Gaming with Windows XP

I've just installed Boot Camp and was wondering which PC games I can play with Windows XP installed.
If I were to go into an electronics store, what would be the minimum requirements that I should look for to get great performance when playing these games under Boot Camp? And are there any special Boot Camp settings that would help me out?
I've also partitioned 5GB to Boot Camp. Is that enough for gaming?
And finally, what games have you personally been able to run? I'd like to be able to run Gears of War and Mass Effect if possible.

Hello Paul
Yes you game game and have a great time - I mostly use Steampowered and run games like Half-Life and Day of Defeat.
5 Gig will not be enough - I started with this and had the rebuild to 20.
Good Luck,

  • MSI Z87-G45 GAMING.. does the killer networking work with Windows 8.1?

I was scrolling through the reviews for this board and someone mentioned in the reviews that the killer networking isnt supported with windows 8.1 yet.
Is this still true or are there updated drivers for windows 8.1 now?
    Thanks.

There is a driver posted on MSI's website for 8.1.

  • I am dual booting my mackbook pro with windows 7 64 bit. Yesterday it started locking up at the disk drive selections screen, when you hold down the "option" butting when powering on. I have been searching all morning, and so far nothing. Thanks. :)

    Hey folks,
I have been using bootcamp for months now with windows 7 64 bit, and its been fine, yesterday while I was rebooting to do some gaming, at the hard drive selection screen when you boot holding the "options" butting down, it locks up when I select the windows drive and just sits there for ever. It doesn't throw an error, it boots fine into Lion.
I searched all morning and didn't find anything, was hoping that someone might have an idea.
    Thanks in advance

Search again. Microsoft has tips on what to do and Windows has a number of features
    system restore points
automatic system repair using the Win7 DVD
    system restore image creation
Just like you would with OS X Lion and Lion Recovery and Repair
Use WinClone 3 www.twocanoes.com $20 to make an image just like you would with Disk Utility Restore or Carbon Copy Cloner
rollback to last known good boot check point
rollback a driver or program or any changes
    clean out temp files
    clean registry
    chkdsk

  • Optimize Mac for Gaming with Bootcamp?

Hi, I have a Mid 2012 MacBook Pro with Windows 7 installed using Bootcamp. Because I'm a student my parents aren't exactly thrilled with the idea of getting me a Gaming PC, but since I'm not a hardcore gamer I think I can make do with what I have. How would I be able to optimize my gaming experience with my Mac? In other words, whether it is with software, or upgrading some hardware, how can I make my Mac usable for gaming. And trust me, I'm not hoping for 60FPS having games on the highest setting kind of thing, something that is decent quality is all I want. I feel that my Mac's current specs and hardware is almost at where I want it, but some optimization to increase efficiency and performance would be really nice. Thanks in advance!

you are stuck with whatever graphics it has which is usually the main resource.
Did you buy with just base RAM? which processor? you can't change the cpu.

Windows can't be installed on an external drive but it can be cloned and booted off Thunderbolt interface.
    Boot Camp
A PC with i7-4790 and 16GB + SSD (case, psu, copy of Windows) and X89 motherboard would of course give you freedom and not have to dual boot, plus you get to choose the GPU you need. Windows on Mac often run hot, hotter than they do already. And later you can upgrade just the parts you need to.

  • Keyboard Problems with Windows 7

I just purchased a Dell Inspiron with Windows 7.  The problem is, the keyboard seems to have a mind of its own.  When I am typing online, all of the sudden I find that I have opened a new tab or the search box has opened or I am adding something to favorites.  When I am off line working in a word document, sometimes when I press p the print dialog box opens.  Sometimes when I press b the text is bolded, u the text begins to be underlined, i the text begins to be put in italics.  Ohter times the entire document gets highlighted and with the next keystroke I unintentionally delete my entire document.  The text justification and margins change randomly as well.  It is extremely frustrating to work with a keyboard that has a mind of its own.

