G5 Wont Start Up - Maybe Kernel Panic Related

Last evening, my G5 went into sleep mode, but instead of properly doing so, it did the "wind tunnel" effect and wouldn't respond at all, so I had to hard shut down.
I left it overnight and just tried switching on now to try to find out what happened and how to resolve it. No go. I get a quick flash of grey screen, then blank, then back to grey screen, this time with a folder icon with a flashing finder icon in the middle alternating with a question mark.
I think the wind tunnel thing was a sign of a kernel panic, so am reluctant to try resetting PRAM and wiping out any logs. I tried Safe mode boot (hold shift down after chime, right?) and got nothing. Had to hard shut down again as the fans started getting increasingly noisy and I was worried about another kernel panic possibly happening.
I'm not overly tech- or Mac-minded, but not totally dumb, but have tried to search the site for tips on what to do and am not finding anything which is helping me go through this logically, step-by-step to figure out and (hopefully, hopefully, hopefully) resolve the problem, so I need some help on this. Will gladly search out how to perform tasks if need be, just don't know how to analyse/diagnose the problem well.
I installed new RAM (Crucial) a few months back, but I don't think that is the cause of the initial panic. I had peripherals on at the time, so unplugged all USB/other externals except screen and keyboard (both now plugged direct to G5) when trying it just now, but no go. I set up Airport recently with a Netgear router - this might be part/all of the cause? The internet connection was very slow prior to this problem, low signal despite it being about 3-4 metres from router and the only computer online at the time.
Could it be battery failure? I've had the G5 since 2003-04 and haven't changed the battery previously.
Any help on how to proceed with this would be hugely appreciated. Many thanks for rading and posting guys.

Thanks, just printed out that page and will go through it.
I tried using the Tiger OS Install DVD to run Disk Utility. When I use the DVD, the Startup Disk section shows the Install DVD and "Network Startup" (I'm assuming a ref. to my HDrive) which is just an icon with a question mark on it.
Disk Utility and System Profiler (again, using the Install DVD) don't recognise my hard drive at all.
I removed the airport card, too. Experienced one kernel panic (full warning screen came up as I stated the comp, had to shut down and restart) straight after, confirming my suspicions that is the cause of the panics, but no panics thereafter. Still no recognition of HD and still getting the 'missing system folder icon' thing on startup.
Keyboard's operating/recognised, it just isn't effective, since the HD is absent.
Is it possible that the error caused by the airport card could have killed my HD? Obv, I'm really hoping not, and I'm not sure how it could, but would like to know just how screwed I am here.
I'm thinking of trying resetting the PRAM - am I right in thinking the kernel panic logs are less important to me now I'm pretty sure Airport is the culprit? And could a PRAM reset 'save' my HD (i.e. get the computer to recognise it again)? Or is that not possible?
Sorry for the mass of questions, I'll read through the link now.
Will probs order a new battery once this gets sorted anyways, as I'm sure that'll give out at some point in the next 12 months.

  • 10.5.7 - Pseudo Random Kernel Panics related to appleHDA

    Hi!
I'm new to apple discussions; this is my first post and I thank everyone will try to help me.
I have a macbook 4.1 (early 2008), with 4gb of RAM made by Corsair.
Last week, I installed the incremental updated to 10.5.7.
My macbook started to have apparently random Kernel Panics. I started to investigate the problem and I found that is almost-deterministic:
1- the backtrace is always the same (related to appleHDA)
2- the kernel panic always happens after an application used the sound, but after a random interval
3- the application that generates the crash is always the application "on top", the one I'm using. It can be VLC/Quicktime that is still playing a movie, or firefox because I'm surfing the web after I played a movie with an external or embedded-in-the-browser player.
    What I tried:
1- Apple Hardware test (complete version): PASSED
    2- Memtest86: PASSED
3- Installing 10.5.7 using comboupdated (problem still there)
4- Reset PRAM (problem still there)
    5- Repairing Permissions
What I think (but I may be wrong)
1-It is a software problem related to appleHDA version in 10.5.7 because it appeared right after the upgrade. Surfing the web I found similar (but not identical) problems.
2-It is not related to Parallels kernel extensions (because I removed it)
Does someone know a workaround or a fix? This is very annoying and I don't want to reinstall leopard, because I'm waiting for Snow Leopard to do a complete system clean up.
    I'm running out of ideas.
Thank you for your help, and be patient with my english
    Fede

