Games on the Intel Mini?

Does anyone know of any great games (non-casual) that run decently on the Mac Mini? I have the Intel 1.83 Mac Mini and World of Warcraft runs great on lower settings, so I was wondering what other games run well on the Mini.

Some good threads on this topic at 123macmini.com.
People are reporting success with Nexuiz, DooM3, Prey, HL2, etc., much of it supported by screenshots. Of course the resolutions are low, and all eye-candy is turned off for the high end games, but they are evidently running satisfactorily. Also, some gamers are playing the high-end games within a window to enhance frame rate. Hardly ideal, but it appears to work. I can't verify the veracity of many of these claims, but I keep up with the various forums since I am interested in getting a mini myself.
EDIT: Some of those games are played on XP via boot camp, of course.

  • What's the "optimal" resolution for the Intel Mini's?

I was wondering how high the resolution can go on the intel mini's before the OS X UI starts to lose it's "responsiveness". When I mean "responsivenss", I mean stuff like expose and Dashboard maintaing a smooth animation etc. Thanks.

I'm more curious than anything, though I'm interested in an intel iBook when it comes out (likely to use an intel chipset for graphics.).
I was just wonder how the UI experience felt, even at high resolutions. I know that the general consensus is that the intel base macs have a much more reponsive UI but I know that stuff like expose animations on the PPC Mini's can get a bit juddery on a high resolution.
I don't run anything heavy like games but I like it when the UI feels like it's not on sandpaper.
I just tried a new iMac at a local reseller. Everything seemed more responsive in general. Resizing was nearly rock solid even on complicated windows such as iTunes, minimizing was smooth (even with the 'genie' effect) but for some odd reason the expose and dashboard animations seemed a bit choppy to me. Which is a bit confounding since it seemed to do everything else well. Maybe it was because the iMac at the store was using monitor spanning with a cinema display. Intel sure improves the UI experence.
The improvement is not compelling enough to get a new mini. The UI is decent on my current system. It's nice to see that Apple continues to improve the UI speed on the PPC side of things.
I know that if I get a Intel iBook, resolution wouldn't matter becuase it would be fixed and relatively low. I was just curious if there was any UI performance degradation when resolutions go up.

  • Should I just wait untill the Intel Mini's are out to make the switch over?

I have been somewhat active on this board for the last month or so looking at the Apple Mini. I want a computer that never really slows down, or crashes a lot. Also, I want a computer that can do some light video editing, and some light gaming (think: Battlefield 1942!).. I'm thinking about waiting till the New Intel Mini's come out but I really don't know when that will be! I don't know if I can hold on for 8 more months with this crappy thing they call an OPERATING SYSTEM.
Do you guys know when the Intel's are coming out? When they do, thats when I might make the switch from XP to mac OX.
    Thank you all!

Though a bit belatedly, I thought it might be worth pointing out an issue that ought to cross the minds of those considering buying a mini but not sure whether to wait for the Intel models or not.
Aside from the fact that no-one knows when the Intel minis will be announced and what specs (thus performance) they will have, and the fact that as soon as the first models are out, there will be a tendency to want to wait until the next revision for the 'rev.a' bugs to get ironed out and some speed bumps ironed in, one important extra consideration is the software that's intended to be run.
All software at this time is G4 compatible, and many titles are either already in universal binary, or about to be so, thus would run natively on an Intel-mini. But some, Adobe CS and Microsoft Office (to name a couple of significant examples) are not universal yet, and while they likely will become so, it's not at all clear when. Until they ARE universal, those apps will run in emulation on an intel Mac, and performance is not reported to be stellar.
So I'd suggest to anyone considering the issues, to look at the titles you want to run, and make sure all the important ones are Intel-native already, or going to become so very soon. If they are, then waiting for an Intel mini is perfectly reasonable as long as you don't have any immediate need and can wait however long it takes. But if any crucial apps are PPC only and likely to stay that way, I'd buy a G4-powered mini while they're still available, and trade it later when the crucial apps go Universal and the Intel models have settled down.

  • Will the G4 top housing case fit the Intel minis?

My friend has an intel mac and his case is just scratched up big time. Both on the top and sides. Looks really ugly. I found him a case from a G4 mini for dirt cheap and was wondering if it would fit his intel mini. I know the intel's have an infrared sensor and I told him that the G4 replacement case would cover it and that the remote might not work- but he's okay with that since he says he's never used the remote.
So does anyone know any issues that would make it incompatible? The only thing I could see in pics on the internet is that it kind of looks like the cd-rom slot is slightly more to the left ( http://media.arstechnica.com/reviews/hardware/macmini.media/minifront.jpg ). Is this true? Because I think that would be a huge issue.
    Thanks in advance!

The ports on the rear are in different places in the G4 and Intel Minis.
For starters, the Intel has 4 USB ports and a microphone jack, while the G4 Mini has 2 USB and no microphone jack.
I don't think this project is a good idea.

  • 3.5 HDD for the Intel minis?

