G5DP - 10.3.9 - UAD-1 4.0 - LP 7.1.1 - Problems?

We were speaking of core audio overloads before the 7.1.1 update.
LP 7.1.1 seemed to tame the problems (not cure) I was having with one precessor going crazy from time to random time and giving a Core Audio error. Still happened, but less often.
But after upgrading to UAD-1 4.0 something new is going on. When these errors occur, I sometimes get a new error window (which I have never seen before) from the UAD-1 software. So there are 2 error windows (UAD-1 & LP) that need an 'OK' button pushed to get back to business, but I can't 'OK' either of them. All I can do is force quit LP and start again.
Another new error from UAD-1 is when loading songs that were fine before, I get a message saying "Sorry, some of your plug can't load" (not word for word) and a couple of my bus plugs will be bypassed. According to the UAD-1 meter, I'm running my 3 cards at 82%. I had a clone of my drive, so I could revert to 3.9 (re-installing 3.9 did not solve the problem) and with the same song, I can still ADD plugs without a problem.
I've emailed UA support and not gotten a response yet.
Just wondering if anyone one else in this boat...

That said, I was still on 103.9 last week until it seemed finally that it was causing more porblems then I was keepeing at bay..
Thanks for the input guys... I'm just s l o w to upgrade systems, until I know for sure that 'everything' is alright. I don't just run Logic on my system, I have some video and graphics that I need happening as well. So all the stars have to line up. Plus all the hardware.
I was wondering is anyone on X.3.9 had the same problem, or if it was just me. Perhaps I could save someone a bit of grief if they read this (back-up!).
But it might be time to upgrade...

  • 2 x UAD-1e + Mac Pro

    Hi everybody,
I hope somebody out there has the same system as I have ... just without my problems and therefore is able to give me some advice:
I'm running a Mac Pro 2,66GHz, 5 GB Ram and Logic 7.2.3. I put one UAD-1e card in PCI slot no. 4 (opposite to the graphic card). Still all fine. Now I added a 2nd card in slot no. 3 - problem starts:
I have an open song, 5 x EXS24 with drums, 1 Korg Wavestation plug, 11 (mono) audio tracks. So no big deal... runs flawless of course.
Added 4, 5 UAD (comp/eq) plugs, UAD performance meter says 12%. But then I add one more UAD plug, performance goes up to 20% and all I get to hear is "RRRRRRRRRRRRRR". Sounds like a sync error, system reports a midi-audio conflict. I tried verious settings and ended up with I/O buffer size 1024, being able to use one (1) more plug in from the UAD.
I used to run my old G5 with 1 UAD + 1 TC Powercore on 128 and no problem at all...
My audio interface is a RME Fireface 800. Is it true, that the FW bus also takes power from the PCI bridge?
Would it make sense to try different PCI slot positions? Well, I even traded my old Powercore to get a new PCIe one - still waiting for the software. But if the Mac isn't able to handle 2 UADs, how funny will it be with the Powercore card added ??
To make a long story short - is there anything I have to take care of or do differently in order to run 2 UADs in a MacPro?
    Thank you in advance,
    Joern

    To Eric ->
well ... as long as you're planing only to get 1 card, it should be fine. I mean, your problem seems to be a bit more complicated - I never had to restart my system due to any plug ins. Even "the UAD thing" doesn't crash the system, but makes me hit the stop button asap. I personally wouldn't switch to ProTools as this is a huge step, depending of how many other plug ins you already bought to your system.
Regarding the Mac Pro - sure we're kind of beta testers. I make my living doing graphic design and video editing. Music is just an excessive hobby... I could write you a novel about updates, upgrades, crossgrades, bug fixes etc. But it was my decision not to wait a little longer so I guess I shouldn't complain
A little update to whom it may concern...
I tested both UADs individually in the meantime, both work fine - hardware error excluded I'd say. I tested all possible PCI slots with no change, neither worse nor better.
But here's some news: having only one card installed I was able to load plug ins up to a 85% performance load on the UAD meter. Still not old G5-like, but an improvement. Closed the song, installed the 2nd card, opened it again, performance meter down to 42% and what do I get: "RRRRRRRRRR..."
I had to remove almost all of the plug ins on audio tracks until I could play the song. I tried again, leaving all plug ins on audio tracks, but removing one or two from the main outs. Haha, song's playing.
In this very song I'm using 14, i.e. 7 stereo outs to sum these on my analoge console. So it looks like using a plug in in a main out causes more stress than in a single audio track. And it doesn't matter, if it's just a litte gate or a big Neve EQ. Bypassed or not also doesn't make a difference. One too much is one too much.
So I can use quite many plug ins on audio tracks, but I have to be really careful on the main outs. Sure I could try a work-around, routing the audio track to the busses (with plug ins inserted) and then to the main outs. Nevertheless, reaching a CPU usage of approx. 60% with plug ins in audio tracks starts to create some irregular clicks and pops (no clipping...).
With my next try I copied the whole song project including samples onto my internal disk. Switched off all the external disks and ran the song. No big change ... it got better, it's playing, but after the 10th try to record the song from the console back into the system without one click I gave up.
Finally I wrote an email to UA support and see what happens...
    Have a nice sunday,
    Joern

