  • BootCamp Advice on gaming uses and which Windows OS to use.

I am about to purchase a new MacBook Pro 13.3 inch with 2.4Ghz, 4GB RAM, 320M GeForce NVIDEA card, 256MB.
I am going to use it as a hub in university but also I am going to use it as a gaming device. I am using the Mac OSX to run the intensive RTS games (e.g Total War games) but I would also like to know if I can use BootCamp to run windows games on the Mac too, so I can play a wider library (E.g. FPS games also found on the consoles, RPGs and so on).
If this is the case, which windows OS should I use? XP, Vista, or Windows 7, to get the best gaming experience from my specs. Note that price is not a deal-breaker but it is a disadvantage, so if for example XP was only marginally worse than Windows 7, I would probably take it and avoid unneeded cost.
Just as a note, I am unlikely to use Bootcamp for anything else very intensive, just if I have any other compatibility issues with programs I need to run.

Supposing I am not going to buy new games but merely build up a library of current ones, is Window 7 64bit worth the price?
As in does it run the games significantly better for any reason? And does anybody know which is preferable when tackling the problem of bootcamp overheating Macbook Pros when playing games?
Sounds like you are rationalizing why you should stay with an older OS. I use Windows 7 64bit every day running in BootCamp for work. It runs quick, is extremely stable (leaps and bounds better than XP or Vista), it is more secure, is easier to network, I never experience instability, and I never have overheating issues. I don't know what running games "significantly better" means. The games will run as they were designed to run.
The advantages of Windows 7 over XP or Vista are well documented. But if you want to stay with an older OS that is your choice. I opted to go with the better OS.

  • Buying new iMac 3.06 which windows program for boot camp to get

I am buying a iMac 3.06 and their is a deal to get boot camp with several windows options:
Vista, XP versions either standard or premium or pro versions.
I am retired and do not have any need for windows. once in a while someone sends something that I cannot open in e-mail and my grandson has a PC with standard vista.
If it were not a nominal charge I would not even consider it.
Any thoughts about which windows program to go with,
    Greg

Your system and needs sounds like you might want to forgo native dual-boot of Windows and invest in Parallels or Fusion, both are virtual machines so you can run Windows inside OS X, side by side.
Or you might just need a program like OpenOffice, NeoOffice. I'd wait and see if OS X can help you manage files. Or tell us what type of files you need to view. Your iMac comes with iWork which can open some files. You may not need Office for Mac or Windows.
XP tends to be common choice and just 32-bit with SP2 (or later).

  • How to determine which Windows application has focus

I'm new to JAVA and new to programming. I hope someone will help me out. I'm trying to write a simple JLink program (JLink is a JAVA API for Pro|Engineer, a CAD design program). In part of this program I need to determine if Pro|E has focus. Is there some way to use JAVA to determine which actively running Windows application has focus?
I basically want my program to pause when focus changes to another program. For example: While Pro|E is active and has focus the program runs, when I select an Excel window, or Outlook, or Notepad or any other window my program will pause until focus is returned. I just need to determine which window within Windows has focus.
I hope I have explained this properly. I searched the internet for an answer but found nothing. I did come across some references to JNI, but I'm not sure what that is or how to use it.
    Thank you!

I just need to determine which window within Windows has focus. No, you don't. All you need to determine is whether your application has the focus. If it doesn't, then some other application does, but it's really irrelevant which one does. All that's relevant is that your application doesn't have the focus and hence it should pause.

  • Which Windows OS should I chose to run Autocad/Revit?

I purchased a Mac Book Pro for my son in college (OS 10.5). He needs to run Autocad & Revit for his classes. We've decided to use boot camp instead of parallels or other options. My question is how do we know which windows OS to chose? I've heard Vista has had problems. is there a reason to use a professional version as opposed to standard? All help is appreciated. Steve.

If I was starting out, and new I had to run Windows natively...
    a) Vista has been out about two years
    b) there are issues with anything
    c) does Revit and Autocad recommend any hardware spec
I would have gotten a PC with Intel Core i7 920, 6GB DDR3 memory, high end graphics, and either Home Premium 64-bit or Ultimate. Price: $1300 plus cost of hard drive, graphics, and OS, that would plow through and flatten any work load.

  • Bootcamp on Lion--but which Windows 7 ?

I'm finally considering a bootcamp install of Windows 7 and am completely overwhelmed by the plethora of different Windows 7 versions available... Professional? Home? Ultimate? 32-bit? 64-bit?
I intend to do this mostly to play games—at this point, specifically Rift and EvE.
    My system:
    late 2009 27" iMac
    2.8 GHz Intel Core i7
    4 GB 1067 MHz DDR3
ATI Radeon HD 4850 512 MB
    OS X 10.7.2
with well over 460 GB HD space to spare.
If anyone could take a moment and give me their recommendation on which Windows flavor I should choose, I would greatly appreciate the help!
    Thanks!

