G5 Wont start up fans running high
HI. I have a G5 and I just installed more ram. Everything was fine until I hooked up my firewire back up drive and the whole system froze. Now when I try to start the computer all I get are fans spinning out of control. I have reset the SMU twice to no avail. I took out the Ram I installed that I got from Crucial, thinking it might be bad, and would just put the system back to the way it was cuz there was Nothing wrong with it before I installed this ram. Now, I have a mess. Any suggestions?

Hi There! Have patience with me, cuz I'm new to this posting discussion stuff....I answered your posts last night but saw that they never made it here, that is why I sent the quick post today informing that after searching my brain all night while I should have been sleeping, I just decided to change out the battery and I actually had one on hand, and what a simple process and savior! All has been fine up to this point, and I do plan on returning the ram from Crucial as per my previous post unless you have other suggestion.
Here is the info you requested:

I tried adding the 4GB Kit from Crucial @ PC2-5300 and my G5 only recognized it at 3200 which I'm assuming that is what the rest of my ram will run at. I figured it's best to have 4GB of ram that run at 4200 than 8GB of ram that run at 3200????? Hence big question number two of the day! Thanks!

hello, for some reason almost everytime i restart(after software updates) and shut downs and then start up. it takes a little while it takes about 20 seconds to get out of the grey apple and the spinning circle thing. but in that time the fans all in a sudden run full speed. and then after about 10 minutes of use the fans slowly come down in speed and become normal again. sometimes when the fans run high at start up you can here then run but no air comes out. do i need some canned air?
It would probably be a good idea to clean the vent, try it and see if it helps.

Fan running high, Windows Vista
I - finally - have Windows Vista Ultimate running properly on my MacBook Pro. But I notice that after I use it for about 10 minutes the fan starts to run high/fast.
And solution?
thanks - Otto.Install InputRemapper. That will insure that the fans run at a minimum 1000 rpm to keep things cool and heat doesn't build up.
Install SpeedFan to monitor the thermal sensor temps - unfortunately it doesn't automatically control fans as it should.
Otherwise, seems like something is causing system to run hot, and for me, it always took hours before I saw that before I started using InputRemapper.

But I am not confident that there isn't more to this, like resetting the power or system management control unit or something. -
MacBook fan running high most of the time after HDD/Hard-drive Upgrade
Hi guys,
I've just recently upgraded my MacBook white's (MacBook5,2, 2GHZ duo core, 4GB ram) stock harddrive to a WD 2.5" black 750GB. After which, I noticed my macbook fan running at high speeds majority of the time... Even when just doing light weight stuff on it, such as surfing the net using Safari or even just leaving my computer idle after startup.
I did a clean install twice, the second was too see if it was really just a badly installed OS, but the problem still persisted, well at least till I decided to come here to type the post =P (maybe my macbook's scared about being talked about). Do note, that I did a pc migration each time.
After the upgrade, My fan usually runs at about 5000-6200 rpm, but right now as I'm typing this post, its surprisingly alot lower then what I've been experiencing. About 3000rpm-4000rpm.
As for the harddrive temperature, I noticed it runs between the 37 degree to 40 degree celsius range, so I'm guessing the hard-drive temperature sensor isn't busted, which was the problem for others from what I've read from other discussions here.
Also, when I boot my windows partition, the fan doesn't go as crazy, but it eventually will too.
Any idea what the problem could be? =s Or could it be that my MacBook can't handel 7200rpm hard drives =/ If so I'd probably downgrade to a 1TB WD blue =s
On top of that, does any one know if the 2.5" WD blue are as reliable as the 2.5" WD blacks? As I'm heistant to downgrade as I've read that the blues have a higher failure rate, and wouldn't want that happening. Oh and I'm not considering an SSD for this particular MacBook at the moment, as I may upgrade in another two years or so!
Thank you!
EdwinHey Mende1,
Well I guess I'll try returning the drive at the end of this week then my fan seemed to have slowed down abit since the upgrade, it's sorta spinning around 3000rpm now. I'm not sure if it's gonna be the same thoughout, and I'm pretty sure it doesn't spin as much as it did when I had my old HDD on. So I'm giving it a few more day probably till the end of this week. And if the noise issue still surfaces I'll try a different hard drive! and update you on the results!
Thanks alot Mende1!
And hello there rauldoppler!
Well, firstly, I'm using a early 2009 MacBook white! The pre-unibody one. It's running on a 2GHz Intel Core 2 Duo processor with 4GB for ram.
As for the hard-drives, I'd actually reccommend you to upgrade to an Solid State Drive if you can afford it, but if you're like me who needs more memory space then boot speed etc, I guess a HDD will be fine =) As for which brand of hard-drives, I would actually recommend WD (their black drives especially, 5 year warranty, 7200rpm speed hehe), but right now I'm having the fan problems, so I'm not too sure anymore.
I did however, do quite abit of digging around on the net and concluded that WD was a better choices amoungst the rest... But yeah the fan issue is still something I didn't expect. All in all, I guess as for which drive is better, it really depends on your needs or wants, if it's for casual internet surfing and stuff, a WD blue HDD would be fine, or a black if you want a slightly faster boot speed etc at the expense of your battery life and all. If you however value blazing fast boot times and application start up times, go for an SSD. If you need the memory space more then anything then I'd say go for a HDD again too, as it's cheaper interms of gigabite to dollar ratio. (for example, the older 500GB version of my new WD black would cost USD $43, while a Samsung 500GB SSD Pro would cost $349) Also, You could do abit of reading up on SSDs if you're interested in it There's alot of plus points to it, like ALOT, and if the price tag wasn't so huge, I would have used it for my macbook already!
Lastly, I used a WD Black 750GB for my macbook upgrade. However, I'm gonna downgrade to a WD blue 1TB this weekend if the fan doesn't settle down over time Cause well, the fan noise is really an issue for me.
Peace out guys!