  • How can I get the rest of my third party audio plugins (UAD & Altiverb) to show up in FCPX

    Hello Everyone,
In FCPX'as audio effects I can see the Logic (included with FCPX) plugins, as well as my own Celemony (Melodyne) & PSP Audioware plugins. However, my UAD plugins and Altiverb are not there. How do I get FCPX to see my other audio plugins that are also currently on my machine?
    Any help appreciated, thank you.

Hi, I'm thinking about taking the UAD plunge with the Xpander product. ANyone have any experiences, pro or con? I see there are probs with the UAD PCI cards and 8-cores -- anything similar with Xpander and MBP?

Hi James, i have been working with a Macbook Pro and the UAD Xpander
for the last 6 months without a single problem.
I am very happy with this setup, no crashes, no glitches.

  • Logic 7 with UAD Card!!!

Hey... Is it possible or not to work with thw uad plugins while I'm still recording and workin on a song, is there a way to make it work without latency or do i have to wait until they re-write the program...???

Oh I get it. A wink helps.
    Anyway...
Check your Plug-In Delay Compensation. It's under:
    Logic Pro> Preferences> Audio> General
For tracking I have it set to "Audio tracks and instruments". (For mixing it's on "All").
Remove (bypass) all plugs on your Busses.
Bypass all plugs on your Outputs.
Lower you buffer settings to 128:
    Logic Pro> Preferences> Audio> Drivers> I/O Buffer Size
Are you using more than one set of Outs?
    Give that a try.
Check the UAD users group for info about which slot to use (I don't know, I have 3 slots and 3 cards).

  • UAD-1 + Logic 7.1 = Latency??

    Hi all,
I just purchased a UAD-1 card, installed it and loaded UAD's latest software, 4.4.1. Upon first test it worked great, that was with one UAD plug on one vocal track. So last night I was itching to mix for real with this bad boy. But, as soon as I added a 2nd UAD track, and we're still only talking about on one track here, I start getting latency. Anyone had success with multiple UAD plugs on a single track sans the latency?
I did read on one comment that there was a bug with Logic where Logic's plug delay compensation only worked on the first insert when dealing with 3rd party plugs. Can this be true?? If so, would 7.2 fix this?
Also, anyone come across issues with 7.2 and 10.3.9?
Anyone think swapping my digi 001 card (which is in PCI slot 1) with the UAD card (slot 2) would make a difference?
Please help, right now for me to use my UAD card and have 3 simple plugs on one track, I have to bounce my track 2 times. So lame!
Oh, and when I look at the meters in both the UAD app and Logic both are around 20%, so it's not a CPU issue.

I run multiple UAD plug-ins on individual tracks, and have no latency problems.
I'll assume you do have the Delay Compensation settings in Logic set appropriately...?
Also, if I read you right, you were still on Panther, and just ordered Tiger? That might very well be a contributing factor, although I'm only speculating.
Anyhow, UAD 4.4 on Tiger 10.4.8 has no problems with 2 or even 3 UAD plug-in in succession (and it was always fine on earlier versions of Tiger as well).

