Gaming on Leopard or Windows XP

Hi
i have a macbook santa rosa and am putting xp and leopard on. I dont have any games yet but if I do will they run better on xp or leopard?
I have the x3100 graphics card so I assume I need to install the latest drivers to windows and leopard?
thanks

There would be no reason for the Mac to run a game faster than XP (provided you're talking about a game which has been developed for both platforms). XP video drivers tend to be more optimized than OS X video drivers and game developers who develop for both platforms tend to put a bit more effort into the XP versions as that is where their money is. And you can install Windows and run all of your Windows games natively on a Mac using BootCamp in Leopard. Gaming is less than ideal when using "emulators" (virtualization is the more accurate term... you are not actaully emulating anything). Running Leopards free BootCamp and using Windows via that method gives the best results for Windows gaming.

  • Can I install both Snow Leopard and Windows 7 on the same version of VMWare 5?

Even though I am running Apple OSX Mountain Lion 10.8.3 on my new 2013 iMac, I have just installed VMWare's "Fusion 5" so I can have Windows 7 installed on the "Fusion 5, for limited usage needs.
I also would like to have a running version of Snow Leopard available to run my large collection of original Lynda.com training DVD's and CD's ... which unfortunately, now only allow the Lynda.com GUI player to operate in (and up to) Snow Leopard (at least this is what the Tech folks at Lynda.com have told me).
Since Lynda.com is no longer producing any or their training programs on CD or DVD any longer, and because they have stopped supporting their training programs to run on Lion and above, I will have to have a version of Snow Leopard installed to run these training programs, and still be able to run them using the Lynda.com GUI player.
    So here's my dilemma:
    1.  Can I install both a version of Snow Leopard OS on my "VMWare "Fusion 5" .... along with a running version of Windows 7 on       the same "Fusion 5"?
    2.  Do I install only the Windows 7 on the VMWare, and find some other "device" to run a version of Snow Leopard off of?
    3.  Do I consider using "BootCamp", in conjunction with "Fusion 5", to get access to both Snow Leopard and Windows 7?
Has anyone had any experience installing BOTH a previous (older) version of Apple OSX  ... AND ... a Windows OS version on one installed version of VMWare "Fusion"?
    OR
Any suggestions on how to set up having access to both Snow Leopard and Windows 7 .... while keeping OS Mountain Lion as my main OS?

Thanks ... the "You have to purchase Snow Leopard Server" I knew about, and a few days ago I just ordered a copy from the Apple Store:
    Snow Leopard Server - Ordered at: 1-800-692-7753 ... OR ... 1-866-254-8313
I asked for Apple Snow Leopard Server (Model MC588Z/A (SLSVR)
    "Unlimited Client License"
It was around $25.50 (USD) with sales tax and shipping (NYS).
One thing though ... when you mention:  "you should make two virtual machines".
Not being too familiar with "Fusion 5" yet, Is setting up "two machine" all done under one installed version of "Fusion 5"?
Would you have "links" to any "Fusion 5" installation instructions/info for setting up the
"two machines" (one for Snow Leopard and one for Windows 7)?

  • 64-Bit and 32-Bit: Snow Leopard and Windows 7

    Hi All:
I will eventually be dual booting Snow Leopard and Windows 7. I have never used Boot Camp before and have several questions, including one related to Boot Camp.
First, when installing 7, will I need to format the 7 partition, presumably NTSF.
Second, given my MBP's 64-bit architecture, will I be able to run 64-bit 7. I am aware, of course, that not many programs are available in 64-bit for either platform. Also, I know that the Snow Leopard renditions of all, or most, of the iLife programs will be 64-bit.
Does Leopard (and will Snow Leopard) run 32-bit programs in an emulation mode similar to the way 64-bit Vista/7 run 32-bit programs. In this regard, I assume, which surely must be the case, that OS X is a 64-bit program.

    hi donv,
    i run win7rc1 via bootcamp 32bit on mbp 17" 3.06ghz
and same, but 64bit on imac 3.06ghz.
    all works perfect, also apple's keyboard (brightness+-/sound +-/keyboardbcklight +-/eject ..
format is ntfs; backupable with winclone, also now (i have cloned from ssd to ssd).
apps run also in emulation, but where specified drivers are needed (e.g. for flashing ci-cards) 32bit are a must (therefore i have 32bit on my mbp).
partly i have boot camp 3.0 drivers (snowleo) in the mbp ..