Pavilion Slimline locks up in sleep mode-fan runs high-won't power up unless I pull power cord 1st
Brand new HP Pavilion Slimline 400-314 Desktop - while in sleep mode sometimes will cause the computer to lock up, the power light will be on solid, the fan is running on high. Only way to unlock the computer is to hold the power button in for 5 seconds. I wait for 15-20 seconds, then press the power button to turn it back on. Immediatly the computer starts back up again with the power light on solid and the fan running on high. The only way to break this cycle is to first pull the power cord from the back, wait 30 seconds, and plug it back in. This time when I power up the computer it fires up just fine.
Is this a BIOS issue? Please help as I don't have that much hair left.

Macbook Pro fans running high from startup
Hi, I'm new to this forum, but I've been looking around quite a bit, both here and on other forums to find a solution to this problem, unsuccessfully.
I have a Macbook Pro, 15", 2007 model, Intel Processor. For a while now, the fans on the computer have speeded up to 6000 RPM almost immediately from bootup. Before today, the computer also overheated quite badly, topping at 96 degrees Celsius as monitored by istatmenus. Today I decided to open the computer (warranty already expired) and clean out dust and whatever else might be clogging up the fans. Using a high pressure air bottle I got rid of a few dustbunnies, no copious amounts, but something. After reboot, tthe temperature seems under control (CPU at 44 degrees celsius), but the fans keep running high.
I've tried out all the recommendations I found in other threads:
Reset SMC a few times
Reset PMU
Reset PRAM
There are no activities using up processor power, usage at the time of writing is about 20% per core with Google Chrome, Mail, Skype and some other stuff running.
I've uninstalled both SMC Fan Control and Fan Control apps completely according to instructions (removing library files etc.)
I've installed Temperature Monitor to see if there's any problem with the sensors. All the sensors seem to be working fine, except perhaps one: SMART Disk Hitachi HTS542525K9SA00 which is not giving a reading in Temperature Monitor.
However, iStat Menus gets a reading from the Hitachi Disk, saying it's currently at 35 Degrees Celsius. Thus, it seems as though the sensors are all online.
I haven't been able to do an Apple Hardware test since I haven't got the installation disc at home.
So... I'm basically out of ideas, and getting more than a bit frustrated since I'm using the computer for audio recording, which isn't much fun with fans blasting away at noisy 6000 RPM.
Does anyone have any idea what the problem might be and how I might be able to solve it?
Many thanks in advanceYep, you could say that.
I had one of those screws unscrewed. Sure, by itself ))
but tightening it fixed the problem in my case.
Normally "nice guys" are lazy so it might be just some small unnoticeable thing.
If you were not nice with the "nice guys" you could expect more elaborate joke ))
If it is the case, If I were you, I would check termo pads, size of the screws, then tighten all up and that will be it.
For the size of the screws as for anything else you should try google.com or iFix.it
You don't really need to be not nice to be screwed )
Last joke of the "nice guys" here was replacing the trackpad connector. They told me that my MacBook is not booting and it is not the problem I've brought it for. Fortunately I have 4 Macs of the same model so it was quite easy to figure ))
Anyway, be safe, be nice, be a little bit paranoid in a sense of making connection of what happened in what circumstances.
Good luck. -

