Gaming on the new iMac

Hey guys,
(sorry if this has been asked 1000 times before, i went back pretty far and didnt see an answer)
First time poster here. For starters, I'm a game designer and digital artist whose fed up with PCs. I know macs aren't necessarily made for gaming, and that a gaming PC would cost a bit less, but I've had way to many problems with my last PC rigs crashing, melting, and frying. No fun.
Anyways, Im considering buying the i5 or i7 27" quad-core w/ the 1GB ATI card iMac. I currently have a MacBook Pro sporting an nvidia 9600M GT w/ 256 mb dedicated ram. Up until now, I've been able to handle most games on high or medium settings using Bootcamp with Windows 7, so I've been very pleased with how well this little guy has done, which does give me hope with the iMac. As a benchmark for all you gamers out there, I can run StarCraft II on medium @ 1440x900 without worry.
So this brings me to now: is a new iMac going to run my games well? I'm mostly an MMO gamer, with a few RTS's mixed in for funzies. I'll be first in line for the Old Republic, and will be playing the **** out of FFXIV. I've heard polar opposites of "omg, it'll run ffxiv no problem" and "**** no, that iMac won't run sh*t." I will be playing with Windows 7 for most all of my games, which usually seems to run better than games installed on OSX, anyways.
So what are y'alls experiences with the new iMac and games? The guy at Bestbuy said everything will run beautifully, but he doesn't work for apple and could just be trying the make the sale. And unfortunately, the guy at the apple store didn't seem to know much about the iMac he tried to sell me (lol). I guess my biggest worry is the GPU, as I'm not familiar with ATI cards.
So now its your turn! What do you think? And would you go with the i5 or i7?
Thanks a ton,
-mutedPlatypus

Hi,
I have recently purchased a 27" i5 iMac with a ATI 5750. The only game I have played on this so far is StarCraft 2, but I have been running this in Max resolution with all graphics settings on Ultra, and it runs absolutely beautifully.
If you google you will find many many websites complaining of StarCraft 2 frying their graphics card, but i've found this iMac doesn't break a sweat. No fans kicking in, and iMac has stayed cool after a few hours of gaming.
I would definitely recommend this new series of iMacs for gaming now they have finally put some decent current gen gfx cards in.

  • Gaming in the new iMac

Hi Everyone! Since there are no Gaming 'Discussions' on this site I thought I may as well add one here!
I do however have a question about gaming with my iMac. Does anyone know what the system requirments are/will be for Diablo 3? and also if anyone know of the game, Halo, Halo 2 and Halo 3/Odst, Is this ever going to be available for Mac users or just Xbox and PC?
    Thanks!
    Hope someone can answer me!

Oddly enough Halo was actually written for the mac before the developer was bought by Microsoft, it was demoed in one of Steve Jobs' Keynotes.
Halo is available for the Mac not so sure about the 2nd one though.

  • Installing windows 7 on the NEW iMac 21.5inch mac

    Hey Guys
im thinking on buying the new iMac 21.5 mac (link Below) but im wondering how would you install windows 7 on there through bootcamp.
The Mac doesnt have a disk drive and Apple USB Super Drive connects via USB which the Mac will not read well trying to install windows.

So what steps do i take?

Well, if Windows isn't going to be used for gaming, just running Windows Apps, I'd highly recommend...

Please give me you thoughts on what I should do!!  Thanks  lot!

The new iMac is about 25% or so faster than your current iMac(comparable model would be the 3.1ghz version). There are a couple of things that you will benefit from such as the dual Thunderbolt/Mini Display ports/ which may help with multitasking. The video card in the new iMac again the comparable model being the 3.1ghz is a lotttttttt better than the current one that you have. So thinking of the long run those few things may be beneficial for you to upgrade(but it depends on what is important to you).
I had the 2.93ghz i7 version that I just bought in March this year and I turned around and sold it about a week before the new iMac's were announced. I got about $1600 for it, yeah I took a loss but to me it was worth it because my new iMac performs that much better. Now keep in mind I went from i7 to i7...3.4ghz i7 with the 2gb video card. Now I have dual thuderbolt/mini display ports. I have noticed significant gains in my video editing and also in my gaming. So to me it was definitely worth the upgrade!
One last thing, I would not have sold my 2.93 i7 and then bought the 3.1ghz i5, the big reason is because HT(hyper threading), it's only on the i7 model(3.4ghz)... If you take a look at some of the bench marks on engadget, maclife, macrumors, macworld, ****Barefeats.com(they really get into benchmarking)*** you will see charts that will help you make a better decision.
In closing I would say look into it, if you can get a good price out of your current iMac to put toward a new iMac then do it. Like others have mentioned to you, tech changes and Apple will change the tech in these machines next year or do a speed bump later this year or so. One last thing if you go from the 2.8 i5 up to the 3.4 i7, you would definitely see the difference (HT is a must especially for programs that utilize it. You can go to my youtube channel(mob1278) and take a look at my geekbench results.... my 2.93 i7 scored around 10500-11000(8gb ram)...my 3.4 i7 scores from 12700-13000 with 4gb ram....so yeah as you can see big difference. Basically the 3.4 i7 would perform similar or just under a 2.4ghz 8core 2010 Mac Pro which runs you about $3500 with no monitor.... it's your money spend it how you want....and Lion is only going to push it even more when it is released!