    OK, here we go....
I have heard of some issues that may be a root cause of this.
I'm running Win 7 Home Premium on a Dual 64 AMD processor.
    1. Win 7 has had several hardware design based issues with the USB ports.  That would explain what I get the most, my USB keyboard 'stops' then starts working again.  Very embarrassing when playing online games, and one is in
a knife-fight.  For a while, my keyboard would hang, and unplugging it long enough to hear the disconnect tone, then plugging it back in worked until the next time it happened.  Since running recent Windows updates, this seems to have gone
away, but now, my keyboard simply pauses.  Other USB devices are doing the same.  I just now tried to update my iPhone, only to have it interrrupted by Windows telling me the device was no longer connected.  I was not near the wire connecting
the device, so once again, my USB went bye-bye.  Happened twice in a row.  This is getting serious on my PC.
I have experienced the issue above, with a non-USB keyboard. The random keystroke, or keystrokes added thing....Being that I will temporarily test an AT keyboard while troubleshooting my USB ports, I will let ya'll know if I see anything again.
I have read some forum discussions on Windows and USB issues.  Some say to check jumper settings on either the motherboad, or the IC card that the front-panel USB ports are mounted on.  Apparently the wiring of front-panel USB ports is being argued
by various manufacturers, and the debate rages on how to wire USB connections to motherboards...that's what I believe is going on with that.
I have a feeling that the default USB keyboard drivers for Win 7 are trying to get too fancy, and have default settings that were not well tested.  They are making something simple like a keyboard too easy to screw up.  The OS SHOULD be plug and
play.  Plug and play is becoming a bad joke these days...
Although some more power was given to the sophisticated user in Win 7, too much control over the OS is disappearing.  I am an Engineer, who enjoys online gaming for recreation.  Win 7 is good for running newer games fast, BUT I can't tell
it to stop using network resources..I mention this, because troubleshooting a keyboard SHOULD be easy, but my OS makes me guess too much, and I have no idea what parts of the OS are involved in the OS communicating with my keyboard.
As for gaming, I'm best running an XP partition to run my network games.  But I'll be restricted to older ones.
I have seen some improvement in access to the documentation I need to trouble-shoot these issues, but usually find the answers in forums such as this.
I should not have to read the Tech-nets for 3 hours to make my keyboard work.

I have HP Compaq p6874 with Windows 7.  It has an ATI RAdeon HD 4200 video card.  Will the XFX R5 230 Radeon graphics card work in my CPU and fix my gaming issues?  Also, what PSU will I need to run that graphics card?  Games that I have jerk and the sound stutters.  These games are recommended for Windows 7.  I would greatly appreciate any help you can give me.

Gamester417, thanks for the additional information.
I do beleive that the card should fit into the case.  However, I can't guarantee that it will solve all of your gaming problems.
The card requires a PSU with 450W to operate properly.  The PSU in the computer is only 250W.  So, the recommendations that I provided in my original would be good.

I have a Gateway computer with Windows 8 installed.  I have installed Dreamweaver CS5 to manage my website and it won't stay connected to the server.  It also won't play flash and says I need a flash plug in.  Please help

#1  Try toggling Passive FTP on/off in your remote server's site definition.
#2 Except for a handful of gaming sites, Flash is a dead web technology.  It's not supported by iPhone, iPad, iTouch, Android, etc...  I don't recommend using Flash for anything these days.  Better to use HTML5, CSS level 3 and JavaScript.

  • Bootcamp with Windows 7 won't start with upgraded RAM

    Hello!
I upgraded my RAM from 4Gb to 8Gb.
OS X works fine but bootcamp with Windows 7 Ultimate x64 wont start. The screen goes black and white cursor is blinking at the top left corner. I have waited several minutes but nothing happens.
When I remove the ram I just installed, Windows 7 will start normally.

Are there any other options here? This is quite frustrating. I have Windows 7 Ultimate 64 bit on my Bootcamp, and upgraded my RAM from 4GB to 8GB (bought Crucial RAM, which should be completely compatible). When I try to boot Windows, I get the blinking cursor hung. This is the ONLY thread I have been able to find that relates directly to this issue. I started to re-install Windows from the bootable install disc, but that tells me it will re-install Windows, and save all the old data in a volume called "Windows.old" and that I can access this data but "will not be able to use my old version of Windows." Maybe that's OK. Since I use my Windows partition exclusively for gaming and 3D sculpture work, I am pretty sure I can just pull all the appropriate data and re-install it in the new version of Windows. But I am leery of going through all this after reading the tale of woe told here that says that even re-installing with 8 GB RAM fresh does not work. Does anyone know of any other resources or options here? I can't even get to "Safe" mode - just a black screen and the blinking cursor.....arrrrgh! Any help greatly appreciated!

When the ISP connection goes down and return, sometimes, the network card is bugged.
Sometimes, using the Windows troubleshoting solves the problem.
    Symptoms of BUG
The router not respond the network card Killer e2200, and does not respond to any package.
If any audio is played during the bug, it is accompanied by the noise "pop-pop-pop-pop" that keeps repeating, at a rate of 2 Hz.
    Example(Wireshark images)
bugged - call Router and unresponsive
Normal - Call Router and Router respond
The only computer in my network, having problems with Router is Z97-GD65 GAMING.
The other 5 computers tested, and even smartphones NEVER had any problem with the router.
    workaround
    Reboot PC.
Before display the logo of Win7, the router recognizes the network Killer e2200.
    Solution attempts
    1) Update Bios
    2) Uninstall and reinstall Killer e2200 drivers
    3) Already changed the place of computers in the router output, and only MSI motherboard show this problem.
    Conclusion
The Z97-GD65 GAMING, for every connection fall of ISP,  the user needs to restart for the internet back up and running.
I was forced to restart 3 or 4 times per day, while the entire network operates normally.
The problem is occurring from the first day that I am using the Motherboard, and  delay this time to do all the tests to determine exactly what was happening.

