G570 HDD freezing/dropping randomly

Hello.
I'm sorry for posting my troubles again but there is no other place to ask.
So I switched to Windows 8 a couple of weeks ago and I'm experiencing problems one after another, even though there's one that is the most important.
Basically my PC freezes randomly and becomes unresponsive (the mouse moves though). The HDD light stays on and this all lasts for around 20 seconds sometimes longer. This doesn't happen only when I'm browsing around, but also when watching movies, running games or even when booting. I'm sure the problem is related to the HDD as I notice the light stuck on for these seconds very often.
So I'm using Windows 8 Pro 64-bit (even though I tried also Windows 8 Core and the Core from another language disk and the problem still persits). I tried everything I could find on the internet and nothing. This includes: running Windows Update, performing a clean/safe boot, installing the chipset driver (actually updated almost all the drivers), but I didn't change the HDD as I use mine for like 1,5 years.
Help me please! Is my HDD dying?

hi Barrett_killz,
I would say the best way to isolate this is to run a Diagnostic on your HDD,
If you still have Windows running and still can install a software an In-Windows Diagnostic like HD Tune  would be okay.
But if the system failed to run it or still system keeps on freezing, you can run an Non-Windows bootable diagnostic
You can use neokenchi's suggestion: This tool can also run RAM Tests
Spoiler (Highlight to read)
1. Downloading the UBCD ISO
2. Burn the ISO using imgburn
3. Insert the CD that you just created into the defective computer and reboot
4. Upon reboot, continuously press F12 and boot from the ODD/CD-DVD
5. On the diagnostic options, navigate to HDD > Diagnosis > & choose the diagnostic software depending on the brand of your HDD (i.e. choose Seagate for DOS if you have a Seagate HDD, Data Lifeguard if you have a Western Digital HDD, etc..)
To burn the diagnostic softwre on a flashdrive, follow this guide
If you find any errors, Your HDD might need to be replaced.

    Hi buddy,
    > The game isn't graphic intensive and had worked for about a month with no problems, only recently has it begun to freeze
This could mean that the notebook is overheating now
The reason of overheating is dust that is blocking the fan so the notebook gets hotter
I would recommend cleaning it using compressed air spray to blow out the dust from cooling ventilators. You can do this without disassembling the computer so its very easy and takes 5 minutes only.
Just remove the battery and disconnect AC/DC adapter before you do this.
For example I clean my notebook every 4 months because a lot of dust is coming out so its worthwhile.

  • MacBook Pro - Stall, Freezes at Random Times & Durations

Hello all, hope you can help me with a perplexing problem.
Starting this past Monday, my MacBook Pro (specs below) started stalling or freezing at random times. The stalls will sometimes last for 5 seconds and then I can use it again, other times it'll last for 30 seconds to several minutes. On occasion it'll freeze up so hard that I have to do a hard shut down. When it stalls, I can move my mouse and even select other applications which sometimes work. More often then not, it stalls all the programs and I just have to wait.
It does not seem to matter what applications are running or how many. Generally I run a web browser (Firefox, Chrome, or Safari - I've been alternating to see if one is better) with one or two tabs open. I've worked flawlessly for several hours with Browser, Word, and Terminal open, then it freezes up when I try to open something like System Preferences (or Spotlight or whatnot). So there is no real pattern when it comes to applications.
The temperature hovers around 55 - 65. RAM usage rarely tops half and CPU fluctuates but nothing outside of what you'd consider normal (i.e. it never pegs at 100% when stalled or frozen).
    I've tried the following:
    * Ran Rember (1 pass, then another 25 passes over night) - No Errors
    * Ran Verify Permissions - No Errors
    * Ran Verify Disk - No Errors
    * Reformatted and Reinstalled the OS from scratch (problem continues)
    * Repeated the Rember, Verify Disk Permissions, and Verify Disk - No Errors
    * Reset PRAM and NVRAM
    * Reset the SMC
    * Ran Applejack and all the tests associated with it.
In the Console system.log, there was an instance of unknown-dev: flushing fs disk buffer returned 0x5. After doing some Googling, I ended up disabling Journaling to see if that would make a difference. I was able to run for about 25 minutes before it froze up again.
Any other thoughts or theories that I could try out? Much appreciated.
    Specs
    MacBook Pro
    OS X 10.5.8
2.4 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo
    4GB RAM
    Fujitsu MHY2200BH 186GB Hard Drive
    GeForce 8600 GT w/256MB