    Welcome to Apple Discussions!
A little Google searching reveals it may have to do with the high definition audio. This may mean the high definition audio device you are using hasn't been tested with 10.5.7, and needs new drivers or firmware.
It may also mean your audio input or output ports are damaged.
I would run the hardware test that came with your machine and see if it can detect anything if you aren't using anything non-standard with your audio ports.
    It's documentation is here:

The Kernal Panics had become so frequent that my iMac was becoming unusable. I do have a 2006 macBook that seemed to be behaving fine. I has all the same software except for the virus protection (the iMac has Intego VirusBarrier and the MacBook uses Symantec Antivirus). As has been noted in this discussion, I was beginning to suspect VirusBarrier might be the problem. But as indicated in my crash log (and noted here by several others) the Cisco VPN was being called out. Researched the VPN configuration that I was accessing and discovered that a new feature of the Anyconnect VPN software was a "web security" option that was not used on the VPN I was accessing. Before I switched virus protection, I uninstalled the VPN software and re-installed without the web security feature. It has been a week without kernal panics. I have had one crash that appeared to be related to Lotus Notes, but no kernal panics. For those of you wrestling with the same issue, may want to try this solution...

  • Brand-new Santa Rosa MBP, Kernel Panics related to Airport

Brand new MBP (2.4GHz 15"), anytime I do anything online I get a kernel panic. I am connecting to a WPA-2 network that is supporting stable connections to several other computers, including another (albeit older) MBP. I have no third-party sw installed, I have no peripherals attached, I have installed all available updates, I have run disk verify/repair and permission repair via the install disk and the problem persists. I have also physically inspected the RAM modules to make sure they're situated properly.
The console log shows mbuf failures (I can only access the log if I have the airport off) that are similar to the problem Apple identified in 10.4.8 but were supposedly solved w/ 10.4.9 (see http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?
    artnum=303712).
So two questions: anyone else out there experiencing this on a WPA-2 or other network? If so, any fixes that don't involve me having to return this computer to Apple? If this is a QA issue that could have been prevented through better testing prior to release...

    Hey Don (and others)
I bought a new Santa Rosa MPB yesterday and am suffering the same issues. My office uses WPA (not sure about the specifics) and within the first hour of ownership (of my FIRST Apple machine ever) I suffered kernel panics.
I get back to my workplace from the local Apple Store, get all set up and online. I run all the software updates fine. Next, I shut the lid and proudly carry my new Mac to a meeting. Open the lid and notice I can't get online. I stop and start the wireless and immediately get a kernel panic.
    Restart, and it happens again.
Restart, and I can get online finally. With the help of some coworkers I get to the panic.log file and notice the panic happens around the Airport.

Later I discovered that the office uses WPA. So I bring the MBP home and connect via my WEP encrypted WiFi, and haven't had the same problem once (so far it's been over 24 hours, with many "sleeps" in the meantime).
I did have another panic, waking up out of a 'deep sleep' this morning (after having had the lid shut for 6 hours)...

ACPI seems to have crashed something, hoping I can recreate this tomorrow morning.
At this point, I'm just glad to see I'm not the only owner of a the new MBP's suffering the same WPA-related crashes. Also, I do wonder if I got a replacement if it would solve anything, though I'm up for trying and may try tomorrow.
Overall, a bit frustrated (especially since after craving a MBP for months and holding out for the new models, to have these issues).
    Oh, I also have a 2.4ghz 15"

  • Temp and kernel panic relation?

Is there a relationship between temperature and kernel panic?
I've spent the day restarting the computer trying everything I've found at apple discussions and support to fix the nonstop kernel panic restart requests.
After I Left the thing off for an hour - I gave up after my husband said my ranting caused Ga Tech to lose the Gator Bowl- I was able to get almost through the OS reinstall, which was about step number 45 in my restarts for the day.
so is this a temp problem? Is this chance or related to the cool down? Cannot wait for tomorrow to talk to someone at apple!

After you talk to them be sure to post back ...it may very well be related and if so indicates a hardware issue - meaning you may have to send it in for repairs.
When you mention it's a week old then I'm assuming it's a Core2Duo and not just a refurbished orig. Macbook.

