G505s gpu question

I just wanted to know if it's possible to change the gpu in my laptop. It has just terrible gaming performance and has the same cpu as the MSI gx70(which performs quite like a beast). So i want to change my gpu.
Solved!

hi elton305,
In addition to what Solid_Cruver have mentioned, by looking at the parts, the G505s's GPU is soldered on the motherboard.

It's possible to change this GPU but you may only change it with the same part (only professional reballing service centers does this). If you wanna upgrade the GPU, you will need to also change the motherboard (which isn't really practical).
If the lenovo unit doesn't give decent FPS while gaming, I think it would be best to invest on a new system rather than upgrading the GPU (you may opt to keep the Lenovo unit or sell it to cover the cost of your new rig).

  • New video editing system for AE, GPU questions

    Hi all,
I am about to configure a new system to use mainly for After Effects CS6, and Premiere CS6. I'm experiencing some difficulties choosing the right GPU.. If any of you could take the time to answer these question for me..it would be greatly appreciated!
    - I read the GTX 7xx with Kepler structure aren't supported/CUDA cores aren't used, is this true of do they work fine?
    - Does a good video card (with 1000+ CUDA cores) only help for speeding Ray-traced 3D, or will the overall editing experience be faster as well? ('live preview' while editing 'normal video', as well as the final render?)
    - What are the critical factors to look for in a video card for editing? (GDDR RAM, Base Clock, Memory Speed, Memory Interface Width, Memory Bandwith CUDA cores) I mainly work with 1080P digital SLR video and video effects, not a huge amount of 3d texts etc.
    - If i would choose the GPU as render engine, will the work be done purely by the GPU, of will it just 'assist' the CPU?
    - So far, i think the GTX 760 would be a good option, what is your opinion about this card for AE editing? Would this be a good choice or will a GTX 6xx or GTX 580 be a much better option? My budget for the whole system (without monitor etc.) is max. 1000 euro.
    - Would buying an SSD for storing the program files and the project files, be helpful? Or won't this increase the speed in editing by too much?
The system I have on my mind so far, recommendations and changes are very welcome..

The GPU acceleration for Premiere is completely different than the Ray tracer acceleration in AE. The GPU specifications along with the system ram and CPU cores/clock absolutely effect the performance of the playback in Premiere. Which means selecting the correct GPU is based on Premiere's MPE acceleration and the workflow/media used. The concept that comes into play here is processing latency. A older card with 1GB of vram and a single or dual core CPU may be able to playback a single 1080 stream by itself without any scaling. However as soon as any effects or frame alterations are added then the time it takes for the data to process at the cpu, buffer into ram, and then process through the GPU is to long to maintain the playback. The clock speed of CPU, Ram, and GPU/Vram all come into play as to how long it takes for this entire pipeline to process. The amount of threads and cores decide how much data can process at any point in time. The more layers and effects to process along with frame changes, the more data that has to be processed in any time segment required for playback. This is similar to how much water needs to go through a pipe. This can be increased by either increasing the size of the pipe or the Water pressure in the pipe by how fast the water is fed into the pipe. Both aspects have their limitations based on where the water is coming from and going to and what the conditions required are. A balance is normally required between both the size of the pipe and the amount of water/pressure sent into the pipe. However the greater the volume of water required at any time segment the greater both aspects must be increased. IE this translates over into clock speed equals water pressure and threads equal size. SSD's also have a significant aspect on processing latency. The latency of SSD drives is a fraction of mechanical drives. This means the amount of time it takes for SSD drives to handle all of the read or write requests made by the application is significantly lower. This translates into lowering the amount of time drive requests effect the overall performance of the realtime playback along with how fast files are written. Since codecs have different data rate requirements often times SSD drives are cheaper options to handle data rates that normally require significant raid setups that are expensive. SSD drives also handle far more requests simultaneously which translates to putting more operations on a single disc. This often translates into better performance with more complex timelines or compositions.
The comments regarding GPU specifications not really having any impact are relating to AE only. This is absolutely not the case for Premiere, AME, and Speedgrade or almost any other GPU acceleration application.

  • GPU question. Nvidia GTX590, should it work?

