G5 xserve: How do I boot from a FireWire device ?

Hi.
I have a PowerPC G5 server WITHOUT a keyboard/display and have just installed Leopard 10.5.1.
After setting up Leopard, I made a backup copy of the server HD onto a Lacie FireWire hard-drive device connected to the FireWire 400 port on the front-panel using Carbon Copy Cloner v3.
The backup appeared to work fine.
However, when I tried to boot from the FireWire device by holding down the system identified button at the same time as the on/standby button and then selecting Light 4 (to quote page 65 of the G5 User Guide… “bypass the current startup disk and start up from any other available startup disk”) nothing happened. Instead, the fans just got louder and louder and louder and louder, with the occasional flash of FireWire device and HD lights. I switched it off after 10 minutes and re-booted as normal from the HD device.
Any suggestions ?
Thanks in advance,
john

Tony,
Having thought about this and read Apple's article "how to use FireWire target disk mode" (http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=58583), let me play back what I think have to do...
Assumptions...
a) A working Leopard system.
b) I want to go back to yesterday's backup.
c) I can't use Time Machine as it's an "Advanced" install.
d) My backup is done via Carbon Copy Clone onto my external FireWire device.
Is this what I would do... ?
1) Get my PowerBook G4 laptop, which is also running Leopard !
2) Switch off the Xserve G5.
3) Connect the FireWire backup to THE LAPTOP !
4) Connect the laptop to the Xserve using a FireWire cable.
5) Switch on the G5 and hold down the system identifier button.
6) When the lights rotate select Light 5 "Begin target disk mode".
7) On the laptop an icon would appear which is the Xserve HD.
8) Using the laptop, I then copy from the FireWire backup to the Xserve HD icon.
(I guess, as the fans may be running flat out at this point !)
9) After the backup then eject the Xserve HD icon.
10) Disconnect FireWire cable.
11) Re-boot Xserve
12) Should be running yesterday's backup.
13) Relax !
Blimey !

  • I purchased an hp external cd drive, how can i boot from it? setup does not show it being connected

When i connect the external drive it is being connect to a usb port.  When i go into the setup of the laptop it does not show an external drive being connected to the usb port.  My cd drive that came with the laptop does work, i tried it in my laptop, but on my daughters machine the cd drive is not being shown on the computer or in Device manager.  I upgrade out laptops from windows vista 32 to windows 7. The drive was working and one day my daughter went to go burn a cd and thats when we found out it is not showing on the computer. Her p/n is FE653UA#ABA - dv6910US.  I tried everything to get the drive to show up on the computer but had no luck, that is why i purchased an external drive. The drive i purchased is an HP 8x external dlim muliformat dvd/cd writer.
I now need to figure out how I can boot from this external drive, can  anyone help me?

    Hi,
Have you read the Windows7 Upgrade Guide for dv6000/dv9000 models so generously written and provided to the community by Expert member Daniel_Potyrala?
Have you checked in the Device Manager to asee if all devices have drivers loaded?
Have you tried the Microsoft Fixit for DVD/CD drives?

  • How do I boot from an external drive?

I've just Carbon Cloned my 60GB drive to a firewire external drive. I'm about to replace the 60GB with a 160GB drive and the CCC instructions say boot from the external drive I'd just created once the new disk is installed. Then CCC the cloned drive back to the new hard drive.
So, how do I boot from an external drive? Do I have load anything to the new drive? Will the macbook detect the external drive and boot from that? Or what??????
    Thanks
    Dick

Thanks DWB. Being the rash impetuous guy I am I didn't wait for replies and just switched on the macbook after installing the new disk (which was so easy it was unbelievable - had to go and buy a a little torx bit though) to see what would happen.
Blow me down with a feather if it didn't just boot off the external drive all by itself :-O It did come up with the disk was unverified and I could see it in FINDER and I was prseented with a screen to ERASE/RESTORE etc.
When I went to CCC the external drive back to the new hard drive it didn't give show me the new hard drive so I guessed I'd have to do something to format (?) the hard drive.
I don't know if I did the right thing but I went to disk utilities and chose ERASE in the vague hope it would maybe format the disk in some way.
Seems to work now and the CCC replaced the system perfectly as far as I can see.
Basically very impressive all round. Piece of proverbial to replace the disk and CCC made life so easy.
    Thanks again.
    Cheers

  • How do I boot from Windows disk?

Recently, I have gotten the STOP Error c00021a Fatal System Error. I have tried all the built in resources, which have all failed. I want to boot from my Windows CD under bootcamp, but the "Press any key to boot from CD..." message never appears. How do I boot from the CD? I can't get to the login, and when I get to the command prompt under repair your computer, select the disk drive, and run setup.exe, there is no "Repair your computer" option available, only "Install" and "What to know before installing". Is it possible? Some one said to use a USB keyboard, but I don't have one.

