G585 no boot from CD option

I have done some research and it seems like I would need to put a new BIOS on. Would anyone know which BIOS i need to load in order to get CD boot option? The goal is to install Windows 7 on this laptop.

Hey! I just did this today! To go to your BIOS settings, press the little button to the right of your power button while your laptop is powered down. Afterwards, navigate through the menus you are given to your boot options. Since you're installing a new OS and now about BIOS settings, I'll assume you're knowledgable enough to figure this out. If not, you can get a hold of on Skype with the name "Arglekargle" and I'll be more than happy to assist you. The G585 comes formatted in GPT format. You'll need to format to MBR to install W7. Here's a quick guide how.
To convert the boot disk from GPT to MBR:
Insert your Windows 7 installation media and boot.
AT BIOS, you will see boot order as whatever, but you will see UEFI dvd, but also will see your DVD writer (say HP 1260i) without any UEFI prefix. Select that boot device (without UEFI prefix)
After booting you see the Install Windows 7 screen, press Shift + F10 to open a command prompt.
At the command prompt, type Diskpart, press Enter.
Type List Disk, press Enter.
Type Select Disk # (where # is the number your drive shows up as), press Enter.
Type Clean, press Enter.
Type Convert MBR, press Enter.
Type Exit, press Enter.
Close the Command Prompt window.
Click the "Next" button.
Click the "Install now" button.
Accept the terms and click the "Next" button.
Choose "Custom: Install Windows only (advanced)."
Let me know if you have any other questions!

• RS482M4-ILD: How to boot from a USB Drive? Can't find the option in BIOS!!!

Hi!
I have a USB Pen Drive as well as External USB 2.0 HDD. I'd like to know how to enable the Boot from USB Option in my mobo: RS482M4-ILD BIOS.
I have seen everywhere but, still couldn't find the option.
Thanks in Advance.

Hi:
I believe you need to to into the BIOS and change it to legacy mode to be able to boot from any other device than the hard drive.

• Can no longer boot from hard drive

I wanted to get my MacBook Pro (OSX 10.6.8) to boot from a CD, which it did (turns out CD was faulty and didn't work). In order to do this I went to the System Options and selected boot from Disk option.
Only problem is now my Mac will only boot from a CD and not from the hard drive! How do I get it to boot from the hard drive again?

Hold down the option key while booting, then you will have your selection again.
Once in OS X, set it as the boot disk in System Preferences.

• Can't boot from Install Disc while trying to isntall a new hard drive...

So last week my macbook 4 froze. I powered it down and when restarting, got the grey screen and apple logo and spinning wheel underneath. After about 3 minutes the machine would just shut off.
I ran the AHT and got this error: 4hdd/11/40000004: SATA(0,0)
Searched around for a bit and the internet's consensus was that my hard drive has failed. I bought a new one today and can't seem to get up and running again.
With the new drive in and the Install Disc in, regular start up get's me the blinking folder.
Starting while pressing C, while pressing D, while doing any other combination just gets me the grey blinking folder with question mark.
When I start with OPTION key, I can see the boot from CD option but after selecting, I just get a plain grey screen. Not really sure where to go from here? Any advice is appreciated.
Thanks

Perhaps the setting on the replacement hard disk drive is not correct
for the computer configuration you are using it in. There are such items
as jumper-pin settings: Master, Slave, auto-detect; and so on.
If the hard disk drive and the optical drive have a similar setting, neither
one could be in a position to do much.
Since I am unfamiliar with the correct settings for your computer, perhaps
someone who has more information and/or experience will reply to this.
Good luck & happy computing!

• R31: how to boot from usb?