    Hi
A question about the Nvidia 590GTX. Is it supposed to work with the mercury engine? It's not on the supported list and when firing something like Premiere up (guess it's the same in AE) it says it can't find supported GPU and falls back to CPU only.
I thought that the CUDA layer took care of the supported cards and worked as a layer between the application and the card but maybe the mercury engine goes beyond CUDA and has some custom stuffs to it? If so, when can we expect 590GTX support? What happens in a multi GPU system like that (since that 's a dual GPU), if i toss in a Quadro 4000 too will it work with three GPU's?
    Cheers

    > when firing something like Premiere up (guess it's the same in AE)
The GPU features of After Effects and Premiere Pro are very separate.
Premiere Pro uses CUDA on certain cards, not including the GTX 590. See this page for details. If you want to request that the CUDA functionality be extended to the 590, then please submit a feature request.
After Effects uses OpenGL on any card with OpenGL 2.0, with specific features enabled depending on the capabilities of the card. See this page for details.
    There's more in these movies:
    http://www.video2brain.com/en/videos-5357.htm
    http://www.video2brain.com/en/videos-5359.htm
    > if i toss in a Quadro 4000 too will it work with three GPU's?
Premiere Pro will only use one GPU for CUDA computation. It doesn't, for example, use SLI to use multiple GPUs.

  • Lenovo g505s graphics questions

I just bought a G505s and its a model without the dual graphics, so I was wondering if there is a way for me to add a dedicated card in an expansion slot or does it have an Expansion slot?
Moderator comment: New thread created. Subject edited foe clarity.

    Hi Nekomayata,
    Welcome to Lenovo forums
As I understood that you are looking for additional graphics for your G505s.
As per the specification this model does not have dual graphics card slot.
I would also like to inform you that the graphic card cannot be added to expansion slot as there is no expansion slot present in this model.
Hope this helps! Do post us back for further queries.
    Best regards,

  • GT70 Dominator Pro GPU question...

Well, this might be a stupid question, and I apologize ahead of time, I am still trying to learn computers and hopefully one day build one.  Either way, I have a GT70 Dominator Pro 2PE, running with NVidia 880M 8G GPU, was curious if this thing was able to fit and support running SLI 880M's.  I kinda want to upgrade.  I know one 880M is amazing and I run every single game i've come across on Ultra, I just want more power really.
    CPU: Intel i-7 4910MQ
    16G Kingston Ram
    256G Crucial Raid-0 SSD with 1TB HD
ANY help would be appreciated on this matter, thank you all in advance!!  Oh and, if it is able to support SLI, would it be plug and play or is some serious config required??

Thank you both for the replies!  They have been helpful for sure.  The main reason I did not go Alienware(I have a desktop from them) is because they were 1200.00 more for a computer with not near the spec's that I have with the MSi.  This computer is an absolute beast, as i'm sure you can see in my first post with the spec's.
As far as SLI, maybe I will save it for the desktop that I'm going to build and just use this for on the go gaming.  Shame that MSI didn't make it so it could handle SLI.
Random question, as new GPU's come out, will I be able to upgrade my GPU or am I stuck with this??  Also, I currently have to SSD's in Raid 0 but I've been thinking about adding the third SSD option they have on their site, would something like that be plug and play since I'm already in raid 0??
Once again, thanks for the replies, they have been super helpful!!

  • MSI GT60 dedicated GPU question

Hello everyone! This is my first post
Basically i have a MSI GT60 2OC-003US, i have two questions regarding it.
First, I just bought a 27" monitor to plug into my notebook via HDMI. Now I have heard that the dedicated GPU (Mine is the GeForce GTX 770M) is not meant to be used at all times, however, when i plug in my HDMI to the monitor, the power light goes from white to orange indicating that the dedicated card is being used. Is there any way to make it so that it uses my integrated card instead of my dedicated? I am going to have my monitor connected at all times so i don't want it to be running off of my GTX.
And also, if i am gaming or have a monitor plugged in, and i stop gaming or unplug the monitor, the orange light should go back to being white since the dedicated gpu related programs are closed, yet it still stays orange? Wondering how i can fix that.
    Thank you lots!

GT60 2OC outputs video signal via dedicated GPU circuit. It's the hardware design. You can't change this architecture.
There're lots of processes using dedicated GPU out of your notices. You can go to NVIDIA Control Panel, find Desktop menu and check "Display GPU Activity Icon in Notification Area" to enable the activity window to quickly monitor which processes are using the dedicated GPU.

