G5 Won't start up.. I've tried all the tricks I know.

OK.. so the other day I restart my G5 Tower because it was a little sluggish.. haven't restarted in a while so I re-booted ... the grey apple screen comes up.. then the Starting mac osx progress bar loads all the way to the end.. then just hangs... if I left it there for hours it would still be there.. I have tried everything I know and could find on these boards as well as osx help articles.. here is what I have done.
first:
started up from install cd.. tried to repair volume couldn't complete the repair. apparently there are like 40 overlapping files somehow.
second:
ran diskwarrior 3.0.3 got all the way through the process to where it says it is repairing overlapping files then suddenly there is an error and it can't continue.. Did this three times
third:
tried to boot in safe mode.. spinning gear then goes to starting mac osx progress bar and same story .. hangs for eternity.. bar is still moving but I can't get past this screen.
fourth:
booted in single user mode ran fsck 4 times until it said nothing appears to be wrong....
re-booted and same thing happens Starting mac osx screen comes up progress bar loads til the end and never goes any further.
fifth:
Booted from OSX install cd tried to archive and install OS... wouldn't even begin to do this just said there is an error and to try again... Tried this twice.
sixth:
tried booting in target disk mode hoping I could just copy a few essential files I hadn't recently backed up with the intention of doing an erase and install of the whole computer.. couldn't get my laptop to see the G5 HD on the desktop.. opened disk utility on the laptop and it shows up but won't enable any repair options.
So at this point I am at a serious loss. It appears I have a serious problem with something like 40 overlapping files that are causing all this misery but I can't get to the files to delete them.. and nothing I run can repair them
at this point I just want to get in to the HD anyway I can to backup so I can do an erase and install with Leopard. Anyone have any input out there that might be able to help?
PS: I have just enough knowledge of using the terminal to make me a danger to myself.. so if any input you have comes in the form of 500 command lines then please either spell it out in detail so I know exactly what to type and when.. or just please act as though you don't see me flailing my arms on this rapidly sinking ship.

Sounds like possib;y putting the HD in an external Firewire case, (possibly Target mode if that still works), then If DiskWarrior can't fix it, you might try Data Rescue II...

I have a 4th gen iPod touch that won't power up! I tried all the traditional stuff. I want to know how to tell if the battery is good. itunes see's the ipod in recovery mode. Tried dfu mode and did not work. Any ideas? I can hear the PC beep when plugging it in! I suspect a bad battery and trying to charge it ina wall charger made it hot!

    Try:
    - iOS: Not responding or does not turn on
    - Also try DFU mode after try recovery mode
How to put iPod touch / iPhone into DFU mode « Karthik's scribblings
    - If not successful and you can't fully turn the iOS device fully off, let the battery fully drain. After charging for an least an hour try the above again.
    - Try on another computer
    - If still not successful that usually indicates a hardware problem and an appointment at the Genius Bar of an Apple store is in order. The appointment is free.

  • Facetime Option Gone, tried all the tricks...

I've searched the discussion boards everywhere and tried all the tips, but I can't get the facetime option button back for any of my contacts.  I've used FT for over a year, but just vanished one day.
I've tried: soft reset, hard reset, phone restore, update software, cycle FT option in settings on/off, cycled wifi on/off in combo with FT option.  Nothing seems to work.
I'm also just on a wifi network in Afghanistan, no cell coverage, but like I said I've used the iphone here and my buddy is using his right now.  The FT option in the phone settings says "Waiting for activation..." but I don't know why/how to fix it if that is the problem.  Desperate to talk to family so any help would be greatly appreciated.

    Hi Dave,
    I just had this very same problem but after research have found out why;
Go to setting> phone> faceTime/ turn it ON.
If this doesn't work, if restriction is enabled on your device then go to setting> general> restrictions> enter restriction code> faceTime/ set it on. I hope this helps!

  • My MacBook Pro Won't Start and I've tried all of the suggestions I can find to no avail. What should I try?

When I boot the computer I get the flashing question mark. I have tried:
1.) Holding 'C' to access the 'Startup Utility' but the only thing that accesses is the Wireless Internet access.
2.) Holding [cntrl. option, power button] but that didn't access anything
3.) Holding [shift] to access safe mode, but that didn't access anything
It also suggested loading the 'startup disk' that came with the laptop, but I'm digging through the box and I don't seem to have one.
I don't seem to have access to removing the battery (I, at least, don't see the battery and would have to take the thing apart to access it)
The problem started with a stuttering/ skipping of the functions a couple of days ago- of which I started this thread: https://discussions.apple.com/message/17083016#17083016
That seemed to solve the issues until this morning when a video I was playing suddenly froze. I restarted the computer and the flashing question mark appeared.
Can anyone help with this please?

