Games for mac

Hi,
I'm not sure where to post this, but I'd like to find an upgraded game called Descent. I have an old version that only works with OS9. I had alot of fun playing it before I had 3 kids!!! Now that my kids are older, I'd like to play it on a newer mac. any help locating a version that will work on either a PM or intel imac.
John

Hi John,
I don't think that you will find an OSX upgrade version of Descent.
But try a search on MacUpdate (http://www.macupdate.com/macintel.php) for a freeware version of it.
Haven't tried it but maybe it helps to quench your thirst...
Have Fun
Stefan

Use the Migration Assistant(it'll put the data into a different user account if you've already created one), or drag them and their data through Ethernet, wireless, Target Disk mode, or through an external drive, or reinstall them from the original source.

  • Why are there so few games for Mac OS X?

Yes, I do know the answer, because everybody writes software for Windows.
But aren't we at a point where times are changing? Many people exchange their PC's for a Mac nowadays, and the number of Linux (which is basically the same under the hood) is rapidly growing too. Those people like to play games too, don't they?
Does anyone see some light in the distance for companies porting their games to the Mac too?

Agreed. You have to remember everything is drive by economics in our capitalistic society so games are written for the OS that has largest market penetration and most likely to return huge profit and currently that is Windows. That is also why one of the most famous game programmers, John Carmack, just recently rewrote some of his games for iPhone/ipod touch and made quite a nice profit from his own account.
"Carmack said that there was a lot of "hand wringing" initially over the idea of spending the company's own money (there was no publisher to help fund development) on making games for the iPhone. Doom Resurrection, when it hit, was probably the most expensive game to develop for the iPhone, Carmack says.
"It did really well for us," he said. "It was Wolfenstein Classic that made the argument for iPhone development for me. We made quite a bit of money off of that."

That is not to say that Mac's can't be used as game machines since Apple actually has a webpage dedicated exactly to this you can check out:
    http://www.apple.com/games/hardware/
So in a nutshell to answer the OP question the reason you see fewer games on mac's is because it's not profitable. As you can see if there is no technical limitations writing games like Doom3 for iphone there is none for the mac.
I know I've personally not bought a macosx game since I also have a pc and use that for games so I'm not helping the business case for more games for mac. Vote with your pocket and go out and buy more mac only games if you want to see more for the mac.

  • Software and games for mac os 9.1

i been Google searching software and games for mac os 9.1 but i cant find software and games for mac os 9.1? dose anyone know a website to get software and games for mac os 9 only
    thinks mac os x 10.2.8 :]

You might check the computer software section at a local Half-Price Books store, sometimes they have some new in-box Mac OS 9 software.
Some kid games that I used to have were Freddi Fish, Pajama Sam, and the Backyard Sports series from Humongous Entertainment, they run pretty well on an old G3.
Pangea had a demo version of Nanosaur:

Freeverse has a link to the original version of Wingnuts that should work in OS 9 on this page

  • Are there online sites that have safe free games for mac?  for downloading?

new to apple and just bought a mac.  are there online sites that are safe for downloading free games for mac?

You have posted in the iMac(PPC) forum which is hardware that Apple stopped selling in early 2006. So unless the your new Mac is a very old one then you have probably posted in the wrong forum.
Please clarify which Mac you have?
Please tell us which verion of OS X your Mac is running?

  • What are some, good, cool, and fun games for Mac OS 9?

Hello I would like to know some good games for Mac OS 9. Any good game suggestions are appreciated. I would also like to know if there are any good games for kids ages 3 to 9. But like I said any suggestions are appreciated.
    Thanks!

    Hi, cgeuss1621 -
...i guess the page is gone.
The link to the bungie site worked for me. Here's the supplemental page for it for the downloads -
    http://source.bungie.org/get/
...i was wondering if it would be possible to run marathon on snow leopard or if you can it off the disc
No OS 9 program can be run directly in any version of OSX. OSX 10.4 and earlier can use OS 9 as Classic, which provides an environment in which many OS 9 programs can be run; however, any program which needs direct access to the machine's hardware (such as many games do) will not run well, if at all, in Classic.
Both Snow Leopard and Leopard do not support Classic at all.

  • Games for Mac (Snow Leopard)

    Hi,
I am really bored over Christmas Break, and I need a game for my Mac. Any recommendations? And it has to be compatible with Snow Leopard 10.6.3, 2 GB RAM, and a 2.4 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo processor. Thanks.

It means I got tired of system and/or security updates breaking (whatever) game I was playing, then having the game publishers tech support tell me the (only) way to fix the problem is to downgrade the OS.
So I bought a PS2 (later a PS3) and no longer have that problem.
If I want to play, or replay, any game, irregardless of how long ago the game was published, it just works.
Therefor, if the OP has limited time to play, and as a result, may take several months to complete a game, there may be better platform options.

  • Scrabble game for mac

I am so happy with my mac I haven't had time to do much of anything, I am always learning stuff and doing new things with the computer however I am a Scrabble fan and I downloaded it to iPAD but I can't find it for iMac.  On the App store is nowhere to be found.  Is there any way I can download the game and play in my iMac?