  • Connecting a serial wacom tablet to the new iMac

    Hello,
At home I have an old PC (please don't laugh, I use a Mac at work) and I hope to change this to the new iMac very soon. I have a A4 wacom tablet connected to the PC via the serial port. Is it possible to get an adapter (serial to USB) that will work on the iMac so that I can use the tablet and not have to shell out another X anount of money for a new one??
    Thanks in advance.

  • Can I use firewire to transfer everything from my Macbook Pro (Intel Core 2 Duo 2.25 GHz) to the new iMac (2.5GHz Quad-Core Intel Core i5)?

I have a MacBook Pro to use at work. It has everything (all genuine softwares, server connection etc). The company is using a contract IT company so connecting to the server and setting email is real issue with me as this IT people can't configure Mac. Last time it took them 1 week to set up everything for me ( me one the phone with them as they aren't coming to our office - they only use QuickViewer to get access to my laptop).
Now the company is buying me an iMac so that I can use the laptop at home. Can I use firewire to transfer everything to the new iMac so that I don't waste my time installing softwares & calling this IT people to set up my email and connection to the server again? If it works do I have to enter serial numbers in again for all the softwares or I have to buy new softwares (I know with Adobe CS - I can only install in one computer)?
    Thanks in advance.

If you want to use the adobe suite on the imac you will have to deactivate it on the MBP or it will show up as being used. That is if you can only install it on one computer. Some licenses you can install it on 2 computers but it has to say that on the cd key tag.
Sorry to hear about your bad experience with the contractors. It is not that hard to get stuff like that up and running on the mac.

  • How many users are still experiencing frequent freezes on the new iMac

I've been reading about the new iMac and have seen that many people have a problem with it freezing way too often.
I'm wondering if this has been resolved or is this issue still going on?
I'm quiet keen on getting an iMac, 24" but really am starting to get a bit worried about the freezing. That is a big reason why I would be leaving Windows and so I wouldn't want to spend the money to have the same problems again.

    Hey there,
I personally have bought a new 24'' model a week ago and I do have the freezing problem, too (as stated here: http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=1533430&tstart=15). But as far as I have been investigating the problem is related only to nVidea Graphics Cards. So if you're planing to get a Radeon Version Model (HD 2600) I think you're not going to run into much problems (but I might still be wrong). Taking the 8800 GS Option you might have the same problems that I have. Since there is an awful lot of users I think (or better pray) that this a driver problem that can be solved by a simple software update (indeed I already read of some users with 10.5.3 (beta) who said that the problem would be fixed).
The be on the totally save side, I would wait until 10.5.3 (or a seperate graphic update) and then ask your question again.

  • How Can i connect using Thunderbolt a Macbook Pro with the New iMac

I bought the new Macbook Pro with Thunderbolt and instead of buying a new external monitor, i am thinking that the new iMac with Thunderbolt is a great idea.
Is there a cable to connect the Macbook Pro and use as iMac as external monitor, using Thunderbolt.
    thanks

I understood your question perfectly and the answer is absolutely yes. When you change the iMac into target display mode you underlying operating system continues to run all existing applications. For example in my case if I finished editing some video and am about to enter a lengthy render process or something which may draw lots of resources like hand real, I set it to start on the iMac and then switch it to target display mode to use it as a monitor with my MacBook air in the meantime.
Only one small caveat in your case though.  Since the target display mode is a feature of OSX (eg the OS interprets the special key stroke and changes the iMac into target display mode) you should make sure Lion server supports the target display mode feature. I don't see a reason why it wouldn't but that's the only thing currently crossing my mind. Keep in mind the compatibilities between ports as noted in my blog. If any of your machines have mini display port and you intend to connect the new iMac in target display mode you will run into issues. In that special scenario, I recommend buying a refurb iMac from 2010 which urtilize the displayport allowing you to use it as a display for all your macs -- those with thunderbolt as well as those with displayport. If you have thunderbolts then definitely go with the thunderbolt iMac.

