My notebook will not charge when plugged in & now will not work at all.  Do you think I need a new battery?

Battery information is found in SYSTEM PROFILER>HARDWARE>POWER.
Sometimes the power adapter does not show the light but is still functioning.  (that often the case with mine)  If on the menu bar the icon shows that it is charging, your ok.  If not, I jiggle the connector or snap it and that restores the connection.  If neither works, make certain the the connectors are clean, both on the adapter and the MBP.  Check to see if any of the posts are bent or missing.
If still no success, try another adapter if available.  If that does not work, the are issues with the MBP.  If it does, a new will be the answer.

was your AC adapter used at the Apple store to demonstrate that your MacBook Pro was charging, or was a different AC adapter used? That is, could the problem be with your AC adapter?

    Error: Bios Battery Replacement Warning
Bought my laptop in January 2012 and now my battery is dead. I know batteries deplete with time but not like what happened to mine. It lasted me 3.5hrs when new but dropped straight to 20-15mins  and after two weeks time it was dead. I started getting startup Bios warnings about the battery needing replacing. I think I got a faulty battery because this is ridiculous.

With adapters there can be odd situations where it would power the notebook but not charge the battery. You may be right, there may not be anything wrong with the adapter, but if you were to call HP Total Care to seek replacement they would have you follow a few steps to narrow things down and make sure its the battery. These steps can be found HERE.
I don't want it to sound like I'm saying it is not the battery, it certainly could be a defective battery and we would be happy to honor the warranty on your unit. If you would like to contact HP Total Care to seek a part replacement for an in-warranty computer you can reach technical support in English at 1-800-474-6836.
The best of luck to you, guggli. I sincerely hope everything works out.

  • Dv9933cl will not charge

I have a dv9933cl entertainment laptop. It will not charge. The battery icon in the system tray says, plugged in not charging. And it does not charge, it's not wrong about that. I have, for other reasons, changed the motherboard twice. I have installed a new dc jack and have purchased a new battery and power pack. I have re-installed the OS, I have upgraded to Windows 7, I have installed dual boot with Linux. Nothing will make this thing charge. I'm out of ideas. Anyone?

  • Battery of Equium series would not charge

    Hi all,
My laptop is having an unusual problem. It doesn't charge, I have changed the charger also but still i m having the same problem.
I dont know what the problem is...so please if anyone have any idea what may be the problem is and its solution than let me know.
I was using the three pin charger and now I have purchased a 2 pin charger.
Does it make any difference ?

    Hi,
which equium do you have? Would be interesting for us, because there are many Equiums out there.
Regarding your problem: you said the notebook does not charge. The charger you mean is this that external thing which must be connected between your notebook and the wall? This is an AC-adapter. :) Just for better understatement.
You mean your AC-adapter wont charge your battery of your notebook. But are you really sure? I mean, it could be that something in your machine is defective. It could be something on the mainboard (which is that very important thing IN your machine) or your battery is malfunctioning.
Maybe it would be better to bring your machine to a technician which is familiar with these machines or contact a local authorized servicepartner to bring them your machine for a hardwarecheckup.
But before contacting someone which will do something with your machine you can try following:
Remove the battery and re-insert it, then try it with both AC-adapters ("chargers"). If it works then check if this happens more than once, otherwise bring your machine to an ASP. By following this link you can find the nearest available servicepartner in your country:

  • HP Pavilion G6 Notebook (laptop) plugged in, not charging.

    Hi,
I bought an HP Pavilion G6 notebook only a couple of months ago, and I have had this problem from the beginning. I have looked at some other forums and it seems like a lot of people have had the same problem with the laptop being plugged in, but not charging.
This problem is really frustrating, as the laptop is plugged in to the power source, and into the laptop, but half the time it isn't even registered as being plugged in. The battery gets drained. Once or twice the battery has fully run out (whilst plugged in) and then been charged to 100% next time it was turned on(???!!!!).
Please tell me if this is some kind of programming or software fault, or if it could be a hardware fault. I have run the battery checker several times and each time it has not found any problems with it. As the laptop sometimes recognises that it is in fact plugged in (but doesn't charge) I personally suspect that it is not a problem with the power adapter.
    PLEASE HELP ME!
    Thanks.
    (Sorry for the long message)

Yes. Just put it back in.
You can do that while the power adapter is plugged in and the notebook is booted into Windows.

  • HP G62-b13SA Notebook - "Plugged in, not charging"

    Hi,
I have an issue with charging my HP HP G62-b13SA Notebook PC (on Windows 7 Home Premium).  I've noticed that when I plug in the adapter, the icon says 'plugged in, not charging'.
However, I notice that sometimes it will charge for between a few seconds to about a minute (when I first connect the charger) with the orange light showing before I get the 'not charging' message and the light turns blue.
I have had the laptop for nearly 3 years and recently had to purchase a replacement battery as the original had gone completely flat.
I've tried running the battery down and  charging it, but no luck and the HP support assistant said the battery is ok
    Thanks,

    Hi @Lewistrick
    Thank you for your query.
I grasp that until a few days ago your battery was working well but now it will not charge. You followed some suggestion in the forum but they did not help.
You ran the battery test and were informed you need to replace this one.  You are concerned that the test may be faulty and that you do not need to replace it.
Here are two documents to help you understand battery life and provides an alternative method to test the battery to ensure the first test was correct.