  • Failed upgrade on snow leopard and windows 8 on bootcamp

I'm using macbook pro early 2011 and using snow leopard and windows 8 on bootcamp. After updating to the latest version of snow leopard, I upgraded to Mountain Lion. On the end of the installation, the installer/bootloader can't boot the mac OS or Win 8 bootcamp. I tried using option key only recovery partition can be boot. Also I've tried reinstall from command-R menu, but the installer can't find the mac partiotion.
I tried using disk utility from recovery menu but it says "invalid BS_jmpBoot in..." Verify or Repair has failed successfully. I think the partition information is mismatch or can't be read by bootloader.
I have put the problematic harddrive to external case, using it as external drive and put an unused harddrive and install snow leopard. When I plugged in the external drive the os won't load/mount the drive/partitions. I've tried it on linux, the mac partition can be mounted but the win 8 bootcamp still can't be access.
How can I recover the partiotion or data on the win 8 bootcamp partition? Thanks for the help.

Windows 8 is not supported in Boot Camp. To get back to a supported configuration, boot from your installation disc and partition the internal drive with the default choices (wiping all data on the drive.) Then restore the OS X startup volume from the last Time Machine snapshot or other backup you made before trying to upgrade. You should then be able to upgrade to 10.8. If you wish, run Boot Camp Assistant and create a Windows 7 (not 8) installation.

  • Problem Connecting to Shared Printer on Leopard from Windows XP

    Hey guys,
Just installed Leopard yesterday, and I have a Canon PIXMA MP160 printer connected via USB.
I have set the printer to be Shared, and enabled Printer Sharing in the Sharing preferences.
However, when I try and connect to the printer from a Windows XP laptop, it says: Access Denied, Unable to Connect.
I imagine that this is because I would have provide a username / password combo in order to access the network resources on my Leopard machine. I just can't figure out how to send the credentials, or disable the login necessity if needs be.
If this isn't the problem, or if it cannot be fixed then the alternative is to connect the printer to my router, which shares it via SMB. Now that's fine when I want to connect to it from Windows, but I can't figure out a way to set it up on Leopard.
The MP160 driver that comes with Leopard isn't marked as "Modern" which, according to the documentation means that it cannot be used to install IP or Windows Shared printers.
So my question is, to sum up, is there a way to fix the access problem when trying to access a shared printer on Leopard from Windows, and is there any way I can install and use the printer from Leopard while its shared from my Router via SMB?
    Thanks in advance.
    Edit:
I just thought it would be helpful to say that I'm able to connect and browse through SMB shares from Windows Systems, and I'm able to connect and browse through shared volumes on Leopard from Windows. It's just the printing that's not playing fair.

I had Bonjour for Windows working on two XP machines before I upgraded to Leopard. After that when the Bonjour printer would not work I deleted it from the XP machines and re-ran the Bonjour Setup App. It can find the printer every time, but it will not finish and will give me an error instead.
I've also verified that I have Printer Sharing turned on and the printer is specifically set to be shared. I'm out of ideas.
Has anyone heard reports of Bonjour 1.0.4 not working with Leopard or just being buggy under similar circumstances? If that's not the problem, then I must be missing something. Suggestions welcome.

  • What are the minimum hardware requirements to install both MAC OS X Snow Leopard and Windows on a Mac

    Hi,
I want to install both MAC OS X Snow Leopard and WINDOWS on a same PC. Is it possible..then mention the minimum Hardware support to install both Operating Systems on a PC. I am waiting for relevant reply from Apple Support Team.
                                            Thank You.

