Gaming consoles on Mac

hi,
I was just wondering if there's a way to use your iMac as a monitor for a playstation?
With Apple Tv etc, I'm sure there's probably a way of going it, but many forums seem to have conflicting ideas!

I can confirm that the elgato EyeTV works great. I have a hybrid (only USB dongle that plugs in the back of your mac.)
Have a first generation Intel iMac, works great for playing games. There's a coax or RCA connector for the elgato as well.
Apple TV is just that, it's like a console that connects to your TV to play videos. That's all it really does.

  • Can I use my 27" late 2013 model iMac as a monitor for a gaming console through some sort of input cable?

I just bought a 27" iMac for college and I was curious if it was possible for to use my iMac as a screen for a gaming console to forgo buying a TV.

If the fuction is not addressed in this Apple article:
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT3924
you can't do it. Target Dispaly mode is a Mac-to-Mac function, and then only with late-model computers.

  • Running Gaming consoles through iMac

I was wondering if it is possible to run an xbox 360 or any gaming console through my iMac, and if so what I need to get in order to do so.
    Thanks

I've heard this product mentioned before as a solution:
    http://www.elgato.com/index.php?file=products_eyetv250na
It mentions "Connect game console (zero latency game play - USB 2.0 only)"

  • Connecting gaming console. MoCA adapter or Router?

    Hello all,
I haven't really been able to find a definitive answer to this anywhere.  Currently, my FIOS setup has the routers/wireless transceiver in a bedroom at the front of the house.  I have a game console in the den at the back of the house.  I do not want to move the router, but I want to get the gaming console off of the wireless connection and hardiwred with some cat5.  There is a coax connection in the den, with a STB connected.  I'm considering getting a MoCA adapter to use at this location, so I can branch a cat5 off and maintain the coax for the STB.  Will this work?  I keep reading what indicates to me that the MoCA needs to be downstream from the router, but one or two site don't seem to say that.  So, can I simply install a MoCA adapter at the coax line in the den, split coax off to the STB and have cat5 for me console, and be happy?  Or would I need a secondary router at this location instead of the MoCA adapter, becuase the MoCA would need to be downstream from the router?
    Thanks in advance!

Their diagram shows a MoCA adapter at the router, with lines going through the house downstrem ... do these MoCA adapters work straight off the coax coming into the house? ...
You confusion is justified, in that the diagram you listed does not represent your system (as I understand it).  Note that in the diagram, the router is provisioned via Ethernet WAN.  In your home, you are using what's called "coax WAN."
Don't spend too much time with this unless your curiosity is aroused and you want to delve further.  Just realize that anywhere you have a coax connection in the building, you can add one of the adapter devices in question and also have an Ethernet connection at that same location.
Admittedly this takes some getting used to when one first encounters the Verizon or MoCA method.  The confusion arises because the coax sends different types of signals at different frequencies over the same wire.  What the adapter does is help separate these different signals for particular uses (TV, Internet, etc.).
I hope that hasn't made things more foggy.  Very shortly you will be happy with the proposed solution.

  • Gaming on the Mac

I want to get into gaming on the mac. I just brought the a logitech USB controller and have the old NES with some roms running on my system. I really wanna buy some sports or shooting games but I cant find any. I'd love if there was NHL games for the mac.
Please give me any suggestions. Much appreciated

if you run windows in bootcamp you are running the windows natively. that means the quality will be as good as your hardware can support. I only have a couple of games but they run excellent in bootcamp as near as I can tell. hard disk space is a different matter but you'll have to deal with that either way.

  • Question about points earned on gaming consoles

I am confused about how the gamer's club unlocked works.  The Best Buy site says that my Best Buy members get 1 point per dollar spent.  The Gamer's Club Unlocked details says you get points on gaming consoles.
I purchased an Xbox One Assassin's Creed bundle for $299.99 on 11/8/14 and 299 points are pending in my My Best Buy account.  That doesn't seem to me like I am getting any points for the console purchase; it seems like I am only getting points for the dollar amount spent in the store.  If this is the case, why even mention that the Gamer's Club Unlocked membership gives you points on gaming consoles?
I purchased a cell phone and received the Gamer's Club Unlocked membership on 11/8/14.  I was told the membership was effective immediately.  This seems to be the case, since I received the 10% bonus discount when I traded in a video game during the same visit.  I purchased the Xbox One Assassin's Creed Video game bundle with a free Xbox live gold membership on 11/8/14 during the same store visit.  I actually made three transactions: one to buy the phone/gamer's club unlocked membership, one to trade in the video game, and one to buy the xbox one console bundle.  The cell phone/gamer's club membership transaction happened first.
Should I have received additional points for buying a gaming console?