Reformatted and Reinstalled the OS from scratch (problem continues)
If you done that, then I believe you have a hard drive issue. Did you zero-out the drive (select "Zero out data" under the "Security Options" button in your Disk Utility) before you reinstalled a new system? If not, you might try that to map out any bad sectors first, before replacing the drive.

  • Firefox 18.0.1 often freezes, at random times, since about 31 Jan 2013

    2 Feb 2013
Concerns: Firefox 18.0.1 often freezes, at random times, since about 31 Jan 2013
I am using Mozilla Firefox 18.0.1, Windows Vista, PC, Desktop.
My Mozilla Firefox freezes since about 31 Jan 2013 at random times quite often, when I do see TV or videos, also with YouTube videos. It freezes especially when I do start TV or a Video, sometimes also it freezes when the video is running for some time. I do use Firefox mostly only for TV and videos, so else I do not see.
Some days earlier (26 January 2013), I had installed the upgrade of the new Norton Internet Security 2013. The two Norton add-ons on for Firefox, I have both deactivated.
I can get out of the freezing, when I do click to end the Internet connection. After I have waited for about 5 seconds, the Mozilla Firefox browser can be moved again with the cursor. After I click to close the Firefox, and wait for about 5 seconds, the freezing also does end.
I did do two Windows restores, one to 1 week ago and the next to 2 weeks ago. After the restore, when I started Mozilla Firefox, it was at first Firefox 17. But to my very bad luck, Firefox started immediately to update to Firefox 18.0.1 I had seen this updating on Help – About Firefox. There were good times, when people could choose themselves which version of Firefox they wanted.
After the restore, I had also downloaded the latest Adobe Flashplayer version (about version 11.5), but the freezes have remained the same.
Is there a possility to prevent the automatic update of Firefox? So that I could choose which version of Firefox, I do want. When there is a serious bug in Firefox, I could nevertheless use Firefox instead of changing to the Internet Explorer. I know I myself am responsible to prevent hackers from entering my computer. I have read that 80% of users in Germany do not have any Internet Security against hackers at all.
My Internet Explorer until now does not freeze.

This is not a solution. It is a gun in the mouth. Give us specific solutions, not "throw everything away" palliatives that involve no thought, investigation or effort of any kind on Mozilla's part. 95% of the utility of FF is not FF itself, but addons. After many years of developing that context, throwing it all away to get back a rudimentary 5% is as unacceptable as it is stupid.

  • External HDD keeps dropping out (without ejecting itself) ~ due to 1 bad partition

    Hi,
As stated above, my faithful WD 1TB MyPassport HDD keeps dropping out by itself, ie. icon disappears from my desktop and I get left with a 'eject before disconnect...' message.
At first it would appear to be a cable/USB/corrupt disk issue, BUT..........this is only happening since I tried to delete a partition using DiskUtility, (I have 2 partitions, I'll refer to the one I was trying to delete 'Partition1'), halfway through this  my Mac froze. I'm using a macbookpro[Alu][intel][OSX10.8.4] and an iMac[10.8.4 again].
    Symptoms....
    1. On reset I found that Partition1 showed up in gray in DiskUtility, but not on the desktop.
    2. Partition2 shows up fine, on desktop and in DiskUtility.
    3. After a minute or so both partitions dissappear and I get my familiar 'you should have ejected' message.
All I want to do now is repair the permissions, verify the disk or delete Partition1...but because the drive keeps disappearing I'm a bit stuck. If I can just get the data from Partition2 before it all drops out then I can cope with binning the rest of the drive.
    I've tried....
    1. different equipment [cables, different macs (macbook and iMac), hubs and USB ports]
    2. using DiskArbitrator to allow the drive to stay connected
    3. using KeepDriveSpinning for the same reason
    4. smashing my head against a brick wall
    Please help....
    Thanks in advance,
    Grant
    Str0ke5

