G5 XServe Cluster Node Server Heat Issue

Hi All!
I was wondering if extreme heat at the rear (SouthBridge?) of the unit is normal? The CPUs are cool as a cucumber, but the rear is gets warm when idle, and very hot when under load. It's concerning us so much that we want to replace the little heatsink back there with a fan or at least a larger heatsink.
Any thoughts?
Thanks!

So, it has been running over the past week now. It remains constantly between 55 and 60C at all times, regardless of server load. (We put an external temp sensor on it, since it does not have an integrated one.) When holding my hand to the server housing, it feels quite hot. Also, it is the hottest chip on the server, even hotter than the CPUs which run around 50C, according to the Server Monitor.
Is this normal? How are other G5s running? Is it hot to the touch when feeling the rear underside? (... of the housing! ... just to clarify, that sentence may be misconstrued) This is our first XServe, and since we bought it used, we are a bit skeptical, since none of our previous DELL servers ran this hot.
Thanks!
-Mike

  • Dead xserve cluster node

One of our Xserve Cluster Nodes (DP G5 2.0 GHz) died over the holidays. Pressing the power button does nothing... no lights, fans, etc. However, the red light inside the case is on. Is this a power supply problem, or does the red light indicate it is something else? (I tried plugging into a different UPS)

Update: It was not the power supply. Swapped supply with another machine and it seems to be something else. Any ideas?

  • Intel Xserve/Cluster node

Are there any plans for a quad xserve and/or cluster node? We are looking into buying some machines for rendering soon, and the G5s are much more powerful right now, but the cluster nodes would look quite nice in our rack

Apple have not announced the next revision of the XServe, nor whether they'll be faster G5 or Intel processor-based.
Since Apple haven't announced it, no one here can tell you what any revision will look like, nor when it will be available.

  • Xserve Cluster node does not (really) switch on

    Hi.
I've got a pretty strange problem.
Today, after a long break, I have tried to switch on my Xserve G5 cluster node. The yellow ID light was constantly on, the power light was white, machine was powered on, and nothing happened. It did not boot, did not fail -- just sat there with both lights on.
Then, I tried to get into OF by using panel lights method -- it didn't work. No matter how long I was keeping status button pressed after a power on, nothing happened -- none of the activity lights were on or flashing.
Next thing I tried to do was to reset a PMU.
After that the situation is exactly the same except that the power light is no longer on -- although the machine starts up and the status light is on. I am still not able to enter any OF commands using front panel.
All in all, it looks like the bootstrap processor is on, but none of the G5s is getting up (for example, even if I take out all of the memory, nothing changes and no failures are indicated)
    Any ideas?

    Try this:
1 - Remove the battery from the machine for 24 hours. Replace.
    2 - Reset the PMU.
    3 - Try to boot.
If you still have a problem, disconnect the firewire cable from the front panel. Try to boot.
If you STILL have a problem, you're at the hardware change stage. It could be a number of problems, but it's likely either the main logic board, the power supply, or the front panel board.

  • SOA Cluster: Managed Server startup issue

    Hi,
I did the SOA clustering as follows:
    10.111.122.133 – Admin Server and soa_server1
    10.111.122.136 – soa_server2
Configured "soadomain" that contains Admin Server, soa_server1 and soa_server2.
used pack and unpack to replicate domain structure in the box where soa_server2 resides.
when I start managed server soa_server2, I'm getting the following issue:

    Hello Dear Poster....
Were you able to resolve your issue. I also followed the EDG and I'm in the same situation. I did everything per the instructions. The first cluster for WSM does not have any issues. But both the nodes or managed servers on the two nodes show similar behavior.

  • Connect a new imac to xserve node server 10.5

I have an old xserve cluster node server with an xserve raid attached.  I just did a fresh install of my copy of 10.5 server using target disk mode from my old macBook pro running 10.5.  I know - vintage stuff.
The server seemed to install correctly, and I was able to run through the setup just fine in target disk mode.
I can ping the server at 192.168.1.66
I can see the xServe Raid through RAID admin.
I can't seem to connect to the server at all.  Specifically using the "connect to server", it doesn't appear in the list, or even when I type in the IP or server name I entered during the setup.
    HELP!  What am I missing?

    Hi
Have you actually started any of the File Services yet? AFP, SMB etc. Moreover have you configured any shares? Without either you won't get very far.
    HTH?

  • Setup of G5 Cluster Node as a Standalone Server....

