Gaming on the Mega

I've got a Mega 180 and recently put a ATI 9600XT into it. I don't play very many games on it as I haven't had it very long. Anyways, my first attempt to play a game was Rome: Total War. Probably not the best option based on the number of problems the game has. Anyways, I wanted to share the experience on what I had to do to get it running so that others didn't have to learn the long way.
1) I had to set the card to 4x AGP mode.
2) I had to turn AGP fast-writes off
3) I have to exit out of my MSI software before playing
I'm not sure if I need to close down every app before playing the game. However, I do know that if I leave the monitor running that controls the LCD I can not get the game to work.
I'm sure this work isn't required for every 3D game but I would guess it is necessary for more than just Rome. Now I need to control the heat. Proc reaches above 50 degrees.

1+2) I find this a bit strange, are you using the latest catalyst drivers ??
3) Is a big confirm, never leave any MSI app running whilst playing games, esp. the pc-alert app.
Proc 50 is not bad, mine goes up to 62 when playing 3D games.

  • Creative Gaming Audio & the EAX2 R

Partially as a response to this thread about "Onboard sound versus X-Fi review/shootout?"...?http://forums.creative.com/creativel...message.id=430?... this post further expands the subject of on-board sound on to gaming & continues deeper into the needs/wants of a "gameaudiophile".
[color="#ff6600">- GG's!?Even though the link below points to an old article / review from 2005 03 07, it might give people here some guidance in finding their temporary way back to the still not so old HDA on-board sound until Creative's driver technologies see a brighter day. http://www.behardware.com/articles/5...ition-dio.html?-------------------------------------------------------------- - Now I'm a pretty frequent gamer who have come to rely heavily on Creatives post EAX2 systems in regards to great positonal audio, doppler effects etc. As we all know, EAX on the higher notes is TBA & ETA unknown for the time being. This gives us time to fool around with eventual on-board stuff. So I did & let me tell you that the Sensaura 3DPA, which is implemented on the CMI-9880 (on my ASUS P5AD2 Premium MOBO) does not come close to a love affair. Setups for up to 7.CH is at your disposal, virtual modes as well. 6 Ds3D voices , EAX-2 & Jack Sensing... It's all working as in runnig but just doesn't reach any particular high.
[color="#ff6600">Gaming Audio & the EAX2 Roof? Some of you might wonder what my nit-picking about EAX is about. You might not be a gamer. The regular mp3-cowboy regards EAX to be merely a bug. You simply have to hear it in a game, preferably an online-shooter where picking up enemy footsteps & sounds etc are the difference between knowing where to turn your sights or getting it in the back. It's about anticipation as well as immersion. The EAX3+ modes make a huge difference in those regards. For many gamers, the importance of audio quality & positioning might not be clear when first starting out with a game. But as they grow into it, get accustomed with their surroundings, they start to notice & realize how important audio really is. Many of my friends who I have lured into gaming over the years have often been astonished by the difference between on-board audio solutions & the Creative addon cards. Then amazed about what miracles a good headphone setup can do. The real jaw-droppers were the higer EAX modes. EAX became their "eyes on their back". To put it bluntly: Gamers are a new but different breed of audiophiles. We are not content with movie-style directional audio alone, we also demand depth, distance, elevational sound possibilities. True 3D audio. EAX has been the best answer so far as to keep us somewhat happy. No EAX, no satisfaction. Part of the problem is that we have always been trusting Creative to keep deli'vering, and they probably will. But what if, just if, we would like to step out & try something different for a change. Just to know that some other company might do it just as good for us? Well, the options aren't many & they're limited.