I am waiting for relevant reply from Apple Support Team.
Then you'll be waiting a long time. This is a user to user support site hosted by Apple. The Apple Support Team doesn't respond to posts here.
For Snow Leopard, you need an Apple computer with an Intel processor of any flavor. Here are the specs from the Apple Store:
    System Requirements
Mac computer with an Intel processor
    1GB of memory
    5GB of available disk space
    DVD drive for installation
You'd have to contact Microsoft to find out what specs its OS requires, but I imagine the above would cover it.
Also note that Snow Leopard is only licensed to run on Apple branded equipment.

Does any one know the network setting tutorial on the power Mac G5 Leopard to Windows XP pro. I can see windows XP from mac Mac, but I can not connect to Mac from my Windows machine. I had no problems with the settings when I had Tiger.

Did you enable Windows sharing on the Mac? If you have, but still don't see your Mac, type the following into the address bar of windows explorer:
    \macname
where macname is the name of your mac. It can't contain spaces.

  • Unable to bind MacBook Pro (running 10.6 - Snow Leopard ) to Windows Server 2003 domain

Hi there, I've been working on this problem for a few hours now (and a few hours last Thursday) and don't feel I'm getting anywhere, so I'm reaching out for help....
My organisation has just purchased a new MacBook Pro, running Snow Leopard (OSX 10.6) and as a Technical Support Engineer I have been asked to configure it for an end user.
I am currently trying to join it to our corporate domain, which is a Windows Server 2003 domain operating at the Windows Server 2003 Native domain functional level.
The MacBook is configured to use DHCP, and has been assigned valid IP address, DNS servers etc by the DHCP server. It can resolve all names on our network, including the names of our domain controllers. When I use nslookup to resolve the name of the domain "my_domain.local" it returns a list of DC's on the domain, which would indicate to me that name resolution is working perfectly. It is using our primary DNS server, 'Ponus' to resolve these names - Ponus is also the Domain Controller in this site.
To attempt to join the MacBook to the domain I have created a computer account for it on the domain, in the Computers container. I have gone into System/Library/Core Services and run the Directory Utility.
In the directory Utility I have ticked Active Directory and clicked on it to edit. The 'Forest' field is greyed out and set to 'Automatic', in the 'Domain' field I have entered my_domain.local, which is the FQDN of my domain. I click Bind and when prompted enter my Domain Admin username and password (in the 'Create Computer Account in:' field it displays correctly as CN=Computers,DC=my_domain,DC=local.)
When I click OK I get the message: Invalid domain. An invalid Domain and Forest combination was specified. You should enter a fully qualified DNS name for the domain and forest (e.g., ads.company.com).
I have attempted writing the domain as my_domain.local, my_domain.local., MY_DOMAIN.LOCAL and MY_DOMAIN.LOCAL. but I get the same error each time. I have checked and rechecked DNS is resolving OK, and cannot see why it cannot find the Domain and Forest from the FQDN that I am entering. Even so I tried creating records in the hosts file on the MacBook to point to the main Domain Controller at this site (Ponus) but this didn't change anything.
I have seen a few people report the same issue online but the responses tend to fizzle out before anyone gets to the bottom of it. I have seen some indication that people with an understore (_) in their domain name, or with a .local domain name may experience issues with joining Mac hosts, however these details are very vague and if true there must be a workaround.
If anyone could help me with this I would greatly appreciate it, I'm running out of time to complete this work and have run out of things to try.
I have an inkling that this is due to the Mac for some reason not reading the SRV records for the DCs and LDAP in DNS, or to do with the Mac looking only at one SRV record (ie. there is one for a new DC that we haven't deployed yet), not being able to reach this and giving up, but I'm clutching at straws really with my limited knowledge of the Macs process for joining the domain.
    Many many thanks,

    Hi there,
A simple suggestion , please make sure both MacBook Pro clock and the server clock are the same meaning the hour/Min/ sec both should match. A least difference of 3 seconds is fine.
I had faced this problem in many place and only solution was to match the time and it will bind immediatly.