    Hi kre1997,
Regrettably, no -- Gamers' Club members do not earn any additional points for video game consoles. My Best Buy Elite and Elite Plus members still receive their respective bonus points for these items though, as do My Best Buy Credit Card holders for purchasing them using their card. For more information though I'd encourage you to check out the two pages:

  • Extending Network and Gaming Consoles

I have a airport extreme set up in my office. Downstairs I have 4 gaming consoles, which require fast internet speeds other wise it effects game play. The signal where 2 of my consoles are do not get great reception. So I know I can use an airport express, plug it in where I get reception downstairs and have it extend the range of my network.
However, I have 2 questions about this:
    1) I have my extreme set up for N and my gaming consoles are G. The extreme is backwards compatible, but will the same hold true if I add an Express to the network? Will my G consoles still work?
    2) In my head I think this would slow down the speed. I would think my console would have to go through an express, then the express sends up to my extreme, then finally out to the internet. Would adding an express slow the connection at all because now it has one extra point it travels through?
    Thanks,
    Andrew

The 802.11n AirPort Express Base Station (AXn) can be added to your network configuration to extend the wireless range of the 802.11n AirPort Extreme Base Station (AEBSn). If you configure the overall extended network for the "802.11n (802.11b/g compatible)" radio mode, your "g" game consoles should be able to connect.
    2) In my head I think this would slow down the speed. I would think my console would have to go through an express, then the express sends up to my extreme, then finally out to the internet. Would adding an express slow the connection at all because now it has one extra point it travels through?
The bottom line ... yes, extending the network and support for "g" clients will reduce the overall bandwidth available for the wireless network. If bandwidth performance is critical, you may want to consider switching to an all Ethernet-based solution.

  • Solution: Hercules DJ Console MK2 Mac Edition Installation Problems

    hi
if anyone has problems installing the hercules dj console MK2 MAc Edition under Leopard 10.5.0:
    Hercules:
A temporary solution to install today's drivers in Mac OS 10.5 (we will release soon a new installer for Mac OS 10.5) consists in:
    1) Display the installation package .pkg file (right click the file with Ctrl-click) and select ShowPackage Contents,
    2) Enter in Contents/Resource and delete the file InstallationCheck,
    3) Run the installation package again, and this time the installation will run OK in Mac OS 10.5.

    Welcome to Apple Discussions:
Since you say this happens with mail, and other apps, it's probably not related to your Hercules system directly.
When you run the Mac by itself, with everything else unplugged, do you get the spinning beachball much?
You may need to run the disk utility and repair the HD and the permissions.
It's also possible that some 3rd party SW you may have installed is causing the problem. Be sure all 3rd party SW is fully compatible with Leopard and has been tested with the latest versions.
Check your console logs for information about this, and also run the Activity Monitor to see if something is taking up a lot of CPU ticks.

  • HT3924 Can I use my 27" late 2013 imac as an external display for a gaming console?

If so, how would I set it up and how much would it cost me?

No, sorry, you can't. Pre-Thunderbolt iMacs could to this, but with Thunderbolt-equpped iMacs they can only be used as a screen for other Thunderbolt-equipped computers. No company has yet to come up with a converter that works with Thunderbolt Macs. The only way you could get video from a game console into your Mac would be via a video capture device and the inherent lag in such capture would, I think, make most if not all games unplayable.
    Regards.

  • Gaming on a Mac

I am in the process of buing a mac for the first time and was wondering if they were good for Gaming now that they are compatible with Windows software.