I heard a rumor somewhere the new Intel minis have a 3.5" HDD. Is this true?
On a similar note, Apple should produce a premium mini, with the same specs as the iMac, but without the screen and same small case design, even bigger. I would like to bring my own display with a powerful mini.
    Bryan

    Hello,
Screen burn in, 2 displays in a couple of months, I
think you are full of it!! I have a Rev A iMac G5 and
Well, the local dealer was quite surprised to see it as well. But, he came to my house, and hooked-up another monitor to make sure that it wasn't a video circuitry problem. And, concluded that it was definitely etched into the LCD panel.
Installing a new LCD panel immediately fixed the problem, and the currently etched images disappeared.
But, a little intensive work and new images are burned-in again.
have left the screen burning many days without screen
savers and have had only 2 desktop pictures. The last
picture is 1 +year old. I have the dock on the left
side from day one, and moved it and looked nothing!
even on shut down, Nothing "0" burn in here.
The problem isn't just from having a stationary image on the screen.
The iMac G5 seems to have suffered more from the combination of a stationary image and intensive (extremely hard work).
I found that if the temperature was high, that the screen would burn-in very quickly. Even on a brand-new panel.
But, that's the nature of how I need to use the machines. They are going to be pushed very hard.
In my case, I was working with audio (editing, refining, splicing, filtering, etc.), for a few hours.
The temps on the computer would rise to a nice cooking state (heat radiating at you).
I believe that it is the close quarters of the iMac that lead to this burn-in problem.
I think the panels would be fine if they were not subjected to extreme heat while displaying images.
But, when pushed hard, I believe that the image is actually "cooked" into the LCD panel.
I've never had any trouble with light usage causing burn-in. For example, iMovie and iDVD don't seem to stress the computer hard enough.
But, professional level (extremely demanding) audio editing seems to push it hard enough to really cook.
I would suspect that if you brought me any iMac G5 or CoreDuo that I could burn-in it's display permanently within 2 hours with my level of usage.
But, if I treated it nicely and babied it, then I'm sure I could keep the panel from burning-in. But, then if you're going to baby it, then there's no point in having all that power available.
In my case, the burn-in that I have seen looks less like "image-persistence" and more like someone took an exacto-knife and traced the outline of the windows (with buttons) into the LCD panel.
You can see a very defined (bright white) line that exactly matches the border of the windows and buttons that were present on the screen.
As another poster here mentioned, Image-Persistence is supposed to be reversible. But, the problems I have observed would not disappear.
    I tried Apple's solutions:
    1) Display a pure white image across the entire screen. I tried this for more than a day. No improvement. It just kept the panel warm, and further cooked-in the image.
    2) Leave it off for as long as the image was on the screen. Well, the image was only on the screen for a couple of hours to burn-in the image. I tried turning the computer off for several days (about a week) and no improvement at all.
The problem was definitely an image etched into the panel. Connecting an external LCD panel produced no problems. And, installing the new LCD panel cured it until a new image was burned-in.
I basically came to the conclusion that the iMac G5 system was a great computer if you don't need the power it provides. But, if you push the G5 to it's limits, then you'll likely have problems like I had.
But, there's no point in buying a computer at any performance level if you don't intend to use it's performance potential.
If I only intended to use the machine to a level that a 1 GHz machine would be sufficient, then why would I buy a 2 GHz machine. It would be a waste of money.
But, if I buy a 2 GHz machine, I will definitely expect that I can use the machine to it's potential without damaging it. If it cannot handle the work, then they shouldn't design it to perform the task.
Anyway, the local dealer was equally as skeptical as yourself. But, when he came out and saw the machine in person, he was equally as shocked as I was. I had my full audio setup right there on the desk still setup for him to see what I was doing.
Note this was not basic audio work. This was complete pro-level equipment feeding audio into the machine for manipulation. No USB equipment and consumer stuff.
Real mixers, pre-amps, tape decks, turn-tables, etc. fed into the computer through it's audio input port.

  • Sims 2 and other games on the intel imac?

Hi there just bought the Imac and am new at all this stuff. My girlfriend wanted to get Sims 2 , and i wanted to first check if it will run ok on the Imac with the intel processor?
    thanks!
    a

It not only runs (many legacy programs ran under Rosetta).
But with this upgrade, it runs under Intel on the Mac natively.

  • Just got the Intel Mini

Well, just hooked it up. Traded my 1.5 G4 (just bought it 10 days ago) for the Core Duo. Obviously had to pay the difference plus 10% restock, so we will see how it runs. Anyone who has questions, feel free to ask!!

Try loading UT2004 on it or maybe Doom3...yeah baby! That's the report I want.
I've been drooling over the idea of getting a new mini since we won't see an (Intel) TowerMac replace the PowerMac for a while.
I've always been a fan of the Mini, saw it in person at MacWorld 2005 when it was 1st released and I was wowed by its small package. Now it seems that it has a little power within that package.
Please load Call of Duty or one of the others mentioned, I'd love to see a report on one of those.
Enjoy your new Mini, I might join you in a month or so...