Computer wont start. Fan comes on
Fan runs really fast. I used it 3 days ago and did the shut down after update. It hasnt worked since. Grrrr I hope it gets better
Recommendation for your consideration:
Sounds like a thermal issue: i.e. Overheating of CPU/GPU and/or harddrive.
Do you have any of the free temp. monitoring s/w? Pse advise.
The fan running really fast also tends to indicate thermal problems...but after 3 days?
Have 3 mo. old 17" MBP and fan only has accelerated less than half a dozen times.
Let 'er rip and...
cheers. -
Dual 1.8 G5 Wont boot, fans running high
So last night i deleted a folder which was full of documents (school docs, nothing important). I then went to empty the trash and the little emptying the trash progress box popped up but nothing was happening. I was then unable to cancel the trash empty, and also unable to open any programs. I even attempted to restart the computer from the software but that wouldnt work. I then did a hard shut down by holding down the power button.
Now when i try and start up the computer it goes to the gray screen with the apple logo and the spinning thing underneath it (not a beach ball). After about two minutes the fans slowly begin to spin higher and higher until their running at full bore. I've tried a PRAM,and a PMU reset. I've also left it unplugged for about 10 min and tried to boot it again. I am able to boot into open firmware mode. I don't have any of the discs to do a hardware test. I've not updated any software, or any hardware, and I'm running 10.4.11. Is there anything else i should try. ThanksA few more things to try:
Safe Boot (Hold down Shift at startup)
Resetting the NVRAM (in open firmware mode, enter "reset-nvram" and press return. Then enter "reset-all" and press return.)
Verbose mode (Apple-V at startup)
fsck in single user mode -
MBP 2006, Crash during login, black screen, fans running high speed.
Hello.
I'm having problem with my MacBook Pro 2006 model. OSX 10.6.8.
When I boot into OSX and log in then the computer crashes with black screen and fan start running on high speed. It usually happends when I'm typing my password but sometimes I can log in but then it crashes usually soon.
I can boot into Safe mode and Single user mode and everything is normal there.
If I boot from OSX install CD same happens. Its crashes. Same with from Install USB stick and from Disk warrior disk. Safemode and sigleuser mode is no problem.
It started one year ago when I puted the computer to sleep and woke it up. Then it crashed. So I just stopped puting it to sleep. Then after few months it started doing this during login but after one or two restarts then it worked. And now she does it every time.
Nothing in logs that gets my attention. I've tryed resetting SMC and everything else I can reset.
Anyone had this problem ?
Best Regards.
SverrirI've been having this same frustrating problem, with the same machine (A1150, 1.83Ghz) although mine does it with both the AC and the battery. I was hoping it was the battery and just replaced it (the old one was almost dead), to no avail.
I thought it was working okay in Windows under Bootcamp until one day it decided to show off the same black-out/wild spinning fans symptoms. Grrr.
I've since run the following repeatedly, all of which have come up with nothing: AHT, Memtest, Hardware Monitor, iStat. I've been furiously monitoring the logs and not seeing anything jump out. I also cleaned the caches with Leopard Cache Cleaner and OnyX, and did an archive & install of the OS a couple of times. Lastly, I created a new user to see if there were problems with my start-up. Problems persisted.
Right now the only time I can keep it running is if I'm in Safe Mode. Not helpful, particularly WRT making a backup (i.e., I won't be able to use Firewire ).
Any more ideas/advice on this would be very appreciated. I'm ready to hurl my puter out the window.

