Gaming and Temperatures

So I am looking into purchasing my favorite gaming series newest addition to their line up: Civilization 5. I tried the demo and it works fine in boot camp on medium settings which is great. My issue is the temperature of my macbook pro.
I have a program in win7 side of bootcamp running a sensor that tells me the temperature of the cpu's and gpu. For some reason I cannot control the fan but it ramps automatically pretty well.
My temperature though usually its around 75 C. is running this hot for some time while playing bad for the unit? Any advice would be great because really thats my only issue for holding off buying the game as i dont wanna damage my mbook.
Also if any of you know a good program in win7 where i can control the fans while in boot camp would be great.

eww is right. 75C is nothing and it sounds like the fans are ramping up the way they should to control your temps during game play so you should not need a 3rd party app to control your fans. Nothing to be concerned about.
If you want a program that can monitor your temps and fan speed(s) on the Mac side try iStat Pro - you didn't mention if you had something on the Mac side for this.
Best.

  • Fan and Temperature Issues with certain apps

    Hi there
I have what seems to be an issue with the cooling on my 2011 Mac Mini where when running some apps the cooling fams for the CPU seem not to kick in.
To give an example I do a lot of online gaming and when playing LoTRO on my Mini when the CPU temp gets to around 78-80c mark the CPU fan ramps up to keep the CPU cool which I guess is normal however yesterday I was doing some audio recording / editing in Garageband and noticed the CPU temp was at 93c but yet the fans hadn't kicked in.
I did a bit of research and installed SMCFanControl to monitor what the CPU fan was doing. Again using LoTRO when the CPU got to around 80c the fans ramped up to around 4800rpm and the temperature lowered yet with Garageband even with the CPU at 91c the fan was only spinning at 1800rpm. I know 90c is still below the threshold of safe operation for the Core i5 2415M CPU (which is 100c) but not by much. This is a real concern for me the hotter the CPU runs the shorter its life will be. It is unfortunate that SMCFanControl is unable to directly control the CPU Fan in the 2011 Mac Mini
Can anyone out there can shed any light on why this is happening?

Thank you everybody for your sound advice - Normally John Hammer1 I would agree with you, if OSX can do a task then let it do it and not use 3rd party software, but however in this case I don't think OSX was doing a very good job at cooling the system. To use an analogy you wouldn't drive your car with the temperature gauge constantly near the red line as it would damage your engine. This is how my MM was running when editing (of which I do quite a lot) and having a computer constantly running near its thermal limits isn't doing it any good.
I feel (and have always felt) that my Mac Mini has been lacking in cooling and that whilst the MM is a pretty little computer its performance has always been hampered by its lack of cooling. I'd rather have a bit more noise from the fan and have a more efficient computer.
I have installed Fan Control 1.2 and so far it is doing its stuff ok. Like den.thed I'm a bit old school, I usually keep my Macs for around 4-5 years and I want this one to last.
Again thanks everyone for your advice.

  • We have an airport extreme wifi in house, but also want to set up a hardwired ethernet connection for gaming and streaming of netflix.  The computer only sees one or the other not both at same time.

We have a new iMac 2.9ghz and are running an airport extreme set up in house with several express entenders.  The problem is that our son is streaming netflix and doing on line gaming and hogging all the band width.  Time Warner tech suggested a hard wired ethernet connection to computer base sattion next to computer so that it can have direct conenction to internet.  After much fishing of wire the connection worked great, but the wifi connection for the house is gone.  I unplugged the ethernet connection and everything is fine.  I read the articles about adjusting network preferences, but the issue seems to be in the extreme not in the computer.  the connection goes from cable modem to extreme, from extreme to house and to hard wired conenction to other computer.  Do we need a splitter before the extreme?