  • Multiple kernel panics related to java and NTFS

Over the past week, I have experienced at least three separate kernel panics, but only two have had their event recorded by the System Diagnostic Reports.  I was wondering if there are any known issues that could cause kernel panic, such as the ones my system has received.  I have attached the result of the most recent panic below.
Please note that I am running OS X 10.7.4 on a Mac Pro (early 2008) with 14GB RAM.  At the time the panics occurred, CrashPlan was in the process of backing up files (to CrashPlan Central) from my Boot Camp partition, which has Windows XP installed on a NTFS drive.  I mention this, because the fault appears to be related to NTFS and Java.  My understanding is that CrashPlan uses Java, and I don't believe I have many other (if any) applications running on it typically.
I should also mentioned that I may have had Parallels Desktop running at the same time, and had a Windows XP virtual running the CrashPlan client for Windows that was overseeing the backup on my Synology DiskStation NAS.  At this time, I do not believe this is related to the panic, as I have been using Parallels in such a manner for weeks prior, and never received a panic.  Also, while the CrashPlan client in Windows also uses java, due to the VM sandbox, I believe the java is handled internally by Parallels, and doesn't utilize any java thread outside of Parallels.
As I mentioned earlier, I have two recorded panics apparently caused by the same issue, having occurred in the "java" thread and related to "ntfs_attr_record_move_for_attr_list_attribute()".  I noticed that the other report also includes a section at the bottom for "System Profile" with information, such as:
    Model: MacPro3,1, BootROM MP31.006C.B05, 8 processors, Quad-Core Intel Xeon, 2.8 GHz, 14 GB, SMC 1.25f4
Graphics: ATI Radeon HD 5770, ATI Radeon HD 5770, PCIe, 1024 MB
    Memory Module: DIMM Riser B/DIMM 1, 2 GB, DDR2 FB-DIMM, 800 MHz, 0x0000, 0x000000463732353642363145353830304600
    Memory Module: DIMM Riser B/DIMM 2, 2 GB, DDR2 FB-DIMM, 800 MHz, 0x0000, 0x000000463732353642363145353830304600
    Memory Module: DIMM Riser A/DIMM 1, 4 GB, DDR2 FB-DIMM, 800 MHz, 0x80AD, 0x485900503132354637324350344E332D5336
    ... ETC ...
Why would some kernel panics include the system profile while others do not?  Are the panic logs "complete" or can they be incomplete due to the kernel locking up before writing the entire log?
I have been using this system since 2008, and gone through numerous OS and Parallels updates over the years.  At this time, I appear to be update-to-date on all software.  I do not recall ever having received a kernel panic in the past, and if I have, it would have been extremely infrequent with the last occurring many years ago.

What might I find by running XP natively?  I won't get kernel panics under XP.  I haven't run it natively in many months.
I thought that Parallels actually uses Paragon NTFS (or at least a variant of it) to read and write to the NTFS drives.  It's possible that I am mistaken, as many years have passed since I last looked at Paragon NTFS.
Is the Paragon driver intended to replace the OS X default NTFS driver or Parallels?  I'm not sure how Parallels will respond to the Paragon driver.
Parallels should be up-to-date.  It reports build 7.0.15094.
Regarding Windows XP, this is the only system I have that is still running XP on Boot Camp.  I rarely use it these days, and wouldn't be now, if I wasn't trying to back it up using CrashPlan.  My plan is upgrade when I have time.  All my other systems have Windows 7 on the Boot Camp drives.
I do have a few VMs that use XP, because I haven't had the chance to replace them with Windows 7 installs, and they are generally used for infrequent development tasks and for running Beyond Compare.  Also, I believe there may have been license issues with the version of Windows 7 that I'm own when used with VMs (meaning they're not allowed) ... but don't quote me on this.
I noticed that Riser B/DIMM 1 and 2 do not report the Manufacturer.  I'm pretty sure the 2GB and 4GB DIMMs are OWC.  The 1GB DIMMs are OEM from Apple.

