Gadgets / widgets on Arch 64 / Gnome 3

Hi,
I've been trying to get some igoogle gadgets displayed on my gnome desktop and am hitting issues no matter which approach I try.
both kind of seem network related, which is daft because my network connection is fine.
with google gadets, it installs and runs fine, the default RSS feed works fine and updates however any other google gadgets such as email, task fail to display properly, showing only "Information is temporaily unavailable"
The other approach was screenlets, which seems to install ok and the built in gadgets work, however any google gadgets fail with message "Internet connection required to run this gadget."
If I run from terminal I get the following output:
$ screenlets-manager
cat: /etc/screenlets/prefix: No such file or directory
** (process:1203): WARNING **: Trying to register gtype 'GMountMountFlags' as enum when in fact it is of type 'GFlags'

Can anyone help with this issue?

  • Software package list for best experience of Arch with Gnome DE.

I have been a long time Ubuntu user but due to power regression issues have to stop using it on new laptop (Thinkpad T420). Arch linux is the obvious choice to try and i did try it this weekend. I like the base and i think i might stay with it. I seems to have far better battery life without any tweaking - low temperature, no fan no TLP no kernel issues so far. I am having problem setting up Arch linux because of its stripped down nature. I guess i will have to read a lot to make it work me.
My question is i might not be having best experience of Arch with gnome. Is their a list or meta package like ubuntu-desktop which will install all/most of the commonly used programs and settings and from their i can customize it? Or is tweaking done in bits and pieces in Arch?
    Thanks.

There is no meta-package like ubuntu-desktop in Arch. You have to build your system the way you find it most comfortable.

  • [SOLVED] All applications lost in Arch Linux Gnome.

All installed softwares are not accessible even through terminal
I am not sure where I made the mistake. But the Gnome application menue was empty in my system. I was installing cairo dock when this happened.
I added the following lines in /etc/pacman.conf
    [archlinuxfr]
    Server = http://repo.archlinux.fr/$arch/
    and run
    $ sudo pacman -Syy yaourt
This made some error saying some signature issue. And roll backed the installation.
When I restarted my system I was in the shell not in Gnome. I installed gnome again by using pacman. It did not download the packages again from the repo, but installed it.
Now I can open gnome but all installed softwares are not accessible even through terminal

I'm curious. Is the filesystem on the USB, ntfs ?
If yes, did you install NTFS-3G ? https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/NTFS-3G. Happened to me 8 days ago .
EDIT - Sorry for the repost using the same solution as my above post. Didn't see his link. Just surfed through the posts for the word "NTFS-3g" and it wasn't there.

  • [SOLVED] Totem missing settings on 64 Arch with Gnome 3.6

    Hi all,
after clean install Arch 64 with Gnome 3.6.2 I cant find settings in default video player Totem to set my subtitles encoding (East Europe - Windows 1250).
Can anybody tell me, how or where can I set subtitles encoding in new version of Totem?
    Thank you!

  • [solved] Arch with GNOME 2?

    Hi everyone,
I'm a new Arch user, have been using Ubuntu for about two years now and decided this morning to give Arch a try; the install wasn't too bad, the only ultimate problem was GNOME 3... I'm hoping somebody here can tell me if there's a way to install Arch from scratch with GNOME 2 and Compiz instead of GNOME 3? I ended up removing G3 and I'm now using KDE, which is also not what I want, but certainly a million times better than G3.
I had a quick look around, and it's clear that I'm not the only one who hates G3, the old threads on this forum regarding a downgrade are pointing to a lot of empty links, hence my new thread on the matter.
I understand that it's faster to use G3 and so-on, but really it looks like it was built for people who haven't got a clue how to use a PC, and if I wanted that sort of "simplicity" then I would have brought a Mac. I absolutely DESPISE GNOME 3 and I'm really sorry if that has offended anyone.
All I want is the simple, minimal interface that I had with G2, with the cute little foot in the top left corner, my customised menus and the basic window effects; that's it. I don't want Duplo-sized icons, I don't want fancy effects and I don't want the 0.0001 seconds of speed difference or extra security and reliability, because I'd rather my PC burst into flames from some G2 bug than I ever use G3 to do my computing.