It certainly may be. I do not trust Western digital external drives. I've have several of them fail and it was not the physical drive that failed it was the enclosure electronics. Once I removed the physical drive from the WD enclosure and connect it with a IDE/SATA to USB adapter the actual drives were fine and I'm still using all of them.
It also might be your Mac as these WD Passport drives are USB powered and Mac's are notorious for not putting out enough power on the USB ports to complete power up some of these type drives. There are numerous thread on how a warning will come up thjat the USB port has been disabled because something it drawing to much power from it. And that is with nothing at all connected to any of the USB ports.
Only way to test it to take the drive out of the WD enclosure and use one of those IDE/SATA to USB adapters and see if the same thing happens.

  • Forms Application(custom built) freezes at random.  Urgent!!

    Hi
We have a forms application built in 6i and deployed on 9i Rel1 application server.
    Database is Oracle 9i Rel2.
The forms application freezes at random with no errors.
    The jinitiator version is 1.1.8.19.
The forms has scroll bars and most of them are tabbed canvas on plain canvas.
Any suggestion will be greately appriciated. Please help.
    Thanks you.

It is very difficult to say why you are experiencing a performance issue. I do recall that one of the JInitiator versions did have a problem which caused some minor performance issues. If you are not using version 1.3.1.30 (the last version created) I would recommend using it. Also, here are some things to consider,
    1. If the client machines are old and outdated, you likely will experience performance problems as the products you run on it are replaced with newer ones. For example, if you were previously running JInit 1.1.8 on an under powered WinXP, NT or older machine and are now running Jinit 1.3.1.x, I would expect poor performance.
    2. The form will be slow to start the first time you run it with the new JRE (JInit). This is because the jar file(s) as well as other files must be downloaded and cached. After this occurs, future attempts should startup somewhat quicker.
    3. If the first form/canvas that is presented to the end-user in your application contains a large number of gui objects (text boxes, buttons, etc), this will delay startup. Creating a splash or welcome screen which contains a very limited number of objects can help to increase startup performance or at least the perception.
    4. On the server (mid tier), do not access application files across network shares. For example if "Forms" is running on a machine called "myMachine" all of the Forms modules (fmx, mmx, plx) files should be on the same machine, "myMachine". Accessing these files remotely will degrade performance.
    5. In all cases, having sufficient RAM on the client and server are an important factor to ensuring the best possible performance. Of course a fast CPU is always helpful too, but generally most machine are short of memory and not CPU.

  • My macbook freezes at random times?

Hey everyone, i just got this macbook a few weeks ago second hand. i've replaced the top case, and reformatted and installed osx 10.5.8 on the computer. and upgraded the ram to 2 gb. Every since day one i've had problems with the computer freezing at random times. Either trying to do multiple things at once will cause the spinning wheel, and won't allow me to do anything. Sometimes it's just an application that will freeze or sometimes the whole computer freezes as the time gets stuck at the time it froze. The computer will also freeze when i'm in the middle of moving larger files from a firewire external drive onto the computer. Any ideas or suggestions? I've ran permissions repair and repaired the drive and neither help at all. It also took me 3 attempts to install the o.s. as it would freeze, i thought that was due to the 512mb of ram it had installed. so i installed the 2gb once i got the o.s. finally installed.

Heres a log from the most recent freeze.

  • My daughter's Mac book freezes at random times. Apple's been unable to fix it. Her college grades are suffering. How can I convince Apple to just replace it?

My daughter's Mac book freezes at random times. Apple's been unable to fix it. On most visits to the Apple store, it works fine. On other visits, it acts up, and they replace something like the RAM or the hard drive.  She lost a semester for university course notes, and currently can't use it at all, because Apple sent it out for 'diagnostics'.  Her college grades are suffering. How can I convince Apple to just replace it?