Hold option when computer starts up.
Are you selecting the windows hard disk or cd?  Make sure you choose the cd as the repair option is not avaliable on the hard disk (pre-copied installer)

  • Tiger won't boot from external firewire

Installed 10.4.3 DVD on clean external firewire (Extended/Journaled). Before I installed Tiger, I ran updates, and repaired permissions. Everything looked good to me.
I'm keeping Panther on main system drive for now - so from System Preferences>Startup Disk>the external tiger drive appears and I select it. Then I select restart and the promt confirms that the computer will restart with 10.4.3. Looks good so far.
After restart, I'm looking at the desktop, guess what? It's 10.3.9, not 10.4.3. How could that be?
Also, when I restart and hold down the Option key for Startup Manager options - the firewire drive does not appear as an option.
So Tiger appears in System Preferences>Startup Disc as an option, but the option doesn't actually work, and that drive does not appear at all in (Option key) startup manager.
I'm Indexing the firewire drive now (OMG is that slow or what!), but I'm not expecting this to make any difference. I'm stumped. What am I overlooking? Please advise.
    Muchas Gracias

    R MacCool,
"What if I manually drag and drop the 4 folders (from the Tiger DVD) onto a second internal SATA drive without partitioning the drive first? Will I be able to boot off an internal SATA drive like that? When I installed Tiger on the external firewire I see that 4 folders are there - I could drag them from that drive onto the second internal drive. Does that work?"
No, this does not work. MacOS X consists of more then 20,000 invisible files, most of them somehow connected and referencing each other.
MacOS X DOES boot from external firewire drives, both hard disks and DVD drives.
Why don't you just upgrade your current 10.3.9 to Tiger using this procedure: 10.4 Tiger Upgrade: Decision tree+Checklist?
"Why does Tiger seem to install correctly, then System Pref>Startup Disc recognizes it, but then after selecting 10.4.3 it restarts into 10.3.9?"
I am not a technician, but it could be that the firmware is the primary source for connectivity. After MacOS X has booted the internal firewire drivers might take over and "overrule" the firmware (this is why you can see it in the startup disk preference pane) but at boot-time it exclusively depends on the firmware. This theory might be completely wrong though.

  • Can Satellite L40-139 boot from a USB device?

    Hello,
I have a new L40-139. Looking through the BIOS I cannot find an option to boot from a USB device such as a USB HDD or USB flash drive. Could someone confirm if teh L40-139 can boot from USB, and is so how to configure the BIOS for this.
If it cannot does anybody know if there are plans for a BIOS update that would allow this?
I have to admit that while I like the L40, I am disappointed at how limited the BIOS is.
    Thanks,
    R

    Hello
I am not 100% sure but, as far as I know, you can not use USB HDD as first bootable device. USB FDD yes, but with external HDD it will not work.

  • Booting from a firewire drive with a bluetooth keyboard

I need to get my computer (iMac G5) to boot from a firewire drive that does have OSX installed on it. I understand from other posts that a bluetooth keyboard will not help seeing as the handshake does not occur until the operating system boots as well. Is there any way to get this to work? I have tried selecting it as the startup disk in System Preferences, but that hasn't seemed to work. I do NOT have a USB keyboard anywhere that I can use (away from home in the boondocks).
    Any ideas?

Does System Preferences allow you to select the FW drive as the start up volume? If so, you then press the button to restart, correct? What exactly happens after that?
What version of OS X do you have on the iMac (ii) the FW drive?
Have you booted from the FW before? What kind of drive is it? How did you install OS X on it?
If the FW and iMac have the same version of OS X on, try this:
    open /Applications/Utilities/Disk Utility
select the FW drive at the left
    choose "repair disk"
    choose "repair permissions"
    Try again.

I do not know about Disk Warrior but if you have a compatible OSX on an external HDD you certainly can boot the MBP.  Use startup manager:

  • Boot from external Firewire Drive-cannot repair or optimize internal drive.

    Hi all
Connected my new 300 GB Seagate External Firewire Hard Drive today.
Installed Tiger from DVD. Updated to 10.4.3.
Installed Tech Tool Pro 4. Updated to 4.1.1.
    Booted from External Firewire Drive.
Disk Utility cannot Verify or Repair internal drive. Does not say or do anything.
Tech Tool Pro cannot repair volume or optimize. Says, "Cannot Unmount Volume."
Is there a fix for this?
    Thank you for the help!
    Jeff
eMac 800 nVidia.   Mac OS X (10.4.3)   160 GB Internal HD. Pioneer Superdrive. 1 GB RAM.