  • I have two Macs: an MBA and the new iMac.  Is there a way to have iTunes and all the content in it identical on both machines?

I have two Macs: an MBA and the new iMac.  Is there a way to have iTunes and all the content in it identical on both machines?

Yes you can copy the content to your new machine and use Home Sharing to keep the content identical
Connect the two machines via an ethernet cable it is 3 times faster than Wifi. Turn wifi off on one machine to enforce ethernet connection
In System Preferences, Sharing turn on File Sharing
    Then
Copy the music/itunes folder from the Macbook pro to the music/ folder on the imac
Both machines should now have the same library
    Disconnect H the ethernet cable
Set up Home Sharing and under Settings at the bottom of the Home Sharing page. Select to transfer new purchases.
Do the same on the other machine.
Then when you r machines are connected by wifi and each time you start itunes it will transfer your new purchases

  • Is there a way to instal Final cut studio 2 in the new iMac with Lion?

My new iMac arrived with pre installed Os x Lion. When tried to instal FCS2 it gives me error that it can't open it because PowerPC apps are no longer supported. Geniuses . I'm wandering, since I can't downgrade to snow leopard, is there a way around this. Can I buy the snow leopard, instal only the Roseta , instal FCS2 and then uninstall the Roseta?
Has any of you encounter this problem?
Are the new iMacs exclusively done to run with Lion?

You will need to install Snow Leopard in order to be able to run the FCS 2 Installer since it requires Rosetta. Note however, that the applications do not require Rosetta (they are UB). So after having installed FCS you could now upgrade to Lion if you want .... but upgrading the OS over an installed version of FCS is not recommended practice.
Personally, I'd just get a copy of Snow Leopard and stick with that .... or get FCS 3 (and stick with Snow Leopard).

  • Is their a way to use the T-Mobile Blackberry with the new iMac w/Intel?

    Hello Everyone,
I have the T-Mobile Blackberry and am trying to get it to sync to the new iMac with Intel, 10.4.6 OS. It never shows up on my computer when I plug it in. I have tried it in Bluetooth mode as well as serial and USB and nothing.
I have also downloaded pocketmac. Pocketmac with GoBetween to sync with Entourage and nothing works.
I guess my main questions are, is there something I am missing, a program or feature that needs to be installed to get the T-mobile Blackberry to work? Or, should I switch to the Treo?
Any help would be truly appreciated as I have been working on this for weeks, searching websites, contacting Pocketmac support and absolutely no one has a solution.
    Thanks!
iMac with Intel   Mac OS X (10.4.6)

It all depends upon your Treo. Generally speaking, all Palm devices are supported 'out of the box' but there are difficulties to overcome with early Palm organizers, Handspring devices and serial [not USB] or infrared Palm handelds.
The Treo 600 [USB only] and Treo 650 [Bluetooth or USB] are supported by iSync, and—like all Palm OS 4 or 5 devices—to a much more effective extent by the Missing Sync for Palm OS from Mark/Space. See this link for more information:
    http://www.markspace.com/missingsync_palmos.php
A Treo 700w is a Windows Mobile 5 device, and neither Information Appliance Associates, not Mark/Space, have delivered release packages supporting Windows Mobile 5 smartphones and Pocket PC devices. Mark/Space, however, is shipping an early alpha release of the Missing Sync for Windows Mobile with support for the Treo 700w, but only to registered users of the existing release for earlier devices. More information, generally, about that product is available here:
    http://www.markspace.com/missingsync_windowsmobile.php
And, you can read about the early 2.5a8 [alpha] version here:
    http://www.markspace.com/wm5.html
Incidentally, as a T-Mobile subscriber, you can use virtually any unlocked GSM handheld or smartphone on their network, giving you lots more choices than other wireless subscribers have. You can synchronize a SONY Ericsson P910a [Symbian OS] or similar smartphone with iSync, a Sidekick or Sidekick II [Danger OS] hiptop device using the Missing Sync for hiptop, or the Palm or Windows Mobile handsets they or others offer using iSync or the Missing Sync for Palm OS in the case of the Palm OS units, or the Missing Sync for Windows Mobile or PocketMac in the case of Windows Mobile and Pocket PC devices.

  • DVD Studio Pro no longer works with the new iMac. Solutions?

