G5 with Panther 10.3.9?

Hi,
Does anyone know if it is possible to run G5 2gig imac with Panther? I'm trying to get imovie 5 to actually work. I have done 3 re-installs of Tiger this last time with no updates-just what came with the discs but imovie is ubstable.
I installed Panther on an external firewire drive & imovie 5 runs well so far( & boots OK). Only problem, the fan on the imac won't stop . If I randomly move the slider in Power options, the fan stops but restarts about 30sec. later.
I've also posted this question in imovie 5 forum.
Does anybody know why the fan goes nuts & whether I could install Panther on G5 imac?
Mark

I have a "Rev. A" 1.8 GHZ iMac with 1 gig of memory and iMovieHD runs fine with OS 10.3.9. In fact, I'm recording a Sherlock Holmes movie from Turner Classic Movie using iMovieHD onto my iMac while I'm writing this with my G4 TiBook. I qualified for the Tiger upgrade and received the disks but I hesitate to install it until Apple releases three or four bug fixes - they are only up to two so far. To install OS 10.3.9 I think you'll have to erase the disk that Tiger is on since I think the installer will not let you install Panther over the newer Tiger.
My fan also seems to run a lot and the CPU seems to be very active (according to MenuMeters) as if it's running some background program - see my post from yesterday.
Good luck.

  • Install on new Mac Mini with Panther

On a New Mini out of the box with Panther installed is it better to set up the system and then upgrade to Tiger. Or do I have a choice to upgrade first.

    It does not matter.
If you have the 'Upgrade" discs, then I would upgrade to Tiger first thing, so you're upgrading over a "fresh" untouched install of Panther. Less chance for errors that way.

  • IMac G5 with Panther to New iMacs with Intel

Will there be any issues with programs or files I can run or open on my iMac G5 with Panther 10.3.9 if I transfer them to a new iMac G5 with the Intel chip and Tiger platform?
I am aware that I will probably be buying a new graphics Software package (Adobe Creative Suite)when I purchase the new computerRight now I have Creative Suite original circa 2004 (not professional)
Would files that I have created on the older system transfer to the new platform?
I'm ready for the changes but is my system?
    Thanks you,

The Mac OS X setup assistant comes with a migration tool to help you move your files and installed applications to your new machine. Because you are moving from an older Mac OS to a newer Mac OS and because you are moving from a PowerPC Mac to an Intel Mac, you may see some minor differences but for the most part everything should still work.
The migration tool will not erase your older iMac. If something does not work then you have not lost anything other than a little time.
If you have further questions or concerns I suggest you post them in a forum dedicated to the iMac such as <http://discussions.apple.com/category.jspa?categoryID=132> rather than this one, which is dedicated to Mac and Windows compatibility issues.
    Hope this helps!

There is a Ubuntu 10.4 version for Mac with PPC architecture; not sure

Or choose to search using these terms: *Open Source Linux PPC G4 Mac*
A few results point back to Apple Discussions, where there were inquiries.

Hardware support in the older PPC G4 Mac computer should be considered, in order
to have the better experience possible with the Linux-based OS; and some specs in
an old Mac may not be ideal. The graphics processor unit and amount of dedicated
RAM for the graphics alone, could make a difference; depending on what you had in
mind when running a Linux-based OS in a PPC Mac. So consider hardware specs.
Some hardware in the computer may or may not be supported by the Software; and
then, there may be some problems implementing a Linux OS version in your Mac.
If you had an old Mac Mini (PPC or early Intel) & considered running Linux, there's
a page of general ideas worth a peek: http://sowerbutts.com/linux-mac-mini/
You may not have enough room on the existing internal hard disk drive inside the
iMac G4, for a complete OS X 10.3.9 or Later OS X, and a partition for Linux in it.
And, you may find through reading further, if you need to (or don't) start fresh and
have a partition for each different OS, or not. For organizational purposes and ease
of removing one system or the other, a partitioned hard disk drive may be best.
There probably is a way to have Linux on an external bootable hard disk drive; &
that would have to be compatible with the Mac hardware requirements to be seen
and used by the computer, and also the ability to restart from Linux into Mac OS X
would have to exist in the system software. Hopefully without incident.
You will have some degree of a learning curve in this matter, from reading up on
the details of any viable Linux versions, through the ones likely to work in your
old PPC G4 Mac, and then if there are more than two or three good ones, of those
what one would be most likely to be worth the additional effort to attempt to use in it.
Depending on the version and specifications of your iMac G4 computer, there could
be different versions of linux systems capable of running it. However, some items
may not be supported which you would need to have working, such as wi-fi internet
and sleep mode, etc; among others. Searching the net does bring up more info.
{You may find, that going to OS X 10.4.11 would be more worth the effort, in that
most everything would 'just work' and you can still find many good software bits
and some fine freeware or low cost shareware to run on it. Linux versions vary
    so much on what they can and cannot do, I would not recommend running it.}
Since I am not an expert in the matter, hopefully someone with a experimental time
and results in a similar vintage Mac as yours will reply and give you insightful info.

