  • Best cooling pad for Macbook pro 15" with retina (2013)?

    Hi,
I have a Macbook pro 15" with retina display, bought in 2013 and I started playing Starcraft on the machine. It becomes extremely hot, almost unbearable to touch and after searching online, I've been told that overheating of macs is relatively common. It is also extremely noisy. Firstly, is this something that I should be worried about, i.e. is it normal? (it is still under warranty) Also, I was looking to get a cooling pad- which one would you recommend? I couldn't find many macbook pro w/ retina display specific ones, so I thought maybe a generic laptop cooling pad?
There are so many to choose from and I don't know where to start! Perhaps the Cooler Master NotePal X3?
    Thank you for your help!

    is it normal?
Is the game rated for the GPU on the Mac (look at the game's specs)?  If not, then I would not run it on that Mac.
If it is rated for the GPU on the Mac, then no, it is not normal, and I would have the machine looked at, after running the hardware test that came with it.
See my tip about MacBook Pro heat:
kmb kmbp: How to deal with MacBook Pro and MacBook heat?
The GPU is the Graphics Processor Unit.
A cooling pad might help, but it might also mask a more serious problem.      I've used this cooler on Powerbooks before:
    http://www.amazon.com/Antec-Notebook-Cooler-USB-Powered/dp/B0000BVYTV
But only outside warranty.   Mind you, because of the heat, sometimes some of the darker markings on the edge of the cooler and come off on the bottom of the notebook.  Hence why I would only use it outside of warranty, since such marks may make the AppleCare representative think you might have done something to damage it.

  • Upgrade SATA drive for macbook late 2008

    Hello!!
I am here to ask for help. Let me tell you a bit more about my Mac:
Late 2008 silver 13" MacBook 250GB 2GB RAM 2.4GHz IntelCore2Duo DDR3 MB467LL/A, currently at 10.5.8 OSx system (yes I know I need to update the software as well!)
I currently bought 4GB kit (2x2GB) RAM to upgrade on my silver MacBook (late 2008), and would also like to update my hard drive.
I have looked around on online shops for 2.5" 9mm SATA drive, and came across to 1TB for not too bad a price (between £85 to £100).
Anyone know whether if this is ok for my laptop?
Samsung, WD Scorpio Blue and Toshiba, all are at 5400rpm for 1TB. (However there is 750GB Seagate 7200rpm 16MB - recommended???)
Large memory/drive are usually much needed with me as I do use a lot of design work e.g. Adobe InDesign/Illustrator/Photoshop...you get the drift .
Any advice would be much appreciated!
Looking forward to hear from you soon!
    Thanks again,
    ejburton.

If all the technical specs (like SATA, physical dimensions, power usage etc) all match then you can use any drive of any available size in your MBP. Right now it appears that the largest available is the Western Digital 250GB 5400rpm drive where as the fastest is the Hitachi 200GB 7200rpm drive. Fujitsu and Toshiba have annonce 300GB drives though I've not heard that either are yet shipping.
I have to say that I'm very pleased with the Hitachi 200GB 7200rpm drive.

  • Replacement keys for MacBook Late 2008 Aluminum Unibody

Is there any way to order replacement keys for the Late 2008 MacBook Aluminum Unibody model?
I ordered and received a new Enter and Shift key from numerous Apple retailers, but they do not fit properly. They only fit and snap correctly on the MacBook PRO Aluminum models.

Make an appointment at your local Genius Bar. I had a bad key a few months ago and it took all of 30 seconds for them to run to the back and replace it.

  • Antec Cooling Pad for MacBook Pro

I bought the Antec Cooling pad with two fans for my MacBook pro, when it woudl charge and working it got pretty warm. I have to say, having the fans running under the MacBook dropped the temps significantly, I think. On average I would say around 10 degrees C is what I am seeing.
I"ve got iTunes, Word, Mail, Safari, Firefox all running with the temp showing 48 C on both cpu...give or take a degree flux.