  • HP 431 NOTEBOOK PC works while plugged in but is not charging ((pluggedin, not charging)

My HP Notebook PC works great while it is plugged in to the AC outlet. The light near the DC power plug on the laptop is lite up as normal. The problem is when I put the cursor near the battery indicator I get the error message "plugged in, not charging". I took the battery out and put it back and nothing changed.  I left my notebook plugged in to the AC outlet overnight(8 hours) and the battery percentage is still at 32 percent.

Is the notebook still in warranty?  Check your warranty status Here.
If you can use the notebook without the battery and the power led lights up, that means that the power adapter is OK.  If you have had the notebook more than one year then chances are that the battery is failing. You can test it by using a bootable Live Linux Ubuntu to see if the battery charges with the other operating system.

  • Notebook not charging, but says it is. Stuck on 0%

    Hello,
I have a weird problem with my notebook. I have an HP elitebook 8570w and previous I had Windows 7 Home Premium running on it. It is arround 15 months old. Since a few days I've updated my notebook with a new 500 GB SSD, wich I've placed in the DVD drive slot. On the SSD I installed Windows 8.1 Pro. Everything is running perfectly, except for the battery.
The problem is that it does not charge the battery. It only works when the notebook is connected to the adapter. However, when the adapter is pluged in, it says it is charging, but it stays at 0%, and the notebook won't turn on without the adapter. And when turned on, and I unplug the adapter, the notebook turns off because it doesn't have power.
Before I installed Windows 8.1 it worked fine.
I searched a lot but couldn't find any similar problem. Does anybody know this problem and has an solution?
    Kinds regards,
    Jelte

You can run a battery check for your notebook to test the status of the battery, which will help isolate the issue if its a hardware issue:
Please follow the instructions mentioned in the following document:

  • Battery charges in one notebook, but not the one I'm using (Pavilion g6-1c45dx)

    Hi everyone,
I'm using an HP Pavilion g6-1c45dx notebook. Windows 7 64-bit.
This morning I went to take my notebook to work with me and noticed that the adapter input had been bent and the battery was not charging. I assumed that the problem was just hardware, and bought an HP Notebook Smart Power Adapter.
If I plug the notebook into the wall with the adapter, with or without the battery in, it works fine, but does not charge. It stays at 9%.
However, if I put the same battery and charger into an older Pavilion (dv5) on which the screen is broken, it charges quickly with no problem. Although the battery check tells me that this (and the older battery from the dv5) need to be replaced, both of them charge perfectly fine on the older computer.
As far as I can tell, there seems to be some problem in between the battery and the adapter that I can't quite get at. I don't understand why it would charge on the othewise completely non-functional notebook but not this one, which is barely a year old. If it were something loose in the power input on the notebook itself, then I don't know why it would run fine on the AC wall current.
I have also tried uninstalling and reinstalling the battery drivers. I'm at my wits' end and really don't want to have to buy a third notebook in as many years. It is functional for now, but I don't want to be tethered to a wall at all times or using a busted old computer for charging purposes.

Since the adapter pin was bent I assume that there could be some kind of short circuite which might have damaged the connection between the battery and the AC adapter.
You informed that the battery test failed on both batteries... so you have tried older battery with this PC, what was the result? and how much charge was there when you ran the test?
Why dont you try a system restore or recovery!!
I can think of this as last option to eliminate any possibilities of software conflict.

  • Battery will not charge. and other issues

Well i'm working on a friend of mines notebook, its a n100 model 0768 12u running windows xp. This is the situation so far. First his hard drive had fried so i replaced that and put the o.s. back on it,but now the battery will not charge. also the wireless network card and dvd drive did not work. I had originally thought that they might have fried as well when the hard drive went down. However I looked through the forums here and found that alot of people solved the battery issue simply by replacing the battery i recommended that. He purchased a replacement battery ( not a genuine lenovo battery, don't know if that makes a difference) and when i put it in the dvd drive and the network card started working no problem. But alas the battery still would not charge. the system runs fine without a battery in it, but if i put the battery in it while its running it turns itself off after about 30 seconds of having the battery in. when the system is powered off and i put the battery in the battery lcd in front blinks 5 times orange then nothing for about 30 seconds then 5 more times. maybe thats a trouble code, don't know, looked all oover the forums and couldn't find anything quite like it. any help would be greatly appreciated.
     thanks
    Steve

    Duck3,
Glad that worked for you!  Thanks for sharing here.
I saw a weird situation on friend's ThinkPad recently - a replacement battery arrived with a 37% charge (not 100% deliberately as somewhere around 40% is the best for shelf life), but it would not accept a charge.   We did a reset by removing the battery & AC and pressing and holding the power button a number of times  (some people say 10 times, some two or three times for a count of 5 or 10).   This drains residual capacitance.
We plugged back in the battery and AC and it began to charge.
Might be worth a try here before he opens it up ....

    Hi sanjoyapple,
Welcome to the Apple Support Communities!
I understand that it can be concerning when your battery is not functioning as you would expect. There are several steps that I would recommend in this situation to troubleshoot. Troubleshooting the MagSafe adaptor and possibly resetting the SMC would be two of these steps. Please read over the attached article for instructions and more information on troubleshooting batteries.