  • TD340 Red Hat Linux 6.4 during start up give Kernel Panic

I am a newbie and please forgive my newness
    I recently bought a TD340 with 32GB Ram, OB SAS RAID 300.
While using the ThinkServer EasyStart up to configure the installation of Red Hat Linux 6.4. I am able to finish the installation successfull, however, after the installation is completed and and Linux 6.4 boots up, in the middle of the start up a I get the following message:
Kernel Panic - not syncing - attempted to kill
Pid: 1 comm: init not tainted 2.6.39-400.17.1
    Call Trace:
and it nevers boots up sucessfully.
    Any help would be appreciated.

It clearly mentions its bootstrap issue in Java stack. The bootstrap log files can be found in /usr/sap/<SID>/JC<XX>/work/ folder.
    dev_bootstrap* ; log_bootstrap* ;   jvm_bootstrap*.
In one of these files, it will be mentioned, synchronization exception...Database initialization failed.
90% of the issue is caused dude to Database not getting initilized or its not connected or userauthorizations missing or driver class secured in the Secure store is incorrect.

  • Crash / Kernel Panic related to Sudden Motion Sensor (SMS)

I have been having frequent kernel panics on my Macbook Pro since replacing the hard drive. I recently realized that this appears to be related to moving or bumping the machine. For example, I was recently working while lying down resting the machine on my abdomen - when I sneezed, a kernel panic occurred (log below). Based on the log, I have decided to disable the SMS for a while (so far I have not been able to cause a panic with SMS disabled). I'm wondering if this is likely (1) a defective SMS, (2) an incompatibility between the hard drive and the SMS system, (3) an OS flaw (or something that could be fixed with an OS tweak, or (4) something else I'm not thinking of.

  • Kernel Panics Related to Headphone Jack

    Hi everyone,
I've been having more and more problems with my late 2009 21.5" iMac, which I won't get into.
But, earlier this week, a VERY annoying bug popped up which effectively disabled the original internal speakers in the iMac.
Basically, the computer crashes when nothing is plugged into the headphone jack.
If I start it without any headphones plugged in, it will give me a Kernel Panic result page, or something like that.
Black text appears just before the login screen appears, which appears to be a debug log.
Then, it will restart and do the same thing over and over.
If I start the computer with headphones plugged in, everything works as expected.
But if I unplug them while the computer is in operation, it will immediately halt and crash, then show this picture.
Then, it will restart and get stuck in the kernel-panic-and-restart loop that I mentioned earlier.
Of course, I can work around this by using headphones, but I'd really like to know if there is a solution to this problem.
Could it be that I added 8GBs of RAM to the system a while ago? The RAM has never caused a problem in the past...
I've attached my system specs below. If you need any more information, I'm right here. Thanks for your time and knowledge.
    About This Mac

    Memory  12 GB 1067 MHz DDR3

I'll post a Pastebin link to a Kernel Panic log soon... I just have to finish writing this.
    Cheers

Well, months later, nobody has responded.
I don't care anymore because the problem fixed itsself for some reason.
I can't repeat any steps I took to help others with the same problem simply because I didn't do anything.
The iMac seemed to fix itsself. So, best of luck to anybody else with the same issue!

  • Recovery session canceled due to errors. Can't start DB after kernel panic.

    Hi all,
I have a cluster Oracle 10 DB that was incorrectly shutdown (node 1 got a kernel panic when I disconnected the cluster interconnect and after a while node 2 also had a panic).
Now the DB doesn't start and I already tried an endless loop of solutions that don't work and lead me right to the start. I was hoping someone could help me fix this bloody thing please. This DB was running in archive log mode.

Thank you everyone for the advices. I used this tutorial to implement the allow reset logs corruption, but still it didn't allow me to startup the DB normally without errors or recover the datafile 86.

Hi, I got a kernel panic. When i restart the laptop the system gets stuck in the loading screen (apple logo and loading gif) with the fans spinning as if threre was no tomorrow. I tried booting in safe mode (power the comouter holding shift) but no changes I've been waiting for 1 hour in the loading window already...this is not normal..

  • Volume Header & Kernel Panic - Related??

