G505s - Shift key problem

i have a lenovo g505s and neither of my shift keys are working, out of the box. all other keys appear to be working just fine. i have contacted lenovo tech support and they restored the factory settings, but that did not fix the problem. i called geek squad and they messed with the filter keys and sticky keys. we were only able to type one letter [a fluke, it never happened again] right after turning on the filter keys. after that, no matter what we did, the shift key still does not work. any suggestions/

  • Left shift key problem help please

My left shift key is shifting my open page up out of the way and bringing me to my desktop page. My right key works fine. Does anyone know how to fix this problem?

Well, not sure about you new-fangled Snow Leopard users, but I'd check the Dashboard & Exposé preference pane in System Preferences and see if the Desktop shortcut is "Left Shift" instead of the normal F11.

  • WIreless keyboard shift key problem

I have an Apple wireless keyboard which was working fine for the past 10 months, until this morning. Now, when I press the shift key, it types an "I" and whatever other key I hit. Also, there are occasional random capital letters when I type without pressing the shift key. I've tried things like resetting the PRAM, going into keyboard preferences and resetting to the defaults, and unpairing/repairing the keyboard to my iMac. It is definitely the keyboard, as I plugged in the USB keyboard from my daughter's iMac, and that works fine. Also, I've tried to get support, but can't get past Apple telling me my serial number is invalid (Thanks so much to srodney for a VERY clear explanation of how to find that miniscule serial number!)
Thanks for any help you can give!

Keyboard: lower case letter or letters stop working.
Friends, I have solved this problem and used it several times successfully. In my case, it was the lower case “a”, the only letter that would not register and because my password contains an “a” I could not even restart and log in without a work-around. Tried numerous keyboards, cables, and all the rest. A safe boot fixed the problem so I knew it was a corruption glitch. Short version: I just did this two hours ago - July 18, 2009 - only the second or so time in a year, although it took me a lot of preference experimentation the first time to sniff it out.
In my case, went to my “user/library/preferences” folder and dragged onto the desktop the preference “loginwindow.plist” (not the one that starts "com.apple", at least in my case I didn’t need to get rid of that one). Restart and voila! Problem solved. Trash the old "loginwindow.plist" as a new one is created when you restart and you lose no data. To their credit, Apple was very helpful back when it happened the first time, and it was a real conundrum to them as well. I got lucky that it was not too obscure a problem so I didn't have to go through all the preferences and remove them one by one for hours. I found the guilty party fast. Now ya know! Maybe it'll work for you. And a general thanks to all the good people who write these notes and have saved my sanity many, many times. Finally a chance to pay it forward.

  • Safari 3.1 Update and Shift key problem in Gmail

The problem of the new 3.1 Safari update and its affect on the shift key in Gmail is all over this forum and the Gmail forum. Is anyone from Apple seeing this? This seems a very convoluted way to let Apple/Gmail know about it. It would be good if one could just email Apple with the problem - or even phoning !! instead of one having to join two discussion groups to find out what is going wrong after a frustrating day trying to send Gmails and only being able to send them in lower case. I joined the Mac world to get away from the Microsoft approach to support, but am a little disappointed that there are so many hoops to go through to find an answer to a problem that has sprng up as a result of a Safari update.

That matter is being discussed in this thread:

  • Keyboard Shift Key Problems - HP Envy 15

My laptop - it is an HP Envy 15 and the product number is G6U23UA#ABA.  recently started having issues with the shift key. I just got this computer in August of this year so it's very new and still under warranty. I have not spilled anything on it and I take very good care of it so I believe it may be a software issue. When pressing the shift key it will not capitalize letters - I have to use the caps lock key. I also am not able to produce the any of these symbols - ! @ # $ & ( ) - on the keyboard since that requires the use of the shift key.
Is there a fix for this problem? If not, is there a way for me to send in my laptop for repair since it is under warranty?
    Thank you.

  • Help! Left shift key not working!

all of a sudden today my left shift key has ceased to work. the right key works fine, increasing the chance that it's hardware. I'd like to remove the key cap and see if re-seating it might fix it. I've looked in many places on how to remove it, but no luck. Is there a web site that shows how it's done for a G4 Aluminum? Thanks in advance.

