G580 and Smart Fan Control?

Hello all,
I just purchased a Lenovo G580 laptop. There is a sticker near the keyboard about 'Smart Fan, Noise Control'. But so far I have not been able to find out how to use that feature. AFAIK, some earlier Lenovo models did have a separate touch button for this feature. Is the user supposed to be able to control it at all in G580? There isn't anything about this in the user manual.
Lenovo Energy Management software gives me some kind of control over the efficiency of the hardware. But to me it just seems to replicate the selections I make with Windows' own power management options. Fortunately the machine is relatively quiet in itself. But particularly when listening to music it would be nice to make the fan as quiet as possible - to my knowledge playing back FLAC files is not a very demanding task.
Thanks in advance for any advice.

Dear lenovo support,
As we have said, and as you MUST already know (since you made them), the user guide, the sticker on the demo laptop at retail stores, and the same sticker you see on the laptop you purchase ALL SAY IT HAS "SMART FAN, NOISE CONTROL". However when reading the user manual, or looking at the laptop itself it is abundantly clear that THERE IS NO NOISE CONTROL BUTTON.
Clearly the reply saying the original post has been solved was in error. Normally I would be ok with that if you had bothered to fix it or apologize for some kind of "clerical error" by now. Your customer care is reminiscient of microsoft. This is not anything you should be proud of. I don't think, but KNOW that you need to either admit the G580 doesn't have the features in question or explain how we can use/access them.
This is a simple issue. This has been addressed with incorrect information. This has since been determined to be the "solution". If you cannot resolve something this SIMPLE, what should I expect if I have a serious problem? Well, I don't want to have to find out.
If this thread doesn't get either an ACTUAL informative response, or a simple apology I will return my laptop. I will use my money to purchase another, non-lenovo laptop. I will never purchase another lenovo product. I will advise everyone I can, whis is substantial as I work 6 days a week doing home and buisness tech support, not to purchase lenovo products. With this in mind, I eagerly await your quick response. I do not have long until my 30 day window expires to return it. I have been waiting for a response to this since I bought it.

  • MSI Z97-G45 Smart fan control Bios v2.0 vs Bios v2.3

    Hello
I have an MSI Z97-G45 Gaming motherboard in my new setup with 4ghz i7 4790k and 16gb of ram and so on that i bought a few weeks ago. At first the motherboard had v2.0 Bios and everything worked just fine but as i like maximum compatability and other fixes i upgraded the bios to the latest one v2.3.
In my setup i use the bios smart fan control for both system and CPU fan, i set it at a curve where the fans instantly will rise the fan speed when doing tests like Prime95 and Aida64. When doing the tests the fan rised from idle 800rpm to neded fanspeed for the correct cooling for my CPU and reached maximum 1500rpm in a matter of seconds to keep the CPU cool. This worked perfectly with Bios v2.0 but after i upgraded the bios to v2.3 the smart fan control changed fanspeed extremely slowly, it took almost 50sec for the fan to speed up from 800rpm to 1500rpm when stressing the CPU at 100%. When i stoped the stress test the fans slowed down to idle 800rpm very fast with bios v2.0 but with bios 2.3 i took a looong time to slow down to idle speed again from 1500rpm.
Because of the slow changing fanspeed in bios v2.3 i downgraded to v2.0 again and then my fans works just as i want them to do.
What is the reason for this problem/change in bios v2.3 and will this be fixed in future versions? Is this a known problem with newest bios?
When people will buy this MB and it has v2.3 from factory the smart fan control will not work properly and buyers will not know how good it can acctually be. I think the Smart fan control in v2.0 is super great

  • 1.A bios and smart fan

i recently updated to the newest bios (1.A) and now it seems my smart fan tolerance entry in the bios setup screen doesn't save.
i set it to 1 (the default is 5) ... but as soon as i save the changes and the machine reboots, it reverts back to 5.
other changes that i make here remain.. only this one always reverts back.
    anyone else having this problem??
i can't get my noisy fan to slow down now and be more quiet!!
Edit: forgot to say that i have an MSI K8N Neo2 Platinum

yeah... i could use speedfan, but it used to work with the bios controls  -- so i expect it to work now.
also, it's a pretty strange problem, why doesn't it save the tolerance in the bios settings, but is ok with everything else?
    anyone else have this problem?

