G505 How to do a Clean Install Windows 8.1 Core instead of Windows 8.0 Core?

Hi,
I have G505 with Widows 8.0 core installed. I would like to do a clean install of Windows 8.1 core. So I installed but it ask for the activation key which I do not have. I thought we can use the same activation key for Windows 8.1 core. How do you activate it if it is possible.
Or do I have to install Windows 8.0 core and then upgrade to Windows 8.1. Unfortunately I do not have a copy of Windows 8.0 core.
Thanks for any help.

hi magi44ken,
This might be because the WInodws 8.1 installer you used is a retail version and not an OEM from Lenovo.
The path should be Windows 8.0 then upgrade it. this way the Key inside the BIOS will be recognized and reactivated.
Try Doing a Onekey Recovery and see if the Recovery Partition is still active to revert the system back to Windows 8.0. Turn off the computer and hit the Movo button , see if recovery will be available.
If not, you will need to call Lenovo Technical Support to Obtain a copy of the Windows 8.0 install, (fees may apply).

  • How I do a clean install of Win 8.1

Since my initial post        "Why is option to create striped volume grayed out in disk management?"
I have seen numerous threads re doing a clean install of Win 8.1. So I'm re-posting the info I got from Puget Systems  http://www.pugetsystems.com/ when I RMA'ed the ZenBook back to The Egg and got a laptop that boots in 1.7 seconds and works.
Edit !That was time before any progs installed. Now that I everything on it's about 20 from hit restart to waiting on me enter P/W.
Regardless of your system the advice I got from PS before the system was even built here in the US should apply as I ordered it W/O an OS.
D/L Drivers from the systems Mfg. site. If it's a DIY Lego then from the Mfg. of products, i.e. chipset, video card, audio, etc.
    When Windows begins install;
    Choose Custom Install.
    Uncheck Let Windows load drivers.
Uncheck any other options you don't want as well. I unchecked about everything and yet*
    When OS is installed
Go into add/remove features and enable .NET Framework 3.5.
Restart Then load Drivers. As mentioned in other post I had already drivers Dl'd from Puget's site
and had in separate folder on flash drive.
This is by far the cleanest, best running Windows version I ever had on a system and have been installing since Win 95 A.
Hope this helps some of those who are having Clean Install issues.

Thanks for your sharing on how to clean install Windows 8.1.
I am not sure about what you mean about NSA, would you please give us the full name?
For the IE 11 favorite, if you use Microsoft account to log into this computer and this account is used on other Windows 8/8.1 computer with Sync settings open, the favorites will be automatically synced here.

  • How to do a clean install with lion after it is already installed?

how to do a clean install with lion after it is already installed?

Install or Reinstall Lion from Scratch
If possible backup your files to an external drive or second internal drive.
    Boot to the Recovery HD:
Restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the COMMAND and R keys until the menu screen appears. Alternatively, restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the OPTION key until the boot manager screen appears. Select the Recovery HD and click on the downward pointing arrow button.
    Erase the hard drive:
Select Disk Utility from the main menu and click on the Continue button.
After DU loads select your hard drive (this is the entry with the mfgr.'s ID and size) from the left side list. Note the SMART status of the drive in DU's status area.  If it does not say "Verified" then the drive is failing or has failed and will need replacing.  SMART info will not be reported  on external drives. Otherwise, click on the Erase tab in the DU main window.
Set the format type to Mac OS Extended (Journaled.) Click on the Erase button and wait until the process has completed.
Quit DU and return to the main menu.
Reinstall Lion: Select Reinstall Lion and click on the Install button.
Note: You can also re-download the Lion installer by opening the App Store application. Hold down the OPTION key and click on the Purchases icon in the toolbar. You should now see an active Install button to the right of your Lion purchase entry. There are situations in which this will not work. For example, if you are already booted into the Lion you originally purchased with your Apple ID or if an instance of the Lion installer is located anywhere on your computer.

