  • My fan makes loud and very strange noises.

    Hi again,
My fan makes loud and very strange noises. Is there any cure for that?
    Thank you!
    Markus

Hmm... that is strange. There are a couple reasons that I can think of.
First, go to System Preferences -> Energy Saver -> Processor Performance. See what its set to. If it is currently set to Highest, your fan could be going more often. Turn it down to Reduced or Automatic. Note if there is any difference.
Secondly, are you all up to date on software updates? The last step was to see if it was a software issue. If it isn't, then you probably have a defective fan. AppleCare?
Now, you would open your PowerBook. Look in the Apple docs (Support - Manuals) to find how to do it for yourself, or take it to a shop or Apple Store and have them do it. Safest option.
Look at your fan. Has it come free of the anchor and is hitting against the wall or fan surround?
Lastly, try keeping the PowerBook in a open, ventilated area. The fan will power up less if the computer stays cooler. For a possibly irritating but possibly helpful option, purchase a product that lifts the PowerBook off your lap or desk. I think Rain Design makes a good one.
    Good luck!

  • Album and artist title larger than other album titles?

When viewing my music through grid view and sorting by albums one of the titles for one of my albums have a larger font size than any of the other in my library. It's not the selected or the currently played album. It's the first of a few albums of the same artist, but its only with this particular artist that this occurs. I've compared the "get info" tags on this album do the other by the same artist and they all seem to be the same. I have no idea why this is happening. I've tried the usual, restart, changing thumbnail size, tried different viewing modes etc etc.
Anyone have any idea why this is?

Hi David and Welcome to Apple Discussions ...
Quit iTunes. This might be a corrupted iTunes preference file... locate this file: com.apple.iTunes.plist
/Users/YourName/Library/Preferences. Drag that file from the Preferences folder to your Desktop. Launch iTunes, and look at that one album title and see if it's the correct font size. if it is, drag that .plist file to the Trash, empty the Trash and reboot.
Post back if you need more help.

  • Macbook Pro making loud and weird noise

Okay, so I was just watching some videos on youtube and I fell asleep. Even the battery drained to zero% and hibernated. Then after around 7 hours when I woke up, and turned it on again then it started to make really weird noise from inside like hmmm I couldnt figure what was the problem, either the speakers? Fan? Hard-disk? Superdrive?
Then I turned it off and turned on again. It was quiet for a moment until the log in window appeared and started to making same noise again. Then I cleared PVRAM or something holding down Command+Option+P+R and Power Button then it is kinda fine now but still loud enough to bother people.
It seems like some wire or hmm something is stuck inside some moving part inside it but I am not sure. I just keep my Macbook Pro on the table all the time as a desktop I have never had such problem before.
Help please? What do I need to do? It's a

You said at the start that the battery discharged completely...did you plug the MBP in and recharge?  Does the MagSafe show it is charging or running on AC?
Does the noise sound lik a clicking, sound the hard drive stepping motor makes?  Or is it more of a hum, or a grating sound?  If the latter it could be a fault with a fan or a bad bearing in the hard drive.
    How does it perform otherwise?
Might be a good candidate for a visit to the Apple genius bar and have the techs run some diagnostics.

  • Headphones making ringing and wavy static noise only in windows.

I have my mac quad booted between 10.5, 10.6, win7 and ubuntu. Under 10.5, 10.6 and ubuntu, the sound works flawlessly. however, under windows 7, whenever there isn't any sound playing, or there is low-volume sound, the headphones will make chirping ringing, and static noises. They appear to be in a pattern, one that changes depending on the last system-sound played (i.e back button in windows explorer, or ventrilio talk sound...) or while changing volume. This issue has occurred with bootcamp drivers 2.0, 3.0 or 3.1, or generic realtek drivers, under Windows 7. (both the beta and final ultimate versions [fully updated]) Windows 7 has been re-installed multiple times, and these sounds have been confirmed to happen before any software other than drivers are installed.
I can't seem to find any solution that fixes these sounds. I know that it isn't hardware related because my other 3 OSs do not make this noise. Any help would be much appreciated.

Yes, you'll want to repost your question in one of the forums listed at the top of this category page:

    Sorry about the misunderstanding.

  • Why did my iMac wired keyboard keys 4, 5, 6 (number pad), +, and up-arrow, (right)shift keys suddenly stopped working?

I have already tried restarting my computer and keys will just not work and I have seen many other people have EXACTLY same problem with EXACTLY same keys as I do, but I have found any answer.
    Currently I have Mac OS X 10.8.5

You have noticed they are all in a row.   This normally happens where a spillage has taken place.   Has the keyboard had liquid contact?

  • Getting ms word and more memory for iBook

I just got a used iBook 10.4. It doesn't have ms word. The problem is, it only has 640 MB capacity and i'm worried that getting word will take up too much space. Are there any tricks to expanding the memory? and does anyone have any idea how much more memory i'll be able to get from a mac store?

