Any ideas on what could be causing this?

  • Macbook Pro w/Retina: Processors nearing 100ºC?!

As part of my school's technology requirements, I purchased a Macbook Pro recently. It is the 2012 Retina Display model. All in all, it's a great computer, and most of the time, it runs quite cool or a little warm.
However, when I stress the computer with any kind of 3D game, things quickly spiral out of control. As shown by numerous third-party temp. sensor readout applications, my processor can quickly get to temperatures just under or at 100º Celcius (and the dedicated nVidia card gets 80-90, too)! The radiation coming through the keyboard is so hot, I can barely keep my hands on it for fear of burning myself. Now, I know that laptops "get hot," but this is a little absurd. I've not seen anyone yet who's reported temperatures this high.
Admittedly, I've not been a laptop user my entire life. I prefer desktops for their stability and power. But again, this was a requirement by my school. And in addition, I'm entering into a program in game design, which means "not playing games" on this computer is really not an option. But, neither is running my computer at temperatures like this. I am going to do serious damage to the internals, or my hands.
And for the record, I do not use my "lap" top on my lap. It's planted firmly on my desk.
Apple has had mixed reactions to my prediciment: The Security sector that I found myself connected to when I called them through Express Lane was very concerned about the operating temperature of my computer, which makes sense. But then they contacted the engineering team, who insisted that the computer "was running well within acceptable limits." I contacted my local Genius Bar, and they seemed shocked at the operating temperatures of my computer as well. So they grabbed it from me and ran stress tests on it for two days, only to inform me that the computer passed all of them. They were not able to tell me the exact numbers associated with those results, as their tests only output "pass/fail."
Research I have done on this processor indicate that third-generation i7's operate "between 5-105ºC." Running just 5º below what I presume to be the failure point is incredibly shocking. Other research catered to this specific computer indicates that Apple's manufacturing process applies disgustingly large amounts of thermal paste to their processor and discrete graphics cards, but when I questioned the geniuses over at Apple, they said that this amount was gagued for each computer model, and they were not allowed to apply any other quantity.
So, I'm looking for a solution to my heat problem. I can't change computers -- it's a college requirement. I will not manually reapply the thermal paste to my computer -- it's brand new, and I'm not going to void the valuable warranty I purchased. I can't just do nothing -- these temperatures are NOT good, no matter what Apple says. Boiling water with my CPU is bad!
Cooling pads have been what I've been looking at primarily, but I can never seem to find one that does what I need it to do: 10-20 degrees of active cooling. The model I purchased recently, the Cooler Master Infinite Evo, was horribly ineffective. Every model I look at has some glaring problem or a swarm of angry customers who are venting about some faulty part or a product that just "doesn't move air."
And I need something that moves air. A LOT of it.

Thanks for the response. I appologize personally -- part of the research I did (I've been working on this problem for weeks!) led me to this issue: a lot of people finding that they have processes eating up their CPU. I updated my Macbook Pro the moment it was powered on, and it does not suffer from this issue.
When I run these 3D games that have been heating up my computer, the CPU read shows no more than 15% of total CPU power at any give time, despite the processors heating up to an ungodly 100ºC per core.
Incidentally, the CPU usage numbers change when viewing "All Processes." I'm not exactly sure how they're scaled in this setting, but the game in question displays about 70% CPU when viewed this way. It is NOT, however, using 70% of my total processor capacity.

  • CF8 cfdocument tag has a few new bugs

This discusses two new bugs in CF8 having to do with footers
    in cfdocument.
    ***FIRST BUG***
With CFMX7, I could define a new footer by putting a new
<cfdocumentitem type="footer"> tag in each cfdocumentsection
of my pdf report. Each could have a different string, e.g., so that
the footer could tell the reader which chapter she is reading. This
does not work in CF8. The chapter name that appears on all pages is
the one defined in the last <cfdocumentitem type="footer">
tag in the cfdocument. Now only the page number changes
    dynamically. Sample code:
    <cfdocument format="pdf" unit="in" pagetype="letter"
    marginbottom="0.8" marginleft="1" marginright="1"
    margintop="0.8"
    orientation="portrait" fontembed="yes" overwrite="yes"
    filename="pdfbugdemo2.pdf" pageheight="11" pagewidth="8.5"
    scale="100">
    <cfdocumentsection>
    <cfset footerContent="1. Introduction">