  • Need help with Panther & 7.0.4

My hardrive recently had to be replaced. All contents of the hardrive were copied on to the service's center server and then copied to my new replacement hardrive. Quicktime 6.5.2 got messed up some way and it is affecting several appications. My system has been very stable with 10.3.9 and I am in the middle of some movie projects that needs to be continued. I have two questions (1) I have quicktime 6.5.2 installed on another internal drive, could this be installed someway on my new internal drive since apple is not supporting 6.5.2 any longer? If so, what files need to be copied over? (2) Are there people out there that are experiencing good stablility and success with Panther and 7.0.4 co existing?
Thanks so much for your help!

    Just download and install 6.5.2:

  • G5 with Panther (10.3.9) but I need to install Microsoft Office 2008!

I'm working in a office where I use a G5 with Panther (10.3.9). I'm wanting to install Microsoft Office 2008 on this computer, however, it requires 10.4.9 or later, which I guess would mean an upgrade to Tiger? Anyone know a way to bypass this install, someone suggested possibly installing in Classic? Any help is greatly appreciated!

The minimum requirements won't allow you to install Office 2008 on anything less that what it states. That's normally due to changes in later versions of the OS, or newer features that don't exist in older OS versions that the program relies on to run.

  • Leopard compatability with Panther?

We, as a Design studio, are looking to purchase Leopard and upgrade, but our Data server is not up to the system requirements and is running on Panther quite happily, we dont really want to upgrade our server at the moment, it works fine, but if we were to upgrade to Leopard on all our other Macs will there be a compatability problem with Panther?

Oops, I told a fib. The Microsoft version I'm running is 2004, good news on Photoshop, and I'll double check on compatibility on Sibelius with their website. I think my friend runs this version of Sibelius on his new (within the past 6-8 months) MacBook Pro. I have everything registered so I might be able to get replacements if need be. Thanks to all of the reply's and if you have anything to add, keep 'em coming! And if all else fails, I'll talk to someone with at the Genius Bar and get an answer. Again, Thanks a bunch!

  • Can the iMac G3 with Panther boot from an external FireWire drive?

It does have firewire. I am worried that if my internal HD fails, I am going to be SOL. Sooo... If I install just Panther (full retail) on a new internal HD, will i be able to boot from it? How about if it is on an external FW drive? I DO NOT have the original install disks that came with the computer.

If I install just Panther (full retail) on a new internal HD, will i be able to boot from it?
Yes. Verify that the computer's firmware is up to date first.
How about if it is on an external FW drive?
    Yes.

  • IMac 20" 2 GHz - Is it compatible with Panther?

We recently purchased a couple of new iMac G5 2GHz machines to ad to our army of iMacs, but when we install the image we have for our users, the fans run at full pelt.
Apparently (according to our suppliers) the fan settings are contained within Tiger, but I was wondering is there anyway to run Panther on these machines without the fans running so loud.
    Thanks

Those iMacs shipped with Tiger. Therefore Tiger is the earliest OS that is supported on those iMacs. Running anything earlier (Panther, etc.) can damage those iMacs.