Apple policy in the past has been to try and repair three times.  If is not successful, then replace.  So keep accuarate records on when and what was repaired so you can make your argument that it needs to be replaced.

  • Dual 2 GHz PowerPC G5 beachballing and then freezing at random intervals

My computer at work has been beachballing and then freezing at random intervals for the past week or so.
What happens is that all processes stop. The cursor is still responsive for a while, and then the application I'm in, regardless of what it is, “beachballs.”
Occasionally I'm able to wait it out and the computer becomes usable again and other times it just freezes. Then I can't force quit so I have to do a hard power cycle and then start up again. This happens every day, at least 4 times a day.
I've been keeping the system.log open to look for any tell-tale issues and noticed that during every crash I get the following information:
    3 kernel[0] disk)s3: data underrun
    3 kernel[0]
and it repeats until the computer becomes responsive again or I decide to do a hard power cycle.
In addition, I checked the System Profiler diagnostics area and found this:
     Last Run:    11/8/10 1:05 PM
      Result:    Failed
      Failure type:    Memory
      Memory slots:    DIMM6/J43, DIMM7/J44
So…I switched out the offending bars and switched them for 1 GB bars and this problem was solved.
The diagnostics result for the Power On Self-Test:
    Last Run: 11/10/10 6:21 PM
    Result: Passed
However…I'm still experiencing beachballing and freezing problems with the same severity and frequency.
    Help!

So, to clarify: do you suggest I use Disk Utility first to see if any problems are uncovered? Or should I use TechTool Deluxe instead and test the RAM with Memtest?
My two cents would be use Disk Utility first. If you don't have the install disk handy, you can do the same thing with single-user mode. See this link for details: http://support.apple.com/kb/TS1417
You have to run it from single user mode (start with command-S keys held down until you get a Unix terminal screen.
You can also run memtest from single-user mode, though I do not remember the command syntax offhand. Looking at an AppleJack log, though, I see the following command line entry that was used to run memtest on a three-pass check
    */usr/local/sbin/memtest all 3 -L*
Running memtest from single-user mode tests more of the RAM because little is occupied by the BSD kernel.
A snip of the terminal output running memtest:
    Test sequence 1 of 3:
    Stuck Address : ok
    Random Value : ok
    Compare XOR : ok
    Compare SUB : ok
    Compare MUL : ok
    Compare DIV : ok
    Compare OR : ok
    Compare AND : ok
    Sequential Increment: ok
    Solid Bits : ok
    Block Sequential : ok
    Checkerboard : ok
    Bit Spread : ok
    Bit Flip : ok
    Walking Ones : ok
    Walking Zeroes : ok
Somewhat thorough, though no test is completely bulletproof.

  • Cisco 7960 IP Phone Dropping Random Digits

We have several 7960's that drop random digits while dialing. You hear th tone but the digits doesn't register on the phone. You end up having to start dialing over again.

Cisco found bug in software. Ver7 is suppose to take care of it.

Backup and restore your software via iTunes. If the problem continues, restore as a NEW device. If this solves it, that means there is some corruption in your backup file, or maybe it's one of your apps causing the trouble. If the problem is still there, you should take it to the Genius Bar at an Apple Store for evaluation.