I would like to install Linux on my thinkpad r31. Because it seems like the cdrom drive has some issues, I want to boot from usb. I have searched for how to do this, but I cannot find anything.
These are my boot options, with my usb pen drive attached:
https://www.dropbox.com/s/4idr9gstmt7c7b2/IMG_20140123_195710.jpg
I read on another forum that other thinkpads (t-series or x-series) have the boot from usb option in bios, but the R series doesn't have this option?
What can I do to be able to boot from usb?
this is what I have concerning the bios version:
usb floppy is on top of the boot devices. under hard disks, i only see installes hard disk, no usb drive.. i'm using bios version: 3.110 (1FETF1WW), date: 2004-11-16
embedded controller version: 02.29.12

From what I recall - it's been a long time since I've last touched a R31 - they will NOT boot from USB under any circumstances.
Media drives are inexpensive nowadays, try replacing yours and install the OS from there.
Good luck.

• Trying to install SL on a new hard-drive for my iMac, when asked which disk to install on it gave me no options, i followed advice from another forum and created a partition, now can't boot from the new drive at all. Help?

I've had **** with my iMac, the hard-drive failed so i replaced it with a new 1TB Samsung drive. Then when i tried to install SL from the install disk, all went to plan until it asked me which drive i wanted to install it on, where it came up with a box where my options should have been, but instead it didn't give me any options to install it on any drive i.e. it asked which drive i wanted to install it on but no drives came up to select.
So i followed the advice from another forum, look at the 'Extended Hard-drive preparation' response
( https://discussions.apple.com/message/10576009#10576009 )
After following these instructions i have now got a new partition, but when i restarted my computer to install SL on the drive, the option to boot from the drive is now not available, now i must boot from the install disk, whereas before i was able to boot from either the install disk or the hard drive. The hard drive is still visible in disk utility as it always has been, but i am now unable to boot from it, let alone install SL.
Please help my iMac has been broken for months and i've been trying to fix it for so long and am getting problem after problem. Thank you!

Hi db2
That off the shelf MS-DOS / FAT-32 drive needs to re-partitioned GUID Partition Table / Mac OS Extended (Journaled) before you can install OS X and Startup your Intel iMac from it.
1. Boot from your original install or retail SL DVD and open Disk Utility.
2. Highlight the new HD in the list of drives and select the Partition tab.
3. Under Volume Scheme select 1 Partition and click on the Options... button.
4. Select GUID Partition Table in the drop down window and click OK.
5. Set the Format to Mac OS Extended (Journaled) and click the Apply button.
6. Once thats done, then you can do a clean SL Install, Restore from TM , your old HD or Bootable Clone.

• I have a Mac Pro with four hard drives. I currently have Lion installed on one hard drive. I want to have the option to boot from either Lion or Snow Leopard. How can I do this?

I have a Mac Pro with four hard drives. I currently have Lion installed on one hard drive. I want to have the option to boot from either Lion or Snow Leopard. How can I do this?

It's best to install Snow Leopard on one of the three remain drives without an Operating System.
You can then install the applications you need from the original media. Create a User Account using Setup Assistant.
Do you want to migrate User Accounts from the OSX LIon boot drive, or are you keeping the User Accounts separate?
Dual-booting just requires holding the option key during startup and selecting either Lion or Snow Leopard.

• IMac G5 won't boot. Attempted to install Leopard, wouldn't allow, then would not reboot in HD's Tiger, nor from OS DISK IN DRIVE. OPTION START shows both OS 's, but still won't boot from either. Grey screen , spinning pinwheel for 5 minutes, then shuts off

When I tried a custom leopard install(omitting all but canon printers), a window appeared that " I could not install OSX ON THIS DISK." I tried a full install again and a window appeared stating that " the HD was not formatted properly, would I like reformat in hfs extended HFS EXTENDED journalled and ERASE THE HD?" I use disk utility on leopard to reset the iMac to restart from the original Tiger OS on the HD, & that was when it refused to boot. During 1 attempt I even tried to boot with the C key held for many minutes to start fron the Tiger OS disk but the iMac wouldn't start the cd spinning. I did hear that familiar FIRMWARE UPDATE CHIME! but I was not upgrading firmware as none was downloaded, and Leopard did not tell me it required a firmware update first, when I attempted to install it. So: I get the chime when the power button is pressed. Option key finds the HD TIGER AND THE CD 's Tiger. I van choose both. But neither boots. Starting with the C key held doesn't boot. In every case the startup grey screen appears with the grey startup pinwheel, this continues for many minutes. Then it shuts itself off. Help help help. My son has Graduate School papers in progress, and I just fried his iMac. Thanks to all.

