G580 swap hdd to sdd SOLVED!!!!!

Hello,
I just purchased a Lenovo g580 with win preinstalled.
the computer seems extremely slow, and was being choked by the SLOW hard drive, So I purchased an ocz vertex 3 SDD to replace the hard drive
I ran into problems, I figured I could just install the SSD and reload win8 and use a coa key on bottom of computer...
after turning over the notebook, I see there is no coa for win8 preinstalled systems, well, ok   I know how to get the code from the system, I got the coa and entered it into the retail win8 install program, and no go, was not a coa for retail install
I tried all the forums to see if I could just simply copy the drive... after trying dozens of free copy drive programs, and MANY reloads, I found a way to do this and was so easy.. and I wasted so much time.... on the info boards.. no body knew how to do this unless you order the recovery cd's from Lenovo for 89 bucks
Here is how, purchase Paragon Migrate OS to SSD 3.0.. It's only $19.99 and it works!!
http://www.paragon-software.com/technologies/components/migrate-OS-to-SSD/
simple, install, run the program with SSD plugged in via usb adapter/  I had my ssd plugged into usb port using an SATAIII adapter I purchased at tiger direct, compusa..
program asks for where you would like to copy HDD to?   select SSD and go!
5 minutes later, it was done, power down, replace HDD with SSD, restart into bios, select boot to your new SSD, save changes, and BAMM!   it works !
Hope this helps everyone

This is how I did (thanks to the information I found here: https://forums.lenovo.com/t5/IdeaPad-Y-U-V-Z-and-P-series/Backing-up-Z500-Touch-Hdd/td-p/1118253).
To follow this procedure, you will need an empty minimum 16 GB usb-stick and preferably a 2nd PC besides your G580 (to avoid swapping harddisks several times), and a thingy to connect internal hard disk drives to an usb-port.
1. Create a recovery drive on your stick using the recovery utility of Windows8:
Sidepanel -> search "recovery" -> klick on Settings -> klick on "create a recovery drive".
2. Take out old harddisk, put in SSD.
3. Boot pc from stick and reinstall system with OneKeyRecovery. The reinstall will stop and abort, if the SSD is smaller than the original HDD, but this step will give you information that you need to change the formatting parameters in the recovery program.
4. Take out the SSD and connect it to another PC (or swap back to the old HDD in the G580) and read out the number and size of partitions on the disk using File manager or some disk utility. There will be some small partitions, and there will be a large unformattet section. Note the size of the unformatted section. In my case, 234 GB. (240 GB SSD): If you lack the hardware to connect the SSD externally to a PC, you can of course calculate the result on the base of the formatting information of the old HDD.
5. On the Recovery stick, search up the file called
ReCreatePartitions. Open it in Notepad or another text editor. Save a copy of the unchanged file as ReCreatePartitionsOld.
Find the following two lines:
"create partition primary size= NN" (in my case: 428032)
"format quick fs=ntfs label= Windows8_OS"
Change the value of NN to (size of unformatted section on your SSD - 30 GB). I set NN to 202000, to be a little on the safe side. The 30 GB allow for the recovery section on the SSD.
Save ReCreatePartition.
6. Put the SSD and the Recovery stick in your Lenovo and start it with OneKeyRecovery. Follow the instructions for reinstalling the system. Marvel at the speed of the reinstall and rejoice about the $20 you avoided spending! :-)
In my case, I ended up with a new install with the same structure of partitions as the old one. However, the recovery partition (D:, appr. 30 GB) is empty. So I better hold on to the USB-stick.

  • What happend if I just swap HDD with my old macbook instead of a proper migration?

    jajaja
    Dear all,
I just bought a new macbook pro. I still have my old Macbook (the white one).
The old one has a 500GB 7200 rpm HDD and the new macbook the same but 5400rpm.
In addition, I need to migrate 200GB of information
Could I just swap HDD and then repair OSX or something like that?
My biggest fear is that everything seems ok but internally there's a huge mess, and that I will regret it in the future.
    Any obs is welcome! ThankS!