  • GTX 760 Leaking fluid(oil?) and freezing up randomly, bearing noise from fan

I just bought an MSI GTX 760 OC TwinFrozr couple of months ago and am facing serious issues.
    Specs on my machine
    >i5 3570K
    >8 gb 1600 Corsair ram
    >Asrock Z77 Ultimate 6 motherboard
    >Thermaltake 650W Smart 650
    >the GPU in question
    >SSD and 2 HDD's
My screen will freeze randomly and the machine will become unresponsive and sound will buzz and slowly advance for ~1-2 minutes until my machine recovers and tells me that a driver has crashed and recovered. Sometimes the machine requires a hard reset. The driver crashing is most likely due to the system slowing down and desyncing. I have reinstalled windows and all drivers, reseated everything, checked every cable, ran without the GPU and stress-tested and I only get this issue with the 760, but not my old 550TI, which I am now forced to use due to the 760's issues. Also ran + installed windows from/on 2 different HDD's.
Before I take this product to RMA at my local shop, I want to publish this here to serve both as proof and for someone to maybe give me some advice regarding this issue, maybe a confirmation that this issue is in fact not with my PSU, CPU or motherboard. I have run stress-tests on all components and only with the 760 connected my machine will freeze. No issues with intelburn, iGPU burners, kombustor on iGPU or memtests, no issues with HDD's. Most of the time with the 760 the machine will freeze in Source-engine based games, youtube videos and VLC running, but also just randomly, without reaching any high stress or load. Haven't managed to get a freeze with ONLY kombustor, except a few times.
Here are some photos of the fans, the surrounding area has, what seems like hydraulic fluid that would come from a hydraulic bearings used in some fans: -----> imgur.com/a/5m7jY <-----. I noticed this because my case window started to get some splatter that was horizontal and adjacent to the GPU, there is also some of the oil on my motherboard, the side window has now been cleaned. The oil could not have come from an external source, since the machine is always upright and the fans are always facing down + I take EXTREME caution and care of my machine on a tri-monthly basis and my machine is a holy shrine to me.
If anyone could confirm that the 760 TF has hydraulic/fluid-bearings on the fans, I would be grateful. I just want to be 100% sure before I apply for an RMA, because if the store claims that the issue is my fault, I will have to pay €40 for collateral + other costs and I simply can't afford that right now.
    Thank you very much.

I have the same card with the same problem. Slight rattle around 70-85%, goes away at full speed but there's an oil line running parallel to my GPU on my motherboard which I'm not happy about. Started the RMA process today, but I'm a little annoyed by the fact that MSI wants ME to pay shipping to them . For the cost of a good courier, I may as well replace the fans... I wish someone would make a water-block for this card.
Have you tried contacting the consumer protection agency in your location? Where did you get your GPU? The RMA should be handled by the reseller in some cases and when a product is malfunctioning, at least in my country, the product needs to be compensated without additional cost to the customer if it is within the warranty period.
I took my GPU in for an RMA as soon as the first response to this thread was made and now pending for a few weeks before I get a new one.
The GPU did indeed have a hydro bearing and they told me that this wasn't an unseen situation and that the product will be sent back asap. Actually, as soon as they saw it, they said that it's clearly a defected product.
Thanks to badboy2k for the quick reply and thanks Flatlanded for replying, hope you can get the card fixed.
I had a very bad experience with MSI products, just last year my cousins motherboard fried just outside the warranty period and now my 270€ GPU has both fans malfunctioning and the card itself freezing my machine. Let's hope the refurbed card wont have these issues and lives on, it's a really good card performance-vise, but unfortunately I'm not impressed by the build quality right now.

  • Firefox tends to freeze at random and to fix I must use ctrl+alt+del. From there I can restore my previous session when I reopen firefox. This has never been an issue before Firefox 6

Firefox is giving me issues to where it crashes at supposedly random times. It has frozen up when merely left on but more than often tends to freeze when opening a new page. I have 4GB RAM, 3.00GHz Duel Core processor, 8800 GTX Nvidia GPU. This issue has never been so prominent until the Firefox 6 update.

    Go to''' Tools'''
    then '''Options'''
    In privacy choose '''Remember History'''
    Then go to
    ''General Tab''
At the start up drop down menu when firefox starts select
'''show my windows and tabs from last time'''
    That should fix things

  • MBP freezes (apparently) randomly.