  • How I was able to install Windows 10 on HP Stream 13 (32GB SSD)

I wanted to install windows 10 on my Stream 13 (only 32 GB SSD). With the recovery partition and windows 8.1 plus all updates i was left with not nearly enough space to install Windows 10.  After a few failures I was able to make this work and this is how. My solution to the problem. This is not to say that a easier one may turn up but this is the only thing that worked for me. *Compleate a fresh recovery to create as clean of a install as posible*Install all updates*use the Media creation tool to create a USB for the instal.https://www.microsoft.com/en-us/software-download/windows10*On another USB I created a copy of the system recovery (because my goal was to delete the recovery partition after installing windows 10 and save some much needed space)*Click on the setup on the USB made from the media creation tool (dont boot in to it this time and run a full clean install or windows will not recognise your 8.1 key). follow the directions to upgrade your pc. *Somewhere here i was told that i didnt have enough space on my  computer but was given an option to select an additional drive or USB to compleate the upgrade. I used my micro SD but had the option to use a USB thumb drive as well.  Just plug one in with enough space, refresh and select the one you want.*once done I was running a upgraded version of windows 10. and all was well.  Now at this point my hardware was recognized for Windows 10 and I can reinstall all I want.*Personally at this point i didnt want the 7GB windows 8 recovery paertition just sitting there. *I now ran the USB made by the media creation tool to run a full clean install of windows 10. During that process I was able to format the C: drive and additionaly the recovery partition (but not remove it yet)  There are plenty of youtube videos on how to run this clean install with step by step help.*once windows 10 was back up I used DISKPART to remove the recovery partition and then went back in to Disk Management to expand the main partition to fill the remaining empty space on the SSD.  Again there are many great videos and posts on how to run DISKPART and Disk Management. Sounds rough but was very simple and done very fast. *Lastly ran all updates and followed a little guide from HP on how to make sure you have all the right GP drivers up and going on a Clean install. near the bottom you will see Steps to take after upgrading to windows 10. *Now DO NOT LOOSE that USB recovery tool you made because that can always get you back to factory settings.  http://h20565.www2.hp.com/hpsc/doc/public/display?sp4ts.oid=5071171&docId=emr_na-c04734799&docLocale=en_US  Sorry if any of this is unclear but when I was trying to get this to work I could nto find anything with the steps to take and I ended up having to use the system recovery USB i made time and time again to start again.       EDIT:  I have am HP Stream 13 that came with 8.1   The hard drive ont hese things is not large enough to compleate the upgrade to windows 10. So i preformed a clean install from a USB.  Now i have 10 and it is not activated.  NOW I read that you MUSST preform the upgrade first in order for windows to detect your hardware and register it as valis for the free windows 10.   BUT since upgrade was not posible I have a windows 8.1 key that is useless since there is no service to change the key to a windows 10 key..   This is insane. these laptops are being advertisd with the free upgrade to windows 10 yet are not able to be upgraded.  Not sure what to do now.    I am running a new HP stream 13 touchscreen with windows 8.1 I want to upgrade to windows 10 before I am back to school (before i have to install all kinds of software and files) Obciously the Stream does not have enough SSD left to preform the upgrade.  I have created a clean install USB thumb drive but am worried about using it.  From what i have read the recovery partition that is not deleteable houses files that the system accesses. When i do a Clean install wiping the C drive (but not the partition) will everything work? will i loose the use of that partition space forever?   and lastly I used a program to access my windows key since it is located in the bios not on a sticker but I want to know if anyone else has done this and did it auto detect? or did they run in to any problems.  Sorry if this is all posted somewhere else but i am not finding any information at all.  EDIT!   I do have a USB recovery that i can use if i must to windows 8.1    I installed 10 from a USB and it is workign fine other than it is now saying my KEY isnt valid for this clean install. How do i convert my 8.1 key to a key that will work for 10? I cant see myself buying a new key from microsoft when the laptop was sold with an advert saying free upgrade to 10.   It isnt posible to do a upgrade because of the space required for the upgrade to do its work. this is a real pain.