  • IM client for the Intel Mini

Hi all y'all. If I were to skip iChat(vid), what IM client works with this particular hardware. When I look for software downloads for this neato Mac I feel as though I have painted myself into a corner. I still have 10.4 but am not sure what gidgets work with this Intel chipset. Not all sights mention this hardware option when I am browsing my download choices. Mama uses AOL on her Dell and so have I in my older Macs. I bought this Mini in Dec and just haven't been home to play with it. When the jet lag is gone and I'm finished unpackin my bags I wanna make this my main MacChine. Gotta have a good IM program. (Bet your all gonna tell me to adjust and use iChat). TIA. Thales

Are you looking specifically for video chat ability or just IM in general. For video, I would stick with iChat. For regular IM, I would go with Adium. Adium allows you to log into all IM services, not just .Mac, Jabber and AOL.

  • Games on the intel Mac -what have you found that runs the best?

Personally, I'm rediscovering the original Unreal Tournament as that is running at over 70 FPS on the CD Mac. Call of Duty runs really well too and Halo is playable with and average FPS rate of 18. Halo got a little smoother with the boost to 1024 Ram.
Only thing that's annoying me is that my favourite little desktop game APEIRON X runs really jerkily despite using only 7% of the processor

yep the original unreal works very well but does not run at the resolution of the 20"screen just about to try the universal demo version that came out yesterday
any one else tried it ?

  • The Intel Mac Mini uses on-board graphics... how good are they?

I'm seriously considering getting an Intel Mac Mini and telling all my friends to get one, too. However, there's one problem - the graphics.
The whole reason I'd want an Intel Mac would be so that I could dual-boot into Windows Vista (when it comes out) in order to play the latest games.
How suitable are the on-board graphics for gaming? Would it be able to play Halo and Command & Conquer Generals well?
Basically, I want to know if it's the equivalent of a 64 MB graphics chip in speed, or if having on-board graphics makes it a bit slower. Does it have hardware acceleration? And is it suitable for smooth casual gaming at an average resolution?

I am very uneasy about finding integrated graphics in the new mini too.
When I first saw the new Mini website on Apple's website I was so excited "intel processor", "4 usb ports", "faster drives" but something was missing from the website; the "graphics" sub-category. I instantly wondering what was up with that, thinking right away obviously the graphics weren't good enough to brag about. I was right. On Apple's MacMini website, on the "Intel Core" sub-category page, bottom of the page, right side there's a weee comment on integrated graphics, "oh." was my only thought.
It's really disappointing to see integrated graphics in the new Mini. That AND the increase in price. The price of the Intel iMac dropped by $100 when it got introduced, but the Intel Mini's price goes up $100 upon introduction, further closing the price between the iMac and the Mini and making the iMac looking more and more attractice in terms of features-performance-price-value. I better run out and buy a Intel iMac before Apple removes the miniDVI-out port (which I'm predicting it will be removed in the next iMac revision)
Hopefully some Intel MacMini review tests in the coming weeks will reveal better-than-expected graphics performance.
I'm surprised nobody else has mentioned this but... doesn't anyone here see that Apple has given us a preview of what's to come by putting integrated graphics in the new Intel MacMini? -- Anyone? I'll tell you -- we're going to see the exact same integrated graphics in the upcoming Intel iBooks, that's what.

  • Can someone predict the spec's of the new Intel Mini's to current Mini's?

How much of a drastic or slight change will there be. If someone could just predict the spec's of the new intell's then I might just wait.. I don't want to get a product now that will be considerably outdated in about 5months now.. Will there be a big graphic power increase, processor power increase or what? Also, do you think that Apple will still have the Intel Mini's be at a great price? Will Intel Mini's be 500-700 USD's like the older PowerPC ones?
    Thanks!

  • Looking for upgrade articles on the G4 and Intel Minis?

I wrote a couple of upgrade guides, one for upgrading the G4 Mini and one for upgrading the Intel Mini. The G4 Mini upgrade guide is available here:
    http://mini.wiredby.com
And the Intel Mini upgrade guide is here:

Good luck in all your mods!

    Intresting thing:
If you type "isub" into the spotlight search, it will send you to the sound control panel.
If you are searching in the Mac Help, it will give you an instruction how to fix your problems (but of course can´t work it out). Very strange!

  • Running windows PC games on the Imac Intel

Is it possible to run windows based PC games on the intel duo? If so what do I need to do to get them to work?

You need to be running Windows, either by partitioning the drive with BootCamp and installing a copy of Windows, or by using a virtualization package of which the only one I'm aware is Parallels Workstation (that will also require installation of Windows).
Forum Tip: Since you're new here, you've probably not discovered the Search feature available on every Discussions page, but next time, it might save you time (and everyone else from having to answer the same question multiple times) if you search a couple of ways for a topic before you post a question.