Looks like that one is iOS only, but Googling scrabble for Mac turns up lots of hits.

  • Games for Mac Please

Will there be games that run natively in the Mac OSX environment anytime soon?
I love my video game consoles but some games are only available for the computer.
If I were to purchase an ipod I'd use it as a portable video player rather than using it to listen to music I'm more of a video fan than a music fan anyway.

There are thousands of games available for Mac OS X. See my FAQ*:

Please note, if you want to learn more about Applications available for Mac OS X, post to the Using Mac OS X forums most closely resembling your own:

  • Trying to buy a Solitaire Game for Mac.

BestBuy told me to go to the APPS Store on the Apple site.  I did find some Solitaire apps but it looked
to me like they are all for phones?  Are they one and the same?   I would prefer to just buy a CD vs downloading
but the only CD's I find have all sorts of Arcade games.  Anyone know where I can get a Solitaire CD?  Thanks

If you access the Appstore from an iPhone or iPad it will show applications for the iOS platform.  When I access the Appstore from my Mac and search for Solitaire games I find plenty for the OS X platform, many are free - e.g. Solitaire!, Free Solitaire 3D, Full Deck Solitaire.  Look in the Information pane on the right of the Appstore window to see what platform the game is for.  For something as basic as a solitaire game I would just download one of the free ones, no need to buy a CD.  I doubt you'd be able to purchase a CD that was just a solitaire game.  As you've found most will have a variety of games on.

  • Good games for Mac Mini2,1 with OS X 10.6.8?

    Hi everyone!
I have recently purchased a Mac Mini2,1 off eBay (1.83ghz, about to upgrade to 4GB RAM, OS X 10.6.8 (will soon be getting 10.7)) and I love action, adventure and puzzle games so I was wondering if there is any good games (free or paid) for my Mac Mini? They don't have to be on the App Store - I can use CNET Download etc.
    Thanks guys
    -Felix

I have no suggestions for game but not that if you update to Lion (10.7) some app may no longer work. See:
Upgrading to 10.7 and above, don't forget Rosetta!

  • Best bridge card game for Mac

I'm looking for a really good Bridge (card game) app to play against on the computer and learn the game. Anything out there that works with Leopard?
Also, a good online site would be great as well. Thanks!

Having tried a number of bridge programs over the years, I have yet to find one that bids and plays well enough to let even a beginner learn about the game. I understand there are some PC versions that are somewhat better, but not one Mac program.
If I may suggest, however, playing online with other people who are interested in learning is a much better way to go about it, plus it is much more social. [OKBridge|http://www.okbridge.com] is an online bridge club that has been around since [1990|http://www.okbridge.com/new-signup/deployed/about.php] (yeah, it's about as old as the Internet) and has 13,000 members all over the world. I've played at tables with players from four different continents! There are complete beginners and world champions, and a wonderful friendly atmosphere.
Sad to say, [Pogo|http://www.pogo.com], while free, does not have the same ability to sustain a beginner. You can play, but be prepared to endure frustration. I play chess and backgammon on Pogo, but the bridge rooms are sorely lacking, and the level of play is terrible.

i think leopard + boot camp + vista will be the choice...

  • Retro Computer games for Mac

Hi, I am a huge fan of retro computer games, such as Code masters Dizzy series etc. And was wondering if it was possible to have these on my MacBook Pro?
    Thanks in anticipation

Ok, I'll give some (brief) instructions for each one, but it's all from memory so I can't vouch for them being 100% accurate (and some of it may depend on the configuration of your machine):
MAME: Download the DMG file and open it in Finder; a new Finder window should open -- drag the contents to the Applications folder; launch it by double clicking the copy in Applications and it should launch.
VICE: A bit more complex; you need to install X11 first (which can be downloaded from Apple's site, or installed from disk 2 of your OS X installation disks -- downloading is probably better as it will be the latest version). Once you've installed that, download the GZ file, double click on it in Finder, and it should create a DMG file. Now repeat the instructions from above.
Atari800MacX: Download the GZ file and double click on it; as above this will create a DMG file. Once that's there, follow the instructions for VICE.
ZXSP: The site seems to have gone down now, but the instructions should be the same as for Atai800MacX -- this is the file you need to download.
Once they're installed they should all have help of some sort; MAME is probably the trickiest to get to grips with, but the others should be pretty familiar to you if you've ever used the machines in question.

  • Zoo Tycoon game for OS X Mountain Lion?

I have bought a new game for Mac, it's called "Zoo Tycoon". It requests Mac OS X 10.1 or newer systems. In my MacBook Pro, I have the Mountain Lion (10.8.3). Once I downloaded the program from the CD and I try to open it, it tells me that is not possible to open because "PowerPC games are not anymore supported". How can I overcome this? Any ides?

    Jordi68 wrote:
That doesn't sound good! Do you know if I can play with the newer version "Zoo Tycoon 2"?

Try not to accept NO for an answer; especially after only 6 minutes...
Try this patch for Zoo Tycoon 2 to work on your Mac:
