to figure it out once you ruled out the hardware and install....

  • I want to upgrade my Imac from Snow Leopard to Yosemite, but only have 1Gb RAM. Can I add RAM, then upgrade?

I want to upgrade from Snow Leopard to Yosemite, but can't because I only have 1Gb Memory.  Can I add more memory, then do the upgrade? What should I buy?

Its older than I realised. Purchased in 2009, but is an early 2008 model.
So I'm possibly aiming a bit high by going for Yosemite?  Would an earlier o/s be a more realistic option?
On the RAM issue, I fully agree with what Etresoft has written. I have just visited various sites, including OWC, Mactracker and iFixit and your Mac seems to have the Penryn processor. It will address 6GB of RAM which is more than enough for your use.
Where I differ from him, is Lion. The last big cat which I liked was probably Snow Leopard, and thereafter now Yosemite. There has been a lot of successes with your generation migrating to Yosemite, but with 6GB of RAM. Admittedly there were also problems for some, but I have observed even more successes even after initial problems. Mostly these problems were caused by adware or crapware installations. (Thank you Etresoft for a wonderful utility!)
Your iMac also has a SATA interface for a 3GB SSD, which is good enough. We have a Mac here with the same interface, still with a normal conventional stock HD running Yosemite, but only 4GB of RAM and it is running fine.
Of course the newer technology processors, faster RAM, PCI SSD, greater bandwidth on the newer Macs perform much better. But as I am on the older side, (ha ha), some of the 'vintage' Macs are still my favourites to use for certain tasks. Like using 9.09 for doing certain things and then converting the results afterwards for completion!
But, once again, it is your decision and only you can decide as you yourself knows your own circumstances better. Weigh up the options, considering what Etresoft has pointed out vs what Yosemite offers ito continuous support, security and features. There are a lot of your type of iMacs out there, and some of the users spoke about feeling like having a new Mac. There were others, who were wailing though. You could of course, also follow the advice of a test installation on an external and testdrive it, or wait for the release of 10.10.2 which I read somewhere is eminently close?
    Have fun

  • The internet browser with more thane one video running is keep crashing after installing Adobe flash.

If I run any website contains more than one video like this website for example :
http://www.neatoxv-21.org ,where it has two videos talking about the cleaning vacuum neato xv-21, and both videos
are running at the same time, then suddenly the explorer will crash, But in other broswers like google chrome it works fine.
To double check, I un-installed the software and then I restarted my computer, I installed the software again but the same issue.
I am using windows 7, so to be sure I missed nothing I updates the windows from Microsoft website and also
I am sure that I have the latest internet explorer update.
Now, the funny thing, I did the same process with Google chrome and it works fine!!!
I am totally confused, wht could be the reason??
    Please advice..

Update - I've now tested this with different internet connections, different computers and different operating systems. I've also just received a response from my internet service provider who said:
"I've tested in Firefox, and it looks as if the buttons are crashing the browsers' flash plugin. This being the case, it is not going to be anything related to your computer, the internet connection, or the web server.
In all likelihood, it will be an issue with how the flash tour is coded, which I presume is created automatically by the Tourweaver package you mention. You will need to pursue their support for advice on this problem as it is something with the flash file)s( which isn't working correctly."
So, hopefully Easypano support will be able to fix the problem. Obviously no connection at all with Adobe After Effects
