Games on the iMac Intel

I have found a lot of posts about people having problems using games with the new iMac Intels. I was wondering if people could let me know what games they have that work on the new iMac Intel and what games don't

As in I can't install the game client itself. I click on the Setup it just says there's no specified program to open it. And I clicked on something and now it opens with disk utility which does not do anything to help. And now I dont know how to set it back. Help.

  • Running windows PC games on the Imac Intel

Is it possible to run windows based PC games on the intel duo? If so what do I need to do to get them to work?

You need to be running Windows, either by partitioning the drive with BootCamp and installing a copy of Windows, or by using a virtualization package of which the only one I'm aware is Parallels Workstation (that will also require installation of Windows).

  • Will the iMac Intel up Convert to 64Bit when running a 64bit app?

I am running Avid Media Composer 5.5.1 (Latest Version with 64 bit) on iMac 24" Intel Core 2 Duo 3.06GHz with 512 VRAM.
    I have OSX 10.6.7.
I read somewhere that OSX Snow Leopard would convert itself to 64 bit when you run a 64 bit app.
    Where do I check that?
Or how do I up convert to 64 bit?
    Please reply back soon
    Thanks,

Never heard of that. A 32bit Application would run in 32bit mode, and a 64bit App would run as 64bit.
You can check the with the Activity Monitor (Applications -> Utilities) by looking for the entry "Kind" after the Application Name.
The system itself can be checked by
Apple menu -> About This Mac -> More Info... -> Software -> "64-bit Kernel and Extensions: No/Yes"
The iMac here works as an 32bit machine, but running Applications in 64bit.

  • Is the iMac intel duo plug and play?

I am getting a iMac intel duo for christmas and this will be my first mac. Does it recognise new hardware like a usb memory stick or do you have to manually detect it?

I don't think that I would trust that idea. It would be safer and save you a world of hurt from finding out the hard way to eject anything that appears with an icon on the Mac desktop, especially if that icon is accompanied with the eject arrow icon in the left-side panel of a Finder window. There are plenty of folks who have screwed up Firewire/USB devices by just at will disconnecting them. USB key drives, in my experience, are pretty much nonrecoverable if you fry them.

  • What do you think about the iMac Intel 17"

I wonder if there is a big difference between the iMac 17" 1.83 Ghz (from 999$) and the iMac 17" with 2 Ghz (from 1199$). One of them includes apple remote, 1Go SDRAM and a superdrive DVD writer for 200$ more than the other. I'd like to know what you think about the iMac 1.83Ghz 999$, should i wait and choose the 2Ghz model ?

I checked out both models, and I think the 2.0 Ghz is actually a much better deal. OS X is amazing but its very graphics intensive and uses a lot of memory. The included video card in the 2 ghz machine helps a lot. Furthermore, the ability to write DVDs makes it fast and easy to archive your data for backup and portability. I would strongly recommend the upgraded system, unless your intended uses don't include much video/audio application. If you are going to be playing around with a lot of music or movies, the upgraded graphics, memory, and processor speed will really help.

  • ZR 100, Imovie and the Imac Intel

I bought my Intel Imac when it first came out this year. I also bought a canon ZR100 with it. Ever since then Imovie will crash when the camera is connected through firewire. It doesn't crash automatically, just randomly.
I have tried archiving and installing and that did not help. I have also removed the generic brand extra RAM that I bought, it still crashed. I have also connected an older canon Ultura camcorder and it still crashed.
Today while at the Apple Store, one of the Mac genius's said that I should do an erase and install. Is this neccessary? Should I try replacing the firewire cable? Does Imovie even support the canon ZR 100?
    Any suggestions would help.

Erase and install is certainly better than archive and install. Do you have an external hard drive you could do a test install of OS X and iMovie before doing the erase and install?
I don't think compatibility should be an issue the Z100 is just a DV camcorder which uses FireWire to transfer DV to the Mac.
Have you got everything up to date? Have you tried the camcorder on another Mac?

  • What audio interfaces are compatible with the iMac/Intel computer?

I see that MOTU has Intel-compatible drivers for its high-end audio interfaces. Are there any other audio interfaces--USB or Firewire--that are at present compatible with the Intel Duo Core machines that are under $300? I've checked with Tascam and Presonus, and theirs are not yet compatible. I have an inquiry in to M-Audio, but haven't heard back yet.
PS: Does anyone else think it is just a teensy bit dishonest of Apple to be selling audio interfaces in its online store without pointing out explicitly that they don't work on the Intel machines?

Well, it looks like M-Audio's Firewire Solo has a beta driver available for the Duo Core. Better than a poke in the eye with a sharp stick. And it's well under $200 at a couple online stores.