@ Melophage: ya, is the smart idea, but if i have to backup 200gb, then i just migrate them to my new macbook and problem solved xD
@Niel& LowLuster: but what if I use a bootable version of maverick on a usb stick and reinstall the OS?
maybe I will be able to keep the files and reinstall a correct OSX w/ its necessary drivers?  (thats the idea)
Well, my first impression with this round of answers is that better not to do it  jejeje

  • My late 2009 macbook stopped booting up after swapping hdd's with a macbook of the same model with a newer OS what happened did I somehow update my older Mac hardware with newer OS software because it won't recognize the original hdd anymore

I swapped hdd's with two diff os's and now I'm getting the question mark in the folder icon after replacing the two to their original MacBooks but they work while swapped I realized afterwards that I wanted to use the newer OS in my external enclosure and keep the older hdd in the macbook it was in from the start ive reset pram tried to boot to the menus or what have you by following the step in these forums but my macbook isn't even recognizing the original hdd that came in the macbook

Try booting to the Startup Manager and select your system drive.

Will it boot the disk when it is in an external enclosure but not when it is intsalled internaly?  If so it may be the internal SATA cable that is bad (an inexpensive part).

  • Change HDD to SDD

I have macbook pro 13 early 2011 if i change my HDD to SDD i still have ox reinstall with this feather Command (⌘) and R keys for recovery partition??

You really can't use the Command and R keys to get to Internet recovery after you've replaced your drive - that only will work to boot you into your Recovery partition on your old drive.
However, if you install the drive and use the Command, option/alt and R keys, you can boot into Internet Recovery and format your new SSD and install the system that shipped with your machine installed on your SSD.
But if you've data on your drive that you want on your SSD, I would recommend buying an enclosure for your drive (OWC has some good pricing) and using Carbon Copy Cloner to clone your old drive onto your new SSD. See this user tip - https://discussions.apple.com/docs/DOC-4122.
Any more questions - just ask. A lot of us here have installed SSDs in place of old hard drives.

  • Satellite S50T-B - Adding RAM and swapping HDD for SSD

    HI there,
I have recently purchased the Satelitte S50t-B laptop and have a few question about upgrading:
    1. What is the recommended RAM to add (8GB)
    2. What is the recommended SSD to add?
    3. Are there any instructions to add RAM and an SSD to my laptop?
    4. Will I void my warranty by installing more RAM and swapping the current hard drive for an SSD?
    Thank you for your help

This notebook is listed on Toshiba page:
    http://www.mytoshiba.com.au/products/computers/satellite/s50/pspq8a-008008/specifications
    - What is the recommended RAM to add (8GB)
    The unit supports 16GB RAM, so you can add an second PC3-12800 8GB DDR3L (1600Mhz) SO-DIMM module (i.e PA5104U-1M8G)
    - 2. What is the recommended SSD to add?
Its up to you there are different SSD drive on the market and most of the 2.5 SATA SSD drives should be compatible.
    - 3. Are there any instructions to add RAM and an SSD to my laptop?
It looks like both parts (RAM as well as SSD/HDD) are not user upgradable since there is no separate access to the memory or HDD bay. This means that whole plastic cover at the bottom of the unit needs to be remove in order to get access to these part.
But as far as I know this would cancel the device warranty!!!
    - 4. Will I void my warranty by installing more RAM and swapping the current hard drive for an SSD?
If you want to keep the warranty valid, such upgrade should be performed by authorized engineer.

  • Is it possible to swap HDD's from my iMac onto my MacBook Pro?

I currently have an iMac G5 (first gen w/ out the camera on it) that had a 250GB HDD on it but would love to swap it onto my MacBook Pro (first gen aswell) that only has a 80GB HDD. While doing my research, I noticed that they only go up to 200GB 4200-rpm drive. Is this correct? My MacBook Pro is : 1.83 GHz Core Duo. I don't know if that has anything to do with it. Thanks in advance.

The drive in the imac is likely to be a 3.5 inch desktop drive so it won't fit in the MBP.
The MBP takes a 2.5 inch sata drive. You can get them up to 250gb and 300gb is near if not already here.
Take a look at www.macsales.com to see what hard drive upgrades are open to you. You don't actually have to buy a drive from them.
    Best of luck.

  • Swapped HDD of Pavilion G6 2264sa with HDD of a Pavilion G6 1331sa / Brightness not wking..!!