I have tried to no avail to try and setup a G5 XServer cluster node as a new Mac OS X 10.6 server. Here is where I screwed up - I pulled the drive out not realizing that creating a new partition on my Mac Book Pro would not be compatible and toasted the partition or rather made it so it was intel based instead of Power PC based and further went about installing the OS via "target mode" and went all the way through and realized that the server would not recognize it. So tonight I went back created 2 new partitions on the drive made them Power PC based but the server still does not recognize the drives when I boot up using the Option key. I get 2 buttons (refresh and I'm guessing a next) but the refresh puts up a clock for about 10 - 15 seconds and comes back and the next does nothing visible.
Here is what I have tried so far:
    1) Tried booting up with the different boot commands
    a) #3 Start up from internal drive
    b) #5 Setup in Target mode but I don't have a PowerPC Mac to install from
    3) #6 Reset NVRam
    2) Boot with the letter "c" but nothing happens other then getting to a window with a single folder that alternates between a question and the mac guy logo (sorry don't know the exact name)
    3) Boot with a Fire Wire external BluRay DVD player but does not seem to recognize it at all (could be the BluRay I guess have not thought of that)
And I'm sure I have tried a few other things but currently at wits end. I have a video card (3rd one was the charm) so I have video but have no idea how to get my Mac OS X Server software installed on this machine....
Any help or suggest would be greatly appreciated - oh I'm sure by now you know I'm new to Macs - I was an old Apple ][e guy but have been on PCs since the late 80's and finally got back to Apple - love them.

I have tried to no avail to try and setup a G5 XServer cluster node as a new Mac OS X 10.6 server.
    Stop right there.
10.6 is Intel-only. It won't boot a PowerPC-based server. It doesn't matter about the disk format, or anything else. 10.5.x is as far as you can go with this machine.

  • Cluster node as a server

Is setting up a cluster node as a stand alone file server possible? What would it take?

Main concern is if there is a firmware stop point that expects a physical or logical link to a normal server before a cluster node will boot
OK, I'm confused. What makes you think a cluster node isn't a normal server?
The only difference between the XServe Cluster Node and the XServe (at least, the PowerPC one it's based on) is the single drive bay (vs.3) and lack of optical drive. That's it. It comes with the same version of the OS. The same ports, runs the same apps and does the same thing as the non-cluster node version.
Can a cluster node be put into firewire mode with the T option, followed by a drive restore from a pre-configured Mac X server disk image....avoiding all the command line stuff. Or for that matter...just wapping out the drive with a pre-configured Mac X server drive?
Sure. The only thing you can't do it put a second drive inside the machine since, by definition, it only has a single drive bay.

  • Cluster node addition fails on cleanup

We have a 2 node cluster setup already
    (2) HP BL460c G8 servers connected to a VNX5300 SAN (Nodes 1 & 2)
    Server 2012 Datacenter installed
    Quarum: Node + Disk
all failover tests went perfectly and all VMs are healthy
Verification on the cluster show some warnings but no failures
We have rebuilt a server (node 3) renamed it and have run a single machine verification test to see if it is suitable for clustering. it succeeded with minor warnings
We ran verification on all three machines and received the formentioned warnings but no game stoppers, however when trying to add the host to the cluster we get the following error in the logs:
WARN mscs::ListenerWorker::operator (): ERROR_TIMEOUT(1460)' because of '[FTI][Initiator] Aborting connection because NetFT route to node <machine name> on virtual IP fe80::cdf2:f6ea:5ce:5f9c:~3343~ has failed to come up.'
This happens after the node is added to the cluster but reports a failure on cleanup processes and reverts everything back. I have done all of this under my domain_admin account.
before and after the attempt to add the NetFT adapter is in media disconnect, during the attempts it does pull down a 169 address as it is supposed to
    Node 3 Networking breakdown
The new host uses an Intel/HP NC365T Quard port adaptor
port 1: Mgmt : Static assignment subnet 1
port 2: VM net: Static assignment sibmet 2
port 3: Heartbeat: assigned via DHCP subnet 1 pool (we have attempted the above with this disabled as well)
NCU is not installed for the adapter and bridging in server 2012 is not enabled.
I am at a loss, and would appreciate any additional help as i have spent 3 days researching this to try and find the cause.