    *** SECOND BUG ***
In CF8, you cannot cfinclude the same template multiple times
in a given template - you get an error (at least sometimes). A
workaround is to make multiple copies of the template, each with a
different name. This was not necessary in CFMX7. Sample code:
    <cfdocument format="pdf" unit="in" pagetype="letter"
    marginbottom="0.8" marginleft="1" marginright="1"
    margintop="0.8"
    orientation="portrait" fontembed="yes" overwrite="yes"

re: If you claim didn't say that,
No "if" about it - I made no such claim and never would -
    thats just you
talking gibberish. Who in their right mind would say, or even
    suggest, that
forums are not helpful. The only reason a forum exists in the
    first place is
    to be helpful!
re: So what was your actual intention in the first place?
Not sure you would undertsand, you seem to struggle to follow
    along. But
just a hint for you - the forum posts, or quantity thereof,
    have been used
by several people here, and by editors at sites such as
    sitepoint.com, as a
metric to use to gague interest and activity. A metric only
    useful when
taken in context with other pointers (job market, book
    market, number of
classes still running, so on and so forth)
Again, nobody has ever said forums are not useful or helpful
    - I suspect you
knew that much but felt the need to throw some nonsense about
    in an attempt
at an argument - failed didn't it?
RE: Maybe they realized Ben Forta writes such a good books,
    they felt
    ashamed? :-)
The O'Reilly audience is typically seasoned developers, hard
    core coders.
Their books are a tough read for beginners and O'Reilly
    delibertately do not
cater to this audeince with many of their titles. And to put
    it bluntly, the
main bunch of people to ditch CF early on were these "hard
    core" types. I
belive this as the only CF developers I know are actually
    more "designers"
than developers - I know of no professional coder/developers
    that would
touch CF. Thats just my personal observation, btw.
re: From what I read, people are telling I'm right.
Are you crazy? They are all, at least 95%, in agreemenst that
    Tim Buntel
needs to pick up the marketing act before CF dies. Seriously,
    you do seem to
struggle to follow along at times - suggest you actually
    read.
re: CF has always been "dead" in many places.
How can you always be dead, doesn't make sense! You have to
    have lived in
order to die. There used to be hundreds of cf jobs advertised
    here in
Australia every day, literally every day. Now you may see 3
    or 4 each week -
mostly for migrating old cf sites to new asp.net or java
    sites. And there is
no longer any CF classes advetised or held in nearly all
    states - they
literally shut them down. I'm confident enough that the
    comment "CF is dead"
    is accurate.
r: Maybe you should be answering those questions, since you
    seem to know
they're true, and I haven't heard of any such things.
I know the answers to all of those questions - becuase CF is
    dying. If CF
were living, then none of those questions would have been
    asked.
re: So you know they're not investing in one?
Yes, I know that. They will never spend that kind fo money on
    coldfusion -
it just wouldn't be vaible for them. We're darned lucky that
    still have
small team of enginners to write tags around the java
    libraries and release
new versions. They are not actually going to start
    "innovating" with CF in a
market like this - and I don't blame them.

  • My iPhone 4s always reads 100% Battery and then crashes

    Help!
My iPhone 4s is completely up to date, I have done a complete reset, and a hard reset... multiple times.  My battery gague won't waver from 100%, and then it crashes.  When I try to charge it, it gives me the "plug in" picture, indicating that it is fully charged when it crashed seconds ago.  What else can I try?

The best bet there would be to maybe try to wipe the phone and then reset it from a back up in iCloud or iTunes. If that does not work you should take the phone to the apple store and they will, if you are still in warrenty, replace it right there.

  • Audio Dropouts on Panasonic AJ-D455's

Are there any of us besides me using a Panasonic AJ-D455 DVCPro VCR who have encountered intermittent audio dropouts when recording to tape?
My problem only shows up when my material is played back on either a 1st generation Panasonic DVCPro deck (e.g. AJ-D450) or a DVCAM deck. In other words, I can record to tape and play back on my own unit and not hear this problem, but other users with different playback capability report audio dropout.
For the record, I'm connected to the VCR via FireWire, and the deck obviously has Panasonic's 1394 DIF adapter installed. I'm not using any kind of A/V breakout system that converts D-A.
Furthermore, Panasonic is aware of my situation and is currently working with me; their response has been excellent.
Whomever can shed any beneficial light on this situation is automatically qualified for a drink on me upon your next visit to Toledo, Ohio. For those of you old enough to remember MA*SH, yes, there really is a Tony Paco's, and we'll go there, if you want!