  • IMac (Intel) Restore DVDs don't work if the drive has been formatted first

    Here's an interesting find...
we have a gob of iMac G5s that were being re-imaged and one iMac Intel was mistakenly re-imaged with a G5 dmg (via Firewire Target Disk Mode).
As expected, the iMac Intel wouldn't boot from a 10.4.4 image built on a G5, but now when I try to restore the Intel back to the out-of-the-box state (booting from its OS dvds), the installer reports "You cannot install Mac OS X on this volume. Mac OS X cannot start up from this volume." The Options button is greyed-out (where normally you could select Options and choose Erase and Install).
Further inspection on another out-of-the-box Intel iMac (in Firewire Target Disk Mode) shows its hard drive is actually partitioned into two volumes: One is a 200MB partition, the other is the remainder and mounts as Macintosh HD. The 200 MB partition will not mount (via Disk Utility).
I'm assuming that since the Intel iMac's drive was erased prior to booting from it's OS DVDs, the necessary partitions are not present.
Anyone have any info? I'm guessing that since I did not initiate the restore from the DVD's "Install Mac OS X and Applications" script the drive did not get partitioned correctly...
    TIA -m.

Yeah, I found that out. Here's one link that describes the issue:
    http://db.tidbits.com/getbits.acgi?tbart=08405
My point was to illustrate the OS Installer/Disk Utility’s inability (while booted from the OS DVD) to provide the option to choose the GUID partitioning scheme for a volume during an “erase and install” on a drive that has been previously formatted under the “traditional” partition scheme – the “options” button does not appear.
To reinstall to factory defaults, I had to boot the target iMac into Firewire disk mode and use another iMac (Intel) and its Disk Util to get the “options” button to select the GUID partition scheme.
Oh well, I’m sure Apple’s working on that…

  • PowerMac G5 vs iMac Intel Core Duo

Hello, I currently have a PowerMac G5 Dual Core and am thinking of getting another computer. I have a question. In terms of performance, what is faster, the G5 (Dual) on the PowerMac or the Intel Core Duo on the iMac (running at the same speed).
And at the bottomline, what would be the machine that I want for gaming, publishing, and video editing? The PowerMac G5 (Dual) or the iMac with Intel.
Thanks for the assistance!! Have a good one.
P.S. Are there any plans of releasing a PowerMac with an Intel processor.
    PowerMac G5   Mac OS X (10.4.6)
    PowerMac G5   Mac OS X (10.4.6)

(Oh...right...sorry for mentioning that) Thanks for hte response!
Anyways, I just want a computer that will not be outdated for a while. I don't want to purchase the G5, and then months down the road, not see the G5 in production anymore.
One thing about the iMac I'm not too fond of is the lack of upgradibility (or so it seems so). Due to it's size, it would be very difficult for someone to upgrade it's internal components.
I will be purchasing either today evening of tommorow, and I want to know what will be my best choice for the future, the iMac Intel Core Duo or the PowerMac G5.
I always thought of the PowerMac G5 as a beast, and I still do, but some of the latest reviews and benchmark tests I have seen have said that the iMac (with Intel Core Duo) has performed very close to the PowerMac.

  • IMac Intel partition login problem

Since yesterday our iMac runs very slowly and refuses to log in to the primary identity, although it will very slowly load two minor user identities. When one tries to log in on the main original user one, the screen goes blue without wavy lines and after 2 minutes or so goes back to the user identity login screen without comment. The only comment from the console was as follows:
Jan 3 16:02:18 a-hs-computer/System/Library/CoreServices/loginwindow.app/Contents/Mac0S/loginw indow: Login Window Application Started
Jan 3 16:02:19 a-hs-computer(243): Login Window Started Security Agent
Mac OSX Version 10.4.1 (Build 8S2167)
    2010-01-03 +0100
    That is all!
At 15:38 there is a crash report mdimport server crashed: 'SystemUIServer not responding', 'crashdump crashed' which repeats for 4-5 minutes incl. an 'Isregister crashed' in the middle somewhere, but is too long to repeat verbatim here.
Checking with disk utility, the report goes as follows:
    "Checking HFS Plus volume
    Checking Extents Overflow file
    Checking catalog file
    Invalid node structure (in red)
The volume Macintosh HD needs to be repaired
(The program now demands I put in an administrative password but when I DO SO it stops the checking and just adds:
Error: The underlying task reported failure on exit (in bigger red letters)
    1 HFS volume checked
    Volume needs repair.
(But the repair button is greyed out.)
Macs used to have a disk repair utility SOSDisk (with ambulance graphic) that one could use from the OS System disk, when starting with this. Can one repair with the iMac Intel OS CD?
I saw our old AppleCare CD has TechTool on it. So installed it and tested the machine. The 2006 version reported that the Directory Scan had failed but the Drive Hardware had passed (so perhaps it is reparable). The Surface Scan was so slow that I skipped it once it had reported 4 errors. The final item, Volume Structure failed.
Techtool then says TechTool Deluxe can attempt to "repair the damage" or "reduce the chance of future problems" but I find no trace of a repair tool on it. It takes one back to Apple Support to download the latest version of TechTool Deluxe (2009) but I find no trace of a useable repair tool on that one either, merely a checking system. This time the test passed the Directory scan which had failed with the earlier version, and I let the Surface Scan run slowly to its end over 2 hours, when it reported Failed with 72 errors. Volume Structure failed too.
The newer Techtool is v. 3.1.3. As I did not put in the Apple Care identity when downloading (ours has expired) so is it possible I have a short version without the repair kit? Does anyone know Apple's policy on that? It seemed to download fine without the ApCare identity.
Techtool instructions say one should burn the disk image of TechTool Deluxe DVD on a DVD using Disk Utility but when I get the disk image up and click on the burn button on DU, the DVD starts burning but spits the DVD back out after 30 seconds of burning. I am doing it wrong or is the DVD burn device broke. The machine will still burn CDs as I made some last night. But I have never ever burned a DVD using Disk Utility (1st tries today).
Also, is it possible to start the machine using the Apple Care CD as system and repair with that? It seemed unlikely and this machine now takes so long to restart and really start working (2-3 hours) that I do not dare risk it yet. I use the damaged iMac still to contact you here.
    Thanks for any advice..!

