G5 wont boot past white screen,or if it does keyboard&mouse don't work

Before it had this mega crash it had been having trouble starting up - the fan was making jet engine noises and taking forever for it to get to my desktop. It then proceeded to crash a few times during the week when using Illustrator. Then last week it went kaput. The mouse would jump across the screen then freeze,so had to use power button to switch off.Unfortunately our I.T manager has no clue with macs, it just so happens she installed some RAM the weekend before, or could this be a coincidence?The RAM was removed to see if was corrupt but this made no difference to start up.
Anyway I've tried starting up from the original disk, leopard disk and holding down all the keys people have suggested on start up. it gets as far as the white screen then the no entry symbol appears. When I try without any disk it gets to my desktop, but the keyboard&mouse do not work.
If there are any suggestions I would be grateful for your help. Otherwise I guess it's sending it off to a repair place?

With the Install Disc in the drive "Try Disk Utility
1. Insert the Tiger Mac OS X Install disc, then restart the computer while holding the C key.
2. When your computer finishes starting up from the disc, choose Disk Utility from the Installer menu. (In Mac OS X 10.4 or later, you must select your language first.)
Important: Do not click Continue in the first screen of the Installer. If you do, you must restart from the disc again to access Disk Utility.
3. Click the First Aid tab.
4. Select your Mac OS X volume.
5. Click Repair. Disk Utility checks and repairs the disk."

Then Safe Boot , (holding Shift key down at bootup), run Disk Utility in Applications>Utilities, then highlight your drive, click on Repair Permissions, reboot when it finishes.
If it still panics, disconnect the HD again & see if it boots offth Install Disc.
Does it boot into Open Firmware with CMDOption+of ?

iMac G5 won't boot Past Grey Screen. The G5 froze and i restarted, It will not go past the grey screen and it has the finder folder with blinking question mark, also the fans kick on wide open. As it atempts to boot a sound plays "beepda beepda beepda beep" that starts quiet and gets louder and repeats a couple of times. I ran a hardware check on the startup disk and all hardware passed. I thought it might be the RAM any suggestions?

Sorry for the late reply. The drive shows up when booting to disk, but it will not allow you to verify disk or repair. Also it will not allow you to select the hard drive to reinstall the software. Under disk utility Maxtor sabre shows up with total capacity:0 bytes.
I've taking the Mac to the Apple store to get looked at, and its probly the hard drive. Now Im trying to see if theres a way to recover the data myself. I've used software like "Data Rescue" the hard drive shows up "Maxtor Sabre" totally capacity: 0 bytes, and it will not recover anything.
Did this test just to see if it was power problem.

Thats when noticed the beeps are coming from the hard drive. So its getting power.
Now just wondering how to recover data.

Help: Keyboard & mouse don't work in Welcome screen after Linux 6.3 instal

I installed Oracle Linux 6.3 on a Intel X64 quad core machine. Everything seemed to go well, but after the installation completed and I rebooted, the keyboard and mouse don't work anymore.
I don't have a clue how to proceed.

Is this a Laptop or Desktop PC system? Perhaps your system is not compatible. Can you access the Linux Grub boot menu at startup?

G5 wont boot past white Apple screen.

To anybody that may have some advice. I hadn't used my power mac in about 4 days then when I turned it on last night it wouldn't boot past the white apple screen. I still have the chime my fans and processor still spin up. I tried resetting the SMU, and I also took out 3rd party ram I had installed and tried booting up to see if that was the problem. I'm prepared to take it to the apple store, I just thought somebody might have some advice before I take it there. So again when I boot up it reaches the white screen with the grey apple and then it just gives me the little grey spinning dial and just spins and spins. Thanks in advance to anybody with any advice.

Well first I booted holding option and it just booted into target disk mode or something like it, a screen that would allow me boot from a different drive if I had one that was formatted with Tiger. So then I rebooted holding >shift and OPtion. And it kernel paniced, it said it didnt have the driver for this version Tiger 7,2 or something along those lines and then it gave me apples screen of death asking me to restart.