    Marco,
I've been having intermittent left shift key problems for several months. My laptop is now 3 days out of Warranty, Apple web site says so. Anyway, the only reliable fix I've found is to do a re-boot. I can also (sometimes) get reliable shifting if I slide my finger closer to the outer edge - meaning, no shift if pressed on one side of the key, sometimes shift on the other side.
I've also had success shifting in one application which seemed to "clear" the problem in the original application. Example: typing in Mail when left shift key stops working. Switch to MS Word, shift works fine. Switch back to Mail, shift works fine.
I have a feeling it's a combination of software and slowly failing hardware. I feel bad to have waited until after the warranty period, and now the problem is getting worse. My wife was just in for brain surgery, so you can't really blame me! She's doing fine.
So, my suggestion is to try rebooting to see if that clears a memory buffer problem. Kinda annoying, maybe a future software update will fix the software problem?

  • Special boots with faulty shift key

My shift key has been faulty for a while after a minor accident which did not affect other parts of the computer (It was checked by a Mac technicial, this happended a long time ago), but since then I've had to boot my computer by holding down the escape key every time to prevent a safe boot, no problem, but cue to now, the past two days I've been having strange freezes on boot for 10-15 minutes mouse moves but cannot click, keyboard frozen. I would like to try: a. resetting the PRAM and b. running a hardware diagnostic from the CD, but I can manage to do neither presumably due to my faulty shift key problems.
Does anyone know how my shift key would interact with these other special startups? What key combinations should I try?
    And
Is there a non-hold key on bootup way to do these tasks?
    Thanks

    ARReflections wrote:
Trust me if I thought it was the caplock key being stuck then I would not be posting this question in the first place.
The computer boots into safe mode and from what I understand, this happens when the shift key is pressed on boot up.
Thanks ARReflections for the clarification on your above statement. I miss read what you where trying to convey.
Agreed of coarse with eww assessment.
Don't rule out the problem shift key is the one you do not use regularly. Independent of cleaning under the key (DIY compressed air, removing the key cap for cleaning, etc) well could be narrowed down to the microswitch.
Depending on how far past warranty there is always the possibility it will still be honored as warranty repair, or fixed at the Genius Bar.
Apple Retail Store or an Apple Authorized Service Provider (AASP) for evaluation, or call your nearest Apple Contact Center. Genius Bar at the Apple Retail Store, make a reservation

  • SHIFT key does not work - one the first letter gets capitalized

When typing a word in ALL CAPS by pressing the SHIFT key, only the first character appears in CAPS. All subsequent characters appear in lower case even though the SHIFT key is continually pressed.
The workaround is to backspace over the lower case character(s) one at a time as they are typed and type them again in CAPS, or use the CAPS LOCK key.
This problem surfaced after a string of updates (Combo 10.5.2 update; Graphics update; keyboard firmware update) and I cannot be certain which one (if any) is responsible for the snafu.
As someone who types a lot, I urgently need to have this fixed. Thanks.
    Andreas

I solved the SHIFT key problem. As it turns out, it was not the result of any update or buggy piece of software code, but a conscious (albeit erroneous) decision on my part.
A few days ago, I installed a new version of TypeIt4Me and in perusing the various settings, I selected the “No DOuble CAps” option. I misinterpreted what this option would do. It modifies the behavior of the SHIFT key which I then thought was a bug in my system.
TypeIt4Me, btw, by Riccardo Ettore, is a wonderful application. I have used it for more than a decade, and I can honestly say it is the most valuable shareware utility I have ever installed on my macs. I strongly and unconditionally recommend it to all mac users.

  • Annoying problem with shift key in limit dialog Brio 6.6.4

<p>My company uses Brio Insight & Designer v6.6.4.  We (meaning almost all users) are encountering an annoying problem whenadding a limit to a query using the limit dialog.  When try toenter a limit value using the shift key, as in Shift T to enter acapital T, the limit value field ends up with a value like"TTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTT".  Thisis very annoying and widespread problem with us.  It seemed tostart when we upgraded to Win XP SP2.  Is there a solution forother than to "upgrade to the latest version"?</p>

Unfortunately not. The only way we avoided this issue was to upgrade or write the text into a text editor and cut and paste the text into the section name box.