Thanks for the welcome, but no, it's not dirty heads. Actually, my AJ-D455 went to a warranty center in Farmington Hills, MI., and had literally every component and boardset swapped with an identical machine, including the head drum assembly, and still produced the same problem.
I'm currently trying to isolate variables in my studio that may be causing this.
The main question I have to the group is how many of us besides me are using an AJ-D455 with 1394 interface? My assumption is that most studios that have this particular Panasonic deck are using Avids, or some other digital I/O box and are interfacing video and audio via SDI and AES/EBU. Maybe I shouldn't be assuming this, but I'm trying to gague how many other studios are using this particular model with Panasonic's 1394 card.
    Has anyone else experienced this?
    Thanks again.

  • Voiceover Compression

    Hi,
What would be a simple way to add compression to voiceover done using the voiceover tool in FCP 5? Possible to do within FCP, or would I need to use Soundtrack Pro? I’ve been told it’s a good idea to add compression to get that “voiceover” sound. What compression ratio should I use? Any info much appreciated.
    Thanks,
    Alexander

Hi. Although I personally do this in ProTools, but you can definitely do audio compression in FCP with the compression audio filter. My suggestion is to experiment with the audio track and determin how much compression sounds natural. That's not a very technical answer but my experience is that you'll need to gague this against the music bed/track.

  • Connection Error - Phone, SIM or Network? - am rea...

    Hello,
For the past week I have been having the odd problem with when trying to make a call, or sometimes recieving a call (when in a full signal area my phone not ringing at all). Usually when I make the call what happens is I get the "Connection Error" message appear, sometimes as well during a call this comes up.
Now like I said this was happening for a week (maybe a little bit longer), it was occasionaly though so didn't casue too much of a problem. I have however just changed my handset for a SIM-free N85 and the problem got a whole lot worse so I contacted T-Mobile who were very helpful in checking it out, initially their response was handset issue but as it was happening on my old handset as well I managed to get them to change the SIM.
Well the calls I make now are going through ok, so far not one connection error but I am still getting the drop outs during the calls but not all the time. I have bene ont he phone for 30 mins without an issue, then a drop out after 10 mins on a different call, then maybe a call for 25 mins before a drop out.
Personally I think this is sounding like a network issue more than a handset. The new SIM has helped and the last one did get transfered betwee phones several times over the space of 2 1/2 years so a bad connection would not supprise me.
The next thought is that it could be the handset but this seems really unlikely as it was affecting my old N95 as well. Is anybody aware of any issues with the N85 having connection problems? (I know there is the N-Gague one from a search of the forum).
I am basically looking for some opinions as I am quite stumped, having to change the phone although not impossible will only happen if it is deemed to be a handset fault. I am not sure that it is but a new SIM and T-Mobile saying the network is ok is ruling out the list of things it could be. But then the fact that it affected my old handset as well would imply that it is more network related.
As far as the network I have had this problem in a wide area, not just at home. In areas that are 15 miles upto 60 miles away from where I live.
Any suggestions of what else to try would be greatly appreciated.

I was JUST checking that.  It was in fact unchecked.  I started messing around with it, I checked it and set the limit to 50GB and the warning to 25GB and I was able to turn the hotspot back on. (Not that I'd hit the limit of 50GB) I wonder if that setting is left unchecked, that there is a preset limit configured to it that can't be changed?
OH, and it's a DROID4 phone, I picked the wrong phone when posting the question.

  • New to Gaming

    Hi,
I'm new to gaming and just bought my first gaming system (xbox 360).  Any female senior citizens out there that could recommend a beginners RPG that women would like?  I don't want a shoot em up, killing game.  I like fantasy and Greek mythology.
    Solved!
    Go to Solution.