  • P100-115 linux / gpu question

Yesterday i installed suse 10.1 on my P100-115 (T2300,nvidia 7600 ). Install went smothly and everything works. But after a while i noticed that the fan on the left side never spins (i guess it is for graphics card). I tought that nvidia driver will help, so i installed. After i installed driver i could see the temp of the GPU and it was 85 C . I tried a game and it rised over 90C. I booted back to windows and the fan on the left started to blow right away with max speed so i guess it was a little hot inside :) . Now i would like to know if anyone had similar problems on linux (hope somebody else uses linux). And i also i noticed that the rear fan starts working when CPU temp reaches 65C. Is that not a little to high. Does anyone know if it is possible to check the temp of the GPU under windows. I tried few programs but they all only see CPU temp (ACPI )

I tried with the drivers toshiba provided, but there is no temperature reading. Do you know if it is safe to use drivers from nvidia website?

  • OS X Snow Leopard to Lion GPU question

I recently updated my OS from Snow Leopard to Lion and my PCs preformance has suffered in Video Games like Diablo III and Eve Online. I have a mid 2010 Intel i7 2.66 GHz 4GB RAM. Did the OS upgrade render my GPU incompatable? There isn't a driver download on the NVIDIA site for 330mGT that is compatable with OS X Lion. Should I "downgrade" to Lion. Or is there a way to utilize the GPU? Or am I just paranoid? Any thoughts or advice? Thank you!

I seem to have fixed the FPS and preformance problems by downloading the Gfxcard utility. Seems Lion likes to switch between HD and NVD330m. If there are any other ways to improve preformance please list them.

  • GPU Question

I upgraded to Tiger just this week, and I was thinking, I don't use my graphics card (Nvidia gforce 4 64 mb) for my sort of games, and from what utilities I've been using have been telling me, it's pretty much idle, so what if I were to outsource some of the jobs that the CPU's been doing to the GPU, thereby saving valuable cycles. Is there any way I can do this?

You can though expand the RAM on that Mac to 1.5 GB with a maximum of 999 MB available to applications in Mac OS 9.
CPU expansion cards exist though are more risky.
    Make sure to follow specs:

  • External GPU question!!!

I recently bought a mid-2012 macbook pro 13 inch (high end) without realizing that I would get into PC gaming.  The stock graphics card, Intel HD Graphics 4000, is not powerful enough, by far, to run the games I want it to, such as MW3 (and blops 2 when it comes out) and Battlefield 3.  Will this graphics card:   http://www.techforless.com/cgi-bin/tech4less/4650PE1GHPSB?mv_pc=nextag&tts=20120 814212718#over_spec connect to and work with my macbook pro, enabling it to run these games, via Thunderbolt?  Using windows 7, ported through parallels, of course.
    Thanks!!

You cannot change the graphics cards in the macbook pro, they are a special small format to fit in the macbook pro. Your only alternative is to sell you macbook pro and buy  a real high end one that has a better graphics card.

  • GPU on a budget for CS5

Hi, I have a GPU question here.
I’m working with both AVI and AVCHD files (Adobe PPro CS4) and I’m planning to migrate to CS5 soon. Can you please advice me what should be the minimum specs of the GPU for taking advantage of the Mercury feature of CS5? What brand?
This is my current card: MSI N250-GTS-2D1G OC 1GB GDDR3 PCI-E
    http://www.futureshop.ca/en-CA/product/msi-msi-n250-gts-2d1g-oc-1gb-gddr3-pci-e-video-card -n250-gts-2d1g-oc/10136155.aspx?path=43a8c5e5a1a9380698ff458429e6507cen02
Taking into consideration my workflow (2-3 video layers, color correction across the layers, mostly AVI files), will I notice a significant improvement if I switch for example to GeForce 285 or I should rather stick with my current GPU and invest the money into additional RAM?
    Thanks!

The 285GTX right now is the way to go unless you want to try this until the Fermi support is out or with a 480GTX

We will be testing the 480GTX with this and see where the known issues are with rendering.

  • Upgrading GPU on my HPE h8-1227 Desktop (Newbie)

I am looking for a new GPU that is compatible with my unit that I bought from Bestbuy, HP Pavilion HPE h8-1227 Desktop. But I need to know if the GPU will physically fit inside my CPU, and that GPU is compatible with my OS/Mobo.
See link for my exact CPU: http://h10025.www1.hp.com/ewfrf/wc/document?cc=ca&lc=en&docname=c03363686#N92
I did some reading on this site, see links below, and found some good info. Apparently, not all GPUs are compatible and stock HP CPUs can be picky and not boot after a new GPU installation – usually caused by BIOS problems. Ex: EVGA 750 ti is incompatible link: http://h30434.www3.hp.com/t5/Desktop-Hardware/new-graphic-card-EVGA-Geforce-gtx-750-ti-failing-on-HP...
Anyhow, a HP Expert Named Big_Dave found that the MSI N750 ti (link below) seems to work best for the bulk of stock HP CPUs as the MSI N750 ti GPU has a hybrid BIOS capability that can be switched to allow compatibility with legacy and UEFI BIOS PCs.