  • I can't get waves, Slate Digital or UAD plugins to work/show as 64 bit plugs

I can't get waves, Slate Digital or UAD plugins to work/show as 64 bit plugs

Try setting Logic back to 32-bit mode then open Logic and see if it validates the plugins.

  • LP8, Leopard, UAD, RAM... the whole **** thing!

    Hi all,
Been reading lots of threads recently covering a whole range of issues, - a startling amount of which I have come across myself. Here are my experiences...
There's no doubt in my mind that Leopard & LP8 are having trouble with each other. This is of course really... REALLY irritating, though not unusual considering Leopard is @ v.2 and LP8 is v.0.1! This ALWAYS happens when Apple release a new OS or application. Much as I don't like it... it just does. So if you're looking for (relying on...) stability (or track counts) and you're currently using LP7 and Tiger, just keep on keeping on... DON'T upgrade yet! You'll save yourself a lot of time & frustration. If you're already in Leopard/LP8 and are getting pops & crackles, make sure your I/O buffer is 256 or above & make sure you turn off airport! Has been causing lots of people grief.
I'm pretty certain there are some major conflicts with UAD and LP8, (not surprising really given the OS is having trouble.) Other threads have mentioned slow/fragmented redraws when moving plug-in windows & the "spinning ball"; - for me, this only seems to start happening if I "mount" a UAD plug, ON SCREEN? Eg:- In one small (5 channel) project, I have a couple of instances of Sculpture, an ESM, ES2 & VSL running, with a couple of Apple Ad.Limiters, 1 delay designer, Ampeg SVX and CSR. And 1 instance of a UAD Dimension D. The project can be run with ALL their windows mounted on the screen & ALL can be moved around freely with no problems. EXCEPT, the Dimension D? If this is open (mounted) by itself, with no other plug-ins on screen, it can be moved freely. Open just ONE other plug in window and try to move EITHER of them a couple of cms & up comes the spinning ball and the resulting window is inevitably fragmented. The Mac's CPU meter is barely tickling 25% on any given core and the UAD meter reads 8%! - so we're not talking "stress" here people? I haven't had time to see if the same thing happens with other UAD plugs, but I'd say there's a good chance it would. Anybody else? Only interim work around I can suggest is to bear it in mind & close all other plug-in windows before you modify anything UAD. And "SAVE" before you do... lest the spinning ball gets stuck and you can't even force quit! (Yes... it does.)
Glad to report that SampleTank, Ampeg SVX & VSL have all been working perfectly in LP8. I've just moved house & much is still in storage, so I don't know about Guitar Rig 2. (Anybody?) SSL released v.2.53 for Duende about a month ago. Had MAJOR hassles with that before (something to do with addressing multiple cores), so am hoping it's been addressed. v.2.53 is apparently Leopard compatible. (Anybody?) Liquid Mix has been a non starter for me in LP8, as it hasn't been able to pass the AU validator. v.2.2 has just been released & is said to address this issue (as well as an issue with a Low pass filter) Anybody? FXpansion have just released V. 2.0.3.15 for BFD2. This is a PUBLIC BETA understand! I'm not game, but... Anyone else? BFD 1.5 is apparently compatible with LP8 but ONLY in Tiger. BFD 1.5 is also now discontinued, so there'll be no more updates for it.
RME (FireFace 400/800) seem to be at logger heads with apple at the moment & god only knows where or when it'll be sorted out. I haven't been able to get my ff800 to work at all... NOT HAPPY! Lots of peeved users on their forums with no end in sight... just a lot of buck passing. My old G5 now has it's very own ff800! I've just taken on an Apogee Duet which, although limited in I/O (& unbalanced outputs... blah, blah, blah) has been rock solid and sounds great. Better than the ff anyhow... in my humble opinion. If you're buying a new Mac & you're in the market for a new interface, I'd steer well clear of RME unfortunately.
Last but not least... RAM. Some users have posted that their machines have fallen into a blank screen/constant restart cycle/looping. I have come across this problem too... only after I'd upgraded to Leopard/LP8? Coincidence... perhaps? I suspected it was either RAM or a dodgy video card, so after 2 days of fiddling I took the machine to an apple centre & of course it started up without a hitch!? The tech there introduced me to a little freeware app. called "Rember", (Go to Versiontracker) which checks for faulty RAM. It found no problems. (While the machine was there he fixed the AWFUL vibration problem that had developed, but that's another story!) Upon return, the machine worked well for a couple of days, then began the grey screen & shutdown messages. Diagnostics pointed to RAM? I checked "About this Mac" and sure enough, it said I had 3Gig??? I restarted & it said I was back to 16? I ran "Rember" again & it said your RAM is good. The machine performed without fault for the rest of the day. It's worth mentioning at this point that, with UAD cards, if you want to put your machine into "deep sleep", you have to unload the UAD driver with their supplied Utility tool. The following morning I woke the machine from sleep and checked "About this Mac"... 16Gig. No problems. I always restart the Mac when woken from sleep, as it re-loads the UAD driver at start-up. It doesn't take long & I'd recommend it to anyone using UAD's. Checked "About this Mac" again... no problems. Worked away until lunchtime, unloaded driver & put machine to sleep. Came back, re-started, checked "About this Mac"... 12Gig? I was just a "little bit" annoyed. Shut it down, took the cover off & pushed the RAM cards; there was NO perceivable movement whatsoever... not even half a mil! Cranked her up again... 16 Gig! Ran "Rember"... all's good. Haven't had a problem since & that was about three weeks ago? SO... if you've had this same problem, there's hopefully a solution that won't see you gutting your Mac of RAM just to get the B*$t@*d working again! Fingers crossed for you.
My apologies for the length of this thread. Hope it helps some... or at least lets a few know that YOU ARE NOT ALONE!
    Cheers...