No. Something else is going on.
Your son may be hogging all the bandwidth but your wireless network should never simply disappear. Moreover, if your son isn't doing anything the available bandwidth for other devices should remain unaffected.
I suspect that something is miswired, and from what you describe I suspect that link is between the Extreme and the "other computer".
The way to accomplish what you propose is
Modem > Ethernet cable to Extreme's WAN port
Extreme's LAN ports > wired Ethernet devices.
There should be nothing but an Ethernet cable linking an Extreme LAN port and any other wired device. If you run out of available LAN ports on the Extreme, you need to by an "Ethernet switch" - they are not expensive, but don't call it a "splitter" or you will only confuse yourself. The switch would be connected to one of the Extreme's LAN ports, and you would connect additional devices to it. You can also use one of your Expresses for that purpose, assuming it is the current generation model with two Ethernet ports.

  • What is best laptop for personal use ?? my requirement is gaming and whole day personal usage ?

am fed up for buying a new laptops ?

These would be okay for gaming and still stick under the 1000 buck mark
The thing I look for in a laptop (that I want to game on) is a discrete graphics card notably either ATI or NVIDIA ... if it says Intel Graphics i stay away from those... they just aren't going to handle gaming that well.
These laptops are intel based processors that I kinda lean toward these days - you may get better value out of an AMD based machine... I personally like intel a little better right now for processors.
Memory - I just look for 3GB and above.
these really only apply to Best Buy... other places are going to have different models

Im looking for a MacBook that is worth the money and decent for gaming and editing, any suggestions?
    There all so AWESOME!

Then you are best to get a Macbook Pro. Your real aim should be the graphics card.
You won't be doing really good gaming on a discrete graphics card sharing RAM.
Depending of coarse what games you play.
eg. card games / COD games.

Apple has not released a new model of iPod touch since the A7 processor was introduced. When Apple will, or indeed if they will, is as lllass said not something any of use here would know. We'll just have to wait and see.

  • MSI AMD 890GX and Temperature Monitoring

Bear with me if this is a silly question to ask, this is my first computer build so I have a lot to learn.
I'm wanting to get a 5.25 in bay temperature monitor and was hoping there might be a port or connector somewhere on the motherboard to give me the bios reading of the CPU and/or northbridge temperature to external hardware. I, obviously, have the 890GX board and the Athlon II 3X but before I try any overclocking I want to be able to see a true temperature reading.
I've looked at a few fan controllers and temperature displays that have probes for their readings but I'm not fully convinced that readings in the area of the CPU or northbridge would be adequate, safety-wise.
    Thanks

I have nothing against the BIOS readings, in fact that's what I'm interested in. My complaint about temperature probes is that its only going to give me a reading of the surrounding area rather then a direct reading of the cpu temperature.
I want to know if theres anyway to use one of the jUSB ports to connect to a piece of hardware to display the bios temperature readings. I'm sure this would involve a little bit (or a lotta bit) of coding to accomplish if its possible at all but I'd like to know if anyone has any information about hardware to do this.

  • Increased Power, Load and Temperature in Linux 3.4.X

    Hi,
After this morning upgrade, power consumption of my system has increased from 8-10W to 15-18W at idle and  15-18W to 25-35W while using flash. Their were lot of upgrade today including linux-ck. I get some innocuous boot errors and now am getting another new one.

OK!  Your comparison is _NOT_ a fair one.  You are comparing 3.3.7-1-ARCH to 3.4.1-2-ck.  You must compare 3.4.1-1-ARCH to 3.4.1-2-ck or you must compare 3.3.7-1-ARCH to 3.3.7-1-ck.
Here is a link (just for you) to the 3.3.7-1-ck kernel and headers:

Fasten your seatbelt as I suspect your problem is not with the the linux-ck kernel but with something in the 3.4 series...
    Summary:
    1) Compare 3.4.1-1-ARCH to 3.4.1-2-ck
    or
    2) Compare 3.3.7-1-ARCH to 3.3.7-1-ck
Please remove the 'linux-ck' from the title of your post if indeed it is not to blame.
EDIT: why are you not using the corex version of the headers and of the kernel?  They are a matched pair.