    Hi yonana,
Welcome to the forums!  I just want you to know that I took your post as a personal challenge to come up with some games that met your description.    Here's what I found:
The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim - This game can get as in-depth as you want it.  It offers deep character customization and diverse experience from player to player.  It is set in an expansive and beautiful land called Skryim, which is being plagued by Dragons.  Although the main plot involves war and thus, killing, you can play the game for hours on end without harming a soul.  This is one of the richest fantasy role-playing experiences out there.
Skylanders - Although this game may seem childish (it involves placing physical figurines on a "portal"), it actually offers a fun and rewarding gaming experience for all ages.  I got into it because my son loves it but I play it with him all of the time.  It has RPG-style character progression, a fantasy plot, and lots of quirky humor.
Fable II & III - I've actually only played the first Fable title but I very much enjoyed it. Another fantasy series and fairly linear in the plot progression so not too complex as far as knowing what to do next.  If I'm not mistaken, this was one of the first games to institute a "morality gague".  Meaning, your choices determined if your character was light or dark.  I'm sure the rest of series, Fable II & III followed suit.
Sacred 2: Fallen Angel - Although I don't have first-hand experience with this game, I have heard good things.  The BestBuy.com description of the game says it "...whisks you away to an immense, seamless world filled with danger and opportunity. In this stunning action RPG, you'll assume the role of one of six playable characters, each with a distinct look, capabilities and motivation. Decide to play as either the Light or Shadow side and prepare yourself for the risks and rewards that come with your chosen path. Charge into battle atop a variety of mounts, and hone your battle skills as you make choices within the game.
Dragon Age & Dragon Age II - Bioware, the developer, makes my personal favorite style of RPG.  They also created the Mass Effect series, which is worth checking out but more of a sci-fi genre RPG.  These games track your decisions and the choices you make determine the outcome of other events.  Bioware's games always seem to rake in the awards.  Excellent story telling as well.
Final Fantasy - I would get flak from the community if I didn't mention Final Fantasy in the RPG genre. Square-Enix, the developer, is really one of the pioneers of the genre and these games offer incredibly deep store-telling, years of experience, more fantasy than you ever thought you wanted and stats galore. The development team is in Japan and the style very much reflects that in the artwork, dialogue, and over-the-top features (eyes, hair, swords bigger than your body) Final Fantasy is to RPGs what Super Mario is to Platformers.  I personally favor the earlier installments of Final Fantasy (FFIX and prior) but that's just me.
Civilization Revolution - This is more of a strategy game than RPG but it will suck you in just the same. I'm listing it here because it pulls from a lot of different historic elements that you might be interested in.  You basically build a civilization from the ground up starting in ancient times and progressing towards the present. Each game can be won by best the other civilizations in conquest, diplomacy, economy, culture, or technology. Super fun and addicting.
I hope that helps!  Let me know if you have any questions or would like other suggestions because that was really fun.

  • T410 Power Manager

The Power Manager seems to have a mind of its own and is bcoming quite annoying:
The screen brightness always defaults to full bright when starting, or coming back fro sleep, screen saver, etc.
    The fan changes pitch randomly
The Power Manager seems like a good idea, but having to reset the screen brightness over and over is too much.
Can this be corrected?  If so, how do I do it?

I also hit the power gague not displayed problem on win7 64bit edition. The windows registery key for C:\PROGRA~2\ThinkPad\UTILIT~1\PWMTR64V.DLL is not incorrectly under wow64 registery entry. This cause the power manager background service not started when Windows is started.
To fix the problem, Just add a run entry under HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run\ with value "rundll32 C:\PROGRA~2\ThinkPad\UTILIT~1\PWMTR64V.DLL,PwrMgrBkGndMonitor".

  • Print & fax (system preference panel) reset?

    Hello,
I can't print. I'm running out of options.
As part of the troubleshooting, I have removed the printer (reset the printing system…) from the system preference panel.
When I re-enter the printer, I get the same (false) "out of toner" message when I want to print.
Is there another cache or preference panel in the system that I can trash to reset the printer (yellow toner) fuel gague?
The "out of toner message" is sticky. The cartridge is new and I have removed and reentered the printer a few times.
Is there a plist or something that will regenerate itself when I reinstall the printer on AirPort?
Must I reboot between reset and reenter?