  • Putting OS 9 Drivers Safely Onto A Hard Drive With Panther On It:

It does not have OS 9 drivers. I do not have any Panther CDs. or Tiger CDs. My hard drive enclosures have arrived and I got all the files organized and I put OS 9 drivers on 120gb Maxtor and also 20gb western digital that used to have Windows 98 on it...I put OS 9 drivers on that.
The only two hard drives that do not have OS 9 drivers is that NTFS formatted one, and also the hard drive with 10.3.9 only.
That hard drive is being used in an imac g3. Right now I only have two working imac g3s and nothing else works.
    =======
I am nervous about this, but can I take the imac2 hard drive out, temporarily put it in an enclosure, connect the enclosure to the imac1 with a hard drive containing OS 9 drivers & OS 9.2.2 & OS 10.3.9, log into 9.2.2, back up the entire "external" hard drive, erase it, put OS 9 drivers on it, and move the backed up files back onto it and also stick OS 9.2.2 on it also, take it out of the enclosure, and put it back in the imac2?????
Or should I buy OS X CDs??????????????
Is it possible to install with an external DVD drive?????????
Will the external DVD drive need a fire wire cable?????????
Can I buy a slot-loading DVD drive to put into the imacs???????????

OS 9 Drivers are installed prior to any other software, usually.
If a drive has partitions on it, installing drivers to only one of
these partitions may be possible, but they are on an OS 9
installer or on an OS X installer in the case of pre-10.5 OS X.
You can use OS9 as Classic, a non-boot use of system 9
under Mac OS X. This does not require OS 9 Drivers to use.
But dual-booting or booting OS 9 off a drive needs drivers.
If you are running an OS X version and have no installer disc
you essentially have no license to run it; and no way to be
able to maintain or reinstall the system correctly. You can't
drag & drop install Mac OSX. That requires clone utilities
in order to move a bootable copy of OS X (to external FW.)
Tiger being the last supported OS X version for Classic and
also for dual-boot computers which can support OS9 & OSX.
Panther install discs have a feature when the OS is first installed
to add those OS 9 Drivers; and an OS 9 installer also has the
ability to install OS 9 Drivers.
And in older iMac G3 computers, some did not get the required
Firmware update; so that would be installed with OS 9 running
the computer, installed on the hard disk drive.
Some vendors may still have replacement or upgrade optical
drives capable of booting an iMac G3 from an installer DVD.
Check OWC web page, or MCE, these offered drive upgrades.
So, unless you have an OS 9 installer, or an OS X installer with
the OS 9 Drivers install feature, getting those drivers is next to
impossible. Moving the hard disk drive around won't do it.
And having an OS X already on a drive, means you can't just
install OS 9 drivers that late in the game.
(But you can transfer files between Macs in several ways; one
with a FireWire cable, if the Mac you want files from is booted
into FireWire Target Disk Mode, it appears like an external drive
& the second Mac you want to drag a file into, is running normal.
No removing a drive to just get info from the Mac to another.)
You would need a FireWire cable for an external DVD drive, and
also for FW Target Disk Mode. The USB1.1 is way too slow for
using any external drive, hard disk or optical, with older Macs.
A bootable external drive would be FireWire, not USB 2.0 or 1.1.
For other transfers, you may need to get a special Ethernet cable.
    Good luck & happy computing!

  • Does 2.2 admin with with panther (ARD 1.2) clients?

I have a group of Panther (10.3.5) machines that I currently admin from my Panther desktop. All of these are running ARD 1.2 (I don't believe 1.2 had seperate admin and client components...true?).
I've added a Tiger machine and need to admin it also but I keep getting connection problems from my ARD 1.2 desktop. I'd like to upgrade my desktop to ARD 2.2 but am concerned that I may not be able to admin my Panther machines any longer.
Is 2.2 admin backwardly compatible with 1.2 clients?
    thanks muchly

To my knowlege (I have had both ARD 2 and the original ARD), it is not backwards compatible.
However, if you have Panther, you can update all of those machines remotely to ARD 2.2 client. Just do a network scan for those machines from the machine with ARD Admin installed. They will show up as having only ARD 1.2 (possibly 1.2.4), and will give you an option somewhere to update to the newest ARD client software.
    Hope this helps.

  • USB modem won't work with Panther

My girlfriend has a black G3 powerbook and uses a Speedtouch 330 USB modem successfully on OS9. However I have also installed Panther 10.3.9 and installed the Speedtouch Panther driver update from their site but when I open the Network preferences panel Speedtouch USB does not come up as an option.
If I go to the list of modems it is there but if I select it it still doesn't work.
In the past I have used a USB modem with my G4 and Panther and after installing the driver it immediately appeared as a new connection option called Speedtouch USB and it worked fine.
I have tried reinstalling the driver several times. I have spoken to Apple and I have spoken to Speedtouch with no result.
I can only assume that it is something to do with the black G3 compatibility.
I have done a test with her powerbook in Panther and plugged in my ethernet router and it works fine.
But these routers are quite expensive and it bugs me... why won't Panther recognise the USB driver?
    Any suggestions please ?
    thanks
    Pete

My westell modem is very flakey and will often reset its connection from PPOE to bridge all by itself. From what I read on the web, setting the westell to bridge is the way to go since it allows the router to actually route. But, for me it only works when sent to PPOE. That means that the westell is both a modem and DNS/NAT router so I disabled those capabilities in airport. The verizon dslstart.verizon.com has some help on how to do this. search on westell 6100.