Memory on a Mac is a combination of RAM chips and 'virtual memory' on your hard drive. You need space in both.
Heat was a problem with some iBooks, but if your's is still running, it's likely OK. Your computer can be fit with 1.12 to 1.5 GB of chip memory, and more disk memory than it needs. If Apple no longer carries your memory type, consider a quality online fix-it shop, or do it yourself. (Buy a book and learn about your Mac.)
    Also, consider the free NeoOffice,
NeoOffice (look around for PPC variety)
    http://www.macupdate.com/info.php/id/15797/neooffice
It's a complete office suite; and Microsoft XML format (for Word) was supposed to be called OpenOffice XML format. NeoOffice is a smaller and more reliable version of OpenOffice.org. (Watch for the .org: it's the free one.)

    rajlego,
in the Keyboard pane of System Preferences, select the Shortcuts tab, and then select Mission Control on the left-hand side. On the right-hand side, make sure that the Mission Control checkbox is checked, double-click on its current key combination (by default “^↑”) so that the key combination is highlighted, and then press the F3 button — that will set its shortcut to be F3. You can now press F3 to bring up Mission Control without needing to also press the Fn button.

  • I have a macbook (circa 2008) version mac os x10.6.8. The 'l' key on my keyboard is hard to press down and doesn't always come up on the screen.

I've never had a problem with any of the keys on my keyboard up until now. The 'l' key has become like hard and I have to press down harder and more deliberately then I normally do. Otherwise an 'l' doesn't show up on the screen. It's not a settings or technical problem. I feel like just needs to be cleaned or something like that but I don't know. It's really frustrating whenever I'm typing especially since 'l' is a pretty common letter. Please help!

You can try this but I'm not sure if it will work http://m.wikihow.com/Temporarily-Remove-a-Key-from-a-Macbook
ALso found this video on YouTube https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kh88cn_rtLo
The keyboard, trackpad and top case are an integral unit, you'll probably have to replace the top case https://www.ifixit.com/Guide/MacBook+Core+2+Duo+Upper+Case+Replacement/515

  • I have an older macbook pro and the hard drive is starting to go (making loud noises). i tried to back up to an external hard drive (my passport essential se) using time machine and the computer keeps shutting down. suggestions to complete backup please?

I have an older macbook pro and the hard drive is starting to go (making loud noises). i tried to back up to an external hard drive (my passport essential se) using time machine and the computer keeps shutting down. the same thing happens when just trying to save my pictures from iphoto to a flash drive. suggestions to complete backup please?

Sounds like you'll need to access that drive while it is not booted. You need to replace it anyway, so do that, then one way or another (ext enclusure, et), access it and copy files.
If you keep trying to boot it, you might kill it for good and not get your files, so just swap it out first.

  • Macbook pro 15" mid 2010 i spilled water on keyboard now it wont power on if the battery is connected and the keys on keyboard doesnt work it works fine with no battery and external keyboard if i order a battery and new keyboard will every else work again

macbook pro 15" mid 2010 i spilled water on keyboard now it wont power on if the battery is connected and the keys on keyboard doesnt work it works fine with no battery and external keyboard if i order a battery and new keyboard will every else work again lik it did before

If you have records that show that you've taken your MacBook Pro in for a year to fix the machine, I would escalate the problem to Apple Customer Relations - unfortunately I don't have a number for Spain.
It would only seem logical to me that if you've been trying to have the machine repaired during the time that the 'recall' was in effect that you should be eligible for a new logic board. But only customer relations will be able to make that call.
Good luck - take the issue as high up the food chain as you can and see what happens.

  • Hi! i recently got a macbook pro 15" retina display, and i tried to play assassin's creed 2 and other games on it, but the thing is, the keyboard keys will not respond except the trackpad, and the keyboard keys work fine outside of gaming.

Hi! so like i said in the title, i tried to play any game like assassin's creed and minecraft, but the keyboard wont respond but the trackpad does, also i tried restarting reinstalling checking if mouse key is on or off and all that, and it still wont fix this problem.  Outside of gaming though, the keyboard works with no problem. Please help me!

You should also ask this in the MacBook Pro forum. This is the forum for the 13” white and black plastic MacBooks that were discontinued in 2010. You should also post this question there to increase your chances of getting an answer.

Sounds like it could be a hardware problem.
Try a restart or reset to see if that helps. If not, contact Apple Support.
Restart: Press On/Off button until the Slide to Power Off slider appears, select Slide to Power Off and, after It shuts down, press the On/Off button until the Apple logo appears.
Reset: Press the Home and On/Off buttons at the same time and hold them until the Apple logo appears (about 10 seconds).
    No data will be lost.