    That's hilarious! lol.
G3 is actually pretty good. If you don't like gnome-shell - then simply don't use it.  Compiz works really well in G3 ( i am using the latest version 0.9.5, compiled yesterday from source).  you can customize gnome3 menus, much in the same way as Gnome2.  However, the menus are fairly slow, when i compare them to my gtk2-menu - which had zero-delay in opening.  I've actually removed gnome-panel and replaced it with other tools, as i found gnome-panel to be a bit lame in G3.....you may not mind it though.
anyways,  I wouldn't be too worried about running G3 - a lot of people are in a scramble because they aren't interested in the shell. but the shell isn't a requirement. I think the developers would just prefer that everybody uses GS. while there was talk of not having it supported in the future, i doubt that will happen ~ as we all know Canonical will be porting Unity to run on top of the gnome 3 stack. (right now it uses gnome2).  So i tend to think we should be able to run fallback, for a long time
it just might take some extra-tweaking, to get it the way you want your desktop to be. I'm now actually liking it better than gnome2, myself.  but it did take a bit of adjustment, but "under the hood" - gnome 3 has some nice features and improvements ove G2...
theming isn't too difficult either - so if you don't like fat menus/giant icons... then, you can use a theme that doesn't have that - or edit your theme instead. (i sort of did both). I'm actually working on a nice dark theme, that has gtk2 style window-decorations (narrow/thin), slim menus and some other goodies. Gtk3 - looks really great too!

  • How is GNOME in Arch?

I now definitely prefer GNOME, so I've been sticking with GNOME distros (Foresight wouldn't install, so Ubuntu) but I really enjoy using Arch. Most of my problems in the past were just KDE-related frustrations and had little to do with GNOME itself.
Now I've always been under the impression that Arch favors KDE to GNOME, but am I wrong about this? Is GNOME well-supported, well-maintained, and in general a smooth experience in Arch?

Did you not think to try another window manager?
ArchPad wrote:Now I've always been under the impression that Arch favors KDE to GNOME, but am I wrong about this? Is GNOME well-supported, well-maintained, and in general a smooth experience in Arch?
Gnome in arch is "vanilla", its un patched with themes and artwork, whereas in ubuntu/foresight gnome is modified/themed by the maintainers, in arch you get "pure" gnome.
ArchPad wrote:What about gstreamer support? Adding non-free codecs is a cinch with xine, but not so with gstreamer. Do the gstreamer packages follow the same naming conventions as in Ubuntu? Is it possibly easier to get the required codecs up and running?
    Easily all installed via..
    pacman -Sy gstreamer0.10-plugins
That will install them all, then just need totem-xine.
As far as arch users desktop choices go, allot of people in the Arch community like Openbox / dwm / E17

  • Cannot start gnome 3

i have installed arch and gnome3 on my laptop, but i found that i cannot enter it. if i execute gdm with a normal user(IOW not root), i will get some warnings and nothing else will happen, but if i execute gdm with root, i will see the login screen, after entering password for a normal user(not root), i found the mouse is constantly busy, and i can also find nothing but the mouse.

You're not supposed to execute gdm as a user, it's meant to be started as a serverce on your system before you login. It's a means by which you login.
You need to edit your /etc/initab for gdm to work. https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Di … tab_method
If you don't want a graphical boot and want to start gnome after loging in, see startx. https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Startx

  • HOWTO: Install Arch for Newbies

    Hello,
Yesterday was my fist installation of Arch and i've found that the informations are not very well combined for a newbie/new to arch, am not newbie to linux but am new to arch so i've spend quite time to figure out some things or to know some links, due to this fact i've decided to write an easy guide that combine the whole installation from Downloading Till getting an up & running Arch with Gnome
the HOWTO can be found here please i need your opinions/corrections so we can make it as easy as installing ubuntu for newbies

Try my gdm.conf, it's an unchanged one, and normally it would work
    # GDM Configuration file. You can use gdmsetup program to graphically
    # edit this, or you can optionally just edit this file by hand. Note that
    # gdmsetup does not tweak every option here, just the ones most users
    # would care about. Rest is for special setups and distro specific
    # tweaks. If you edit this file, you should send the HUP or USR1 signal to
    # the daemon so that it restarts: (Assuming you have not changed PidFile)
    # kill -USR1 `cat /var/run/gdm.pid`
    # (HUP will make gdm restart immediately while USR1 will make gdm not kill
    # existing sessions and will only restart gdm after all users log out)
    # You can also use the gdm-restart and gdm-safe-restart scripts which just
    # do the above for you.
    # For full reference documentation see the gnome help browser under
    # GNOME|System category. You can also find the docs in HTML form on
    # http://www.gnome.org/projects/gdm/
    # NOTE: Some of these are commented out but still show their default values.
    # If you wish to change them you must remove the '#' from the beginning of
    # the line. The commented out lines are lines where the default might
    # change in the future, so set them one way or another if you feel
    # strongly about it.
    # Have fun! - George

  • Problem with Gnome and D-Bus

Hi to all, i have a problem with Gnome and D-Bus
    Versions:
    Arch Release: 0.7.2 Testing
    Gnome:   2.14.1-2
    D-Bus: 0.61-3
    Screenshot explain all:
    [URL=http://img366.imageshack.us/my.php?image=gpwned6be.jpg][/URL]