A flashing question mark appears when you start your Mac
Holding 'C' to access the 'Startup Utility' but the only thing that accesses is the Wireless Internet access.
You hold the C key down when booting from your install disc. Hold down the Option key to prompt the Startup Manager window where you can select the startup disk. If the startup disk is not available from that window then it's likely failing or has failed.
Holding [cntrl. option, power button] but that didn't access anything
    Just the Option key.
It also suggested loading the 'startup disk' that came with the laptop, but I'm digging through the box and I don't seem to have one.
It's an "install" disc, not startup disc and you need those discs to repair your Mac or take it to an Apple store or Apple certified repair shop, Since you don't have those discs and you can't boot in Safe Mode (Shift key) you have no way to verify the disk.
Replacement disc(s) from Apple:   You can get replacement System Install & Restore CD/DVDs from Apple's Customer Support - in the US, (800) 767-2775 - for a nominal S&H fee. You'll need to have the model and/or serial number of your Mac available.
And hopefully you removed all vestiges of MacKeeper.

  • Firefox will not start and I already tried ALL the suggestions.

Hi, Firefox is my favorite browser that I've been using for years and all of a sudden it won't start. I've already tried the following and it will not open at all, ever.
I'm on windows 7 and have never had a problem before.
    1. I disabled my anti-virus & spyware sweeper.
    2. Tried Safe mode.
    3. I uninstalled, deleted the program files, restarted computer, reinstalled.
    4. I disabled my anti-virus & spyware sweeper again and tried with fresh install.
    5. I tried the Run dialog box, type in: firefox.exe (Profile manager window didn't open, nothing happens)
    I also tried "C:\Program Files\Mozilla Firefox\firefox.exe"
AND "C:\Program Files (x86)\Mozilla Firefox\firefox.exe" and nothing happened.
In between each try, I END PROCESS in my task manager. Even though a window never actually opens for any of these steps.
I'm at a loss and really need and would appreciate any help.
    Thank you,
    Jon

That didn't work either, but after everything, it turned out to be a recent adoble flash update. I uninstalled flash and now it works. I do need flash player though, so hopefully it works next time I reinstall... I will probably try it over the weekend and let you know.
    Thanks for the help!

  • Q5 is not starting/booting up. Tried all the solutions. Any suggestion?

    Hello,
Around after two-three minutes, from when the battery of my Q5 was remaining around 2 percent, the device restarted automatically while I was typing an email.
While it was rebooting, I plugged in the charger. But somehow there was an infinite loop of rebooting process. The device was rebooting itself as soon as it was started. This happened for three times (three reboots). So while it was booting up for the third time, I unplugged the charger. This time it started normally. I waited for few moments, everything seemed OK, so I plugged it again. It re-started itself after I plugged it in, and started the loop again.
So I removed the charger. I was busy at the moment, but after 15-20 minutes, when I looked at the device, it was turned off. I don’t know why it was turned off though. I mean, whether cuz the battery was drained or cuz of some other reason.
Then I connected it to the charger, but the orange LED didn’t turn up. I waited for few (clock) minutes, no response from LED. I tried to turn on the device by pressing the power key, no response.
Then I turned on the laptop with MS Windows/Link on it, while device was still connected. Windows did not show any sign of a USB device being connected to the laptop. I opened up Link, I tried to reload the software. No luck there as the device can’t be reset as required by Link.
So, I checked if the USB cable was working, by connecting my Bold. I checked my Q5’s charger by connecting Bold to it. Everything was OK.
Then I searched online, and found these/threads solutions:
    http://supportforums.blackberry.com/t5/BlackBerry-Q5/Blackberry-Q5-turned-off-and-wont-turn-back-on/...
    http://supportforums.blackberry.com/t5/BlackBerry-Q5/Can-t-start-up-Q5-after-shutdown/m-p/2610451#M6...
What I’ve done so far (before posting here):
    •    Checked the working state of charger/cable, and plugged it in the outlet (wall, not computer).
    •    Left the device charging for almost three hours (no any activity from LED during this period)
    •    After three hours, tried to start the device in usual manner. Held the power key for almost 20 seconds, no reaction from device/LED.
    •    Pressed both the volume keys simultaneously for almost 30 seconds. No response.
    •    Tried the last two steps again after disconnecting the device from charger.
    Further details:
    •    All the installed apps, are installed from the BlackBerry World itself. No other apps were installed, not even .apk s.
    •    No media is stored on device memory, I keep everything on MMC. In total, usually 20 megabytes of the device memory is occupied by “user files”. These files contains only pdf, word, and .txt files.
    •    At any given moment (at least in last two months), almost 50% of the device memory is free.
I am not sure what the exact problem is. I mean, whether it is hardware or software malfunction. As I’m in India, usually after 20 minutes of charging backside of the device gets a little warm. Today, even after 3 hours of charging, the device is cold.
I do not have any problem to wipe the device clean/reloading the software. I’ve everything backed up; and I use enterprise on other BB device. All I want to do is to get the device started in any way, as soon as possible.
    Please help folks!!
    Thanks a lot in advance,
    Best Regards,
    keypaduser.