I have a MacBook Pro 15" that I purchased in 2006. It has started freezing up at (seemingly) random times, leaving me with the only option of shutting it down by holding down the power button. Usually after doing this and trying to restart, it will freeze in a similar manner again at the log in screen.
For a while I was able to just shut it down for a few hours and it would function for another hour or two, which lead me to believe the machine was overheating. But now I could have it turned off for over 24 hours and turn it back on and it will freeze at the log in screen. When the problem started I could use it for maybe an hour then it would freeze, I'd shut it down for another 1-2 hours and be able to get another hour of use before another freeze. Now I basically can't even turn it on.
The battery has been completely dead for a while, which likely is contributing to the problem. I took the battery out and attempted a restart but had the same problem. I also noticed that the battery had bulged, which is a new addition to the problem (it probably started to grow in the last week or two). I am getting a new battery and hope this will help, but I'm pretty sure I have more than just a battery problem.
I would love any suggestions on what might be done to get it running again. I don't know that I've included enough detail so please ask me questions if you think you might be able to help. Also, I know the computer is very old, but please do not suggest that I just buy a new one. If I could afford an new Mac, I would have already bought one! I do not intend to attempt any hardware fixes on my own, but if you folks can even give me an idea of what is going on for me to tell the repair people, that would be awesome. Thanks!

First, remove any bulging battery as it is a hazard.  Properly dispose of it.  As tjk has suggested, next run the hardware diagnostics to be sure there is no hardware failure.
How to run hardware diagnostics for an Intel Mac
Boot from your original OS X Installer Disc One that came with your computer.  After the chime press and hold down the "D" key until the diagnostic screen appears.  Run the extended tests for a minimum of two or three hours.  If any error messages appear note them down as you will need to report them to the service tech when you take the computer in for repair.
    Some "common" error indicators:
    SNS - sensor error
    MEM - memory error
HDD - hard disk drive error
    MOT - fan error
    Then I suggest the following:
How to Perform an Archive and Install
An Archive and Install will NOT erase your hard drive, but you must have sufficient free space for a second OS X installation which could be from 3-9 GBs depending upon the version of OS X and selected installation options. The free space requirement is over and above normal free space requirements which should be at least 6-10 GBs. Read all the linked references carefully before proceeding.
    1. Be sure to use Disk Utility first to repair the disk before performing the Archive and Install.
Repairing the Hard Drive and Permissions
Boot from your OS X Installer disc. After the installer loads select your language and click on the Continue button. When the menu bar appears select Disk Utility from the Installer menu (Utilities menu for Tiger, Leopard or Snow Leopard.) After DU loads select your hard drive entry (mfgr.'s ID and drive size) from the the left side list. In the DU status area you will see an entry for the S.M.A.R.T. status of the hard drive. If it does not say "Verified" then the hard drive is failing or failed. (SMART status is not reported on external Firewire or USB drives.) If the drive is "Verified" then select your OS X volume from the list on the left (sub-entry below the drive entry,) click on the First Aid tab, then click on the Repair Disk button. If DU reports any errors that have been fixed, then re-run Repair Disk until no errors are reported. If no errors are reported click on the Repair Permissions button. Wait until the operation completes, then quit DU and return to the installer. Now restart normally.
If DU reports errors it cannot fix, then you will need Disk Warrior and/or Tech Tool Pro to repair the drive. If you don't have either of them or if neither of them can fix the drive, then you will need to reformat the drive and reinstall OS X.
    2. Do not proceed with an Archive and Install if DU reports errors it cannot fix. In that case use Disk Warrior and/or TechTool Pro to repair the hard drive. If neither can repair the drive, then you will have to erase the drive and reinstall from scratch.
    3. Boot from your OS X Installer disc. After the installer loads select your language and click on the Continue button. When you reach the screen to select a destination drive click once on the destination drive then click on the Option button. Select the Archive and Install option. You have an option to preserve users and network preferences. Only select this option if you are sure you have no corrupted files in your user accounts. Otherwise leave this option unchecked. Click on the OK button and continue with the OS X Installation.
    4. Upon completion of the Archive and Install you will have a Previous System Folder in the root directory. You should retain the PSF until you are sure you do not need to manually transfer any items from the PSF to your newly installed system.
    5. After moving any items you want to keep from the PSF you should delete it. You can back it up if you prefer, but you must delete it from the hard drive.
    6. You can now download a Combo Updater directly from Apple's download site to update your new system to the desired version as well as install any security or other updates. You can also do this using Software Update.