1>then i can't promote garnome on this forum??
yeah you can, but not as a solution to gnome related problem in arch. cause this doesn't resolve anything.
2>You don't have to, garnome2.14.2.1(481kb) download the patches and patch it automatically, just change install dir to /usr
(ONLY if you are using console-linux who want gnome a try). of course there is need small arch related patch.(in my experience 0)
eh, i haven't got a clue what this means, putting patches upstream means they will get include in gargnome and upstream releases. i only tried to say we put a lot of our free time in gnome for arch.
2-1>Well said, so choice is the each one's freedom.
and this category isn't arch, this is Desktop Environments,
i installed arch, BUT THAT DOESN'T MEANS I SHOULD USE gnome FROM ARCH!!!
agreed, but again then we won't support your desktop.
    ARCH != gnome

ah bugs.archlinux.org so it can be fixed.

  • Problem with Notifications (Gnome 3.4.1)

    Hey guys.
I just installed Arch with Gnome 3.4.1, and everything works fine. I just had two issues. The first one, was the Date/Time, and that i solved by reading another thread here.
The second problem is what i'm worried about...
The default behavior for notifications is to show the notification bar for some seconds, and then hide it, right? Then, if there's more notifications of that same program, put a counter on it.
The thing is, i have no such behavior. The bar don't show, and the notification counter do not work. I use Empathy, and when i receive more than one message, the notification counter doesn't appear, and i think, because of that, some extensions that use notifications counters don't work at all.
Not sure if i was clear, let me know if you need more details. I have vanilla Gnome Shell Theme, Icons and all the extensions are disabled. Everything was installed with 'pacman -S gnome gnome-extra'
Can you guys give me some light on this? Is it a upstream bug? Ubuntu with shell 3.4.1 seemed to work fine, but i really want to use Arch....
    Thanks in advance.

    m79reed wrote:
    @jakobcreutzfeldt,
Try install this extension: https://extensions.gnome.org/extension/ … -notifier/. It's much easier to see how counters is working with that one.
    And now...
Counters is not working for me:
    1) contacts that have already a chat WINDOW opened (chat window is not active)
    2) contact that chat TAB is active (chat window is not active).
Red notification icon blinks only fast and gone - like something marks it as readed.
For any other contacts (someone send a message to you first [no opened chat window with that contact] OR TAB is non-active) notification counters is working fine.
I will try to add a new account and test on it. Mayby something is wrong with old configuraction files from gnome-shell 3.2...
    [edit]
OK, i've tested with fresh account and problem exists and sound notification works only for contacts sending a new message.
    [edit2]
Just discovered that notification counters is not working when use -a option for notify-send command. Any other options works fine. Ex.:
    notify-send -a empathy -i empathy test1 test2 - counter is not working
    notify-send -i empathy test1 test2 - counter is working fine
This is my problem exatly. Still not able to figure this out.
No, it's not a problem with extension. Counter notifications is not working without it too.
    @jakobcreutzfeldt,
    Can you paste yours:
    pacman -Qs notification
    output?
    This is mine:
    pacman -Qs notification
    local/libevent 2.0.18-1
    An event notification library
    local/libnotify 0.7.5-1
    Desktop notification library
    local/notification-daemon 0.7.4-1 (gnome)
Notification daemon for the desktop notifications framework
    local/startup-notification 0.12-2

  • [Solved] Installing Gnome

I've got Arch x86 running in the latest VirtualBox to limit the damage caused by my noobness.
I'm stuck with installing gnome. Specifically the step where gnome-session is called. I've not done the exec steps after that.
    As a normal user:
gnome-session results in "WARNING **: Cannot open display"
startx results in "module vboxvideo not found"
    As root:
gnome-session results in "WARNING **: Cannot open display"
    startx launches X correctly
If I then run gnome-session from within X then it gives me some kind of hybrid interface. (See screenshot below)
As I understand the GNOME Arch wiki gnome-session should launch straight into gnome, regardless of user type. So how do I get rid of the vboxvideo not found? Please also explain what that hybrid interface is. Is it supposed to be like that?
Edit: Also, why does the behaviour differ between root & normal user?
The VBox guest additions appear to have installed correctly.
    xorg.conf is over here: http://pastebin.com/hHSCF4M8

Apologies. I've read the rules cover-to-cover now. Could you perhaps also add a reference to these quantitative rules here, so that others won't repeat my mistake.

Mount up guest additions iso and then run it [x86]
    Also try
    /etc/rc.d/gdm start
Once you know gnome is working add it too rc.conf daemons
Mr Green for president! That starts Gnome correctly when launched from root.
Also added gdm to the daemons section of /etc/rc.conf as you suggested and now it boots straight into gdm/gnome. Awesome.