You've done a pretty thorough job of troubleshooting. At this point I'd say it's time to contact your provider and get a warranty exchange (if it's less than a year old.)

  • My ipad 3 stopped charging, not the adapter and reboot doesn't do anything.  I've tried all the tricks and different adapters and now my nearest Apple store is saying it just doesn't work and it'll be $300 to replace.  Only had it 1 yr and half.

My ipad 3 suddenly stopped charging last week.  I've tried different adapters, to no avail.  I didn't drop it or spill anything on it.  I don't have tons of apps, so plenty of memory.  My husband took it to the Apple store for me and they tried charging it too even though I knew that wasn't the problem and then said it wasn't working (no kidding) and then told him it would be $300 to replace.  Seeing as I've only had it for a year and a half and it cost more than twice that to begin with, I'm a little ticked that it stops charging, a problem I know is very common according the all the message boards and they want to charge me $300.  I've always heard that Apple was so good to it's customers, but my iphone has been a nightmare, and now my ipad won't charge.  Also, I've tried the reset options I've read about and none worked.  Sorry, just really upset.  I thought I was paying all this money for better quality and now I feel foolish for having done so.  Anybody with any ideas I, or the genius at Apple haven't thought of?  Help is appreciated.  Thanks.

May be some help on one of these links.
Could be the charger, cable or iPad. Plug the USB cable into your computer. It may say "Not Charging", however, it is charging slowly and will verify that the cable is good.
Try this first - Reset the iPad by holding down on the Sleep and Home buttons at the same time for about 10-15 seconds until the Apple Logo appears - ignore the red slider - let go of the buttons. (This is equivalent to rebooting your computer.)
The quickest way (and really the only way) to charge your iPad is with the included 10W or 12W (5W on Mini) USB Power Adapter. iPad will also charge, although more slowly, when attached to a computer with a high-power USB port (many recent Mac computers) or with an iPhone Power Adapter (5W). When attached to a computer via a standard USB port (2.5W, most PCs or older Mac computers) iPad will charge very slowly (but iPad indicates not charging). Make sure your computer is on while charging iPad via USB. If iPad is connected to a computer that’s turned off or is in sleep or standby mode, the iPad battery will continue to drain.
Apple recommends that once a month you let the iPad fully discharge & then recharge to 100%.
How to Calibrate Your Mac, iPhone, or iPad Battery
    http://www.macblend.com/how-to-calibrate-your-mac-iphone-or-ipad-battery/
At this link http://www.tomshardware.com/reviews/galaxy-tab-android-tablet,3014-11.html , tests show that the iPad 2 battery (25 watt-hours) will charge to 90% in 3 hours 1 minute. It will charge to 100% in 4 hours 2 minutes. The new iPad has a larger capacity battery (42 watt-hours), so using the 10W charger will obviously take longer. If you are using your iPad while charging, it will take even longer. It's best to turn your new iPad OFF and charge over night. • Cannot synchronise with E61i - tried all the tricks posted on web

I just got my second Nokia E61i but when I try to synchronise it with my contacts and iCal via Bluetooth I get an error message 'Device is not available or synchronization was cancelled. Close dialogs and applications on the phone and try again". The date and time are set correctly on the phone, I've tried removing the device from iSync and re-adding it, switching the phone off and back on again and then finally re-setting the device on iSync only to receive the same error message. My previous e61i worked perfectly but for some reason I cannot get the new handset to sync. Any ideas? Any help with this would be much appreciated. Thanks!

After getting the second E61i, did you completely remove the first one from both iSync and the Bluetooth system preferences pane, then setup the new phone from scratch?
If not, the Bluetooth system software probably thinks it is still trying to talk to the old phone.

  • ITunes 7.1 (newest one) won't open and I've tried all the posted solutions

I upgraded itunes but now it won't open. I tried going to repair under the control panel, I uninstalled then re-installed, and then I deleted the SC info like the Apple tutorial said (so please don't post any of those generic links to them) and STILL it won't open (will they EVER come out with a newer one that works decently? --the only reason I upgraded right away is because the previous one made the tracks all choppy).

the cursor gets a hourglass for as second or 2 and my comp. makes the general loading noise, then nothing happens ---I don't think it's a firewall as the file is still itunes.exe (as with older versions) and it was never blocked before
yeah it opened with another windows account ---does that help you out?
(actually, it did the same load symbol then nothing --so I switched back to tell you no, then I went to log it out so I could delete it, then the thing with the user agreement (as I said I had re-installed) poped up and after clicking yes and other options about uploading music it worked -----still doesn't work on my actual windows account though)