Unfortunately we are probably the only Mac in this desolate corner of North Germany where the inhabitants have always massively opted for Windows as they always go for the cheapest option. As far as I know we are the only Mac owners in a school of over 1500 people with 150 teachers. Had I been able to borrow a Mac, I would have linked it to ours long ago, got our data out and run DiskWarrior from the healthy Mac. The Hamburg techies are extremely expensive as they wrongly assume that anyone with a Mac must be eating off gold plate.
I wd grab the opportunity to use a normal keyboard, if available. I see u are from California; that's a paradise for available Macs.
Don't forget that we can't use the normal means of getting a disk to eject as there is no hard drive left worth the name and therefore no system operating, except whatever the system might be (unclear) on the DiskWarrior application,
    but that is totally frozen.
Your feeling is that I want everything! Yes, another Mac, that would solve the problem. But if you mean that I need help for trifles you are quite wrong. I went through the lists of methods of ejecting disks listed on the web and by Apple before posting the request you have just replied to. And they look OS dependent to me, except perhaps the mouse button technique.
In any case my first concern is to close that DiskWarrior application to avoid it being damaged before closing the disk, but that looks increasingly impossible.
So far by my own efforts in this crisis I have largely solved a lot of problems worth at least 3500 dollars in techie bills had they done it. When we started by ringing the firm we bought the iMac from new, they said they could not help us over the jammed user partition problem, and merely provided the address of a data recovery service that would charge "between 2000 and 3000 Euros (3-4000 dollars)for saving the data on the HD". I refused and myself worked out how to hack into the user partition and was able to put most of the work and business data in the Documents folder onto sticks before the HD finally folded. Essentially the holiday pics in iPhoto remain still to do.
I don't like the idea of having to sacrifice a brandnew DiskWarrior program for 108 Euros but if no one has any suggestions... Pity all this happened one month after our Apple Care 3 yr warranty ended.

  • Connecting non-powered speakers to iMac Intel

Is there a product that will connect non-powered speakers (that normally connect to a receiver), directly to the iMac Intel (mid 2006)? Either by a cable connector to the headphone port or USB?
I bought 2 Harman Kardon speakers super cheap last year, but have no receiver to power them. I guess I could buy a receiver but I don't really have the space for it. Today, I just bought the Griffin ProSpeaker Cable which connects non-power speakers to the iMac but found out it's for the older iMacs with 2.5mm port. The iMac Intels have a 3.5mm port.
    Any suggestions?
iMac 20" Intel Core Duo   Mac OS X (10.4.6)   Powerbook G4 Titanium

    Hi L.
Tried looking at the page your link directed me to but it was introducing a USB speaker. I know about the multimedia speakers for Apple computers but I'm looking at a way to use the speakers I already have.
I guess if there isn't a cable out there to help hook them up, I will have to purchase either a receiver and go through Airport Xpress or buy the multimedia speakers. (A bit more money than I was hoping to spend.)
    Thanks anyways.

  • Is there a virtual pc or Windows emulator for iMac intel duo?

    Hi there,
I just got a new iMac intel duo last week and its fantastic. Unfornatuly I need to run a stock market program that only runs on windows...
This is the only program that i need to run on the windows platform.
I was told to get the intel duo as it was the way things were going and that I may have to wait for the software side of things to catch up.
I currently have a workaround that is painfull, but I would like to have it all on the one machine...
Is there a virtual pc version for the iMac intel duo or are there other emulators I could use??

  • Backup drive keeps rotating after shutting down the iMac

    Hi,
since I installed Leopard, my backup drive (LaCie USB) stays in operational mode after I shut down the iMac (intel 20").
When I choose to shut down the mac, the drive starts to rotate but doesn't stop... Under Tiger this wasn't an issue.
I think the problem is that Leopard doesn't "tell" the LaCie drive to go in sleep mode before the computer shuts down.
Does anyone experience the same problem and know what the solution is?
    regards, Martijn

Actually it does open but nothing shows up. I can't use my iMac unless I use the Safari browser and I want to use Firefox! I'm at my wits end as to how to fix this. I have tried everything that troubleshooting has suggested on Mozilla support. Help!!!!!!!!