2010 MacBook wont boot past grey screen, even after a new hard drive and install CD.

Hey guys, I received a 2010 Macbook last year as a gift (no warranty). It worked fine untill a few days ago. It wouldn't boot past the grey apple logo. I took it in to an Apple store and they said it was a bad HDD. Since I didn't have much stored on it, and I have everything backed up to my desktop, I got a new, larger capacity HDD and replaced it with no issues. I started the Macbook with the OSX Leopard install CD, but it didn't identify the HDD, and now it won't boot past the grey screen.
Any ideas? Is it the motherboard?

Macbook 2,1 can't boot past white screen

I was restarting my computer to clear out the memory and whatnot and now the computer won't boot past the white screen. Unfortunately I have a DVD in its drive and can't get that out. I've resetted the PRAM, held down the option key, and even tried to boot from an external. I have taken it to the genius bar today and they said the hard drive was failing. I put the original hard drive back into the computer and still get the same thing. The drive that was in it is now in an external case and works with my Linux computer. Unfortunately, I can't access the files with my old Mac G4 since the Macbook had Lion installed on it, and all music, iPhone apps are associated with the newer system.
Is there anything else I can try? Will I need to have a new motherboard installed?

BTW, don't worry, I am saving to buy a new Mac as soon as I can.

PRAM resetting at least reboots the computer
Startup chime - normal
Shift key - nothing
If removing the internal drive and booting from an external would do anything I'd certainly try that.
Since the computer is 6 years old, ironic since I'm typing this on my old G4 tower, it will be replaced with a Mini since I no longer have a need for a laptop. It's also out of warranty and will probably not be worth the cost to get it fixed.
The geniuses at the Apple store suggested I buy a new hard drive and that would solve my problems. I highly doubt it since I've put another drive in and it's doing the same thing.

IBook G4 won't boot past white screen gray apple.

I'm having problems with my iBook G4 booting up. It won't get past the white screen with gray Apple and clock thing turning. I successfully hooked the iBook to my G4 tower via firewire and can get files off of it as well as run a series of TechTool Pro tests and repair procedures. However, I still have the same startup problem. It never gets past the white screen with gray apple. It's stuck there with the clock continually turning. Is there anything else I could try before getting everything off and wiping the drive clean and starting over? I don't know if it's a hardware or software issue at this point. Thanks for any help you could suggest.

You should at the very least backup your Home folder from it before attempting this, but it appears to be time for a relatively painless Archive & Install, which gives you a new/old OS, but can preserve all your files, pics, music, settings, etc., as long as you have plenty of free disk space and no Disk corruption, and is relatively quick & painless...

Please can someone help.....
I got a Imac G4 at the weekend for a bargin, but it wont boot up. When i turn it on it makes the noise and comes up with a grey screen with the apple logo and the loading circle. It doesnt go past this screen and after about 15 mins turns itself off.
Any ideas how i can get this running again (havent tried anything yet to be honest as im not sure what to do). I love these machines as i just think they are querky and would love to get it working again to use as my home pc (as even though its old it will still probably be quicker than my old microsoft laptop)

If the optical drive tray cannot be opened, what happens if you hold down the mouse button during startup?
As a brody indicated, a faulty hard drive cannot be ruled out. Instructions for removing this drive can be found in the ifixit.com guides as well.
If you can gain access to the optical drive, the best way forward would be to use an appropriate Mac OS X system CD in an attempt to start from that disc (holding down the C key).
If it is not possible to locate a correct system CD right now, another way could possibly be to try to boot from an Ubuntu CD for PowerPC instead (once again, holding down the C key) just to see whether the computer is capable of booting at all.

Macbook won't boot past white screen

My girlfirend's 2009 macbook aluminum unibody ((Leopard 10.5.x) is having a problem booting up. Initially I ran Onyx on it and it said it needed a disk repair. I ran a quick hardware test and it came back ok. I ran Disk Utility off of the cd and it said the repair failed. I believe the message was "invalid node, repair or verify failed." I tried it 3 times. When I went to quit disk utility and restart, it stayed on the white screen with the spinning wheel for a few minutes then the screen went blank. I tried to restart several times, always the same. I have tried resetting PRAM. I tried starting in Safe Mode but it wouldn't. I finally went to reinstall the OS but when it gets to the screen where I have to choose a drive, there is no drive in the screen to select. I don't have Disk Warrior, so can't try that. I'm thinking to remove the hard drive and get the data off of it onto my computer, then to erase her drive and start from scratch. Does anyone have another idea before I go through this?Thanks for the help.