Hello! I am a fairly new Apple user and my Intel iMac has been running great - so these two seemingly unrelated issues that suddenly popped up this week have me a little panicked, so please bare with me :P
This is what happened, in order, and my main questions will follow:
My first ever kernel panic happened when I got online recently. I use the Apple External Modem (for now) and have had issues with it in the past (which were "fixed" with the 10.4.7 update). I restarted like I was instructed, and looked over the crash report that was waiting for me. The clearer English I was able to read out of the 'jibberish' was the about the Modem. So I naturally drew the conclusion that that was the add-on hardware that caused it. Everything seemed to work fine after I restarted and re-connected to the internet - no problems.
Knowing that restarts can sometimes fix the problem alone, I wasn't too worried. A special note: the night before SHUT DOWN the computer for the 1st time in ages because I was moving furniture. So this Kernel happened after a normal power up.
THEN I thought I should check/verify permissions, to be safe. Permissions were fine. Then I clicked Verify Disk (which I haven't done since updating to 10.4.7, and it was fine before that). And it gave me the "Underlying task reported failure on exit / Volume Header needs minor repair."
Never seen this before. But I haven't checked recently for it either.
    Questions:
1.) Could the two things be completely unrelated and I just happened to find them at the same time? Could the Volume Header issue have been there for a while I had not known?? Or Is the Kernel panic responsible? (From what I've read, they seem unrelated.)
2.) What IS Volume Header and is it really minor?? Do I need to rush the poor thing to an AppleCare center in the rain & storm right now? Or can I deal with it more leisurely? The iMac seems to be working perfectly fine - but I do not want to let something serious go unattended either.
3.) Can I stop having a panic attack now ??
Thanks, in advance, for any help!! (I have the crash & DU report info if that would help with my problems...)
    ~Misty

Try using Disk Utility to repair your startup disk (hard drive) as shown in Dr.Smokes Resolving Disk, Permission, and Cache Corruption. That is the way to hopefully repair that problem if it's not too seriously corrupted.
Let us know what errors it reports and if DU was able to repair them.
    Cheers!

  • Quicksilver G4 wont finish startup - gets kernel panic - how to fix?

Recently acquired a G4 quicksilver - dual core 867Mhz (mirror door) - we managed to get it working for half an hour after we gave it some RAM and a hard drive (it came with none) before it froze. When we tried a restart we got the grey screen and a message which contained lots of Chinese symbols instructing you to power down the computer. Now we only get kernel panics. I've attached a pic of the panic in case any of you can decipher it. What's the next step?

Boot off your Apple Hardware Test Disc , then run the extended Apple Hardware Test. Your model would have a separate AHT CD.
Here's the list and downloads for AHT for some G4 models if you don't find yours, some G4s only have it on the Original Install Disc...

  • Starting to get Kernel Panics

    Hi everyone,
Last month, while working my Mac Pro it kind of “turn off” on me;you could still hear the drive and the fans on as well as the isight camera lighton but the music was cut off and it started to sound like a scratched cd, sothe only thing I could do was to turn it off and turn it back up. When it did Isaw a message that said that it was a kernel problem, I didn’t gave it muchimportance, but now it’s starting to happen constantly, it’s starting to happenat least once a day.
Does anyone have the same problem?
This is the last report I got; it came from the console.

What have you changed/installed lately before they started happening? Anything with VMWare? Looks like it could have something to do with that or your graphics circuit. Try running your hardware tester.

  • VMware wont start after latest kernel update!

Okay when i went to reboot it went to boot into arch but wile it was loading the vmware modules it would stay stuck at loading vm communication interface socket family and would just stay there the only way i could even boot into arch was to edit my grub so i could login and at least comment out vmware i tried to reapply the vmware patch fix that was on the wiki and had no luck also tried reinstalling + reapplying patch after words and still no luck I'm hoping this is happening to someone else as well and not just me (mean i know lol) I also tried virtualbox but seems it has it's own mess of problems as well after latest kernel update.

I have tried rebuilding the the kernel image and even tried reinstalling grub with no luck.  After not having a usable system for several days I ended up just having to reinstall and maybe found out more about the problem.  Using the net install image and a 64 bit install this time making a EXT2 boot and a root partition of JFS right after install I get a panic during boot about how the system can't find a valid filesystem on what would be root partition.  Even when passing the "rootfstype=jfs" to the kernel line in grub it still errors out telling me that it is "Bailing out, your on your own.  Good luck!" (pretty funny error messages if you are not ripping your hair out).  After that I redid the install this time making a EXT4 root partition and everything is working.
It seems to me that this all points to a problem with JFS on 64 bit systems, my other systems are all 32 bit and usign JFS root just fine... can anyone else confirm this?