OMG, what a pain in the neck.  I bought a brand new Stream 13, got it on saturday.  Fired it up, and it immediately wants to upgrade to Win10, which is great.  But, I run it through windows update and it fails, 5 times in a row.  Doesn't really give you an explanation, except update failed.  Thanks a lot So, I download Win10 from MSFT, and put it on a USB, but that fails too, first, the machine refuses to boot off of a USB drive.  If I run the update directly (setup.exe off of the USB, it fails too, but this time telling me I don't have enough drive space. So, i called HP support, remember this PC is 5 hours old at this point.  I got the runaround like i've never seen before.   I talked to 7 different people over a 95 minute perioud, none of whom could help me.  The last person wanted me to pay for a support subscription plan.  Yeah, I am gonna do that for a $200 laptop.
At one point it gives you the option to specify another drive to store the backup of the old OS on.  I tried that, but then later in the upgrade process it says to insert removable media, with an OK and Cancel button. I assume it is looking for that other drive...But it is in there, but apparently it can't find it. So, then i downloaded the ISO from MSFT and made my own USB.  Still won't boot off of it.  Tried running setup.exe but that fails too. Then I copied all the setup files to the micro-SD, and run setup from there.  One thing that the setup does is it asks to download additional updates.  I chose NO, and what do you know, I got one of the insider builds of windows 10 (10162) installed!  But, it is very broken, and can't even get to the store. So, I go to windows update to see if it will move to 10120 (the retail build), but no luck, it tells me my account isn't signed up for windows insider (this is my daughter's PC).  So, i sign her up, but now it won't find any new updates.  SO, I log to the laptop wil MY account, and now it finds 101240!!!! But, when I try to run it, it tell me I need more free space.  now mind you, i haven't installed a single thing, haven't copied a single file, but I am several hundred megabytes short.  I did try the option with storing the old OS files on a different drive, but got the "insert removable media - Ok/Cancel" again.  Arrgggghhhh.  I have removed my daughter's login from the machine, and have now reclaimed just barely enough space to make the upgrade happy. So, this is where I am at for the moment.  Next I will try DiskPart to add the 7GB of recovery space to the C drive, i bet it works then. I give this today only, and if I can't figure out, it goes back to HP, and I'll spend a little more money and get something with more than 21GB of HDD.  Really, shouldn't HP just put the recovery partition on a USB thumb drive and include that with the PC ???? Frustrated in Denver.

  • Some issues after clean installing windows 7 pro 64bit

    Hi,
I have a couple of issues, I clean installed windows 7 pro, 64bit, (vanilla) restored my license with ABR and used system update to download all the drivers. (no issues until here) But after restarting the system, I found this issues:
    1. I have to put the bios in legacy mode for system to boot. Otherwise it gives me a "no operating system found" message. Is there any way to make a proper installation for the system to boot in UEFI and LEGACY?
    2. System update didn't install thinkvantage center. (the program that stays in the taskbar). Should this be installed manually? Or system update should have installed it?
3*. I can not use lenovo driver page of my x120e. In IE it shows me repeatedly the wizard to choose my model, although I enter the correct info there. It starts all over again and again. Tried opera, I can see the drivers page, but I can't browse, or expand none of the sections. (all I can think of this, do I need java for the page to work?)
3*. UPDATE: After installing IE 9, java and flash player, still not working. Opera too. Google Chrome works fine.           What's the matter with IE and OPERA? What component do I need to make IE work with lenovo drivers download page?
Can anyone help me? Never had to deal with these issues.
    Thanks in advance

    Hello,
Have you tried wiping the hard disk drive and reinstalling Windows 7 Professional x64 from the factory recovery discs while the BIOS is set to UEFI?  If so, did that work?

  • How to Perform a "Clean Install" - Offline installer link not working...

The thread containing - "How to Perform a Clean Install of Flash Player in Mac OS X" -  was an answer given by Mike M. several times in this forum. I attempted to access the "offline installer" link that was offered, but it does not seem to be working. Does anyone have an updated link to a functional offline installer that I can use to finally download Flash Player for Mac OS X v. 10.9.5?
I receive an error message stating "Error: Unable to proceed with the installation."
Many of the photography and game websites I use (almost all, actually) FP, and I would really love to get back to my daily routine soon!
    Best Regards,

    Hi Mel,
The correct link is posted at the bottom of the Installation problems | Flash Player | Mac page, in the 'Still having problems section'. The download links recently changed and it appears the FAQ was not updated.  I have updated the with the help page URL as it's less likely that this link will change, and if it does, a re-direct to the new location would be implemented.

How to do a clean install of yosemite (have Mavericks 10.9.5 now) and then just install certain files, apps, documents, phopt's, etc...from time machine backup?