  • Remote Desktop Connection won't work from Leopard to Windows XP

    Hi, folks:
I'm unable to connect to my work XP computer via my home iMac (Leopard 10.5.7) using Microsoft's Remote Desktop Connection for Mac. The XP settings are correct, I'm connected on my work network VPN, and I don't believe I have any router firewalls causing the problem --- the reason I know this is because I also have an MacBook running Tiger (10.4.11) and it has been connecting to my work PC without any problems. So, this must be a Leopard firewall setting?
As far as that goes, on my iMac I've got Screen Sharing, Remote Login and Internet Sharing turned on. Again, work network VPN is on.
I'm getting this error from Remote Desktop Connection:
"The Mac cannot connect to the Windows-based computer
    This problem can occur if:
    - The Windows-based computer is not set up to accept remote connections
    - The Windows-based computer is not turned on
    - The Mac, or the Windows-based computer is experiencing network problems
Try connecting to the Windows-based computer again, or contact your administrator"
Anyone know of a fix? I'd greatly appreciate it!
    Thanks.

What Firewall setting do you have on your Mac? Try setting it to allow all connections. At least as an experiment.
Do you have any Proxies set in System Preferences -> Network -> Advanced -> Proxies? If yes, then is it possible that "Bypass" list is not covering the XP system.

  • USB gaming mouse unrecognized by Windows 7 Pro (via BootCamp)

    Hey,
I bought a Zowie EC1 Gaming USB mouse. But when I plug it into my MacBook Pro 15" running Windows 7 Pro (via BootCamp), then the mousewheel flashes blue shortly for 1 second or so, and the driver installation process starts. After awhile it says hardware unsuccesfully installed. And when I re-plug the mouse in the same USB port it says unrecognized.
I think maybe it's just some buggy drivers? Anybody experienced something similar with other mice maybe? Or know how I solve this problem.
    Kind regards,
    Simon

I looked around on the web and read a bit about your Zowie EC1. It's a very nice mouse that I need to put on my Christmas list
But it seems that it should be recognized by Windows as a normal USB mouse and install generic drivers. I have a couple of questions:
    1) Are there any Windows Updates for your hardware waiting to be installed?
    2) Do you have all the Apple Boot Camp drivers installed? Apple just released 3.3 if you're not on Lion (which is 4.0)

    Dear CarlosGBA,
So when you put 2 computers of your network in WORKGROUP in place of DOMAIN the 38 others works fine ? Strange ?
I have about 15 computers, some are already in workgroup other are linux smb other MAC, the data server are MAC OS X SL, the problem appear for all windows machines, I have try to dissable NTLMV2 and Kerberos since it is probably the faulty element with opendirectory, but always without success !
I don't know what I can do to trouble shout, I hope next release 10.6.3 come soon and correct about all SMB problem ! Probably a dream only ! Since I ask my self if Apple want to correct something andwhy is this problem let without solutionso long ! For a company it is a big problem.I suppose that Apple never read this forum and never answer our problem ! May be I should contact the support phone to be helped !

  • Sharing iTunes Library between Snow Leopard and Windows 8

    My setup:
    2006 Macbook, running Snow Leopard
Microsoft Surface Pro, running Windows 8 Pro
    Toshiba 1TB portable external HDD
I am using my external HDD to host all of my media content, including my iTunes library. When I want to take advantage of the portability of my Surface Pro, I connect my external HDD to my MacBook, and use my MacBook as a media server. When it is connected this way, all of my music is in my iTunes Library. When I use my MacBook to listen to my iTunes library, all of my music is there. The problem is when I connect my external HDD directly to my Surface Pro, some of my music is missing. This is inconvenient because it leaves me without the ability to add new music or delete music from my iTunes library unless I am working on my MacBook. I have already tried ripping my iPod, which actually has ALL of my music on it, and transferring it directly to my external HDD. When it is connected to my MacBook directly, it looks like that actually worked. However, if I connect it to my Surface Pro or use my MacBook as a server and connect to my external as a network drive, the music is missing. Am I missing something obvious? Has anyone else had this problem?

Sounds like some of your music on external drive is in file format that Windows can't read. Am I missing something?