    ps.
Anyone running the AuzenTech X-Meridian 7. card for instance? I understand the X-Mer being very high quality as far as everything besides gaming is concerned. Reading a lot of reviews, primary concern would be the "higher than X-Fi" FPS hit - what is your real-world experience outside of the constructed RightMark 3D tests? Audio positioning / doppler? How does the Dolby Headphone, Dolby? Pro Logic IIX, Dolby? Digital Li've, DTS? Interacti've & DTS? Connect technologies hold up against their Creative counterpart EAX3-5, CMSS/CMSS2 etc? IMHO, EAX2 alone is not good enough & does not cut it when it comes to fast FPS-games. Maybe some of you have had first-hand experience with the Razer Barracuda AC- card instead? The reviews tell me a story about "nice first try" for Razer, considering it's their first shot at serious gaming audio. Positional is mentioned to be somewhat over optimistic etc. As I understand it, their "EAX3-and-up-killers" are called Razer Fidelity?, Razer Enhanced Sonic Perception? (ESP) architecture and Razer?s 3D (720?) Positional Gaming Audio Engine?. Any hardcore gamers tried it's?Of course, both the X-Mer & AC- utilize EAX2, but as I mentioned.., that's an obstacle to get around for the companies serious about getting gamers to migrate from Creative. It's simply not enough for some of us The substitute technologies must at least come very close of making up for the lack of EAX3-5. Many reviewers barely touch the gaming audio aspects of the tested card, simply stating that "it's adequate enough" (?!!). Well.., that might not hold true for those of us who expect to invest several more hours on virtual battlegrounds than playing mp3's or mixing etc.Happy hunting!

Danke Cat.., but it's pretty much just a pure love letter to honey EAX, who happens to be sorely missed by my big rig if you manage to take notice? - Not dangerous at all really since Creative will hopefully outperform the competition anyhow in the end, right? I'm counting on it anyway. In general, these OS-shift problems currently stirring up are most likely a passing thing; taking audio & audio technology more into the spotlight than anything else. - Which is a good thing for Creative as well (handled nicely), promise, & so is acknowledging / discussing differences between soundcards.
If you are referring to the reviews as inhibiting some sort of advertisement character then yes, advertisement leaning towards Creative since none of the other products have been able to outperform any of the Creative cards when it comes to the topic of gaming ^^ as of yet. Many also use Creative cards as reference in tests, link to & publish Creative specifications etc. Does not necessarily have to be a one way street. Or do you perhaps mean that it's not ok to namedrop? Or hyperlink? Ahwell.., I should have read the manual I guess.
As marshall_lai also kindly pointed out, there is also a huge business opportunity helping lesser incorporated to implement EAX+ & technologies in a proper manner!
Anyway.., Parental Advisory & brainpower recommended in any reply & Enjoy!

  • How to enable USB 2.0 on the MEGA 651 - found a way

    Very important question...
How did you guys enable the USB 2.0 ports? I plugged a device in the front ports today, only to be told that there are no USB 2.0 drivers installed...
The MSI CD that came with the MEGA only has drivers for W2k, and my XP installation won't recognize them... (kind of idiotic, considering MSI strongly advocates using the 651 with XP !?) BTW, I have WinXP SP2 ...
*edit* I figured out the procedure - allow Windows Update to operate automatically, reboot, make sure you've enabled USB 2.0 in BIOS, then when everything's up and running again, just plug in again a 2.0 device... the machine will do the rest... just don't do what I did... on the first try, I realized all this time I had my USB 1.1 keyboard plugged in... :D
Also, how did you get the modem to be seen/properly installed by the system? No conflicts with the other devices?

Welcome to Apple Discussions. In fact, welcome to the Discussions for the new iMac Intel Core Duo!
You may get a better/quicker response from folks with a Mac like yours.
    Here is a link to the correct forum for your post;

However, I do not believe what you are asking is possible. You should have 2 older USB ports, version 1.0 I think.

  • New BIOS for the MEGA.