    Hi there,
Hope everyone is well and wonder if anyone can help me. My problem is my daughter’s laptop, she is in the middle of studying at Uni and all her work is on her laptop which is a:
    HP Pavilion G61331sa/1.6 GHZ AMD Quad-Core A8-3520M APU with Radeon 6620G + 7450M Dual Graphics/ 6GB Memory/ Video Graphics AMD Radeon HD 6620G + 7450M Dual GPU (1 GB DDR3 dedicated)/ HDD 750 GB SATA (5400 rpm)/ Running Windows 7.
My son unfortunately accidentally spilt juice onto the laptop. I quickly took all the preventive measures, switching off power/ removing battery/ Hard Drive and turning laptop upside down. I also left it in the airing cupboard for a couple days to dry out then tried it again. It powers up and the power light stays on and the fan works but the caps lock button light keeps flashing and the screen remains blank even when I try to use an external monitor via the HDMI connections again the external monitor is blank. It would seem that most of the spillage was on the left side of the keyboard as the keys are very sticky that side. I spoke to HP about my problem as the laptop is still under warranty however as we all know it does not cover accidents and No, we did not get accident cover. As my daughter is in the middle of exams a solution was needed pronto. It was suggested by HP techy guy to purchase the modern equivalent with the same HDD and just change over the HDD and update all the drivers.
    I bought a HP Pavilion G6 2264sa/ Intel® Core™ i3-2370M/4GB Memory/750GB SATA Hard Disk Drive/ Graphics Intel HD Graphics 3000 (up to 1.65 GB) running windows 8 (64 bit).
I changed over the HDD as suggested and updated all the drivers. There was a slight problem booting up but just had to go into BIOS at start up (F1 key) Boot Configuration/ Settings and let it know to Boot from HDD as opposed to CD ROM etc. The HP Pavilion G6 2264sa booted up with the G6 1331sa HDD and works fine. My daughter does not have to worry about spending time finding her away around a new laptop and windows 8; everything is just where she knows it is.
The only problem I am having is the Brightness controls (f2 and f3) do not seem to work and the screen remains very bright to the degree of causing a headache. I have uninstalled and installed the Graphics Driver but still no control over Brightness...!!!!!!
Any Ideas where i may have gone wrong??
Your suggestions and ideas will be very much welcomed and appreciated.
    Many thanks in advance...

  • Swapping HDD with SSD (+Software Cloning)

    Hi all,
I've been wanting to swap the 2011 MacMini's HDD with an SSD drive. I am currently running Windows 7 on the mini. What would be the best way to clone everything from the current MacMini internal HDD to the new SSD before the swap? Also, are any additional parts (cables etc.) needed to install the SSD or is everything inside reusable?
    Thanks.

Please note that changing the hard drive is not considered
a user servicable function, only changing RAM is and therfore
will void your warranty (clearly stated in the user manual).
Just needed to put in that disclaimer so that you were aware.
You haven't stated, but I am assuming you are using Win7
in a Bootcamp partition, which will complicate things.
There are many SATA to USB adapters out there, so you will
want to get one of them.  You will eventually neeed Winclone
(free) to put the Win7 volume on the new drive.  Also, to be safe,
    get a USB stick.
Cloning the OSX stuff will be simple.
    1.  Create a Recovery volume on the USB stick by first
downloading Lion Recovery Assistant.  Should do this
any way whenther changing hard drives or not.
    2.  Connect the SSD with the SATA adapter while booted
into the current system and Partition with GUID scheme
and format with Mac OSX journalled.
    3.  With your Recovery USB stick plugged in, reboot holding
          down Option key.
    4.  When presented with the boot selection, select the USB recovery
          stick.
    5.  Once things load up select Disk Utility and do a Restore
from the internal volume to the external.  This will clone
the Recovery HD as well as the OSX install.
    6.  Have lunch, do laundry or whatever as this will take awhile.
    7.  When the Restore is complete, as a quick check, reboot
holding the Option key and select the newly cloned volume
to insure it is bootable.  It will take time to boot since it is USB
but a good check before putting it in the case.
    8.  If all is well, you can swap your drives.
    9.  Next, boot to the new internal an run Bootcamp and create your
Windows partion, follow through to the Win7 install and from
the windows installer format the partition to NTFS but then
quit the installer after this is complete.
    10.  Next, plug your old drive into the SATA adapter and run Winclone.
You should be able to select the external WIndows partition
as the source and the internal Windows patition as destination
           and just clone.
1 through 7 will definately get you OSX and Recovery HD on the new drive
and the rest "should" get you Windows.

  • HDD to SDD clone drive, will not bootup. Are there changes in the Bios I have to make?