Here is a list of the top 25 games.
Gaming performance on a Mac will depend upon what graphic card you use and how much RAM you have.
With a new Mac Pro, you can have the best of both worlds. You could install Windows via Boot Camp and run any PC games or run Mac games via Tiger. SWEET!

  • Just wondering/ waiting when apple would churn out a gaming console

with the gaming industry being where it is right now... in my humble opinion Apple should also bring in there own technology and innovation to the gaming industry and revolutionise like they have the mobile phone arena...
just waiting for it to happen and for it to happen soon... what say you?

You are right this topic had nothing to do with the mac pro but did have something to do with hardware... so i thought i'd post it here as the topics are limited to what apple has alreaaady done... anyways... i am not talking about jumping in with another xbox or a ps3...
like i said they changed the whole mobile phone market with the iPhone's touch screen interface... so something along those line... either like motion sensing technology brought to gaming or something like that... well i hope they do think about this...

  • Intense gaming on current macs vs future imac rumors (buying now or not)

I am wondering if i should purchase the 2nd tier 21.5 (fully upgraded)in imac for my gaming needs for games such as world of warcraft. Or should i wait to the next refresh. I do not know much about the i3 processors that may or may not be found in the new imacs. Are they better for gaming and will most of the new spec updates (ie graphics cards, ram, etc) also be most likely be better for gaming. This will be my first mac so i am not sure how the bew releases usually effect the old design.
    Any help would be great.

It really depends on your definition of intense. World of Warcraft is quite old and not necessarily that demanding. IMO both iMacs should be fine for that game (with an advantage to the 27" because of the better graphics card).
Note that you can also configure the Core 2 Duo 27" with the 4850 card, though at that points it's only $150 less than the i5, or even $50 more if you upgrade either the processor (3.06 -> 3.33) or RAM (4 GB -> 8 GB).
    Some iMac benchmarks:
    http://www.barefeats.com/imi7g.html (2560x1440)
    http://www.barefeats.com/imi7g2.html (1920x1200)
But I agree with Dave that a PC would be better if the two following conditions are met:
    1) the primary use of the computer will be gaming;
    2) you expect that its primary use will remain gaming for at least several years.
If you're going to use the computer for gaming, you'll get better performance under Windows even on the iMac (via Boot Camp).
And a PC (and by that, I mean a tower) makes a lot of sense because it is upgradeable, unlike the iMac (only the RAM is easily upgradeable). This may be cheaper in the long run because you don't have to replace the whole computer at once, and some of the components can be easily moved to a new computer when you do replace it (e.g. graphics card, hard drives, monitor).
I disagree with Dave about intense gaming implying no object on cost (running demanding games for long periods of time might make you willing to spend good money on a powerful computer - but it doesn't magically grant you a no-limit budget). However, the iMac is not cheap and you can build a good tower PC (including a monitor) for $2000, that will easily match or exceed the iMac's gaming performance.
Not to mention that in order to run Windows on an iMac you'll have to purchase a separate Windows license (though depending on your needs the performance of WoW or similar games might be good enough under OS X).

  • Using Serial Port as Console (not Mac OS X Server)

Folks using other Unix-y operating systems, as well as Mac OS X Server, can use a terminal plugged into their machine's serial port as a console to access the shell. I've searched high and low for a way to do this with regular Mac OS X Leopard with no luck. None of the solutions for Linux/*BSD/etc... work.
    Any ideas?
(FYI: I'm using a USB to 9pin RS-232 cable. I've confirmed that my Mac can talk to the machine attached via this interface.)

I fixed it. It turns out that the Leopard -> Snow Leopard Migration screwed up the Subversion repository various credentials for user/group and other during the migration copy. Fortunately I had "cloned" my entire Leopard disk. I copied the cloned repository into the Snow Leopard disk and everything works. It looks like this was the fault of the Apple Migration process.

  • Gaming? On Mac

Gaming on mac is it worth buying mac to play hardcore gaming or a windows computer ?

For hardcore gaming, go for a Windows computer like an Alienware or any PC with a good processor and GPU.
Macs are not designed for games, but more for work (this is the reason that would explain the terrible overheating most Macs suffer while playing games). They do not include the latest GPU and they are not highly customizable like a PC, so they are not the best computers for gamers