Fan running high when using word
never had trouble with the fan but i recently started using word more often which causes the fan to run at high rpms - i know it´s usually around 1800, word causes it to be around 6200 rpm.
this is quite annoying since it lasts as long as i´m using word. anyone knowing a solution?I use the PPC version 10.0.0 of Word and it runs cool. Use Activity Monitor to see how much CPU % Word is using. Mine uses in the single digit percentage.
I wonder if there is something in Word's Preferences that is turn ON that could be turned OFF, something on the order of a virus checker or some other utility that is unnecessary, which is consuming a lot of power? I really have no better idea than that but thought I would through it out since it would not hurt to look and see if there is something suspicious in Prefs. -
Laptop is a Satellite L655-S5076. My daughter turned her laptop on, the fan starts running slow then speeds up as if to boot but it just stays running fast. The LED for the power is lit but not the led for the harddrive. I powered it down holding the power button. I listened and watched when I powered up and noticed the led for the harddrive blinks on then off quick. You can here the HDD start to spin but stops just as quick as the led light. I thought the HDD was bad so I ordered another Toshiba exact part and it does the same thing. A different sight mentioned about the CMOS battery so I pulled and checked it. The battery read 3V so it was good. I reseated every hook-up and card that was removeable. It does the same thing with battery or wall power. The disc drive opens so I tried putting my Windows 7 disc in and it did nothing. Is it the motherboard and if so is it cheaper to buy another Laptop? This one was only $542 on sale Dec 2010.
Tried reseating the cards but it still does the exact same thing. Fan initially comes on at low speed the switches to high speed but no response. No Toshiba logo or anything. Good news though. My wife thought we had got a warranty plan when we bought it so I looked through all my papers and sure enough we had a 3 year warranty plan we paid extra for during the purchase. It is good until Dec 2013. I called and they are going to send it to a company that fixes PC's called Teleplan. If it can be fixed at a reasonable cost, they will repair it and ship it back. If it cost more than the laptop is worth they will reimburse the full purchase price including tax for the lap top. This is the first warranty I have used before it expired. So, Thanks for your help with ideas on fixing the laptop.

MacBook Pro fans running high after 40C terperature
Hello, my MacBook Pro Late 2007 (3.1) when the tempetura exceeds 40C the fans go to 6000rpm and make lot noise.
* I've reseted the PRAM and SMC
* installed types of fan control, not work
* cleaned the fans
* Usage of the CPU is normal (on activity monitor)
Temperature CPU x RPM
Temp. RMP
30C ------- 3000Rpm
35C-------- 4700Rpm
40C ------- 6000Rpm
Does anyone have any idea what the problem might be and how I might be able to solve it?
Many thanks in advanceYou can't fix it if it's faulty. To determine whether that's the case, run the Apple Hardware Test, and if it reports any errors, take the machine in for service.

Intel (64 bit)There is excessive swapping of data between physical memory and virtual memory.
That can happen for two reasons:
You have a long-running process with a memory leak (i.e., a bug), or
You don't have enough memory installed for your usage pattern.
Tracking down a memory leak can be difficult, and it may come down to a process of elimination.
In the Activity Monitor application, select All Processes from the menu in the toolbar, if not already selected. Click the heading of the Real Mem column in the process table twice to sort the table with the highest value at the top. If you don't see that column, select
View ▹ Columns ▹ Real Memory
from the menu bar.
If one process (excluding "kernel_task") is using much more memory than all the others, that could be an indication of a leak. A better indication would be a process that continually grabs more and more real memory over time without ever releasing it. Here is an example of how it's done.
The process named "Safari Web Content" renders web pages for Safari and other applications. It uses a lot of memory and may leak if certain Safari extensions or third-party web plugins are installed. Consider it a prime suspect.
If you don't have an obvious memory leak, your options are to install more memory (if possible) or to run fewer programs simultaneously.
The next suggestion is only for users familiar with the shell. For a more precise, but potentially misleading, test, run the following command:
sudo leaks -nocontext -nostacks process | grep total
where process is the name of a process you suspect of leaking memory. Almost every process will leak some memory; the question is how much, and especially how much the leak increases with time. I can’t be more specific. See the leaks(1) man page and the Apple developer documentation for details. -
when i click the firefox icon to open firefox it pops up a box that says that firefox is running but not responding. i open taskmager to close the firefox process but there is no firefox process listed. i restart my computer and get the same result. firefox appears to still be running but not responding even after a restart. i even tried a cold boot ad got the same results. performed a full virus scan and excep for some tracking cookies it came up negative. i deleated the firefox kernal and downloaded a new copy and installed it. got same problem.