Simon:
Thanks very much for the suggestions! I tried your method of booting to the install CD while holding option (alt), and then running Disk Utility to repair the disk and the permissions. Even though it still told me the drive didn't need repairing, there were more permissions that needed repairing when booting this way (as opposed to when booting while holding the C key.)
Anyhow, after doing this, my computer restarted just fine from the hard drive. Mail works now and I'm about to try repairing permissions one more time, then shutting down and restarting again, this time without doing it from the install CD. Wish me luck...
OK. It booted up perfectly this time. I'm not quite sure why that worked, though. Anyone care to illuminate me as to why booting while holding option (alt) let Disk Utility do what it needed to, while booting while holding C didn't?
At this point I'm just curious. My problem has been solved!
Thanks again very much, Simon. I really appreciate it, mate.

• HT4818 I have installed bootcamp that worked properly. Then I have partitioned the OS X 10.8.2 and installed another OS X 10.8.2 and I have got two MAC boot options and Bootcamp disappeared from the Option menu. How can I boot Windows again and keep both

I have installed bootcamp by the bootcamp assistant and worked properly.
Then I have partitioned the OS X 10.8.2 and installed another Mountain Lion System and I have got two MAC boot options and Bootcamp disappeared from the Option menu. However, Bootcamp still remained in the Startup Disk in the System Preferences. When I tried to boot Bootcamp using the Startup Disk it did not boot and received a message that there is no bootable device. I have not lost any data and can read Bootcamp partition from both OS X systems. Please advise how can I boot Windows / Bootcamp again? Thank you.

Recommendation 1: Use a VM for this. It's essentially a giant C.F. to do this with native booting, and is potentially fragile.
But if you're going to ignore that and do this anyway, realizing that it can break anytime in particular with OS upgrades, and that it's very difficult to impossible to resize the three volumes once you've installed the systems:
1. create three partitions, setting each to be the size for OS X copy 1, copy 2, and Windows respectively. The Windows partition needs to be set to MS-DOS format (actually FAT32) which later in the Windows installer you'll reformat as NTFS. Do not use Boot Camp Assistant to resize/partition the disk, it simply won't work for this use case.
2. install OS X copy 1
3. install OS X copy 3
4. Use gdisk (available at sourceforge) which is a command line only application, to create a new hybrid MBR adding only the last partition (Windows) to the hybrid MBR and setting it to be bootable. As a concequence you will not be able to see/share either OS X volume from within Windows. The Windows NTFS volume will be visible from within OS X.
5. Install Windows to the only partition its installer should see (confirm size), you'll need to format it NTFS first, and I suggest using the fast format option if available.

• Error "Can't find boot device by boot options" when boot from ISO via AMT

Hello.
When I try to boot from ISO CD via AMT I got an error message:
"Can't find boot device by boot options"
Settings are similar to what I made in HP 8100, 8200 etc - SOL/IDER/KVM, network access enabled
Where could be a problem?
Prod. name: HP Compaq Elite 8300 Microtower PC
Prod. number: B0F41EA

Just wanted to follow up with this as I got a response from HP. It looks like it is at least the 2.9 BIOS version that has this issue. I know that at least the 2.51 BIOS version is unaffected.

Thank you.

How did you get a Lion OSX install disc? They don't exist. Do you mean the gray disks that came with your 2007 MacBook?
If you mean the gray disks, try starting up with the "c" key held down.
What version of OSX is on your MacBook now? Have you tried booting from the Recovery partition?