How much RAM does your super-fast modern desktop have? AND what is the size of your composition?
If you're getting spaces between the green bar, your RAM Preview options may include skip frames.
If you don't have enough RAM to cache a large (or long) video, you can lower the resolution that you're attempting to RAM Preview (in your comp window if you're using Auto, or in the RAM Preview options).  Unfortunately, it means that you'll be trading quality of the video playback for duration of frames played.
You can adjust the exposure of the video in the comp or footage windows by using the Exposure Button
Turn up the value to over/under expose the video, but it won't change the RENDER, just the way you look at it in the window.
You can toggle the icon on/off if you have a certain value you like to keep it set to.

  • Latency UAD+EZDrummer

Hi, I'm having Latency problems with Uad-1 PCIe on Logic 7.2.3, OS 10.4.8 the Latancy issues occur when Toontrack EZDrummer is used as multi channel Audio Instrument and it's Auxilaries are processed by Uad plugs. The delays begin when I tweek the plugins on the different Aux channels. This is very strange as I've done this before with no problems. My plugin delay compensation is set to All. So I'm really a bit confused, I've also talked to UA and Toontrack and they don't seem to have a answer. Any help would be very welcome, TIA.

  • UAD-1e on the way...any advice on choices?

I am looking to add a good combination of UAD-1 plugs to master both live classical recordings and studio recorded Pop/Rock/whatever. The ones that ship with the UAD are going to be great but still being somewhat new to all this I would love some advice on which plugs to get with my vouchers for mastering.
I do realize mastering is an artform in itself and you use whatever works for each project, and I have done lots of reading and experimenting, but I really just need advice on my voucher choice?
    -Thanks
    -Allan
    MacPro 3GHz, Macbook Pro, mac mini 1.42, Ibook g4 1.2,   Mac OS X (10.4.7)

    Allan,
If mastering is what you intend to do with the UAD plug-ins, the obvious choice would be their... mastering plug-ins.
Without a doubt, the 3 "must haves" would be UAD's Multiband Compressor, Precision Limiter, and Precision EQ.
With those three, you can accomplish most everything.
If you need to cut corners, IMO, you could not get the Precision EQ, and instead use Logic's Phase EQ.
For mixing, the undeniable choices are the 1176, LA2A, and Fairchild compressors.
Their Roland stuff is simply amazing also. RE-201 Space Delay (tape Delay), Dimension D chorus and CE-1 Chorus/vibrato. But that depends on your personal needs for those types of effects.
And then there's the 140 plate Reverb. If you use Reverb in any of your mixes, this is a good one to have. It's by far the "most lush" sounding plate plug-in I have ever heard. But the kind of stuff you mix should be a consideration in buying this. I highly recommend it though.
So, I've mentioned more plug-ins than your voucher will cover, for sure. Do start with the mastering ones though, if that's going to be your primary use.