    Hi,
The error message mentioned an IPv6 address, have you enable IPv6 network for the cluster?
Check the IPv6 network configuration in the 3rd node server, what’s the status, enabled or disabled?
When two or more cluster nodes are running IPv6 for heartbeat communications, they will require any additional nodes that join to also running IPv6. If the node server has IPv6 disabled, it will fail to join.
Also whether these cluster node server has antivirus software installed, you may temporarily disable it and rejoin the new node.
Check that and give us feedback for further troubleshooting, for more information please refer to following MS articles:

    Hi Roderick Lyons,
Could you tell us the exact URL “above thread” I am not very sure which thread you meaning.
Please offer more information about your environment, such as, the DC server edition, the cluster node server edition.
If you are 2003 and 2012R2 mixed DC environment please restart your cluster node then do the further monitor.

Do I need to install content server standalone for every node with IntradocDir different to clusternodeIntradocDir before going to install cluster server
    I have
    Second
When I try to install cluster server this error displayed to me
    D:\CS10gR3\UCM\ContentServer\win32>Installer -set-ClusterNodeIntradocDir=f:/oracle/ucm/server/stelletnt/ucm01 -set-ClusterNodeName=ucm01 -set-ClusterNodeAddress

    The file wait.dat wasn't removed.
I find release note that describe problem with -set- it correct to set and still same error appears

  • Reformatting a XServe G5 Cluster Node

I got my hands on a pair of G5 cluster nodes (the ones with a single drive bay and no optical) and I need to intall Mac OSX server on it. I tried removing the hard drive and using my macBook Pro to install to it, but I can't install mac Os X using the apple partition map, since I am working from and intel machine.
The G5 Cluster node has no video card so I can't even plug in my external reader and install it from there.
A Little Help Please? I am not a server guy, I'm a video guy but this happens to have fallen into my hands.
    Thanks,
    Charles

    Hey Chuck,
You can install whatever partition map you need from the OS X Server installer. Before you begin the installation, go to "Utilities" and open Disk Utility.
Select the server's hard drive (be careful NOT to select your MacBook's drive, you don't want to erase that). Go to the "Partition" tab. Select "1 Partition" from the Volume Scheme popup. Then click on the "Options" button and and select "Apple Partition Map". Hit Apply. This should ensure that your XServe has the appropriate boot record.

  • Is cluster node g5 2.0 capable of being a parts machine for g5 normal serve

Is cluster node g5 2.0 capable of being a parts machine for g5 normal serve?
Is the power supply, motherboard, CPU, memory, etc the same?
I have a g5 that was taken out of service for 3 weeks and when put back in service does nothing at all when powering up....no sounds..no lights...nothing. In another thread checking the PRAM was suggested. Someone else suggested swapping out the power supply. One thing may need to another and I may need a parts machine. Will this approach work? Is a cluster node different only in case style....everything else the same?

    Hi
I think you should be all right as there is a logic board variant that is common to both - 661-3153. However there are 3 different EEE codes for this part number so double check first. You could call your nearest Apple Authorized Repair Specialist and they should be able to tell you based on the Serial Numbers of both units. Typically this number will begin with CK number.
There are minor differences between the two as you have probably noticed. For example the XServe G5 comes with an optical drive whereas the Cluster Node does not. Similarly the XServe G5 has a three headed hard drive cable whereas for the cluster node its a single connector.
    Hope this helps, Tony

  • Cluster Node as XRAID server

Does anyone know if it is possible to use a dual 2.0 G5 Cluster Node as a head server for an XRAID? I would like to have a monitor attached also. I know this will require filling both PCI slots (one video card and one fiber card). Just wondering if there are any issues with that config.

    Nah, it will work.
    Things to note:
    * Cluster node only has one drive. If it goes, there's no mirror to fail over to.
    * Cluster node comes with a 10-client version of OS X. If you're going to use it as a file server, hopefully there aren't many clients.
    * No CD/DVD drive on the cluster node.
But otherwise no physical reason it won't work.

  • Distributed Transaction Coordinator not displaying remotely on a server core cluster node..

We setup a server core single node cluster (W2012 R2).  The MS DTC is running, and the Distributed Transaction Coordinator firewall rules are enabled.  I can connect to the firewall rules and compmgmt.msc remotely for this server.  When
I attempt to connect to the Component Services Management console with this server, the MS DTC object is not displayed.  Only the COM+ applications are displayed.   We've setup other server core instances with out clustering and DTC is displayed.

    Hi Steve,
We just finished the local test and found this behavior is by design. It’s expected that we can’t see the DTC remotely from component services for a cluster node.
In my lab, 2012R2 node3 is a single node cluster and has DTC role.