We need one......for a number of reasons.
We need Prescott support, so the Celeron D would be an option. Northwood Celerons are getting scarce since they're out of production. My MEGA 651 could easily handle a slightly hotter Celeron....say 2.4 D. Most boards will handle Prescotts with only a BIOS upgrade. I have no reason to suspect otherwise with these MEGA boards.
My MEGA 651 has no option in the BIOS to adjust/change/turn off the fan control circuit. I would like to use Speedfan to control fan speeds.....but cannot. The board's own controller and the Speedfan program conflict, causing unstable fan operation. Most boards using auto-fan control let the user adjust the operation. The mega BIOS could be  up-graded to do so.
I'd like to see some FSB adjustment in the BIOS....more than 100/133.
There are many improvements a new BIOS could offer....at very little cost to MSI.  Maybe Doctor Stu could use some of his clout to get one written.

    i don't have any clout
the 651 is an old model, so i doubt if we'll see any updates from MSI now, seeing as they will be pushing the new 865PRO now
unfortunately i also believe that the lack of prescott support is down to the SiS 651 chipset used, rather than MSI themselves

  • Which is better, the Hip-E, or the Mega PC Series?

A new computer was released last week that takes aim directly at kids.  It's called the Hip-E, and you can check it out here:  http://www.hip-e.com
So, the question is, which do you like better the Mega PC or the Hip-E.  (assuming both work perfectly per specificaions)

The specs for the Hip-E are here:  HIP-E Specifications
And here is a link for the video card, looks like it's an ATI 9700:  M11 Video Card
In regards to price, don't forget that Hip-E is shipping with a LCD based monitor, which isn't cheap.  Not that I'm advocating it, personally I don't like the design of the Hip-E.

  • Gaming on the Mac

I want to get into gaming on the mac. I just brought the a logitech USB controller and have the old NES with some roms running on my system. I really wanna buy some sports or shooting games but I cant find any. I'd love if there was NHL games for the mac.
Please give me any suggestions. Much appreciated

if you run windows in bootcamp you are running the windows natively. that means the quality will be as good as your hardware can support. I only have a couple of games but they run excellent in bootcamp as near as I can tell. hard disk space is a different matter but you'll have to deal with that either way.

  • What AGP video cards work with the MEGA PC

    Hi,
I am a newbie to this forum and a new owner of a Mega PC651.  I will be configuing it with the following:
    512 MB DDR 2100 RAM
    Celeron 2.4Ghz CPU
    Digital Research Technologies DVD+-RW/+-R
I want to play 3D games like C&C Generals with the system but am afraid that the SIS651 will not support them.
I have a ATI 9700 All-in-wonder Card in my son's computer but am concerned about heat generation in the Mega PC after reading several reviews. Also, I think that he will be very angry if I steal his card.
Can anyone recommend a moderately priced Video card MSI or other that will fit and will not cause any heating problems?
    Thanks,
    Charlie G

Windows XP supports up to AGP 8x.
I have a 9600 pro at the moment. I don't think that VGA silencer will work - if it takes up the PCI slot, then there will be nowhere for the cooler to draw air from because it will be pressed up against the case.
I am currently running my 9600 pro without any additional cooling and it seems to be doing ok. I did have a unit somewhat like this:
    http://www.frozencpu.com/cgi-bin/frozencpu/slf-01.html
It definately helped the cooling but the noise began to get to me. I recently sorted out my CPU cooling problems and so the main source of noise was my system exhaust above. I have taken it out and have been playing several high graphics games with no problems yet.
As for only supporting up to 4x, the 9600 pro will not be dragged back much. When it gets to the point that games require more than 4x speed to pass full detail for a decent framerate, the 9600 pro will start to struggle anyway. You will have a slight performance decrease, but nothing that will turn a game from being playable to un-playable. I would have bought a better card but the 4x speed would limit the cards actual power so there wouldn't have been any point.

  • 12 Pages of info for the Mega 865

Found a great site that has a lot of info on the Mega 865.....12 Pages infact
    http://www.xbitlabs.com/articles/mobile/display/msi-mega-865.html
Hope this is useful in answering a few questions about this unit.