  • IBook G4 Re-install - won't reboot with Panther DVD

Hi -- trying to reinstall Panther 10.3 with Disk 1 (holding down the 'C' button during reboot) - but it's not working. I get the light blue screen with the Apple -- but nothing else. The iBook won't reboot whatsoever thanks to the constant loading of garbage software by the 13 year-old owner
    Help!

    Hi Mark,
Definitely a PMU reset: Unplug the ibook, take out it's battery, and press Shift-Option-Apple-Power together for 1 second. Release, wait 10 seconds, and attempt to boot. (You'll need to plug it in or put back the battery first. I invariably forget this step. LOL)
If no joy, insert your OS install disk, then power on while holding the Option key. Keep the option key down until you see a gray screen. You should see little icons for your internal hard disk and the install media. This can take a while. Be patient. Click on the CD and then the right-arrow button to boot from the CD.
Still problems? Take up the ibook keyboard to reveal the airport card underneath. Take it out and reseat it and its antenna cable. A loose airport card can cause wierd startup problems.
Let us know how it comes out.
    Good luck,
    John

  • Reinstalling iPhoto - came with Panther, disappeared after upgrade to Leopard

iPhoto worked after upgrade from Panther (10.3.X) to Leopard (10.5.8) but later disappeared - I think a disk error occured.  My synched backup copy also got wiped.  Started all over - zeroed the disks in case I was going to sell it - installed original Panther - iPhoto worked.  Re-installed upgrade to Leopard 10.5.8 - now get the error: "You cannot use this version of the application iPhoto.app with this version of Mac OS X."
    Any ideas?
    Boyd

10.3 (original disk) installed o.k. on the spare disk, and iPhoto comes up but I can tell by the interface that the one I was using last summer was a newer version.  I will see if it will upgrade from Panther with software updates, and then install Leopard after that.  Maybe that is the path needed to recover it.

  • Problems with installing classic 9 with panther

    hi folks
i recently purchased a used G4 466 power mac with 10.3.9 panther and wanted to run some older apps from my older 8500 tower but noticed to run the apps i need classic environment installed. cool no problem. i have the 9.0, 9.1, & 9.2 discs in hand. problem is i can't get them installed. i even went to hold down "C" key while starting booting up but nothing different. open up the disc on any of the 3 that i have and hit install (unsure why apple put 2 install icons on each disc) and a pop up asks me if i want to start classic... sure ok..
now i have a pop up saying " there is a problem with the Mac OS 9 system folder you selected. to select another system folder, click open classic preferences. sure ok...
it locates the disc i have in the a drop down pop up comes up saying " no classic sstem folder. you do not have a version of mac os 9 installed that supports classic. install mac os 9.1 or later.
i only have panther on the system on not on disc so i hope that's not an issue to come. anyways i'm going to try booting from disc again hoping i didn't miss anything but i anyone has got some feedback on this i'd be truly grateful.
    Glimmerdrive

Hi, Glimmerdrive. The installer application on your OS 9 installer discs only runs in OS 9, not in OS X — so it's essential for you to start the computer from one of those discs in order to run the installer. If you start up from your hard drive in OS X, and then insert the discs and try to run them, you'll get nowhere, as you've discovered.
The G4/466 Digital Audio model was shipped with an installer CD containing a model-specific version of OS 9.1. It can't start up from a retail OS 9.0 or 9.1 installer CD, but a retail OS 9.2.1 disc will boot it. There is no retail 9.2.2 installer disc, so the one you have is specific to some other Mac model, and can't be used on the DA G4. All this means, unfortunately, that the threeOS 9 discs you have are useless to you (unless the 9.1 disc is the one that was originally shipped with your computer.) You'll need either to get that originaldisc or buy a retail 9.2.1 installer.