If your OS X installer disc is no longer usable then you can arrange to purchase a replacement by calling AppleCare Customer Service.
Have you tried reformatting the hard drive? If may not require replacement unless the drive has truly failed.
Extended Hard Drive Preparation
1. Boot from your OS X Installer Disc. After the installer loads select your language and click on the Continue button. When the menu bar appears select Disk Utility from the Utilities menu.
2. After DU loads select your hard drive (this is the entry with the mfgr.'s ID and size) from the left side list. Note the SMART status of the drive in DU's status area. If it does not say "Verified" then the drive is failing or has failed and will need replacing. SMART info will not be reported on external drives. Otherwise, click on the Partition tab in the DU main window.
3. Under the Volume Scheme heading set the number of partitions from the drop down menu to one. Set the format type to Mac OS Extended (Journaled.) Click on the Options button, set the partition scheme to GUID (for Intel Macs) or APM (for PPC Macs) then click on the OK button. Click on the Partition button and wait until the process has completed.
4. Select the volume you just created (this is the sub-entry under the drive entry) from the left side list. Click on the Erase tab in the DU main window.
5. Set the format type to Mac OS Extended (Journaled.) Click on the Options button, check the button for Zero Data and click on OK to return to the Erase window.
6. Click on the Erase button. The format process can take up to several hours depending upon the drive size.

IMac won't boot past white screen, now has partial pixelation?

I have just tried to restart my 2011 iMac and it has become stuck on the initial white screen (before the grey spinning gear) prior to the reboot it had being running fine for about 4 hours.
I initially thought that it may be trying to boot from the scratched PS2 game I had in the drive (was experimenting with PCSX2 before the reboot) I have tried every button combination I can find to eject the disk or boot into a different OS, I have also tried resetting the SMC and PRAM (I didn't get the 2nd beep) but to no avail. I have also taken out the extra 4gb of memory I installed to go back to the stock 4gb and swapped the stock 4gb for the new RAM but this hasn't helped either.
I have also noticed there is a small line of pixelation at the bottom of the screen, the high of it varies but it is usually around 4 pixels high, some of them are random colours but most of them are black, does this mean the graphics card has gone?

Reinstalling Lion/Mountain Lion Without Erasing the Drive
Boot to the Recovery HD: Restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the COMMAND and R keys until the menu screen appears. Alternatively, restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the OPTION key until the boot manager screen appears. Select the Recovery HD and click on the downward pointing arrow button.
Repair the Hard Drive and Permissions: Upon startup select Disk Utility from the main menu. Repair the Hard Drive and Permissions as follows.
When the recovery menu appears select Disk Utility. After DU loads select your hard drive entry (mfgr.'s ID and drive size) from the the left side list. In the DU status area you will see an entry for the S.M.A.R.T. status of the hard drive. If it does not say "Verified" then the hard drive is failing or failed. (SMART status is not reported on external Firewire or USB drives.) If the drive is "Verified" then select your OS X volume from the list on the left (sub-entry below the drive entry,) click on the First Aid tab, then click on the Repair Disk button. If DU reports any errors that have been fixed, then re-run Repair Disk until no errors are reported. If no errors are reported click on the Repair Permissions button. Wait until the operation completes, then quit DU and return to the main menu.
Reinstall Lion/Mountain Lion: Select Reinstall Lion/Mountain Lion and click on the Continue button.
Note: You will need an active Internet connection. I suggest using Ethernet if possible because it is three times faster than wireless.

System Won't Boot Past White Screen With Apple Logo

I have a Power Mac G5 tower that someone gave me. No hard drive.
I placed a NEW hard drive in and installed 10.4 onto it. When I finished I turned OFF the machine. When I now try and turn the machine ON, it will freeze-up during boot up at the white screen with the Apple logo. The little spinning ring/dial doesn't come up.
The system is:
Power Mac G5 (June 2004)
Model ID: PowerMac7,3
dual 2.5GHz
512MB RAM (2x256MB)

My Mac won't boot past white screen and startup keys won't work

Hello. I have an iMac not sure what year.
So about a year ago it froze and wouldn't restart, so I neglected it for a year. Now that this my only fixable Mac I have been researching to fix it. I was able to boot into safe mode about a week ago for a little bit but then it froze again. Ever since then none of the startup keys work, even resetting the PRAM, I heard the second ding and then it just brings up the cursor on the white screen with no disk options.
I have an external disk drive connected to the USB I'd like to boot my Mountain Lion from but since the start up keys don't work I don't know how to do that.
Any help would be incredible, I do not care about saving anything from the computer I just want it to work. I hate dealing with the "geniuses" so that's not an option.