  • Logic 7.2 , UAD 1 and waves

Does anyone know if waves plugins do work w/ Logic 7.2? I have an mac pro 3ghz 4 gigs of ram. I am using waves 5.2 for w/intel support. Cubase SX3, Spark XL and Logic LE see the waves and load correctly. Logic 7.2 does not see the waves folder at all niether does waveburner. But logic does see the uad 1 but Cubase and Logic LE cannot connect to the UAD 1 hardware. Any one else having this problem?
    G4 dual 867, G5 2.0 dual, imac G4 1.33, Mac Pro 3GHz   Mac OS X (10.4.8)

If LE sees the Waves plugs, but LP doesn't, then then only difference is probably the AU Manager. Start that (Logic -> Preferences -> Start AU Manager), and make sure that the Waves stuff is enabled and passes validation.
As for the UAD, run the UAD meter application. Does that correctly report the UAD-1 card is running and working correctly?

  • Bypassing any UAD plugin results in annoying delay

I have an easily reproducible situation here: the "Release DSP Resources on AudioUnit Bypass" feature does not seem to be working with Logic 7.2.3. In my test project, any UA plugin I add and then try to bypass brings the usage meter to zero. Additionally, this introduces annoying delays in playback for a few moments. The "Live Mode" setting does not seem to make a difference, and this happens with all UA plugins.
Any other UAD-1 users out there seeing this? I've tried just about everything I can think of: changed buffer sizes, tried different settings for Process Buffer Range, tried playback pre-roll. I'm out of ideas.
BTW, the workaround is to load the panel for the plugin and use it's power or "in/out" switch to turn it off. That seems to work fine during playback but is rather inconvenient.
    Dual 2.5GHz PowerMac   Mac OS X (10.4.9)

This is much more than a second. If I have an insert plugin on the snare track and bypass it, it's clearly way behind the overhead tracks for several seconds. It even does this when I re-enable the plugin.
Believe me, I adore the UAD plugins and I wouldn't think of trading them for anything, but I'd still like to know what causes this because it doesn't happen in Cubase 4. Logic doesn't seem to be respecting that checkbox I mentioned in the UAD software, so the problem might be on their end, but regardless - it should not be happening.

  • Logic 8, macbook pro, and uad 1 expander users

just wondering if anyone has experience using the uad 1 expander with logic 8 on their macbook pro. i had the original pci version a few years ago, but sold it when i went to my macbook pros for my main studio computers. i am pretty excited about getting my 1176ln back.
is everything working with your macbook pro, uad1 expander, and logic 8? any major hicups?

Not yet, but I want one badly to replace my PCI one...
From the UAD forums, I don't think there have been any particular problems, although some people don't like the fact that you have to restart your computer to plug them in/turn them on, you can't do it on the fly...

  • UAD-1 Card causing hang on start-up

I have 3 UAD-1 Cards installed on my Mac pro, which work fine with logic and DP. However, when I try to open FCP 5 it gives me an error that my UAD-1 cards are not installed properly and FCP hangs. Any thoughts?

First:  is FCP5 supposed to work with this OS?  I know 5.1 and above are ok for Intel, but you're working with a version of fcp that was developed for at least a couple of OS's back.  You might try creating an alternate boot disk without the drivers for the card for working in fcp.  Don't know if it'll work but worth a shot.

  • UAD-2 Solo & Mountain Lion Crashing

I just updated to the new Mountain Lion software and right when I plug in my Universal Audio UAD-2 Solo into the express card slot it crashes. The computer recognizes something is inserted because that Apple equivalent to a Windows blue screen of death (the one with the power logo and error message) appears. What's going on and what do I do?

I'd recommend inserting the Solo Laptop while the computer is turned off, then turning on the Mac.    I realize that this isn't always convenient, but it might get you off the ground until a better solution is found.
You might also want to get the most recent UA release if you haven't already.    The UA installer will happily install it even if the card isn't plugged in.