  • H61MU-E35-B3 and smart fan....minimum fan speed

Hi, I installed a core i3 2100 to this board. My cooler is a Scythe Grand Kama wich cames with it's own fan. I set smart fan to target:50° and minimum speed of "0". Even tough the temps idel way below 50° the fans rpm is always aroun 620. Why does it spin so high, since i set it to 0????
    thanks

ok, it's the fan....It wont run below 622rpm.

  • 990xa-gd55 cpu smart fan control doesn't work?

Hello, i purchased this MB few days ago, and I have a problem stated above. I set the target temperature at 40 C, and cpu fan min. speed at 75%, but my fan (Cooler Master Excallibur 2000rpm which has 4 pins) slows at 650 rpm, and no matter what I do (play a game, run linx or prime 95) it doesn't speed up. I flashed BIOS to the newest version. Anybody else having this problem, or possibly a solution?
P.S. Sorry for my bad English.

I don't like CoolerMaster stuff, so I bet it is loud as ... by design.
It is important to have the motherboard out of the case when seating the processor. Otherwise you can't be sure you did a good job.
Page 3-16 in the manual I find here (all old King's English version) http://se.msi.com/service/download/manual-17394.html
    "Important
To ensure that Cool’n’Quiet function is activated and will be working properly, it is
    required to double confirm that:
Run BIOS Setup, and select Cell Menu. Under Cell Menu, find AMD Cool’n’Quiet,
and set this item to “Enabled”.
Enter Windows, and select [Start]->[Settings]->[Control Panel]->[Power Options].
Enter Power Options Properties tag, and select Minimal Power Management under
    Power schemes."
Some kind of changes, like overclock, may take away the Cool'nQuiet feature.
Not enabled it wont work.    If it was a BIOS bug I don't think SpeedFan would be more successful, but I am not 100% sure.

  • New iMac 27 i7 and SMC Fan Control

    Hi Folks,
As a new iMac owner can anyone tell me if SMC Fan Control should work ok, on my new iMac 27 i7?
Also what is the normal operating temps for this iMac?
    Many thanks,
    Jim

The first time that you start smcFanControl (smcFC) on a Mac it will read the fans and their base rpms. An iMac usually has 3 fans. I have not heard that the huge screen real estate 27" iMac has more or less. I have also not seen anyone claiming that smcFC "burned out" their fans.
I use smcFC on both my iMac Core Duo (3 fans) and my Mac mini (1 fan). I find it invaluable here where I cannot afford air conditioning. Macs tend to heat up when viewing any sort of video. I have created settings with smcFC that I use when viewing videos that keep the temps inside my Macs close to the operating temps of when I am checking email and surfing the web.
I believe that the above listed temps are the ambient environmental temps advised for using a Mac, not Mac's internal operating temps. 34°C is actually on the low side. My Mac mini runs around 48 usually. If a Mac overheats it will shut itself off. If you find that your Mac is shutting itself off often I would especially look into why. Is it overheating during a particular activity? Does smcFC perhaps help your Mac run cooler during that activity?
Keep your Mac in a well ventilated place with good air circulation, not cramped into a little cubbyhole of sorts. Every year or two have a Mac tech clean it out. They do get dirty inside, even in your clean home or office. That layer of dirt can add a lot to heating up your Mac.

  • Battery and smc fan control

will running that software do anything that would kill your battery faster than if you didn't?
    thanks!

The design idles the fans normally at 2000 RPM which is sufficient. Fan software does nothing more than increase the idle speed of the fans. That simply means the fans won't increase in speed until the temperature sensors report a higher temperature than would have normally caused the fans to ramp up. For all intents and purposes all this does is keep the computer cooler during idle. Unless you keep your room temperature very high or do not allow proper air circulation, there's little need to use fan control software.
I have both a first and second generation MBP and neither computer requires any fan control software and they both run normally. I've had both for two years now.

  • Axis 700 - CPU Temp and Sys Fan Control Problems

I have just received an Axis 700 barebones. I ordered a 700 Lite with the fanless processor but I received a system with C7-D 1.5GHz processor and a system fan !. The heatsink looks the same as the Titan 700.
The BIOS and PC Alert report a CPU temp of 64C immediately on start-up rising to 70C at idle and 100C under heavy load. System temp is steady at aound 30C. I've measured the heatsink temp with thermometer and it's about half the value reported by PC Alert.
The system fan in the heatsink is running at full speed but BIOS and PC Alert reports 0 rpm. If I slow the fan almost to a stop with a piece of paper, I do get a fan speed of 1000-2000 rpm.
It feels like a BIOS problem but the MSI website only has a single version, v1.00. My board has version v1.1B4.
Does anybody have a similar experience?