Disc installations in general don't exist anymore and DVD Studio Pro is no longer supported in the new iMac that we have at our office. I used to have Roxio's Toast Titanium as a backup burner, but even that is not supported past mac OS 10.7. Final Cut X has the option to export straight to DVD but the menu options it gives you is so basic it doesn't even look professional. I was just wondering if anyone else has had this problem and what they are using now to burn a professional looking DVD. Many thanks

    mlaughbaum,
It seems as though you and I are on the same page struggling. Were you able to find any alternatives to DVDSP or any way to continue using it?
    On-Site Video
I'm considering myself lucky... Though I was unable to install either DVDSP and FCP v.6 on my new iMac, they are both still working on my older iMac even though it too is running ML. I believe this is because I upgraded to ML from Leopard with both already installed.
My only suggestion would be to install Leopard (or the OS on which they were working for you), install FCP, DVDSP and compressor, and then upgrade to ML. Seems like a silly solution but I have a feeling it would work. I'm not doing it because it's working on the iMac that's closest to my DVD duplicator. That said, if I had to, I believe that's what I'd try.
Really infuriates me. My business depends on DVD sales and there really isn't another cost effective DVD authoring solution for the mac out there.
I do wish you the best of luck and would love to hear if you come up with a better solution.

  • Sales Tax for the new iMac

I'm sorry, I know this is probably not the right place to pose a question about sales tax, but I could not find the right category =/
If you think I should re-write this question in another category, I will
So, my situation is: I live in Brazil, and I have a friend who's going to the US in October. She is going to buy the new iMac for me.
I read on Apple's website that Sales Tax may apply. In which cases? If my friend goes to the retail store (instead of ordering it's shipment), does she has to pay this tax? how much is it normally? Does it depend on the State?
(And I only ask this because it's really not clear at apple.com and I don't know how sales tax work in the US...)
so thank you for your help!

Your question is really inappropriate to the Apple Discussions. The AD is a user-to-user forum for helping with technical problems and questions for Apple products. Sales taxes is certainly not one of those topics.
However, to answer your question. If your friend purchases a Mac in the Apple store or if you purchase it via the online store taxes will be charged. Sales taxes in the US are typically between 6-8 percent of the purchase cost depending upon the state in which it is purchased. There are a few states that do not levy sales taxes such as Nevada and Montana.
In addition when your friend takes the computer into your country you will likely be charged with import duties and taxes as well. If it's your expectation that this ploy will save you some money I wouldn't count on it.

  • Can you attach an external HD to the new iMac with a fusion drive?

I'm trying to decide how to configure the new iMac I am going to buy. Can you attach an external HD to an iMac with a fusion drive?  I'm assuming it would be fine, but since the fusion drive is new, I don't want a nasty surprise.   Some of the new Mac Minis now have fusion drives, so has anyone added an external drive to it?

This was a concern expressed in this thread: Worrying reply to Apples FAQ on new Fusion Drive
However, Apple has since amended the FAQ, clarifying their earlier Fusion confusion.
Therefore I believe the answer is yes, you can add an external USB HD. If Apple would only state that explicitly in this document, it would eliminate all doubt.

Sure-glad to help you. You will not lose any data by changing synching to MacBook Pro from imac. You have set up Time Machine, right? that's how you'd do your backup, so I was told, and how I do my backup on my mac.  You should be able to set a password for it. Save it.  Your stuff should be saved there. So if you want to make your MacBook Pro your primary computer,  I suppose,  back up your stuff with Time machine, turn off Time machine on the iMac, turn it on on the new MacBook Pro, select the hard drive in your Time Capsule, enter your password, and do a backup from there. It might work, and it might take a while, but it should go. As for clogging the hard drive, I can't say. Depends how much stuff you have, and the hard drive's capacity.  As for moving syncing from your iMac to your macbook pro, should be the same. Your phone uses iTunes to sync and so that data should be in the cloud. You can move your iTunes Library to your new Macbook pro
you should be able to sync your phone on your new MacBook Pro. Don't know if you can move the older backups yet-maybe try someone else, anyways,
This handy article from Apple explains how
How to move your iTunes library to a new computer - Apple Support''
don't forget to de-authorize your iMac if you don't want to play purchased stuff there
and re-authorize your new macBook Pro
time machine is an application, and should be found in the Applications folder. it is built in to OS X, so there is nothing else to buy. double click on it, get it going, choose the Hard drive in your Time capsule/Airport as your backup Time Machine  and go for it.  You should see a circle with an arrow on the top right hand of your screen (the Desktop), next to the bluetooth icon, and just after the wifi and eject key (looks sorta like a clock face). This will do automatic backups  of your stuff.