Hello Ronk10.  I understand you're unable to boot your notebook after installing an SSD.
You mention that you're getting BIOS errors.  What are the errors that you're receiving?
You may need to update your BIOS in order to properly use the new SSD.  If you provide me with your model number I'll locate the latest BIOS for you.  This document can show you where it is located.
I will keep an eye out for your response.  Have an excellent day!

  • HDD vs SDD - QuickBench results

Here's the results of tests I ran today using QuickBench 4 from SpeedTools.com:
    Small Random READ 4K - 1024K
    HDD 80G = 9MB/s
    SDD 64G = 35MB/s *
    Small Random WRITE 4K - 1024K
    HDD 80G = 11MB/s
    SDD 64G = 16MB/s *
    Small Sequential READ 4K - 1024K
    HDD 80G = 40MB/s *
    SDD 64G = 35MB/s
    Small Sequential WRITE 4K - 1024K
    HDD 80G = 30MB/s *
    SDD 64G = 18MB/s
    Medium Sustained READ (2MB - 10MB)
    HDD 80G = 39MB/s
    SDD 64G = 50MB/s *
    Medium Sustained WRITE (2MB - 10MB)
    HDD 80G = 41MB/s *
    SDD 64G = 24MB/s
    Large Sustained READ (20MB - 100MB)
    HDD 80G = 35MB/s
    SDD 64G = 51MB/s *
    Large Sustained WRITE (20MB - 100MB)
    HDD 80G = 35MB/s *
    SDD 64G = 29MB/s
(* means fastest of the two for a given test; notice that the HDD was faster for both read and write in the RANDOM tests. That translates to faster boots, faster app launches, and faster virtual memory.
It also excelled in medium and large sustained READ tests. That should help with video playback.)

It doesn't surprise me that you see some variation. The problem with the numbers above is that they haven't bothered to show statistical significance for the results they have generated and they haven't done the measurements on more than one machine of a type. Third-party Mac enthusiast numbers can be taken as grain of salt and the take home message I interpret is not so huge a difference in the MB Air options with regards overall performance. For most interested consumers I would advise them to simply go to their Apple store and test the performance of the display models hands on. Apart from early adopters for most consumers the base model is probably the way to go imo.

  • Swapping HDD for SSD

I'm thinking about buying a 17" MacBook Pro and am having difficulty deciding between a 320GB 7,200 RPM drive or the 128 GB SSD. I don't really know if the 128 GB SSD will make huge amounts of difference for the cost, so I'm wondering if it's possible to buy the 320 GB for now and then upgrade later. Would this be easy to do or would there be different connectors involved?
Apologies if this has been asked before -- I couldn't find an answer.

    Hi.
It appears that Apple authorizes memory and hard drive swap on unibody MacBook Pros and the procedure seems very easy (it was not so for previous MacBook Pro, or iBooks).
You can find it on the MacBook Pro support page.
Physically, SSDs are the same as standard hard disks. So as long as you choose a 2.5" SATA SSD (with the correct height, but I believe that they all are 9.5mm high, which is the standard for notebook HDDs), you will be OK.
So go ahead with the standard HDD and upgrade to a SSD when you want.
At this time, you will be able to copy the content of your old drive to the new one (as long as it fits ...) by placing it in a USB enclosure, using a free program called Carbon Copy Cloner. You will need another drive (or another Mac) as startup disk.
    H
    Hops this helps,
    Jérôme.

  • Mac Mini HDD to SDD?

    Hey folks,
New to the forum... used the search feature and found this: http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=1957930&start=60&tstart=45
Applies to MBAs, but can it apply to Mac Mini?
I am planning to buy a Mac Mini with HDD and will soon migrate to SSD when the price decreases. So, can I change from HDD to SSD with Mac Mini?
    Let me know!

As long as you are using the same kind of drive (PATA or SATA) that the mini came with, you should have no major issues. The problem with using a SSD is that it has a more limited read/write lifespan compared to a regular rotating media hard drive. There are ways to avoid this, first and foremost by having enough memory (RAM) to not require a bunch of page-ins and psge-outs. I think there may be other differences in how Mac OS X is installed with an SSD, but I'm not sure if that is something automated once the installer sees what kind of drive it's being installed to. Other applications which normally use disk cache, like browsers, can be configured not to in many cases. This will also save drive lifespan.