When you hear the startup tone hold down the Option key and you should be able to boot into the Recovery Partition if you have Lion, Mt. Lion or Mavericks on the internal HD. If even the Option key does not work then your keyboard may have dead batteries or be defective and in need of replacement.
If you have ML on the EHD as a bootable clone then you should be able to boot from it.
My best guess is you have a failed HD though, my advice is to take it in for professional diagnosis to your local Apple Store or AASP and get a quote on what is wrong then decide how you want to proceed.

Laptop wont boot past Toshiba screen

I have the Satellite c855-s5123. I shut it down and when I went to turn it back on it wouldn't boot past the initial startup screen. The Toshiba screen came on, it said it was repairing (i believe that was the word it used) the C: drive. It began counting up with % until 100% then went on to the blank screen (mine is pink) that always comes up when booting up. After that it turned black, then blue back and forth and never went on to boot like normal. I don't know anything about computers. The only thing I did after this was press control alt delete...when I did this a message came up that said "the instruction at 0x04fe9006 referenced memory at 0x0000001d. the memory could not be written" and an "okay" box to click. i clicked okay and it went back to switching from blue to black blank screen. I turned it off and on once again and this time it didn't have the repair C: it just went to the Toshiba screen then straight to the black and then blue once again. I have only had my laptop about 8 months and I take perfect care of it. I have no idea what is going on. And as I said earlier, I know nothing about computers. Any help would be appreciated!!

Cant boot from internal hard drive, stops at white screen with apple and spiral. I can boot from an external hard drive, and when i press alt on start to choose the external hard drive it shows both the macintosh hd and my external hard drive. Is there any way i can back up my internal hard drive from while booting from my external hard drive?

If you were running Snow Leopard then you can reinstall as follows:
Reinstall OS X without erasing the drive
Do the following:
1. Repair the Hard Drive and Permissions
Boot from your Snow Leopard Installer disc. After the installer loads select your language and click on the Continue button. When the menu bar appears select Disk Utility from the Utilities menu. After DU loads select your hard drive entry (mfgr.'s ID and drive size) from the the left side list. In the DU status area you will see an entry for the S.M.A.R.T. status of the hard drive. If it does not say "Verified" then the hard drive is failing or failed. (SMART status is not reported on external Firewire or USB drives.) If the drive is "Verified" then select your OS X volume from the list on the left (sub-entry below the drive entry,) click on the First Aid tab, then click on the Repair Disk button. If DU reports any errors that have been fixed, then re-run Repair Disk until no errors are reported. If no errors are reported click on the Repair Permissions button. Wait until the operation completes, then quit DU and return to the installer.
If DU reports errors it cannot fix, then you will need Disk Warrior and/or Tech Tool Pro to repair the drive. If you don't have either of them or if neither of them can fix the drive, then you will need to reformat the drive and reinstall OS X.
2. Reinstall Snow Leopard
If the drive is OK then quit DU and return to the installer. Proceed with reinstalling OS X. Note that the Snow Leopard installer will not erase your drive or disturb your files. After installing a fresh copy of OS X the installer will move your Home folder, third-party applications, support items, and network preferences into the newly installed system.
Download and install the Combo Updater for the version you prefer from support.apple.com/downloads/.
If you boot from your external drive and if the internal drive mounts on the Desktop and can be accessed, then you can copy your files onto the external drive or onto a second external drive.

Wont boot past grey screen after disk access was changed

I have a new 13" macbook pro with OS X Lion. I changed the hard disk access from read only to no access, walked away for a minute, when I came back my computer screen was black. Upon touching the mouse pad the mouse arrow showed up but the screen stayed black. I preformed a hard shutdown and when turning it back on it wont load past the grey screen with the apple logo. Ideas? Solutions? Please help.