Count me as another happy Antec Cooling Pad owner.
At home, where I primarily use the MBP for OSX, I have the iLap, which is a great but passive cooling stand for use on the table or my lap. Works fine, lowers temps by an average of 3-4C.
However at work I often have to run WinXP on my MBP. That puts it in full torch mode, for whatever reason. I bought an Antec Cooling pad for work, and I don't have the figures (as I don't have a temp monitor on the Windows side) but I would estimate that it's cooled it at least 10C, maybe more. Routinely the top of the MBP where my palms rest would get past warm, almost to hot, and the speaker grills would emit hot air, a lot hotter than when running OSX.
After I bought the Antec, and put 4 small rubber stoppers on it to elevate the MBP about 1/4" above the aluminum surface (which did seem to increase airflow), now the MBP running Windows feels just like when it does on idle running OSX.
Two thumbs up, and a hearty recommendation for anyone who has to use WinXP on the MBP or who constantly has the MBP on very high load.

  • Game controller for MacBook Pro?

Are ANY game controllers made especially for Mac? I have tried the Logitech wired version and the Logitech Rumblepad 2 wireless version and neither seem to work with my G5. I even added USB Overdrive, which recognizes the Logitech controllers, and have tried to set the prefs in various games, but still cannot get them to work when the games launch. Seems like there ought to be some easy, plug-and-play game controller for Mac. Any advice? I am very computer literate, yet cannot seem to accomplish this very basic task: Hook up a game controller (that SAYS it works on Mac OS X) and get it to work. (I called Logitech tech support and they said the controllers should work on a Mac, but their driver software and their tech support do not support use on a Mac. Huh?)

I like the Logitech Gamepad F310 for games on my Mac. You're right new games are much better with a game controller!

  • Cooling pad for Macbook

    Hey everyone.
As Lyssa half-solved my problm of my Mac overheating,
it comes to see that it will still overheat when running heavy applications.
My question is now that my friend is overseas, should I get him to get me a laptop cooling pad (Since the ones in New Zealand suck and the range is overly pathetic)
How much difference would it make?

I'll second that nice belkin coolpad as a suggestion.
Let's make sure it's not overheating and is just doing its job!
Here's some more information to consider:
~I've noticed on my machine running 10.5.6 that the fan kicks in at a slightly lower CPU temp than it did before. Not sure if the same holds true for 10.4.11 as I only have that on my iBook.
~How warm does your machine actually run when idle? How about when running several low-key processes?
~The fan in a MacBook WILL run more frequently than the fan in a PowerPC-based computer like the iBook. The processors used in MacBooks run a bit hotter than the ones in previous computers; this means the fan will kick in sooner than you may expect.
~I can't say if an external cooling pad will make an extreme difference in temperatures. On my iBook, it's enough to keep the internal fan from kicking in but I've yet to try it with my MacBook. It certainly won't hurt to have one though.
~If you're doing anything processor intensive (editing video, running software like Photoshop, or many games that take up all/most of the screen), the fan WILL turn on and I don't believe the cooling pad will stop it. Like I've already said, it certainly won't hurt though.

  • New Hard drive for MacBook Pro 2008

    Hi,
My 2008 MacBook Pro is really slow and I was told I could update my hard drive on it and upgrade the memory and speed. Does anyone by any chance know which one will work for my laptop??
It its the fall 2008 model
Processor: 2.4 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo
    Memory: 2GB 1067 MHz DDR3
Any information would be really helpful!!
    Thanks

One more thing, and thanks for your patience:
Applications > Utilities > System Profiler  (I believe that is where it is located)
On the left side of the window that opens up will be a section near the top under Hardware that says Memory.
There will be a section inside memory that says Memory Slots:  Can you copy that?

  • A writing pad for MacBook Pro?

I do a lot of research and would like to write notes while reading. Is there an add-on writing pad that could accept note taking while still displaying iBooks? Please say yes. :)

    Hello Jhawker23,
As you are on a MacBook Pro, you can run another program, like TextEdit, along with iBooks and take notes as you read.
iBooks also has the capability to add notes within.

It all depends on where you want your notes and how fancy they need to be.

  • Suitcase for MacBook (Late 2008)

    Hello,
I am using the MacBook for business meetings. Often the MacBook is in an traveling bag but that is roughly handled. I am searching for a stylish suitcase for this MacBook, with place for the MacBook, the adapter and some documents. I'd like the suitcase to be alumium style. A lock would be nice, but not needed.
Searched some sites, but the most is for the MacBook Pro and not the 13" MacBook.
Anyone has experience with a suitcase for his MacBook?

I can't think of any at the top of my head, but there are sleeves and cases that you can put into another bag w/ other stuff.. something such as the apple sac cover the laptop and also have a little places for the magsafe