    I'm just a home/gamer type Windows user.
I have W7 Home Premium 64bit and works fine for me. I was worried about some of my older stuff but haven't had an issue yet, i've had it about 8 months now.
W7 Pro (for $100 more) which I think is just Home Premium with XP built in so you can go into XP mode to run some older stuff that won't work in W7. And from what I can figure out Ultimate, etc, is set up more for business's.
Windows 64bit you can use ALL the available ram and 32bit is maxed out between 2 and 3 gigs no matter how much ram you have installed. Most of the Retail/Upgrade versions have 32bit and 64bit installers combined so you can use either one. If the applications are written for a 64bit OS then it will run that much faster.
    My 2 cents worth anyway....

  • How do I have 2 windows, but select which window to open, e.g. a personal window vs. a business window?

When I open Firefox I want to be able to select which window I want to open. Each window will have it's own set of tabs, which can change as I need to. This allows me to open Firefox with either a "personal" window or a "business" window or a "Social media" window etc. How can I do this?

  • Which windows for my mac ?

    Hi Guys !
Just a silly question (i've never expecting to ask this) which windows do i have to install on my macbook Pro ?
    MacBook Pro 17' / 2.8 Ghz Intel Core 2 Duo / 4 Go Ram
    Mac OSX 10.6.6
(Sorry for my english, i'm only french you know)

You don't have to install Windows at all. In fact, your computer will run better if you don't.
However, if you do, it depends on the technology you use to run Windows. If you use Apple's BootCamp software to create a dual-boot system (one where you choose at boot time whether you want to run Windows or OS X), then you are limited to Windows XP (either version), Windows Vista (any version), or Windows 7 (any version).
If you install Windows in a VM (using Parallels for Mac, or VMWare Fusion), then it's not important. You can install everything from MS-DOS to Windows 7 Enterprise without a problem (and, for that matter, Linux, OpenSolaris, FreeBSD, etc.). Because of my work, I have VMs for CentOS, RHEL5, Windows XP Pro, Windows 2000, and Windows 7 Enterprise installed and running under OS X.

  • Help, which windows Service msut be on to run Adobe Bridge CS3?

    hi all,
I'm having trouble opening Adobe Bridge CS3, theres a windows popup that says "Adobe Bridge has encountered a problem and needs to close" error message when i try to start.
I can run the other Adobe Cs3 applications fine, i've been playing around with the disabling of windows services to increase bootup time. i'm afraid i may have accidentally disabled something necessary
pls advice on how to get it working.. i'm on win xp pro sp2
    thanks

When you get the "Bridge has encountered an error" popup box, check the technical info hyperlink to see what's the problem. It may point to a DLL that had an error.
From there, check the web to see what that DLL relates to, which may or may not give you a lead. Maybe something that needs to be running in WinXP, maybe a 3rd party product that needs to be fixed/removed/re-installed.
Why do I say this? I had the same issue on Bridge after getting the trial version. Worked for a while, then suddenly stopped working with the same startup dialog box and a quick shutdown. Digging a bit as above pointed to a DLL that was related to Quicktime. I went to the Apple site and downloaded/installed the latest version of Quicktime, and the Brige problem was cured.

  • Path to file from which window has been opened

If one opens a TextEdit file on a volume other than the startup volume, a window opens using the TextEdit application installed on the Startup volume. (At least, that's my conclusion as to what happens).
At that point, both 'windows of application "TextEdit"' or 'documents of application "TextEdit"' yield a wealth of information about the opened window, including (in different ways) the path to the originating file.
There are other applications for which that path information can be determined in a similar fashion.
But for other applications (most, it seems) the path to the originating file cannot be obtained in this manner. For example, if a Safari webarchive file is opened, much or most of the information about the resultant window is in 'windows of ...' or in 'documents of ...' -- but path information is typically listed as "empty" or "missing value."
How would one go about getting the path information in these cases? Basically, what's known initially is:
    1) The name of the window
    2) The application that opened the window
Information that can be added easily includes the window id and a few other things.

99.9% of what you see in Safari isn't file based, so it makes no sense for Apple to implement a file-based hook to its documents - there simply isn't a file to reference.
In the cases where you are opening a file on disk then the URL property will give you that information - if it begins with 'file://' then the window is pointing to a disk-based file, if it's 'http://' or "https://' then it's web-based.
Other applications will have similar issues depending on how they work. Take Mail.app, for example - mail messages are not stored in individual files, so it isn't possible to get the file reference to an email message. So it all depends on the app.