    Hi
I did name the new external completely different from the internal.
After booting from the external Firewire Hard Drive, I tried running Disk Utility and Tech Tool Pro from both drives. No matter which drive I run the Utilities from the same things happen every time...
Nothing happens when trying to use Disk Utility to Verify Volume on internal eMac Drive.
Tech Tool Pro says, "Cannot unmount volume" when trying to check Volume or Optimize internal drive.

  • Portege A100 PPA10A - Will BIOS update allow to boot from a USB device

    Hi,
I have an Old Portege A100, Model: PPA10A-0002LP, but I can't seem to find that model on any Toshiba website, closest I've seen is the " PPA10A-0002L".
I'm wanting to see if there's a BIOS update that will allow me to Boot from a USB Device.
The issue I am having is that I need to reinstall Windows, but the CD ROm cant read discs.
It does Network Booting PXE, but i'm new to this sort of thing and have absolutly no idea what to do there.
    Any help would be great,
    Thanks

    Hi
Portege A100 seems to be developed only for Australian market.
As you said there is a Portege A100 PPA10A-0002L model number listed on the Toshiba Australian page but the Portege A100 PPA10A-0002LP belongs to the same series which is PPA10A.
So in my opinion the BIOS should work too.
Anyway, I doubt that the BIOS update will add any further booting options.
Usually the BIOS support the booting from CD/DVD drive, HDD, LAN and USB FDD.
It should be possible to boot from a bootable diskette using an USB FDD drive.
I doubt you would be able to boot from USB ODD since this Portege A100 supports an internal CD/DVD drive.

  • How do i print from my mobile device

how do i print from my mobile device?

    Hi,
Your question can take many days to answer because this depends on your printer and also your mobile device(s).
    1. Firstly, you need to have a printer which supports this. You can check from the following list:
       http://h10025.www1.hp.com/ewfrf/wc/document?cc=hr&dlc=hr&docname=c02814760&lang=hr&lc=en&product=391...
    2. Secondly, your mobile device(s) must also support this. Please use information from the following link:

  • XServe G5 doesn't boot from OSX 10.5 Server Install DVD

After a long and rather happy life with 10.4 Server on my XServe G5 I decided I'd like to check out the ical Server and the other goodies in 10.5 Server.
I still have installer DVD form my maintenance I bought with the XServe.
XServe G5 10.4.11 runs headless, I have ARD
Admin computer is a MBP 17" unibody (INTEL) runing OSX 10.6.2
    A few problems:
Admin tools 10.5 cannot be installed on my MBP -
I downloaded the Admin Tools for 10.6 they 'should' work for this but
I wasn't able to connect to the XServe due to other problems:
    Here what I tried:
Insert OSX10.5Server Install DVD into XServe G5 -> gets ejected (no clue why or where to check why)
Insert OSX10.5Server Install DVD into external FW400 DVD drive -> is mounting, can be chosen as startup drive but reboot always ends up booting from installed 10.4 Server OS.
I also tried doubleclicking the "INstall OSX Server 10.5" Icon when the DVD was mounted but same failure, XServe boots from internal system rather than from install DVD.
Any ideas what I might be doing wrong ?
Any hints how to "service" the existing istallation so it will allow to boot from external (or better internal) DVD drive ?
    Any help is greatly appreciated.

The trouble with a headless G5 is you can't see what happens when holding down the option key at boot but an external DVD-drive (if needed) must be firewire on a G5.
An Open Firmware reset sometimes make the computer find firewire drives afterwards.
We have a customer running iCal server for 10-15 people on such a machine but the RAM is "upped" to 5GB. It is also running FileMaker server 10 and filesharing. + Retropect 6.x "Backupserver".
You can run with non-ECC RAM (PC3200) in that Xserve.
It could work OK but expect 100% CPU periodically mostly because of running Python scripts for iCal server.
Keep calendars fresh - don't import/save/keep old events for years back in them.
10.5 iCal server It can't handle too many events in one celandar (1500 max I belive someone found out by testing). I can take "forever" syncing calendar with many events.
iCal server in 10.6 is revised for less resource use.

  • How can I boot from my recovery dvd to reach the system recovery C: on a extern hard disc

I think a have a virus in my notebook Pavilion 15 and want to restore my C partition with a system back up. I made this system back up a month ago and it is stored on a extern hard disc. I have also made a recovery dvd. How can I boot my notebook from my dvd to start the procedure? I have 2 partions on my notebook. The second partition contains My Documents.
    Thanks in advance.

It is unlikely that the back-up of the system recovery, that you have stored on an external drive, will be useful in recovering your computer. Please see HP PCs - Performing an HP System Recovery (Windows 8), for instructions on using the HP Recovery Disc set your created earlier. Typically, the disc set is 4 to 6 DVDs.