    Eric,
I'm having exactly the same problems and have also tried all of the suggestions proposed on the forums/help desks ... nothing helps.
To answer your question directly: I haven't been able to publish without a problem when using iWeb 1.1!
iWeb 1.1, I'm afraid, is a shameful excuse for a web publishing application.
Apple has proven that they can deliver quality software and hardware, but iWeb 1.1 is not a good example in this area.
The real problem is that iWen has the promise of a great application from a great company, but I'm currently stuck, waiting for the next update, because I neither have the time nor the patience to deal with this ruin. Thank goodness that I have nothing crucial that depends on this application.
I hope that a future update will fix, not only all of the most obvious bugs, but also some of the other problems with iWeb.
    1) Memory consumption is out of control. Just loading my site and looking through it sends the memory usage into the stratospheric 600-700 MB, in one case it went over 1 GB.
    2) The User interface in some cases has a rather strange behavior. By this I mean: What is the deal with the 'Preparing to publish' window? Why does it pop on top of everything else?
    3) Performance is appalling. Why does it take minutes before you even begin to publish the smallest of changes. (then have the publish process fail anyway)
Let's hope that the problems with iWeb are not indicative of problems with the web-services on the .mac side.
    Regards and all the best.

  • Gaming on the stock 7300GT

So what’s it like gaming on the stock 7300GT under BootCamp? Do HL2 and BF2 look ok?
I can’t afford a 1900XT right now but I’m still seriously considering buying a Mac Pro. I haven’t played HL2 since I was a Windows user a year and a half ago. I switched to Mac to use Final Cut Pro (and because I was getting tired of maintaining my PC).
I’d like to play Counter Strike Source and Battlefield -- I don’t demand perfect performance. I have always gamed on mid-level PC’s, so I can accept a little video card lag here and there, as long as it’s not so slow that it makes me play the game badly. You know, never get headshots, bump into walls, friendly fire…
Would you say that the stock card is good for gaming, or is the ATI card the only one any gamer should consider?
    1.8 Dual   Mac OS X (10.4.8)

The 7300GT is a pretty capable card even compared to the 7300 versions on the PC. For older games, it runs pretty well (counter-strike, hl2) at medium resolutions (1280x1024 being the max). But, if you go higher, or try to start getting performance out of the card for newer games it just dies. The 1900 is so much faster it isn't even funny. If you plan to play any newer games (GTR2, Oblivion, FEAR, Battlefield (doesn't it have pretty steep requirements?) get the 1900.
I decided to go old school and check out Doom 3 again. On an older PC with a 6800GT and dual core Athlon I was getting 30 or so fps at 1280 res with medium settings. This is about the max I got with the 7300 in the new mac (using boot camp). Dropped in a 1900 and cranked up the settings to Ultra (which at the time of release Carmack said it would take many years for a card to handle the requirements of Ultra and a min of 512MB of video was essential --- I had never seen it run in Ultra mode), anyway dropped in the 1900, ultra setting with everything maxed, widescreen 16:10 1900x1200 resolution and getting 60FPS solid. This game caps the fps without hacking it, so I'm sure it's higher, but the point is it's non-stopped maxed. Counterstrike on the 1900XT, I was getting 100+ FPS at 2560x1600 res with everything maxed!
Hopefully this chart will link. If it doesn't go to Tom's Hardware, click on graphics and displays | vga charts | April 10 Interactive VGA charts. Select ATI x1900 XT R580 from dropdown 1, Nvidia 7300 GT TC G73 from dropdown 2, pick a game and resolution and see the performance comparison between all the cards. Your 2 selected cards show up in blue. For Oblivion at 1280 the ATI does 93FPS, the Nvidia does 23FPS. For Prey at 1600 it's 50FPS for the ATI, 11FPS for the stock Nvidia. Booyah!
    http://www23.tomshardware.com/graphics.html?modelx=33&model1=548&model2=532&char t=210
The real question is, "Should I get the 1900 and if I spend the extra money will I see a difference?"
If you plan on playing games. Oh, heck yeah. Splurge. You won't regret it.