Do a backup before doing anything.
If you want to make a clean install of Mountain Lion, boot into the Recovery Volume (command - R) on a restart, use Disk Utility to Verify/Repair  the disk and run Repair Permissions. Then erase the hard drive using Mac OS Extended (Journaled) format using the Options button. Reinstall Yosemite. Restart normally and test. Use Setup Assistant or Migration Assistant to import what you want.

  • How to do a CLEAN INSTALL of Windows 8.1 with a Windows 8 OEM Key

I have recently purchased a new C540 that has Windows 8 already installed on it.  I would like to perform a clean install of Windows 8.1 on this computer.
This is what I have done so far:
I disabled 3 things in the BIOS: IIRC, they were secure boot, quick boot, and something about "optimized" startup
I have changed my boot priority to put the CD/DVD drive first and any flashdrive 2nd
I have figured out my OEM Windows Product Key (this is for a Windows 8 Core/64 bit OS)
I have setup a flashdrive with Windows 8.1 on it
I tried to boot from the flashdrive...when I get the option to install windows 8.1, I click on it and very quickly get the following error -- "The product key entered does not match any of the Windows images available for installation. Enter a different product key."
I added a PID.txt file with my OEM product key in the Source folder of the Windows 8.1 install....I don't get the above error message immediately, but a screen comes up that asks me to enter a Product Code...my OEM product code (being for W8,  not W8.1) does not work while using a generic key (for Windows 8.1 Core) yields the same error message as above and exits the installer.
I then added an EI.CFG file that sets the edition to core, the version to OEM, and the Volume to 0...unfortunately, when trying to install Windows 8.1 it still asks me for a product key before installing...I cannot get past this screen even though (to my understanding) the EI.CFG file should cause the installer to skip asking for a product key...
It is important to me that I get to perform a CLEAN install of Windows 8.1...I do not want to upgrade through windows store...the only keys I have are a W8 Pro Retail key (for my laptop) and a W8 Core OEM key (that came with the new C540)...I am using a flashdrive to perform this since I knew I may have to add/change files like the PID and EI.CFG....
I would appreciate any help I can get in solving this problem...I am also willing to try burning an .iso with the PID and/or EI.CFG, but I'm trying to avoid trial and error with that since it is time consuming, requires an ADK, and may waste DVDs...I'd only make an .iso if (for whatever reason) that would work where a flashdrive woud not...

I have a new SSD drive and need to either migrate my old HD data, including the Windows 8.1 OS or do a a clean install.  I have obtained the ISO, prepared the boot for the flashdrive and downloaded the install software.  It asks for the product key.   I used the suggested BIOS reader and obtained "a" product key off the BIOS and used that it but (as above) it does not recognize the image.

It is a new system with little data that I need to copy. I just want the operating system.  I have the driver disc that came with it.

  • How to do a clean install of windows 10 on a different drive?

Hi all. Today I decided to make the switch to windows 10. I want to do a clean install, however, because I recently got an SSD and want to install the OS on that instead of on my hard drive. First off, do I even need my product key to do a clean install onto a new drive? I made a clone of my C: dirve just in case something goes wrong, just FYI. My SSD is 100% empty and has 110GB available on it but my main hard drive has about 400GB of stuff on it, so cloning my drive to the SSD is out of the picture.  So basically what I want to know is this: 1. Do I need to have my windows key to do a clean install of windows 10 from windows 8.1 onto a different drive.2. If not, how do I do a clean install onto a new drive3. If I need it, how do I get it? Thanks all

The easiest solution would be to back up the data you wish to keep on an external hard drive then delete that data and programs from the old hard drive so that only the OS remains.  From there use migration software from your SSD manufacturer to clone the old drive to the new SSD using a USB to SATA cable. The Windows key is embedded in the BIOS and will be recognized by the computer on any installs.  It would be advisable to retrieve your key, just in case, using Belarc Advisor which gives you all sorts of info about your computer.  Do this before doing anything.http://www.belarc.com/free_download.html  Swap your drive and be sure it is operational.  Now you may perform a clean install of the Windows 10 upgrade using a bootable ISO.  See step 5 or 6 from this tutorial:http://www.tenforums.com/tutorials/2267-windows-10-upgrade-installation.html#step3