The issue is being caused by SNMP status information. We had devices that were using an EFI "Fiery" controller and they were experiencing the same issue after the Mac to 10.6.8. Following is the information that EFI released in a technical bulltetin. Depending on what printer you have, the following may be of some help.
EFI Tech Ticker Alert June 27, 2011
After installing the OSX 10.6.8 update, the printer shows status as paused and will not resume. Note not all Fiery printers are affected with this new Apple update. We are looking for a resolution to this from Apple.
For users who are seeing this problem in the field and can't wait for a fix from Apple, there is a workaround that can be made in the CUPS filter. This workaround deactivates some status information from the printer to the print driver but still enables printing.
If your Fiery printer has this issue follow the short term workaround solution below.
This workaround consists of adding a *cupsSNMPSupplies: False line to a ppd file in the /etc/cups/ppd folder.
You’ll need administrative privileges to perform this workaround. Detailed steps are outlined below.
For this example we will use ColorPrinter as the name of the printer affected by the 10.6.8 update.
    1. From the Finder menu choose Go, then Go to Folder...
    2. Enter /etc/cups/ppd in the Go to Folder dialog box and choose Go.
    3. Find the ppd named ColorPrinter.ppd. (This is the same name as the ColorPrinter in Print and Fax with a .ppd extension. )
    4. Drag the ColorPrinter.ppd to the Desktop.
    5. Open the ColorPrinter.ppd with TextEdit.
    6. At the end of the PPD add the following line exactly as written: *cupsSNMPSupplies: False
    7. Save the modified ColorPrinter.ppd to the Desktop.
    8. From the /etc/cups/ppd folder, move the original ColorPrinter.ppd to the trash. Authenticate when prompted. 9. Drag the modified ColorPrinter.ppd from the Desktop to the /etc/cups/ppd folder. Authenticate when prompted.
    10. Printing should now work as expected. (You may have to start the print queue if it was previously paused.)

  • Evaluating the Health of an SSD

    Hello Everyone-
I recently had the chance to purchase a used SSD for a great price that I couldn't resist.  It is a Samsung made model that I believe came out of another Macbook Pro becasue it shows up with the following name in system preferences: APPLE SSD SM512E.  I used Carbon Copy Cloner to clone my drive and then I installed it in my new MacBook Pro.  I am utterly amazed by the proformace improvement.  It is night an day faster.  Also, I noticed Trim support was enabled automatically.  I have a question regarding sustainability given that this drive has an unknown history to me:
How can I tell if there are any issues with this SSD?  Are there any free utilities to gague it's health?  Seeing as all this is due to my desire to save money, I can't afford software that will cost a lot to answer these questions.
How do SSD's fail if/when they do?  Will I start loosing little bits of data, will it start to freeze more, or will it just become unbootable instantly?
If there are any issues with the drive now and I use time machine to backup, will those issues be carried over onto my backup rendering it unstable/unusable?
Do you know how apple deals with this sort of warrenty on a drive that is "theirs" but has moved from one machine to another?
Thanks for your help, and I really appreciate any help/advice you guys can offer.
    Ben
PS - I am well aware of the risk of using non-new hard drives.  I realize this is a risk, and I'm trying to mitigate that in whatever way I can.

    Thanks Kappy-
I really appreciate your response.  Havings spent a bit of time on this, I think I have answers to question 2-4.  Question 1 seems a little more fuzzy:
How can I check on the health of my drive.I HAVE NO IDEA.  It seems like things like disk warrior will give ambiguous advice.  Also, I don't know if any of these types of tools are free.
How do SSD's fail?SSD's fail catastrophically when they fail.  One day they work, and another they just stop working.  I assume that means that if it's working, there is nothing wrong with it and there is no way to predict when anything will go wrong. (http://www.makeuseof.com/tag/data-recovered-failed-ssd/)
Time machine backups, If they complete and are verified, will not be impacted by any latent issues that I can not see in my SSD. If the drive fails, I'll be able to jump back to my backup assuming there were no hardware issues.
Will I get any support from Apple?I'm not going to get any support from apple if something goes wrong because the drive is not in the original machine (implying I've opened the computer and changed components).
I guess my question comes down to one issue:  in the past I knew hard drives to develop "bad blocks" or something that sort of became third rails.  If something critical gets written to one of these, everything collapses.  This is of course just one type of failure.  I was assuming a similar thing might happen with my SDD.  I just wanted to find a way to see if there were bad things sitting in the background that I could identify pro-actively to guard against a big failure.  It doesn't appear that there is a way to do that, and I'm not even sure if SSD's have the same issues.
    Thanks,
    Ben