It could be something wrong with the CPU FAN, else if you think that its BIOS issue you can ask MSI here: http://ocss.msi.com.tw/

  • Lobotomo Fan Control

Ok got my MBP 2 days ago.. installed Lobotomo's Fan Control. Read on the internet that once you install it, it messes with Apple's preset fan-adjusting option in the firmware?
On the download page for this software, it even says "For safety, it leaves the original automatic fan speed control intact."...
I followed the instructions on their page for uninstall.. how do I make sure that Apple's original thing is still intact? Should I just goahead and use smc Fan Control?
I'm freaking out a little here... new 2500$ laptop lol

I don't know about outsmarting the engineers, but I know these little facts:
    1. my new iMac 24" 2.8 Ghz with default settings is running in excess of 70 degrees centigrade for power supply (like 78 at high load) - and default fan control does not do anything about it - fan speed stays at lowest setting.
    2. When I raise the lowest default fan speed a little (from 1200 to 1500 or 2000 for CPU fan, which also cools the power supply) - I manage to keep my power supply within 60 degrees at all times.
    3. I don't have factual knowledge of how long my power supply is going to last if operated at 70C and above, but my guess is that keeping it below 60 WILL PROLONG ITS LIFE!
also remember that smart engineers only care about 1 year warranty period, while I care a bit further into the future!

  • MSI Z77 mpower fan controll

    MB: MSI Z77 MPower
In bios the auto option is avaliable only for CPUFAN and SYSFAN1 SYSFAN2. At the same time in ControlCenter it is possible to enable System Smart fan controll for each fan.
Is there any way to save selected options in Controll Center and automaticly apply them on sturtup?

    Hi
CC shows very first settings taken from BIOS. So whatever its set in BIOS, CC will show this by default. And sadly cannot be changed to be applied differently. Yet you can change settings in BIOS and you should not need to use CC for fan control.

  • CPU Smart Fan Not working

Hi! I am using the Z97 Gaming 7 with a H55 Corsair Water Cooler. Somehow when I tried to use the smart fan control it doesnt work on my system. The fan keeps spinning at 100% although I the temperature is at 30+ Celcius only. The smart setting is the fan is only supposed to spin at about 20% speed when it's 30+ Celcius. However the System Fan Smart Control seems to be working as the speed actually follows the temperature of the system. Why is this happening? Is there something wrong with the motherboard or the cpu smart fan control.

Sorry let me rephrase my question as I was typing half asleep last night  .
Actually in the MSI Command Center, the smart fan control was setup in a way that the fan should be spinning at 20 to 30% of the max speed while the CPU temperature is at 30+ Celcius but in my case the fan was still spinning at 100%. In the setting the fan should only spin at 100% if only the CPU reach 80 Celcius but in my case it's already reaching max speed. I tried to manually control the speed of the fan thru the Command Center using the manual mode and it fails as well the speed is still at 100%. As for the System Fans, I am able to control the speed thru the smart fan control whereby the speed of the fans will adjust accordingly to the temperature of the system. Looking forward to getting some feedback here. Thanks.

  • Fan control questions

    Hi
I have a mid 2008 2.8Ghz iMac with the stock 320 Gb HD and 4 Gb ram. It runs fine but I am worried about how hot the case gets at times, in particular the top left corner. I have iStat widget installed too which shows what I think are reasonable temps most of the time, but sometimes even after just everyday use (browsing etc...) some of the temps seem high (power supply is presently at 75c). The fan speeds don't seem to increase much at all from the factory minimums. I know about smc fan control and iMac fan control, but I have a couple of questions before I decide to use them.
    1. Do you think I need to be worried about this?
    2. What damage could I cause by running the fans harder?
    3. If I use these utilities to push the fans harder than Apple recommends, will I void my Apple Care?
    Looking forward to your answers
    Paul

An utility like smcFanControl only changes the minimum fan speed setting. You are still running the fans well below its maximum capability. So the change is to the low end of the speed range, not the high end. You CAN set it high enough so that the minimum fan speed sounds like a small vacuum cleaner, but I would not set it that way for any length of time. I just tried it once to see what it sounded like with the fans running at a high speed (never heard them before). There is a max possible setting, so you can't set it to a crazy high number.
I use smcFanControl and have the fans set about 25% higher than the default speed. I still can't even hear them at that setting, so I figured I wasn't doing any harm and it may help my iMac run cooler (not that noticed any issues with heat).
I can't see how it would void AppleCare. Unless you set it to sound like a vacuum cleaner all the time (which would be really annoying), you are running the fans well within their normal operating range.
Note: The adjusted minimum fan speed is only in effect while smcFanControl is running in the background. It does not change any system or hardware settings. To go back to the default settings, just quit smcFanControl.