    Hello LochiMD,
there are sereral things you have to care about.
The best would be, you have a look on the following link:
Synchronize continuous Acquisition of Multiple Analog Input Devices
https://decibel.ni.com/content/docs/DOC-12182 (Have a look on the picture, especially left side)
You should use the VI DAQmx Timing (Sample Clock), samples per chanel and sample mode is necessary.
If you do this, your program should work.
    Best Regards,

  • The fluke 2625A I am still having problems arraying the channels and temperatures.

In the example program I canot array the channels and temperatures. All I can read is one channel at a time.

    Joey,
I took a look at this instrument driver, and it appears that there is not a built-in function that allows you to read multiple channels at the same time. You will need to have multiple subVIs read channels individually, then build those values into an array of all the temperatures. This is the only way I could find to get an array of your temperatures after my cursory glance of the driver.
Good luck with your application, and have a pleasant day.

  • Satellite L670-1JN - Fan activity and temperature

    Hello,
When my Satellite L670-1JN is not in sleep mode and when no application is running (only OS) with an ambiant temp 20C at wich temperaure approximately must be the processor?
At which temperature fan start and stop?
Power mode selected is normal with optimization of performance, with the power adapter.
    Thanks

Yes fan activity is control automatically but when my laptop is not in sleep mode and when no application is running (only OS) fan stop(30s) cpu temp increase from 36% to 40% and fan run(30s at 55%) temp decrease from 40% to 36%.
For this I used Health Monitor delivered with PC. Temps ig given in % so i can't know temperature in C.
Is it normal? ambiant temp is 20C.
    It's noisy.
I will prefer to have fan continuously on at lower speed.
Is it possible to change setting of fan and temperature except by changing the cooling method in Windows Power Management to battery optimized.
In this case noise increase fan stop(60s) cpu temp increase from 32% to 40% and fan run(60s at 90%) temp decrease from 40% to 32%.
My PC is newer I have not yet install other application so only OS is running.

  • Satellite X200-219 overheats while gaming and shuts down

Ok I originally lived in the UK, where I bought a Toshiba X200-219.
Since then I moved to the States, and have the laptop plugged into a surge protected extension cord, attached to plug converter.
Once the warranty expired on the laptop, I upgraded to 4GB of RAM, and switched out both hard disks to Seagate 320GB 7200rpm drives.
Now ever since I moved to the States, the laptop has been overheating, more and more frequently even *before* I upgraded the components; this has usually been happening whilst gaming. I have been regularly blowing out any dust that might have settled inside the vents with compressed air
But this time it's different. I was playing Red Alert 3, and it did it 3 times. When the laptop over heats, I have to remove the power cord and then reinsert it before switching it on. Except the final time I tried that, the laptop didn't start. There are absolutely no signs of life from the thing, even after cooling down for the past 2 hours. There aren't even any lights acknowledging that the power cord is plugged in. Oh and I've replaced the fuse so it can't be that (the battery is in the back in this instance)
In the UK the laptop ran at a normal temperature. Over here it was running hot to touch, and the fan was screaming but it was manageable.
It ran even hotter on the odd game I was playing but not whilst en/decoding movies.
Please don't let this become one of *those* threads where everything fizzles out and I don't get an answer. Any ideas please?
    Happy holidays folks
    Aseel

    Hi
Overheating is a serious issue because a high temperature can damage the internal parts.
The internal temperature increases to a higher level because all devices like CPU and GPU are running with high performance while gaming.
In such case the cooling module fans should rotate faster to ensure that the warm air would be blow away
In many cases the cooling modules cannot work properly because the dust and debris clog up the cooling grilles or there is not enough thermal grease between the cooling module and CPU or GPU.
Furthermore its not recommended using NON-Toshiba graphic drivers because such non Toshiba graphic drivers are not designed for the notebook usage and can lead to such overheating issues.
You should also ensure that there is enough free space around the notebook. This is important for properly fresh air circulation.
But of course an faulty cooling module could be also responsible for such overheating issues and in such case ONLY the ASP would be able to help you.