Will the MSI 750 ti physically fit in my unit? (it looks like there might be room, but it would be a tight fit.  ...but I can't tell because of wires & I am a newbie and have never swapped a GPU before)Card Dimensions (L x H)9.84" x 5.04"
Will the MSI 750 ti physically work in my P Pavilion HPE h8-1227 Desktop?

  • Will my 5th generation Mac with purchased upgrades support Diablo 3?

    Hello Mac family!!
I have a question that I have been getting multiple answers to.  My 5th generation Mac has the following specs:
OS X: 10.5.8 Leopard but I will be purchased Snow Leopard and Lion this weekend.
    Hard Drive: 50 GB
Processor: 2.1 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo
    Memory: 1GB 667 MHz DDR2 SDRAM (recently purchased a 4GB memory module)
Graphics/Displays:  Chipset Model: Intel GMA X3100
    Diablo 3 requirements are:
    Mac® OS X 10.6.8, 10.7.x or newer
Intel® Core 2 Duo CPU (or better)
    NVIDIA® GeForce® 8600M GT or ATI Radeon™ HD 2600 (or better)
    2 GB RAM
12 GB available Hard Drive space
DVD-ROM drive (for retail disc versions only)
    Broadband Internet connection
Video settings reaching a minimum resolution of 1024x768
I will have the OS X problem fixed when I upgrade to lion.  I will also have the RAM problem fixed when the 4GB module comes in.  I feel everything else is in order except the graphic card.  Will my GMA X3100 support the gameplay or DO I NEED NVIDIA OR ATI Radeon?

Sorry iamkevbone, your GPU (Graphics Processing Unit) will not be supported by Diablo 3.
You can reference this list for GPU questions pertaining to Diablo 3.
    http://www.brainlazy.com/article/video-games/diablo-3-graphics-card-video-card-e nough/
On a secondary note, if you managed to get it to run at the lowest settings, you would be at an extremely frustrating framerate.

  • Future buyer of W530 with questions on screen type and GPU.

    Hey guys,
I'm contemplating buying a W530 laptop to replace my aged Acer Aspire 5517. Anyway, I have some questions regarding screen type and graphics cards. One, my current Acer has a 16x9 HD screen that works perfectly fine for me, unless I go outside, so is it really worth the extra 200 bucks to upgrade to the 1920x1080 screen, or is that just overkill? same question regarding making a choice between the NVIDIA Quadro K1000M or K2000M, again, is it worth the money and what"s the biggest difference? Now I'm not a hardcore gamer, I mostly surf the web, do my work, and play a few games that are not really too demanding on the GPU.
    Thanks!

The 1920 x 1080 screen offered on the W530 is one of the best TN panels on the market so it's a worthwhile upgrade. Upgrading from a K1000M to a K2000M isn't a good idea unless you either spend a good amount of time playing games (or want higher settings playable) or need the extra power for CAD.
On my W530 , I upgraded the screen to the 1080P one and kept the K1000M GPU.

  • IMAC Premiere CS6 and GPU's question. (Updated)

The only new iMac's which might support GPU CUDA operation in Premiere CS6, are the 27 inch ones using the GTX 675MX or the GTX 680MX video chipset. Neither of these are on the cuda supported list but of course they could be added to the appropriate file to enable them to work. Is there anyone out there successfully using them in GPU acceleration mode? If so please let me know if they do work and which of the two you have. I can then argue my case with the boss.
Also, is anyone using them with Windows 7? Our Mac's are dual boot.
    Bye Andrew

Ok, I've upgraded to Mountain Lion now and that hasn't made Premiere any faster. However I've just been looking at the Scratch Disk configuration and they are all set to 'Same as Project'.
So here's my new question. I have 4 internal HDD's. At the moment the OS and Premiere Pro is on disk 1. Disk 2 is currently recieving my Premiere Pro project files and disk 3 and 4 are completely empty ready for footage or anything else. What is the best way to set up the Scratch Disks and Premiere Pro's Media cache(s)?
For reference the scratch disk options are currently:
    1) Captured Video - Same as Project
    2) Captured Audio - Same as Project
    3) Video Previews - Same as Project
    4) Audio Previews - Same as Project
Currently my 'Media Cache Files' are being sent to disk 1 and this is also where my 'Media Cache Database' is located.
    So what should I change?