    1) BIOS are flashed using MSI Live update 6.0.0.0
After the update, MSI Live Update presented some problems with Windows 7 64Bits, and I uninstalled it.

Let's do it this way: clear CMOS : https://forum-en.msi.com/index.php?topic=31222.0
Then go into BIOS, set your DVD drive (or USB?) to be #1 i boot order, then your SSD/HDD as #2 (non UEFI as there appears like UEFI Drive) and try to install

  • Syncing iphone with windows 7 contacts - error message outlook.pst not foun

I have set set up ITunes to sync my Iphone GS with Windows Contacts. When I sync I get an error message :
The file c:\Program Files\Common Files\System\Mapi\1033\Outlook.pst could not be found
Sometimes the error message comes up 2 or 3 times.
Secondly, my Iphone is syncing with something because an old version of my windows address book is now on my iphone. Of course if I add a new contact to Windows Contacts, it does not appear on my iphone.
I dont have Outlook installed on my PC. It was removed, but I guess I do have an old outlook.pst file from my old times with Windows XP.
So how does Itunes manage the sync and how can I stop it syncing with my old address book and use Windows Contacts? I have tried resetting my sync history but it did not work.
I am running Windows7 (upgrade from Vista).

I am also having issues with syncing my Iphone 3GS with the latest version on Itunes. I have for a long while now been doing just great. My contacts, phone numbers, emails have all synced very nicely, no problems. As soon as I downloaded the new Itunes 9.1 I can no longer sync contacts, and calendars, as usual.
I tried several things that were suggested to me in the troubleshooting but nothing has helped. It usually tells me that my computer is not set up for syncing, and after arranging that it still doesn't work. As well, it says it cannot find the requested services.
    Please help.
I am running windows 7, and have been for a while, it's not windows 7, it's the new Itunes upgrade.

  • IPod Classic - ok with Windows, not with iTunes

    Hi,
    I have a Classic 160GO iPod.
    Suddenly this problem appeared :
    - no music or pictures were recognized by my iPod, but the disk space was used for "Other"
    - this iPod is not known with iTunes
    - This iPod is known as a removable hard disk, via Windows 7 (Main computer), Windows XP (secondary computer), a linux thing (a friend computer).
    1. I already checked this iPod with the diagnostics mode (see https://discussions.apple.com/message/19048752#19048752)
    result is :
    - reallocs : 0
    - Pending sectors : 32
My understanding is that my iPod hard disk is ok and valid.
    2. I followed most of the recommended way to repaird the iPod as per Support (8 out of 10)
    NOthing is working.
I confirm I have installed the latest version of iTunes.
    3. I read the following page : https://discussions.apple.com/message/19158071#19158071 to find the relevant firmware.
But the iPod Classic 160GO is not in the list.
    My questions
--> Do you have an idea to solve my problem ?
--> What could happend i I format my iPod with windows ? It would be only a hard disk after, wouldn't it ?
    --> I f I format, is there a solution to re-install the iPod software (= firmware ?)
    Thank you for your help.

The iPod hardisk is  looks new from the Reallocs and ON Hours, but, it is rebooting more to get the correct spin for data verification, causing tImeouts,  so the Pending Sector will increase.
There maybe something, near the iPod environment, that is causing the drive to fail, and overheat, if it has not already been damaged, or maybe it is just one Hardisk, that slipped through poor quality control.
You can bring the Retract, Realloc and pending number low, by doing low level format, see this article, but your problem of Hardisk rebooting to find a good cluster, wont go away
    Just my thoughts.
Magnets are the primary cause of hardisk crashes,  I would also suspect, using your handphone, while it is near the iPod would also be bad, see the YouTube video on hardboiled eggs using handphone.

You can use the AVS Video Editing software to import MPEG-4 Movie files in the same way you'd import .avi files into Windows Movie Maker. Also, the AVS Video Editor will allow you to import iTunes .mp4 audio files and incorporate them into your soundtrack. If you still want to use Windows Movie Maker for your video editing you can also use video conversion software from the same company, i.e. AVS Video Converter 6, to convert from MPEG-4 into .avi or .wmv format. I've found converting to .wmv to be considerably slower than converting to .avi though. Here's a link to the AVS video software offerings below. BTW, the AVS Video Editor can be used for free, while there's a charge for the Converter.