  • Is it bad to use Fan Control?

So I was looking into running Boinc (donating CPU time to run science projects aka grid computing) on my computer and installed Fan Control so I turn up my fans to keep to comp cooler. I have hence been convinced that it isn't the best idea to run your CPU so high on an MBP since I didn't want to wear out the fan and/or damage any hardware near the CPU. I still have Fan Control installed. Is this okay? I have heard mixed things about manually controlling fan speeds? Should I go to the trouble of uninstalling, or can I just leave it on low settings? What settings should I put it on?
Thanks for all of your help!
And a shout out to all those students out there: Happy winter break! We made it!

There really is no need for third-party fan controls. The OS is already configured to increase fan speeds in response to higher operating temperatures. So uninstalling the software is appropriate. However, you need to return the fan configuration to its original setting(s) which is an idle speed of 2000 RPM for each fan (if your model has more than one.) Once you do that you can then uninstall the software using the uninstaller, if it has one. Otherwise, see the following:
    Uninstalling Software: The Basics
Most OS X applications are completely self-contained "packages" that can be uninstalled by simply dragging the application to the Trash. Applications may create preference files that are stored in the /Home/Library/Preferences/ folder. Although they do nothing once you delete the associated application, they do take up some disk space. If you want you can look for them in the above location and delete them, too.
Some applications may install an uninstaller program that can be used to remove the application. In some cases the uninstaller may be part of the application's installer, and is invoked by clicking on a Customize button that will appear during the install process.
Some applications may install components in the /Home/Library/Applications Support/ folder. You can also check there to see if the application has created a folder. You can also delete the folder that's in the Applications Support folder. Again, they don't do anything but take up disk space once the application is trashed.
Some applications may install a startupitem or a Log In item. Startupitems are usually installed in the /Library/StartupItems/ folder and less often in the /Home/Library/StartupItems/ folder. Log In Items are set in the Accounts preferences. Open System Preferences, click on the Accounts icon, then click on the LogIn Items tab. Locate the item in the list for the application you want to remove and click on the "-" button to delete it from the list.
Some software use startup daemons or agents that are a new feature of the OS. Look for them in /Library/LaunchAgents/ and /Library/LaunchDaemons/ or in /Home/Library/LaunchAgents/.
If an application installs any other files the best way to track them down is to do a Finder search using the application name or the developer name as the search term. Unfortunately Spotlight will not look in certain folders by default. You can modify Spotlight's behavior or use a third-party search utility, Easy Find, instead. Download Easy Find at VersionTracker or MacUpdate.
Some applications install a receipt in the /Library/Receipts/ folder. Usually with the same name as the program or the developer. The item generally has a ".pkg" extension. Be sure you also delete this item as some programs use it to determine if it's already installed.
There are also several shareware utilities that can uninstall applications:
    AppZapper
    Automaton
    Hazel
    CleanApp
    Yank
    SuperPop
    Uninstaller
    Spring Cleaning
Look for them at VersionTracker or MacUpdate.

  • 17" unibody: temperature/fan control buggy. again every book affected?!

i've heard that the new 17" books are also affected by the buggy smc fan control just like the 15" late 08 MBP! anyone can confirm this? so has anyone tested his new MBP (especially the 2.93GHz version) just like described in this thread?:
    http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=1823105&start=0&tstart=15
    1. put your book to sleep and wake it up
    2. start two instances of 'yes > /dev/null' in the terminal
    3. check the temps and the fan speed with the istat pro widget
    4. the fans won't speed up (speed stucks @ 2k rpm) and the CPU temp will reach >105°C / 221°F

    samuel1 wrote:
I have seen laptops with intel cpus from every single brand have problems with temp reporting and then fan control on the book. HP, Dell, Lenovo, Apple, its everywhere! millions of models! If you panic everytime you have to adjust the fans yourself, you'll be in a panic for the rest of your laptop-using life.
Forget it and up the fans with SMC fan control!
and again, read the linked thread.
if you reset the smc, the fan control is ok. if you heat up the cpu the second time or you put your MBP to sleep and wake it up the fan control is strangely faulty! the intel cpu isn't reporting the temperature wrong!
and a very important thing i want to add: as soon as the cpu reaches ~105°C it underclocks itself! this state lasts up to 5mins until the fans slowly kick in!