  • Unfortunatly the Mega 180 has to go :(

Unfortunatly I have had to get rid of my Mega 180 after only 1 day of ownership.
The PSU blew and dabs who I bought it off wont send out a new one and no one at MSI uk seems to care :(
Normally a psu going would not put me off a system I would just get a new one. But with the events that have happend it has show me how awfull the MSI UK support is.
I also have a lot of worries about this system once it is out of warranty as no one seems to sell any parts and it is nigh on impossible to get a response from MSI.
I dont want this to appear as one of those "I am leaving" threads as I am truly sad that I have had to get rid of it, it was a great machine when it worked. If MSI actually sold the parts to repair the system and their support was better I would DEFINATLY be keeping it.
I have opted for the AOpen XC EZ18 cube which is of a similar spec but without the nice screen/radio etc.
This board provided me with a lot of help while I had my system and I am truley greatful. Thanks all!!!
I am truely sad to see this system go :(
    James

    Hi
Firstly the system was running fine, then I noticed that the 3.3v line was going up to 3.9+ then as it was getting hotter it just cut out and blew the fuse in the plug!!
A new power lead later it did the same thing after a couple of hours.
I personaly think it was a dodgy PSU and it seemed that as the case got hotter it just died.
The second time round it killed the PSU well almost, it was strange, the radio function worked but as soon as you tried to boot the pc the fan went round once then stoped and it didnt boot.
I tried a different PSU and it booted fine its also worth noting the the other psu (just a standard ATX one) did let the radio function normally I thought I would mention this as people have been asking and some have been saying that it needs special connectors etc.
I am sad that the box has gone back but now I have an Aopen XC Cube EZ18 and it works a treet. The PSU in it is only 220W but it is half the size so there is loads more space inside. and it runs idle at about 45'c even when I push it, it only seems to go up to about 50'c I miss the radio and nice LCD tho :( apparently this new box has some kind of juke box mode where you can boot while pressing a key on the keyboard and enter a mode much like the one on the mega for playing CD's + MP3 Cd's allthough as with the mega the documentation is awfull and I cant seem to work out how to do it.

  • R9 290 Gaming - MSIGamingApp: The platform does not support this application

    Hey guys,
    I have a MSI R9 290X Gaming 8G and can´t use the gaming app.
Whenever I try to run the app, I get an error: The platform does not support this application
So I guess I have the same problem as the dude in that thread:
    https://forum-en.msi.com/index.php?topic=179659.0
He had the same issue with the R9 290X Gaming 4G. The problem was, someone flashed a sapphire vbios on his new card.
So can someone check the attached vbios rom, whether it is the right one for my card and not also a sapphire rom or something else?
    Thanks and regards.

I seem to have the same problem using the Live Update App itself. My card is MSI R9 270X Gaming and I use Windows 8.1 64bit.

  • Gaming on the MBP or MB?

    Hello everybody.
First I would like to say that I am by no means a huge "gamer." I have just been waiting for several years to have a computer (laptop) that will be able to run a game or two. For example, maybe Battlefield 2...I'm really not sure, I just want the possibility. Sorry, to get to my question, how would playing these games on the MB be? Do my hopes justify to upgrade to the pro? If it helps, I would most likely get the top of the line MB (probably not black) or the bottom level MBP, but with 1 GB of RAM I think. Thanks for any help or insight.

I have not even seen many gaming benchies for the Intel 950 because games are just really not the target market. I have included a link here showing the Intel 950 performance in Half Life 2 if that helps any. It is basically getting its butt kicked by a bunch of graphics cards long gone from the market.

Edit: found what I was looking for earlier..a list from Notebook Reviews from lowest to highest in terms of gaming performance.
    n order of performance:
